MELISSA CAMILLERI started her career as a High School English Teacher. She loved teaching and being able to connect with her students. And then an idea that started as a fundraiser turned into a small business called Shop Compliment. That was 2011 and Melissa worked hard to ensure it was a success through fostering relationships and providing an amazing product (jewelry) and message (empowering young women). Through her journey, Melissa got married to husband Nick in 2015. That was followed by two boys that started the family (No. 3 is due in 2023 and it's a GIRL!). Then the pandemic hit. Melissa used the coaching leg of her business to develop what she has today called Stand for the And Education Company. Even more amazing is that she is co-owner with business partner Angela Greaser. Greaser lives in Maine and the two have never met in person. Today we get to hear Melissa's amazing journey and this amazing business she has created that truly has her stronger and better than ever!HOST STEVE BUZZARD on Melissa Camilleri | "Melissa represents what the podcast is all about. She had an idea. Made it into a business. Got married, Had kids. And then took her initial idea and shifted into something different. She has entrepreneur written all over her. And the best part ... I love her positive attitude toward life. It shines in this episode. Our conversation hits THREE areas: SEGMENT 1 ✨ | begins with the early days of Shop Compliment and its origin. Melissa discusses all the important pieces that went into taking an idea for a fundraiser and making it into her first business adventure.SEGMENT 2 ✨ | gets heavy into entrepreneur material. We talking about Action over Words, Going with your Gut, and the power of a Mastermind with other entrepreneurs. That leads into uncovering her new adventure ... Stand for the And Education Company. We break it down so much that I get excited about becoming a client!SEGMENT 3 ✨ | finishes strong with words of wisdom from Melissa. She does a beautiful job of providing some landmark thoughts for entrepreneurs young and old. Our Connection | I was the DJ for Melissa and her husband Nick's wedding back in 2015 at the Firehouse Restaurant in Downtown Sacramento. Let's just say it was an EPIC night of celebration. That led to being the DJ at Melissa's brother's wedding in 2017. Along the way, I have tracked Melissa and her success as an entrepreneur. That's why she had to be on the show! The video version of this episode is ALSO AVAILABLE on YOUTUBE. After 78 straight episodes, it’s time to put the show on the shelf. This podcast has been what I describe as my “Lady Bird” AKA my love letter to Sacramento. The region has taken the needed steps of growth over this past decade and it has been a real pleasure meeting just some of the many people that make our city unique. The decision to put the podcast on hold isn’t out of nowhere. Many of you know my day job has been at FOX40 for the last 5+ years. It has been a great run, but there are some exciting career opportunities down south that I cannot pass up- I’m going to be an Associate Producer on this season of “American Ninja Warrior” and a Freelance Photographer for ABC7 in Los Angeles in between. The decision wasn’t easy as I love my hometown Sacramento, but it will be a great period of growth for me. In this last episode of Capital Success for now, I bring on a few of my favorite people, some repeats on the show. Patrick Harbison of PHPR makes his 3rd appearance, FOX40 Morning News Anchor Pedro Rivera makes his 2nd appearance, and FOX40 Morning News Weatherman Adam Epstein makes his debut appearance. We discuss my big move, Downtown Sacramento doubling in size in 2022 (10:00), why I’ll still love my Sacramento sports teams (12:00), Why winning the Lip Sync battle on Capitol Mall with Adam and Pedro was one of the best moments of my life (20:00), advice for the big move (31:00), roller coasters

A Stanford MBA, a partnership at management consulting mega-firm McKinsey, and advising roles at California startups and nonprofits gave him such an impressive resume that Governor Newsom tapped Mendonca to be his Chief Economic and Business Advisor, the director of the state’s Office of Business and Economic Development (also known as GO-Biz), and, last but not least, the chair of California’s High Speed Rail Commission. Those are a lot of responsibilities, but Mendonca is taking them on — his mission now is to make Inland California the most desirable place to live in the state. He wants to raise the region’s stature in the eyes of companies on the coast, and solve some of its biggest problems around housing, jobs, transit and wealth inequality. Join us for this conversation down in the basement of Ruhstaller’s taproom in Downtown Sacramento as we talk with Mendonca about his Central Valley roots and vision, and how he plans to bring the jobs, the housing and the high-speed transit to California’s “flyover country." This discussion was recorded on November 30, 2017. We partnered up with the Crocker Art Museum for its "Conversations that Matter" series to have a conversation about the future of the neighborhood that surrounds it -- Downtown Sacramento. It has been a little more than a year since the Golden 1 Center opened. The arena brought in a host of hot-ticket concerts and kicked off a slew of new development around it. Next up: development of the Railyards, revitalizing the riverfront, and making Old Sacramento more of a draw for the locals. But what are the plans for housing? For handling the homeless issue? For turning the still-too-many stretches of derelict buildings into something more pleasant? For parking and public transit? And making sure Downtown doesn't turn into an overpriced playground only a few can afford to enjoy? We're talking in the Crocker Museum's Friedman Court with a group of people in charge of handling these issues about what has changed in Downtown Sacramento, what has improved and what still needs work. PANELISTS * John Dangberg, assistant city manager for the City of Sacramento - he was the city's top person in charge of the Golden 1 Center's construction project, and now is focusing on more redevelopment of Downtown and development of the Railyards. * Brooksie Hughes, Old Sacramento District Director for the Downtown Sacramento Partnership - she's tasked with making Old Sacramento a more hip, happening place where locals equal, or even outnumber, out-of-town visitors. * Bay Miry - vice-president of development for D&S Development - first he helped turn R Street into one of the city's hottest nightlife destinations, now he's turning a section of K Street from eyesore to gateway to Golden 1 Center. * Richard Rich - Railyards and Riverfront project manager for the City of Sacramento - a former "imagineer" for the Walt Disney Company, he's turning his imagination toward how Sacramento can revitalize the riverfront. PODCAST TIMEFRAME * 1 min, 45 sec - Erin Dorn of the Crocker Museum introduces "Conversations that Matter" * 4:20 min: Intro to California Groundbreakers * 10:35 min: Panelists introduce themselves and share their favorite spots in Downtown Sacramento * 23:40 min: "We've gone from a valuation of $22.5 million to well over $1 billion in value" - How the City built a downtown arena without spending a lot of money and taking on a lot of debt * 33:30 min: "We can utilize all these really cool basements in these really cool historic buildings" - Turning the 70O K St block from a run-down stretch into the city's next hot spot * 45:50 min: "Of those 124 stores, less than 10 of them are T-shirt and candy stores" - Making Old Sacramento a draw for the locals as well as the tourists * 51:25 min: "20 years from now, that area could be turned into a great marina and mixed-use area" - Revitalizing the Sacramento waterfront * 58 min: "After subsidies, it's still $150,000 that needs to come from the government - per unit" - How much housing can we build in Downtown Sacramento? * 1 hr, 10:10 min: "The big upshot would be linking the two sides of the river, where the most exciting things are happening" - Smart ways for putting bikes, cars, public transit and pedestrians together harmoniously downtown * 1 hr, 20:15 min: "We're reaching the point where companies like Raley's are looking at smaller concepts that don't need as many parking spaces, delivery trucks or building space" - Putting a grocery story and everyday services in the grand vision of downtown * 1 hr, 27:35 min: "We really want to directly incentivize job growth" - Creating high-value jobs in Downtown * 1 hr, 34:20 min - "Anything we can do to create artist pop-ups within the empty retail spaces, we're looking at programs to do that" - Putting art, culture and farm-to-fork efforts around Downtown.
