Carolyn takes us on a journey through her remarkable life, from two decades in banking and marketing to embracing her passion for writing and empowering others to find their voice. She reveals the critical role of nature in fostering creativity, helping her—and countless others—find inspiration, purpose, and connection. We explore the transformative power of storytelling, not just as a way to express ourselves but as a tool to rebalance the world with empathy, impact, and justice. Carolyn Tate is a writer, educator and speaker and the author of six books including Brave Women Write and her best-selling book The Purpose Project. She is a pioneer of purpose in Australia and her book has inspired countless individuals to pursue their purpose and make an impact. Brave Women Write is her most recent book. It's a powerful call-to-action for women to harness the power of their words, to get writing and create personal and planetary change. As a river swimmer with a deep connection to nature, Carolyn's purpose is to write and share the stories that move us to remake the world. Carolyn and I were speaking about this topic of women who were bravely showing up to share their ideas of how to make things better, through writing and publishing books. Our discussion sparked this idea of using the podcast to inspire more women to write. There is no doubt we are experiencing a movement where many women are bravely showing up as protagonists of change in their industries. While this isn't limited to women, my experience and that of most of my co-conspirators, is that more women are driving purpose-led change than men. Perhaps it comes from the need to rebalance growth and winning with nurturing and sharing. So today's episode is dedicated to the many women who are showing up bravely, as well as those who want to do more to show up bravely. Brave Women Write is a celebration as well as an invitation. Hope you enjoy this episode. In this week's interview episode with Yamini Naidu, we talk about starting with fire, small talk vs big talk, being a new migrant, the power of good enough, how doubt can be a fierce friend, mentorship, the power of working in peer groups, what makes a good story, the hero & heroine's journey, realistic over blindly positive self-talk, rituals, and doing the work while letting go of expectations. Navigating preadolescence is scary enough but when questions arise around cultural identity or gender identity, things can get pretty overwhelming for our tweens. How do you parent a child who doesn't feel at home in their own body? Or a kid dealing with prejudices and peer pressure on the playground? And how do we arm tweens with the self-confidence to find or even change their identity. Dylan Lewis chats with Carolyn Tate, a mum of 3, whose eldest son started their transitioning journey when he was 12 years old after experiencing gender dysphoria. We also hear from Andy Saunders, a father of 2 and foster father of 2, whose relationship with his grandfather shaped the way he's shared his Aboriginal heritage with his own kids. In this first episode of Navigating Parenthood: Growing Great Tweens, brought to you by HCF, we talk about gender identity and diversity, as well as the importance of culture in shaping our young people. The January morning after Carolyn Tate ended her marriage, she went straight to the beach with her best friend of 15 years, Gillian Moody. Almost exactly one year later, Gillian was completely blindsided by her husband leaving, and it was Carolyn she called in shock and confusion for guidance. In FORTY, both women share what they learned about themselves, each other, and how they forged a new-look life – starting, oddly enough, with their respective toilets. (Don’t ask, just listen!) Two very different divorce experiences later, Carolyn and Gill decided to launch Australia’s first divorce club, a ‘breakup triage’ program to link women struggling through the first stages of separation with professionals and support. And do you know which month is unofficially recognised as ‘Divorce Month’? Yep, it’s January – which is why we launch in 2022 with an interview to lay out the cold, hard facts with the warm honesty of ladies who’ve been there and bought the postcard in their forties. Our guest for Episode 9 is Carolyn Tate, a Purpose and Storytelling Expert. She's author of multiple books, an inspirational speaker and a highly respected leader of the purpose movement in Australia. In 2010, Carolyn came to the crashing realisation that her career was at a dead-end. After 20 years in banking and 10 years in her own marketing consultancy, her work was no longer meaningful. So, she closed the business and took a writing sabbatical in Aix-en-Provence, France with her son Billy. It was the beginning of her search for a new livelihood and it led her to discovering her twin passions for writing and teaching. Ten years on, she's published five books, including 'The Purpose Project', and taught more than 10,000 people on the power of purpose and story. Her own purpose is to help you bring your purpose to life, so together we can build a better world. When she's not working, she's a dedicated community-builder and committed Birrarung (Yarra) river-swimmer. 'The Purpose Project' is a trusted guide to thousands of leaders and her focus is on working with school and corporate leadership teams. I really enjoyed exploring “the practice of purpose” in this interview. We didn't even have time to get into the topic of women in leadership, so we will be doing a second interview on that topic down the track. In the meantime, here are some of the themes we did explore: Carolyn's own path to purpose. Her journey from her epiphany in her corporate marketing career, to where she plays today Carolyn's work in the educational sector, working with principals on their purpose as a leader The three levels of purpose and the opportunities for organisations and individuals when they can align the three Carolyn talks about the opportunity to BYO your personal purpose to work. She shares a wonderful example and references a blog she wrote on it which you can read here https://carolyntate.co/when-two-worlds-collide/ Storytelling and its connection to purpose. Stories incite action and create movements for change. We talk about the TED Talk “How to start a movement” – a brilliant 3 minute talk you don't want to miss https://www.ted.com/talks/derek_sivers_how_to_start_a_movement/up-next How purpose connects to community. Carolyn shares her wonderful story about discovering river swimming in the age of Covid and finding her community. This episode features Kate, Kandice, and Michelle's efforts to understand how these paratexts may have informed not only the experience of attending the event in 1984, but also their own experiences listening to the recording of the reading now, in 2021, and their interactions with the surviving archival materials. This led them to interview Ann Cowan-Buitenhuis and Carolyn Tate, who attended and contributed to the organization of the two events. Their contributions provided both memories and facts not captured by the archival remains of the reading. With additional archival materials available in a supplementary slideshow, this episode takes us beyond the bounds of an ‘audio edition' to instead consider how the ‘paratexts' of this reading deepen our understanding of the recording and bring to life the reading of the story by acclaimed Canadian short-story writer Mavis Gallant. This episode was created by SpokenWeb contributors Kate Moffatt, Kandice Sharren, and Michelle Levy, with additional audio courtesy of the Simon Fraser University Archives and Records Management Department.SpokenWeb is a monthly podcast produced by the SpokenWeb team as part of distributing the audio collected from (and created using) Canadian Literary archival recordings found at universities across Canada. How deliberate are you about the way you make decisions at work? Bad decisions can result in wasted time, money and jobs. For example, when a company restructure goes badly, or when there is investment in a “sexy app” that ultimately no one uses. Dan Markovitz says that the number 1 reason that bad decisions are made are because people leap to a solution - what he labels the “conclusion trap”. Dan explains how we can all make better decisions by slowing down and paying more attention to the problem itself before we leap to the conclusion. He shares his four-step method to avoid the conclusion trap. And author Carolyn Tate has used daily journaling for the past ten years, she explains how this free association style of writing has supercharged her output as a writer.

All great change begins when you’re thinking is challenged – COVID 19 is a great unknown, it’s provided a non-optional pause for great slices of the world and for many of us this space has allowed contemplation – what might change as we move forward again? My own musing was significantly expanded when I was introduced to an essay by Charles Eisenstein, a graduate of Yale University with degrees in economics and philosophy (a most unusual combination, so it’s perhaps not surprising that his writing is both ground-breaking and thought-provoking in many ways). You can read The Coronation Essay here ( https://charleseisenstein.org/essays/the-coronation/) . Charles is also a social philosopher focusing on themes of human cultural evolution, economics and consciousness, and the author of many books including Climate a new story and Sacred Economics, The More Beautiful world our hearts know is possible. My good friend, author and Purpose Proponent, Carolyn Tate, was also an enthusiast reader and when we were comparing notes, we knew there was a deeper conversation to be had. And so here it is… we hope it inspires you to have a conversation about what changes are now waiting for you in Your Next Chapter too.
Carolyn Tate is a writer, educator and publisher from Melbourne, Australia. Carolyn has written five non-fiction books which have shaped her career, the most recent being 'The Purpose Project'. Carolyn has also launched two online learning programs based on that book, and she is also working on her sixth book, a novel. You can find Carolyn at https://carolyntate.co
Welcome to Episode 7 of the Decoding Purpose podcast. Over the last few weeks we have explored many facets of what it is to live a life of purpose. We have had conversations that define purpose, look at the science behind purpose, the role of storytelling, purpose in leadership, collaborative purpose, and of course in our last episode we looked at The Purpose Effect, a conversation with a core focus on the intersection between business and purpose. In today’s podcast I interview Carolyn Tate, a marketer by trade, turned author, with a passion for purpose-digging, writing, speaking, teaching and community. With 20 years in large organisations such as Westpac, Merrill Lynch and running her own business, her insight into our personal sense of purpose and the way this interacts with organisational purpose is unique and incredibly insightful. Her company, Carolyn Tate & Co. is an education and publishing company dedicated to unearthing a higher purpose in people and organisations. What I loved about interviewing Carolyn is while she is certainly an expert of purpose in business, her approach to purpose looks at the unfolding or rediscovery of purpose. She explores the idea that we are all born with purpose as an innate part of who we are, and that it is conditioning, belief systems and cultural paradigms that lead us to burying our purpose away into the unconscious parts of who we are. With that in mind, how do we go about remembering who we are...and rediscovering the unique purpose we were born with. In today's conversation Carolyn and I discuss: The cultural paradigms and beliefs that can cause us to bury or forget our purpose The role leaders can play in unearthing personal purpose in order to activate organisational purposeWhat a business can learn about purpose from the cycles of nature The differences between purpose and passion The role of purpose in influencing decision makingHow to differentiate between purpose and distractions And finally we end with a beautiful meditation to assist you in unearthing your golden buddha. Just a warning if you are driving your car, maybe save the last few minutes for a quieter time! Welcome to another episode of Decoding Purpose with the incredible Carolyn Tate. https://carolyntate.co/

Welcome to second muse on the Introvert Biz Growth podcast, the show where I talk to introverts who grow their business and make a difference. I’m Sarah Santacroce, your host. If you’re new here, then I want you to know that this is not the usual format of my regular episodes. I post a new show every other Friday, and it’s always a conversation with a fellow introverted entrepreneur who uses his or her introverted superpowers to make a difference. These shows are edited by Tim, my professional podcast editors who also creates amazing shownotes pages. But today’s episode is a muse, unedited, raw content. No editing. No intro music. No bells and whistles. I share these muses to make you think, to inspire you, to break the rules Today’s muse is composed of 2 parts: first I muse by myself about a quote I came across this week and then I’ll also share a quick conversation I had with Lisa Wells, a previous podcast guest, fellow introvert and friend of mine about the topic ‘Marketing with Integrity’. But first the quote. It’s a quote by Carolyn Tate, author of the book ‘Conscious Marketing’. It goes like this: The Business of Business is no longer business. The business of business is making the world a better place. I’ll read it again so you can really soak it in: The Business of Business is no longer business. The business of business is making the world a better place. Does that resonate with you? I’m sure it does, otherwise you wouldn’t be listening to this podcast where we’re all about making a difference. But this quote just really hit home for me and its people who have those same values who I want to surround myself with. People who are in business to make the world a better place. Which is why I’m on a mission to create the gentlebusinessrevolution Because we need more gentle people in business, more kindness, more love. And now as promised, here’s my conversation with Lisa Wells about the topic ‘Marketing with Integrity and what that means to her. Enjoy. Thanks for listening ! Thanks so much for listening to this muse. Apologies for the rather poor audio quality this time. Lisa was in a rented apartment in Germany, so not her usual set up. Have a great week Warmly Sarah
After a career I banking that she “fell into”, and the significant life change that divorce often heralds, Carolyn stepped away from the corporate world and started her own marketing business. She quickly became well regarded in the small business marketing world, publishing “Small Business Marketing for Dummies” and “Small Business, Big Brand”, running workshops and consulting to a wide range of businesses.
It's hostful time again, and this week Brooke and Ben answer three very different listener questions and launch the big, exciting project they've been working on for the past few months. It's a good day all round! First up, Rachael asks about coping with eco-anxiety - a great term which encapsulates the frustration that results when we try to make positive changes to our home and the waste we create, only to be constantly reminded by how imperfect our efforts are. It's an obstacle that many people come across and Brooke and Ben give their insights in to how to let go of the perfectionism and embrace smaller, more consistent changes. Brooke then puts on her ranty pants as she and Ben discuss the inanity of tit-for-tat holiday gift giving. You know the gifts for the extended family and friends, the office Christmas party, the neighbourhood get-together? Those ones really grind Brooke's gears and today she and Ben talk about how to best opt out of those gift giving arrangements if at all possible, and what crap-free options are available for the situations where a gift is still appropriate. It's a good time of year to start considering the impact of all these novelty gifts, as we edge closer to the holidays. Finally, Kerry asks Brooke and Ben what's most recently made them laugh uncontrollably. Brooke's answers are absurd and Ben's are a little closer to home! Months ago Brooke and Ben mentioned a new project they were working on in response to the recent listener survey results, and today they're finally ready to put it out in to the world! The Live Life Simply Online Retreat is the first of its kind and brings together the wisdom and expertise of 13 mindfulness, simplicity and slow living experts into one blissful six-week online retreat. The retreat is super practical and designed to help you learn at your own pace, in your own home. In The Company, Insights on Humanising Work with Kylie Lewis
Today we're in the company of Carolyn Tate, founder of Carolyn Tate and Co, The Slow School of Business, Talk on Purpose and The Purpose Project. We talk with Carolyn about her new book (her sixth!) The Purpose Project, the imperative to work with purpose. You can find out more about Carolyn, and download a free chapter from her book here: http://carolyntate.co/
In today's poggie, Carolyn Tate returns to talk about purpose. And while the current iteration of "purpose" seems to involve quitting your job, becoming a digital nomad and freelancing your way through life (all of which are valid choices!) Carolyn is here to talk about finding purpose in your current work. So often the conversation about purpose revolves around huge changes, or the fact that big corporations simply aren't interested in creating workplaces of purpose or intention, but as someone who has worked for 15 years in the corporate sector and the past 10 years in small business, Carolyn believes that there are opportunities for purposeful work and living, regardless of vocation. This is such an interesting conversation, and as always Carolyn has so many beautiful insights to share. Head over to http://www.slowyourhome.com/175 for the full blog post and links to Carolyn's new book. As someone who espouses simplicity and buying only what we need, Brooke has an uneasy relationship with the idea of capitalism. But as a business-owner, a traveller and someone who does indeed purchase things on occasion, she recognises that this means she takes part in a capitalist society every day. During a conversation with Carolyn Tate back in September last year, Brooke was introduced to the idea of conscious capitalism, in which for-profit organisations are making capitalism stand for something good - for people, for the environment or for social change. It was also through Carolyn that Brooke was introduced to her guest today - Dane O’Shanassy of Patagonia. If you’ve listened to the poggie for any length of time, you’ve probably heard Ben and Brooke talk about Patagonia and how impressed they are with their commitment to ethical manufacturing and the environment. Founded by hardcore climbers, surfers, skiiers, mountaineers and explorers, Patagonia is a company that loves nature and wants to protect it. They actively discourage people from buying new clothes unless they’re needed, and have in-store repair stations where you can have your Patagonia gear fixed for free. They distribute 1% of sales (not profits) every year in to grass-roots campaigns, and are highly engaged both as a company and individuals in environmental activism. They’re currently transitioning to 100% Fair Trade and are incredibly transparent - both in terms of supply chain and business management. In fact, founder Yvon Chouinard’s book ‘Let My People Go Surfing’ is basically the blueprint on which Ben and Brooke are trying to build their own business. Ben and Brooke recently travelled down to Torquay to chat with Dane, and while they do talk about the work Patagonia is doing both here in Australia and globally, they also focus on his personal journey towards a more sustainable, simple life. As a surfer, Dane loves being outdoors, and he and Brooke share a similar philosophy on the best way to get people to actually care about the environment: spend time in it. This is a great conversation that doesn’t shy away from the tension that exists between environmental protection and manufacturing, and also left Brooke feeling hopeful for the possibilities that come when people turn their passion in to action (and activism!) Head over to http://www.slowyourhome.com/145 for links to everything mentioned in today’s episode and to enter the giveaway to win a pack of three Patagonia books (entries close 23:59 March 30, 2017). Our guest today, Carolyn Tate, is someone Nikki's really looked up to in our industry since she first discovered her. She was the first marketer Nikki ever heard to stand up against the industry and say enough is enough – there needs to be a better way.

Last week you heard the first part of Brooke’s chat with Carolyn Tate - founder of The Slow School of Business and founding member of Conscious Capitalism Australia - and today she returns for Part 2! In this episode they go deep into the issue of hyper-consumerism and whether Carolyn feels a sense of ownership of it - considering her background as a marketer. This leads into a really interesting conversation on conscious consumption, what it looks like and how to know if a brand we’re supporting really is ethical, as well as the important accompaniment to conscious consumption, which is conscious capitalism. Brooke and Carolyn also share a whole heap of resources so head over to http://www.slowyourhome.com/106 for all the links. Today Brooke chats with Carolyn Tate, co-founder of The Slow School of Business and Conscious Capitalism Australia. She’s an ex-marketing executive who ‘flicked on the slow switch’ in 2010, after a massive realisation about the life she’d been living. Brooke and Carolyn talk a lot about her personal journey, what changes she’s made over the past 6 years, what she’s still working on and how her life is different now. Carolyn is also a massive advocate for living a purpose-driven life, and they talk a lot about the idea of finding your Why and using it to inform the choices you make and the life you create. They also talk about the problem with work/life balance as one of the core reasons for Carolyn to start The Slow School of Business, and she has some golden tips on how to start affecting change from within an organisation rather than seeing the only solution as finding a new job or starting your own business. There is so much to learn from Carolyn’s personal story, including what happens when we have the courage to listen to that little voice in our heads that’s telling us something isn’t right, that we couldn’t actually fit it all in to one conversation, so stay tuned next week for part two! But in the meantime, don’t forget to head over to http://www.slowyourhome.com/104 for links to books, blog posts and resources mentioned in today’s episode. Are you a woman who’s feeling a little disillusioned by the way the business world is today? When you take a rare moment to slow down, to pause, are you aware of feeling increasingly disconnected from yourself, from community, from nature? And has the thought crossed your mind that there must be a better way? That there’s ample evidence that classic capitalism and our patriarchal society just aren’t working? Notions of scarcity, competition, power, money and fear are limiting us. There’s scope for so much more when we welcome feminine energy with its core of creativity, collaboration, abundance and love to rise up and take its place right alongside the masculine. It’s time for change. These thoughts shared by myself and my friends and colleagues Carolyn Tate and Samantha Nolan-Smith and so we got together and had a wholehearted conversation in late June of 2016. We hope that it connects wit your heart and perhaps inspires some new ideas, a desire for change, recognition of the power you have and the knowledge that you are not alone. Art embodies the language of the soul. It also reflects history, culture, striving, and strife. For Professor Tate, the art of Mesoamerica has been central to her scholarly life since graduate school when she studied under Linda Schele – one of art history’s great scholars of Mayan art, epigraphy, and history. Today, Professor Tate continues her studies of Mayan art history with expanded emphasis on the art and culture of North American indigenous peoples. And, her noted scholarly accomplishments have provided the framework that reinforces a set of teaching commitments that spans offerings from basic art appreciation courses (for non-majors) and art history surveys, to more specialized courses in Mesoamerican, Maya, and North America art, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Her scholarly work was recognized at Texas Tech through the Barney Rushing Research Excellence Award in 2006. Her supervisors praise her teaching, research, and all she does to contribute to the university. At the university level, she has been an active senator in the Faculty Senate during the past few years. In the larger world, she has engaged in curatorial efforts at museums in Toronto, New York, and Houston. So, her acknowledgement as an integrated scholar is well deserved and should be celebrated by our academic community.
