In turbulent times marked by economic volatility, environmental breakdowns, and widespread distrust, what we're experiencing may feel unprecedented—but we've been here before. And as Paul Polman reminds us in his milestone conversation with Carol Cone, we are not without a compass. Paul, the former CEO of Unilever, is one of today's most respected voices in sustainable leadership. He joined the 200th episode of Purpose 360 not to sugarcoat the challenges, but to ground us in enduring truths.Paul's insights are rooted both in strategy and humanity. He speaks of sustainability as the “heart of business,” where values like dignity, compassion, and the Golden Rule are guiding principles. He urges leaders to develop their own “inner core” to build resilient businesses but also resilient selves—emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. And he reminds us that real leadership today means moving from “human doings” back to human beings. Business, he says, must be structured to serve—anchored in long-term purpose and in solidarity with both people and planet. At its core, Paul's message to leaders and companies is both visionary and deeply grounded. He challenges companies to stop whispering behind closed doors and instead step forward together with clarity, courage, and moral conviction. The future, he believes, belongs to those who act with heart. And in a world that often feels fractured, Paul's voice is a steady reminder that it's our shared humanity—and our willingness to serve others—that will lead us through.Listen for key insights on why:“Soft” values are the most strategic and essentialBusiness must serve humanity (not the other way around)Successful leadership starts from withinSilence to political changes is not a neutral position Resources + Links:Paul Polman's LinkedInPaul Polman's WebsiteNet PositiveIMAGINEPaul's Reflection on the Passing of Pope Francis (00:00) - Welcome to Purpose 360 (00:13) - Episode 200 with Paul Polman (02:40) - About Paul (05:03) - Personal Purpose (07:20) - POV on What's Happening Today (10:15) - Optimistic Outlook (12:41) - Being Authentic to Values (14:19) - Pope Francis (17:15) - Leaders (21:21) - What to Do When Attacked on DEI or ESG (24:28) - Moving the Boundaries (27:23) - Role of Employees (28:36) - Conscious Quitting Results (30:04) - Role of Humanity (32:29) - Last Thoughts (34:46) - Wrap Up

The only way to resist answering that question with your job title or position is to know your personal purpose. Good morning, my fellow trailblazers and life navigators! Today, we're diving deep into the essence of what fuels our journey—our personal purpose. It's not just a buzzword for me; it's the very foundation of my TEDx talk and an experience that transformed my life. Picture this: a lighthouse in the vast expanse of life, guiding us through the fog of daily routines and existential quandaries. This lighthouse is our personal purpose, not just a beacon but a robust decision-making tool that helps us chart our course through life's tumultuous seas. Finding our purpose is akin to uncovering a treasure map to our ultimate success, transcending the mundane cycle of work, earn, and repeat. It's about asking the deeper questions—why the wealth, why the accolades? What legacy do we wish to leave behind? I've journeyed through this process, from lacking direction to helping others define their success across all facets of life. It's not just about financial or physical goals but encompassing spiritual, familial, and philanthropic aspirations. Let's ignite that fire within, refuse to drift aimlessly, and command our destiny with purpose-driven clarity. Because remember, if it's not a resounding "hell yes," then it's a no. Live life to the third power, not in mediocrity. Join me in this quest to not just exist, but to truly live with intention and leave a mark on this world that echoes through eternity. #PersonalGrowth #LifeGoals #Motivation #SuccessMindset #PurposeDrivenLife #UltimateSuccess #LifeThirdPower #CommandYourLife Craving a little more direction on your path to greatness? Having a diverse and inclusive workplace makes good business sense, but the truth is that we're stuck at an impasse. Companies are so focused on how many people from different backgrounds they employ that they're missing the point. It's not about the numbers. It's about ensuring that every individual is equitably woven into the fabric of the organization and has opportunities to advance and thrive. We invited Margaret Spence, an advocate for transformative change in the DEI landscape, to elaborate on where companies currently stand with DEI and what needs to change. With a commitment to challenging the status quo, questioning barriers, and leading inclusively, Margaret offers a compelling vision. Her expertise extends beyond rhetoric, by proving that DEI is not just a checkbox but an ongoing commitment.Listen for insights on:Recommended data points for tracking DEI success and impactHow being entrenched in the status quo can obstruct inclusionNavigating bias and inclusion challenges as a person of colorResources + Links:Margaret Spence's LinkedInAbout Margaret SpenceEmployee to CEO Action ProjectThe Inclusion Learning LabInclusion Unscripted Podcast (00:00) - Welcome to Purpose 360 (00:13) - Margaret Spence (02:47) - Margaret's Background (06:28) - Personal Purpose (08:30) - Inclusion Lab (11:30) - DEI (16:42) - Examples Doing DEI Well (18:07) - Growth and Barriers (24:15) - Employee to CEO Project (25:58) - Inclusion Lab (28:14) - Cohorts (29:01) - Measurement (31:07) - Recommendations (33:51) - Looking to the Future of DEI (37:36) - Last Thoughts

“You have to have a bias for action in the world if you want to do your part to make it a better place.” —Jake WoodJake Wood's “bias for action” is indisputable: after graduating from college, he joined the Marine Corps and served two years overseas. His return to civilian life wasn't easy. Like many veterans, Jake was faced with a loss in structure, purpose, and sense of impact. After a close friend and fellow veteran committed suicide, Jake founded non-profit Team Rubicon with a dual purpose: (1) to serve global communities before, during, and after disasters and crises, and (2) to reintegrate veterans into civilian life through opportunities to utilize military training for communities in need.Ten years later, Jake welcomed his second daughter, who required surgery shortly after she was born, into the world. The experience sparked a new idea to empower more people to have a greater impact and sense of purpose. In 2021, Jake co-founded Groundswell, a corporate philanthropy platform that allows you to “give like Gates, be taxed like Warren Buffet, and be recognized like Rockefeller.”We invited Jake to lead us through his purpose journey, from creating social entrepreneurship ventures to the impact your company can make through them.Listen for insights on:What to expect from venture investorsHow companies can support and enable employees in their philanthropic givingHow employee-driven corporate donations drive better business outcomesAdvice for pursuing greater impact through social entrepreneurismResources + Links:Jake Wood's LinkedInTeam RubiconGroundswellNew York Times: “Once a Warrior, Then a Nonprofit Leader, Now an Entrepreneur”Forbes: How Groundswell Is Shifting Giving From The 1% To The 99%“Once a Warrior” Memoir (00:00) - Welcome to Purpose 360 (00:13) - Jake Wood • Groundswell (01:30) - Jake's Personal Purpose (02:32) - Evolving Purpose (04:00) - Team Rubicon (06:49) - Helping Veterans (09:19) - Creating Groundswell (12:12) - Structure (13:37) - Elements of Groundswell (17:19) - Response (18:17) - Example (19:52) - Philanthropy Trends (20:41) - Inspiration (21:32) - Insights (23:01) - Empathy and Love in Leadership (24:02) - Last Word (24:44) - Wrap Up

In 1982 Tom Peters wrote the ground-breaking book "In Search of Excellence." When that book was published, Chairman Mao had recently died; China was making little progress in closing the economic gap between China and the industrialized nations. Here we are, more than 40 years and a digital revolution later, China has become the second largest economy in the world. The UK has left the EU and we had the 2008 global recession and a recent pandemic. That's just a quick overview of some business changes since the 1980s. A natural question is, what does it take to create excellence in today's multi-generational workforce? Post-pandemic leaders have faced the Great Resignation, followed quickly by the phenomena known as Quiet Quitting. How, with all this going on, can we become high-performing organizations during, what appears to be, a talent desert? Let's find out. Our guest for the next two episodes is Adrian Simpson. Adrian is the co-founder of Wavelength Companies. For 30 years, Adrian has taken over 1,500 leaders physically and virtually inside the boardrooms and shop floors of some of the world's most admired, successful, and progressive organizations. In recent years he has taken clients to Silicon Valley, China, and India to visit the likes of Apple, Alibaba, Airbnb, Tesla, Netflix, Lego, Ritz-Carlton hotels, Aravind Eye Care System, and Southwest Airlines. Recently, Adrian's hosted live virtual symposiums with the CEOs of IKEA, Unilever, and the President of Four Seasons, and ran a two-day Inside Digital China Event that took 120 clients inside, what is unequivocally, the world's most advanced digital economy. Through their lens, Adrian experiences the defining characteristics of success and is uniquely qualified to advise organizations on how to become high-performing organizations, even in this talent desert.
