Lisa Wells, author of Believers: Making a Life at the End of the World, explores modern pilgrimage from a secular perspective, attempting to comprehend the force of conviction that motivates someone to eschew all worldly possessions. Ann Sieben, a middle-aged pilgrim from New Jersey who has walked through conflict zones and remote wildernesses in winter with only the clothes on her back (and, more recently, a COVID pass), is Wells's guide of sorts. In what ways does the pilgrim find freedom? What role does gender play in the journey? Can it be a metaphor—for motherhood, say, or for storytelling? When you steep yourself in narratives, whether of saints or the secular, the distance between reader and story gets thinner. You begin to inhabit stories in a new way. “I think that's maybe the crux of the whole thing for me,” said Wells, of pilgrimage. “That it can be a gift to let go of the romantic story so you can, with clear eyes, encounter the embodied reality of your situation.” Read Wells's article: https://harpers.org/archive/2023/04/numinous-strangers-pilgrimage/ Subscribe to Harper's for only $16.97: harpers.org/save
Interest rates have been a hot topic in real estate over the last year. We saw historical lows the previous two years and when interest rates went back up it seems like people had a hard time adjusting their expectations. A lot of prospective buyers and sellers decided to wait and see how things played out, and while interest rates have come back down a little bit in recent months, in a lot of markets there is still low inventory so buyers are facing a lot of competition. This week we have mortgage professional Lisa Wells to talk about all things mortgages and interest rates. She gives us all the stats, gives us her predictions for what's to come and tells us why waiting it out is just costing you even more money in the long run. Lisa also shares an amazing breakdown of exactly what is causing the shortage in inventory. Lisa is super knowledgeable and a true professional. This is a very educational episode and will leave you with tons of talking points for clients and if you are thinking of buying or selling it will arm you with so much information. Let's dive in!

Resiliency is important to healthy aging, and older adults with higher resiliency have an improved quality of life and better mental health despite the adversities they face. In this episode, author and educator Ted Bowman, who specialists in grief, loss, and “honest hope,” talks to host Lisa Wells of the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Eau Claire County about fostering resiliency. Resiliency, Bowman says, is not only about rebounding from setbacks, but about springing forward and adapting to changed circumstances. He encourages older people to examine their experiences to find examples of how they overcame setbacks earlier in life, and tap into some of the same skills. Bowman also discusses the dual process of grief and joy, the importance of building a team when faced with setbacks, and how to build a shelf full of resiliency tools.

Loneliness and social isolation can be a major concern for older adults, putting them at higher risk for Alzheimer's disease and other serious problems. In fact, one-quarter of adults 65 and older are classified as socially isolated. Life changes such as retirement and the death of a love done as well as factors like the COVID-19 pandemic can trigger loneliness. In this episode, author and retired chaplain Moria Kneer speaks with host Lisa Wells of the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Eau Claire County about the difference between being alone and being lonely, the importance of identifying our underlying feelings, and strategies for reducing isolation as we grow older.
Guest: Dr. Tom Dow, Mindful Diagnostics & Therapeutics The statistics are troubling: Alzheimer's disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, and it cannot be prevent, slowed, or cured. One in nine people 65 and older have Alzheimer's, and the share increases with age. However, medical science is advancing, and Eau Claire's Dr. Tom Dow is exploring ways to identify the risks of Alzheimer's disease early and to mitigate those risks. In this episode, Dr. Dow talks with host Lisa Wells of the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Eau Claire County about Alzheimer's disease, the factors that impact it, and an exciting vaccine study happening right here in Eau Claire.

Today's episode is a deep dive into exploring doing good in the context of activism. This podcast exists to explore why we do good, how we do good, and what the implications of our do gooding are. In activist communities, we often see a spectrum of people – from those who participate in activism sporadically, to those who dedicate their entire lives to the causes. At this extreme end, we see the outcasts and visionaries – those living on the fringes of society and making change in their own unique way.In spaces where emotion is high, and beliefs are held closely about the ‘right' way to do things, we often see tensions. People tearing each other down – a dogma of the right way to do things. How does this impact the cause itself? And is something good if it still causes harm?I've invited author and poet Lisa Wells on to today's podcast to talk about her new book, Believers – Making a life at the end of the world, which introduces us to these visionaries and outcasts who have found radical new ways to live and connect to the Earth.
Guest: Cathy Reitz, director, Stand in the Light Memory Choir. Music and singing are good for all of us, especially for people living with dementia: Research has shown that music can evoke memories and emotions even in people with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. Musician and educator Cathy Reitz is starting her sixth year directing the https://www.facebook.com/SITLchoir/ (Stand in the Light Memory Choir in Eau Claire). In this episode, she talks with host Lisa Wells of the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Eau Claire County about the many – and sometimes unexpected – benefits music provides for the mind, body, and soul.
Jade speaks with Lisa Wells, award-winning poet, essayist and author. In her new book, Believers: Making A Life At The End of the World, Lisa seeks out and learns from trailblazers and outliers around the world who are pursuing radically hopeful lifestyles -- even in the face of climate despair. There's so much to glean from this conversation: stories and lessons from those living the change, the treasures that await outside the norm, the beauty of bird language, the mess and wonder of non-tech-mediated human relationships and how to sow a fruitful future. As Lisa puts it, it can take a lifetime to learn how to live -- but hearing from others who have made an art and science of living like tomorrow matters sure helps speed up the process. SHOW NOTESIt's not her first writing rodeo but it's definitely her first book; it took six years! She interviewed those who were on the absolute edge of convention. What can we learn from them? Former Congressman and presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich is Mickey's first guest; he's written a new book (The Division of Light and Power) about a lonely battle he waged to preserve public power in Cleveland during his term as mayor. In the second half of the show, poet Lisa Wells speaks about her new book Believers: Making a Life at the End of the World. It's a collection of biographies of a wide range of individuals who've remained dedicated to preserving and enhancing pieces of land, despite the spectre of catastrophic climate change. Notes: Dennis Kucinich served eight terms in the US House of Representatives, and twice ran for President. But his greatest battle may have been in his one term as mayor of Cleveland in the late 1970s, when he fought off an attempt to privatize the city's municipally-owned electric system. His new book, The Division of Light and Power, tells the story of that struggle. Lisa Wells is a poet and author based in Portland, Oregon. Her conversation with Mickey Huff took place as a Zoom event sponsored by KPFA-FM (Berkeley, CA) and Project Censored.
This summer's heat waves, catastrophic wildfires, and blistering drought have made climate change feel both very real and very overwhelming. What can we do, as individuals, in the face of such massive global disruption? That's the question Lisa Wells set out to answer in her new book “Believers: Making a Life at the End of the World.” Wells, who grew up in Portland, talked to people all over the country who are trying to figure out new ways to live in a new world.

Healthy eating is important at any age, but it becomes even more important as we get older. Registered dietician Pam VanKampen chats with host Lisa Wells of the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Eau Claire County about how our diet can keep our bodies and brains healthy, improve our moods, and boost our energy levels. VanKampen explains how we should find foods that nourish our bodies instead of vilifying “bad” foods.
When we're children, we move our bodies through play. As we get older, the rigors of life – and the impacts of aging – often get in the way. Mary Pica-Anderson, executive director of the L.E. Phillips Senior Center in Eau Claire, talks with host Lisa Wells of the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Eau Claire County about the positive impact of maintaining physical activity on our bodies and minds. Explore the benefits of getting physically active – which can involve everything from gardening to organized classes – and how to sustain those benefits as we age.
At some time in our lives, we will all be caregivers or will receive care from others. Dr. Larry Studt talks with host Lisa Wells of the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Eau Claire County about his own caregiving journey. Larry's wife, Rachel, experienced a rare form of young onset dementia, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, which unexpectedly thrust him into a caregiving role. Larry talks about the challenges this created, the emotions and guilt that come with caregiving, the importance of accepting help, the need for self-care, and the search for hope.
Lisa Wells is raising a son with Borderline Personality Disorder. As a little boy, her child was diagnosed with ADHD. He was throwing furniture, had to be taken out of school and went through all kinds of treatment. He endured a lot of ridicule, punishment, and rejection from school staff for not behaving in the way they expected. Lisa assumes this contributed to the trauma which led to him to develop BPD and an older teen. Lisa shared with me her strategies for staying afloat while her son is drowning. One of the components needed to able to care for your loved one’s high-needs is to realize that you can't be available for them 24/7. You are human too, and if you don't take care of yourself, you won't have anything left to give. This can be terrifying because there are so many “what if’s” and lack of control when you don't do everything that they need. In the long run, if you both want to enjoy your life more and be able to be available without burning out, you cannot place all of the responsibility for their survival on yourself. You sometimes have to let go, and that's okay. Another major strategy Lisa utilizes on a daily basis, is to recognize and measure her physical and emotional capacity to help somebody else. If her son is calls her on the phone, Lisa will pause and take notice if she has at least 50% of her capability to deal with whatever situation might be. If she's already feeling overwhelmed by other things in life -- lacking sleep, the dog barking, and she's involved in getting something done, she takes a “self-care break”, works on her mindset to bring herself back up to at least 50%, and then chooses to reach out and support her son. Lisa has come to realize that the best way to help her son is simply using the practice of radical acceptance. No judgement. If he's only wearing one shoe, she won’t say something negative or critical, but just rolls with it. If he really wants some cigarettes, she will actually go buy them for him. If she shows up in his space, and it is clear that he really just needs to be left alone, she leaves. Fighting against whatever is going on in his life that isn't immediately life-threatening only makes him feel criticized, which can be a big trigger. Lisa chooses to believe that he's doing the best he can, and doesn't push him to be anyone besides who he is in that moment. She communicates her boundaries with her son. When he has a meltdown, she will calmly say that she will not tolerate being yelled at. When a conversation starts to go off track, she will clearly tell him that she's not leaving forever; she just really needs to go get dinner on the table or do some other task, and she will call him again in a couple hours when they both have had time to regroup. Because so much that happens in his life seems like an emergency, it can be hard for him to understand how his mom could choose to not help him in his seemingly desperate situation, but she is working to help him understand that she is a person too, and her needs are just as legitimate as his own. Lisa relates how funny he is and how good he is at the things he's passionate aboutand often invites him over to help her with a project and delights in seeing how he finds the quickest and most efficient way to solve the problem she has presented him with. He loves to help out others. If he has a few extra dollars, he’ll go give it to a homeless person because he knows what it is like to be on the street. He loves being encouraging and making jokes with his neighbors and those around him. BPD is not all darkness. Those suffering from it are full of light… just often not for themselves. The onset of the internet and social media has led to a lot of change for the mortgage industry. Successful people view this as an incredible opportunity, and not something to be afraid of. In the age of online lenders, what is the value we bring to our clients? How do you build a mortgage team of people with different “superpowers”? Why is it so important for us to enjoy the process of getting to our goals? On this episode, Lisa Wells shares on her 22-year career, what motivates her, how she stays relevant and impactful. If you’re not on social media, doing videos and podcasts, and building a brand for yourself, you’ll get left behind. -Lisa Wells Resources: Learn more about joining the team at Partners Mortgage: http://partnersmortgage.com/join-our-team/ To schedule a confidential consultation with Dan, email dant@partnersmortgage.com. Three Things We Learned From This Episode How to compete in the age of online lendersOnline lenders are faster on the surface but they actually make the process more stressful for the consumer, especially by not telling them everything they need up front. The greatest value we bring is creating a better client experience, saving time but still being impactful. The importance of falling love with the process of what we do Driven, high achievers focus on the results more than anything. This can cause self-esteem issues and challenges when things don’t go as planned. It’s also important to enjoy and become invested in the activities and doing them well. How to focus on your best impact activities Sometimes people work too much because they are just busy being busy. Review your activities regularly and ask yourself if what you’re doing is making you money, serving a purpose or bringing you joy. If not, pass it to someone else or cut it out completely. As our industry continues to shift, the thing that will never change is the value and importance of an excellent client experience. We have to make the process as easy as possible in this complicated industry and that means not focusing on transactions, but on solidifying the relationships. It’s critical to become very educated in the conversations that bring the most value to our clients, and consistently review our activities to ensure they are bringing us closer to our goals. It’s all about using technology to create a better client experience and work in a way that brings the most balance to our lives. Every mortgage professional is feeling the squeeze from market disruption and our commodification. What are some of the ways we can show our value and importance in the transaction? How do we bring the human element to all the tech that’s coming into the industry? Why is our partnership with real estate professionals so critical right now? On this episode, 20-year industry veteran Lisa Wells talks about staying relevant in a changing industry and shares on her business evolution. The way real estate and mortgage professionals combat and challenge the disruptors is by doing it together. -Lisa Wells Resources Take your mortgage business to the next level. Click here to schedule your free no-obligation Next Level Coaching Call: https://nextlevello.com/schedule Three Things We Learned From This Episode Why we must educate clients (02:41 - 04:22)Our industry hasn’t done a great job of educating clients. There are so many ways to structure a mortgage and many ways to help the client. The problem is that people don’t have the background knowledge— and opportunities are being missed. How to avoid becoming a commodity (04:25 - 05:12)We complain often about the market reducing us to a commodity, but that’s because we’re not educating people. We’ve got to take the time to show our knowledge. Otherwise, people don’t think of our service beyond giving quotes, and that affects the value placed on what we do. Big companies vs. small companies (08:17 - 09:14)Big companies aren’t necessarily into self-reliant people because they expect to be paid more for the business they generate. Small businesses are focused on learning how to do the business the right way so that the client experience is better, even if that involves more self-reliance. We’re currently experiencing margin compression and getting challenged by online lenders and tech disruptions that seem to be out to eliminate us. The way for us to stay relevant is to show our value by educating clients and actually giving them the best service. We have to showcase our expertise and use tech to enhance what we do. Right now, the best partners we have are real estate agents, as they are in the same boat as us. Real estate agents can no longer look at loan officers as a “necessary evil”, and we can’t look at them that way either. They are necessary as business partners that can help us fight disruption. Welcome to second muse on the Introvert Biz Growth podcast, the show where I talk to introverts who grow their business and make a difference. I’m Sarah Santacroce, your host. If you’re new here, then I want you to know that this is not the usual format of my regular episodes. I post a new show every other Friday, and it’s always a conversation with a fellow introverted entrepreneur who uses his or her introverted superpowers to make a difference. These shows are edited by Tim, my professional podcast editors who also creates amazing shownotes pages. But today’s episode is a muse, unedited, raw content. No editing. No intro music. No bells and whistles. I share these muses to make you think, to inspire you, to break the rules Today’s muse is composed of 2 parts: first I muse by myself about a quote I came across this week and then I’ll also share a quick conversation I had with Lisa Wells, a previous podcast guest, fellow introvert and friend of mine about the topic ‘Marketing with Integrity’. But first the quote. It’s a quote by Carolyn Tate, author of the book ‘Conscious Marketing’. It goes like this: The Business of Business is no longer business. The business of business is making the world a better place. I’ll read it again so you can really soak it in: The Business of Business is no longer business. The business of business is making the world a better place. Does that resonate with you? I’m sure it does, otherwise you wouldn’t be listening to this podcast where we’re all about making a difference. But this quote just really hit home for me and its people who have those same values who I want to surround myself with. People who are in business to make the world a better place. Which is why I’m on a mission to create the gentlebusinessrevolution Because we need more gentle people in business, more kindness, more love. And now as promised, here’s my conversation with Lisa Wells about the topic ‘Marketing with Integrity and what that means to her. Enjoy. Thanks for listening ! Thanks so much for listening to this muse. Apologies for the rather poor audio quality this time. Lisa was in a rented apartment in Germany, so not her usual set up. Have a great week Warmly Sarah

Are you in a rut in your business? We've all been there. This is the episode for you! Lisa shares her knowledge on all things fun and joy in your biz.
Meet Lisa Wells, for 11 years Lisa lived with sugar addiction, which lead to depression and anxiety and living with overwhelm. Taking anti-depressants, seeing psychiatrists, psychologists and reading self- help books just couldn’t get to the core of the matter for Lisa, who found herself doing well for about a week after her sessions but she would always end up back on the couch stuffing her face with blocks of chocolate daily. Lisa started journaling to try and make sense of her out of control world and it was in one writing session she wrote “Each day we have the opportunity to face our stuff or stuff our face”. Not only did that make Lisa laugh, it also rang true for her, Lisa explains: “Each day I would stuff my face when really what I needed to do was to stop what I was doing and face myself emotionally. Lisa claims her now long lasting road to recovery started when she began to face her negative thinking and saw what lay beneath the surface of those unrelenting and exhausting negative thought patterns. “Either the situation is controlling you or you are in control of the situation.” “I was letting the food situation control me and when I realized that I could never eat enough chocolate or drink enough wine to fill the gap of what I really needed, I knew that I would have to take control of the situation. Living through such an intense and extreme emotional experience such as food addiction is a relief for Lisa now, who, thanks to the 10 steps she takes daily to ensure her freedom from food hell, has peace with food and no longer dreads going down the chocolate aisle in the supermarket. Overcoming binge eating, emotional eating, overeating and food addiction is possible and Lisa is excited to bring her experience and her unique techniques to help other Mum’s struggling with food addiction and over eating. https://www.facebook.com/foodfearfreedom/ www.sexyselfish.com
