Mindset Matters - Episode #158 - Who Am I If I'm Not That? Rediscovering Purpose Beyond Identity

The Everyday Millionaire

In this episode of Mindset Matters, hosts Patrick and Steffany delve into the compelling topic of identity beyond professional and personal roles. They explore the question, “Who am I if I'm not that?” and discuss how deeply people's identities are tied to what they do rather than who they truly are. Patrick and Steffany reflect on how common it is to introduce ourselves by our professions and roles, which creates a reliance on these roles for self-worth and value. This reliance, they explain, often leads to a crisis when those roles are no longer part of our lives, such as in career transitions, retirement, or the shift to becoming an empty nester. The conversation turns to how societal expectations shape our identities, often leaving people unprepared when major life changes remove the titles they've depended on. Citing statistics, Patrick and Steffany discuss how the lifespan post-retirement has drastically reduced in recent years. This trend indicates a profound need for purpose, especially for individuals accustomed to busy careers. Many retirees struggle to find meaning outside of work, even experiencing health issues due to this loss of purpose. Patrick notes the recurring trend of public figures like rock stars returning to the stage not just for financial reasons, but to fulfill an inner drive for purpose. They highlight the importance of people, purpose, and passion as fundamental elements that keep us engaged and inspired. Steffany emphasizes that without a meaningful contribution to make, individuals may experience melancholy or a sense of emptiness. She relates this to athletes she has worked with, particularly those transitioning out of professional sports, who often find it difficult to define their worth outside their athletic achievements. Steffany stresses that early conversations around these identity shifts can alleviate some of the struggles, allowing athletes, professionals, and anyone in a similar situation to embrace new chapters with confidence. The episode closes with the parable of the Golden Buddha, a clay statue hiding a core of solid gold. Over centuries, the gold was concealed, much like how people cover their true selves with layers of societal expectations and roles. Steffany and Patrick use this metaphor to remind listeners of the value within each person—value that can only be discovered by “chipping away” at the external identity markers. They urge listeners to ask themselves, “Who am I beneath all these roles?” and to consider how self-discovery and authenticity contribute to a meaningful, passion-driven life.

Join Jonathan Prescott for an exploration of our own goodness. From the cache! Until an all-new episode premiers this October, please enjoy this recast. Bob Ross, American painter and iconic TV host of the 80s and 90s, famously told us that there are no mistakes, only “happy little accidents.” There are numerous examples of history happening by accident--archaeologists accidentally stumbling upon a find, scientists accidentally discovering a breakthrough--and today we explore four such stories. First, we travel to 1856 when a teenager accidentally discovered mauve and synthetic dye while he was on vacation, which led to the pioneering of immunology and a Nobel prize. Then we head to 1940s France, when a group of teenagers chasing after a dog accidentally stumbled upon Lascaux cave, one of the greatest prehistoric finds of all time. Then we travel to 1767 to visit the Ayutthaya kingdom just before it was invaded by Burma. Almost 200 years later, a seemingly unremarkable statue pulled from its ruins finally tells its secrets: the Golden Buddha or, Phra Phuttha Maha Suwana Patimakon, is now one of the world's most famous statues, and if it hadn't been for an accident in the 1950s, we would all still believe it was made of nothing more than plaster and colored glass. Finally, we skip ahead all the way into the 2000s for a look at some accidental breakthrough MS research. Come join me as we uncover some of history's most incredible happy little accidents.

Her recently released book, The Call To Freedom: Heal your Pain, Awaken your Loving Presence, is an Internationally Acclaimed memoir filled with personal, spiritual, and embodiment coaching for anyone that is ready to answer “The Call”. Here are the takeaways... Play is vitally important and when you incorporate it into your life everything feels easier. We are all the Golden Buddha. We all have essential golden essence but we sometimes forget because of our human experiences and programming from our experiences and the people around us. We are told pain is something that we should avoid. It can be a coping mechanism to avoid feeling pain. But when we face our pain, we become a part of the healing of the entire planet. Healing heals forward. When we individually heal we help heal the divisiveness of the planet. We become whole when we can integrate all the parts of ourselves into the whole being through somatic healing. When you are chasing tomorrows as in "I'll be happy when...." you will always receive the thing you want - tomorrow. The work is to be happy now. When you are unwilling to feel your pain, you become unable to feel the blissful emotions. Science tells us that even the toughest emotions last about 90 seconds. When we can label the sensation, the sensation can shift. Acknowledging sensations and emotionality is a way to shift your perceptions. Slowing down is an essential component of this practice. When you avoid pain, you are inadvertently avoiding pleasure. Pleasure is right on the other side of your pain. The best way to find a life you really love is to love the life you have right now. Stop chasing your dreams because that means they are running away from you. Instead, consider living your dreams right now. You are enough. Connect with Diana... "Everyone here, everyone on this earth has a light that's buried inside of them. And it's our goal to get back to that child that we once were, that had goals, dreams, aspirations before the world destroyed our our vision, and put that fear of failure on us."– Jacob Brown, Transformational SpeakerIn this edition of 'Iron Sharpens Iron', James highlights 3 life lessons from his interview with Jacob Brown.1. In order to #failforward, you first have to try.Jacob's platform is “fail forward.” It's the concept that when you fail, you're still learning and as long as you keep going, you're making progress toward your goals or dreams. But the truth is you won't make progress if you let fear stop you from even trying. The fear of failure will keep you on the sidelines, keep you out of the game. You have to be willing to put yourself out there and risk being embarrassed, or failing. 2. The clay and mud that hides your gifts are part of your story. When Jacob talked about the Golden Buddha, he makes a point that when you overcome self doubt and self-imposed limitations, that your story shows others what's possible. It inspires to believe that maybe, “I can do it, too!”That's the connectedness of the human existence. Other people inspire us to try the thing that we don't feel qualified for because we see the difficulty they had to go through; the resilience and perseverance and grit it took.As the clay and the mud that conceals your God-given gifts starts to chip away you start to think differently, act differently, relate differently, believe differently.3. Meekness is power under control.--------------** Confidence Covered By Humility is a podcast by James Mayhew for anyone who wants to lead their business, their team and their home with humble confidence.Connect with James on LinkedInhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/jamesrmayhew/High Performance Workplace Culture Video Serieshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBGgrjEdy18&list=PL_CshlQDwEH7r-H281v9MkXSspjlihgmHWebsitehttps://jamesmayhew.com

And depth.” -Joseph Campbell We are back!  Took a week off since we were in PR, on a mission for some R&R, but also a mission of sharing Muay Thai with our peeps on  “Isla De Encanto”. We are all champions in this journey called life, but we sometimes let theses struggle cover up our true essence. We let the “7 Dictators” rule our lives. When it comes to getting unstuck and back in the fight, it's not just about “sucking it up” or accepting the cards we are dealt, then settling for less and lowering your standards. It's about agreeing to find another way, focusing on the tools to guide you through the battle. Then after finding the another way, being aware that down the road, you will do it all over again. That is the cycle of Champions Uprising.  Don't just accept or acknowledge your disappointments and hardships, agree to find a way to grow through what you go through. Champ Up!! Chris and Sarah

40. How To Feel Good Enough For Yourself? Inspirational Story Of The Golden Buddha

You Can Be Healed

Have you ever asked how to feel good enough for yourself? In this episode, I want to share a short inspirational story about the Golden Buddha in Thailand and hope it can inspire you to see the gold and light with you. This Golden Buddha story is a beautiful metaphor for the potential and unique beauty that's hidden inside each of us. Each of us is gold on the inside, when we are born we are pure and shine with light like the golden Buddha. Then as we grow up, we start adding different layers of clay by picking up all the limiting beliefs, opinions, judgements, expectations from our parents, teachers, bosses and co-workers, society, the media, the church, etc etc. We slowly cover up our true golden buddha in layer upon layer with frustration, anger, resentment, guilt, shame, sadness, fear, etc. We forgot the gold inside of us and we got disconnected from our happiness and true purpose. Imagine what would you feel and what will happen in your life if you liberated the greatness which already lies within you, by finally BELIEVING that you are whole, competent and more than good enough? And the truth is, you are enough, and more than good enough. Episode 15 - Discovering Your Wholeness & Harnessing Your Potential Welcome to Season 2 of Spirit of Success! I wanted to start this season with a solo episode to wrap up my thoughts from Season 1 and introduce in more detail to what I am doing other than this podcast! I have gotten lots of questions about the work I am doing now and I wanted to share that with you! I also wanted to touch on some of the most important concepts for self awareness and self empowerment that I believe will be keys to navigating challenges for the rest of 2020 and beyond. During this episode I discuss: Why Neale Donald Walsh inspired both of my Season 1 ending reflections What heartbreaking experience from the Chiropractic office led me to what I am doing now  Why reframing pain from the Eastern medicine perspective can be the most beneficial thing for you  What signs you may be missing if you experience physical pain How your body is like a dashboard & how I help clients understand what their body is telling them The theory of holes and what that has to do with overall health  The observer effect & why you should know and relate what you see to your values The story of the Golden Buddha and how it applies to you!  Host Bio:  My career started out as a Chiropractic Physician treating patients all over North America from British Columbia to Florida. I believe we all come to Earth with a purpose in our souls. However, when we take  form on Earth we forget. Life designed to help us remember who  we are and what our purpose is on Earth. Being an energy worker/healer and connecting the mind, body and soul is my calling. I have heard the call for a very long time and I am now listening with my heart. I have witnessed with a front seat view suffering in my patients and experienced the same fate myself. Early on in my career I faced burnout, chronic fatigue syndrome and persistent lower back pain. I was also depressed and suicidal. Believe it or not, I would not trade these experiences for the world. Looking back at these experiences, they were just signs for me to recognize that I was not listening to my soul’s true purpose. It sent me on a quest to find myself once again. It led me down a path I could have never imagined for myself - I reconnected with my spirituality in new ways and began to study the mind with some of the best in the world -  I became a Consultant working alongside Bob Proctor at the Proctor Gallagher Institute. I started to combine this knowledge and experience with my training as a Chiropractor and the results for my clients were nothing short of amazing. Instead of telling me how their physical symptoms were improving, we were having conversations about the transformations that were happening in their life! It was at this point I knew this unique combination of information needed to be in the hands of more people in the world. I am uniquely positioned to speak to the challenges people face in their everyday lives from multiple angles and help them connect the dots like I did for myself, and have helped others to do the same. I believe in increasing awareness about the whole human experience and how that literally shapes the reality you are living on Earth. Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk: true-life, practical, funny, heart-breaking, insightful human experience stories from women who are walking their lives while their lives walk them and the lasting difference these journeys have made. You’ll recognize yourself in stories of adversity, challenge, fear, discovery, adventure, expression, and more. Why? Because, the sorcery of stories is this: they help each of us to be seen and heard, to understand and be understood. I’m your host, Diane Wyzga.Today my guest is Sarah B Rawz who’s joining us from Virginia. When last we spoke I was beginning to pose a question to Sarah B about a favorite topic of hers: From Gremlins to Golden Buddha. Let’s hear what this talented, insightful, and fabulous coach has to share with us.Minute0:00 to 2:20 IntroductionFrom Gremlins to Golden Buddha2:00 to 8:45  Discomfort and the GremlinsHow do we discern the inner Bad Mind Radio voice from our wisdomDiscomfort as a topic is so present for me and, I think, so many of us. It ties in beautifully to the Gremlin/Golden Buddha topic: discerning the deprecating inner voices from the wisdom, especially potent and challenging in the midst of discomfort! The part of me that says I am not enough, arrogant, afraid, and so on - these are gremlinsGremlins behave as loud, over-powering, influencers who know which buttons to push versus the quiet voice of inner wisdomSarah B stumbled on a useful technique: naming the parts of us that are gremlins and befriend them as a  practice and a processWompuss is her Gremlin of Not EnoughAnother insight from a partnered meditation called focusing (Hindenberg burning) illuminated Wompuss as not fierce but sad and blue and haystack-ishThese exercises changed conversations with wounded parts of herselfPractical tip: approach the self with compassion to get to the voice of wisdomOffer compassion to access wisdom and knowingHow did the foster children experience inform Sarah B’s own gremlin experienceThe gremlins may be "foster children" and the notion parallels the image of a night-frightened childWe honor the emotional reality of the child's night fright but don’t buy in to the interpretation of fear, for example, as being monsters under the bed8:45 to 12:45 The Golden Buddha Story  Sarah B tells the storyThe story is a metaphor for what we cover up, what we can chip away, and what we can negotiate to let go of to live freely, profoundly accepting ourselvesProcess of learning gremlins and selves is a process of growth, more information, more tools, to negotiate a golden life12:45 to 46:36 Three Tips to Shift Gremlin to Golden BuddhaMost important tip: perpetually attempting extraordinary patience because our life is a journey toward uncoveringSecond tip: Use your body as your guide. Take 30 seconds to practice a full body scan to light up the hot spots of discomfort, experience the sensations, and inquire into what’s going on. This way we build trust with ourselves to uncover inner wisdomThird tip: Practice noticing and appreciating each pleasure, each joy, each tiny accomplishment“How could this get any better?”  Says that this is great and I’m ready for even better! From gratitude comes energyNetworking As Discomfort - So Now What?  16:40 to 22:50  Networking Is Icky and InsincereNetworking as discomfort - a weighted wordParticularly relevant with COVID and networking onlineWe are no longer mixing in person; so, now what? How do I network now in stucknessHow do we manage the minefields with the gremlin voiceBegin here: translate ‘networking’ into ‘relationship building’Approach the relationship with curiosity to see what arrivesWe live in an inevitable web of interconnection; we get to choose to lean in or lean awayNetworking is relationship buildingWithin relationship building is trust and curiosity to see what might be thereWhat might be there waiting for me in this box of chocolates that looks like a personAs long as your “ask” comes from authentic intention (1) we are people being people who need one another, and (2) feels good being of supportCross-pollination: good for the bees and good for the peopleLegacy22:50 to 27:55  Lasting Results"I'm not saying I'm gonna change the world, but I guarantee that I will spark the brain that will change the world." ~ Tupac ShakurWithout biological children, what happens to my nameIf I don’t have a literal legacy, my personal and professional impact is the energy ripple to betterment, empathy, and  compassion“Each one teach one” (English As a Second Language) Just do your work and trust that we came here with a cosmic contract to be of use: to live, to work, to loveSarah B’s professional role: Learn - Share - RepeatA source of joy for Sarah B to experience life being of use and support to benefit others  27: 55 to 31:09  Thank You With a Full HeartBefore I say thank you I want to mention that all social media links as well as all the connections to Sarah B’s website, newsletter and blog are posted below in these Episode Notes. This episode focuses on the power of combining the cutting edge modalities of Brainspotting and EFT(Emotional Freedom Technique) to allow clients to work through obstacle Mantra #1: “We don’t have to know what it is, to know that it is”. This is actually a quote from one of the slides from the Brainspotting training (Phase One). Brainspotting also follows the principle of uncertainty which means that the brainspotter must not assume what is going on with the client or where the session will go. So much can happen without us needing to understand the details of it. Mantra #2: We don’t have to suffer. With noninvasive and relatively gentle modalities such as Brainspotting and EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) Mantra #3: Progress can be fast (it doesn’t have to take long). Jenn describes some client stories where she has seen people shift in just one session Mantra #4: In order to get to the “gold” (or the “glory” as referred to in the episode title), sometimes you have to get the “gunk” out of the way. (This metaphor reminds me of the story of the Golden Buddha), https://carolyntate.co/the-story-of-the-golden-buddha/ Jenn described it as unclogging the gunk in the sink drain. Modalities such as Brainspotting and EFT allow clients to break free from the gunk! And why should we bother to go through the “gunk removal process” through modalities such as Brainspotting and EFT? -Save time and money -Stop having to go to ongoing therapy -Don’t get sick (books like “The Body Keeps the Score” talk about how unresolved emotional issues are the drivers for many of our ailments -Realize peak performance and be the best version of yourself More about Jenn DeLorenzo. Jenn’s passion is collaborating with clients to create their personal blueprint for health, wellness and joy. A vital part of her approach is instilling her clients with a sense of ownership in their therapeutic outcomes. She does this by introducing various exercises, strategies and daily practices, including advanced techniques like Brainspotting and EFT. By helping her clients clear out emotional and physical traumas, they can live free of the repetitive patterns and limiting beliefs that hold them back. When she isn’t working, you can find Jenn hiking in the woods, walking on the beach, and taking photos of all things nature—especially any and all dogs she encounters along the way.   Interested in becoming the author of your own life story? In Fireside Chat No. 8, Lacy Frazer and Marie Mohler discuss the film, Finding Joe (by Patrick Solomon) as it relates to the Journey of Personal Transformation. In this fireside chat, Lacy and Marie talk about the overarching themes of "the hero's journey" that Joseph Campbell identified and explored so deeply ~ so that so many of us could learn the deeper skills for living a truly alive, truly meaningful, and truly authentic and inspired life. There are additional speakers and experts in the fields of mindfulness, mythology, and the work of Joseph Campbell sprinkled throughout the film, to illustrate the stages of the hero's journey in profoundly inspiring ways. Lastly, there are child actors that illustrate the story of the Golden Buddha told in this film . . . and that illustrate a knight's journey to slay a deep dragon . . . where the dragon is actually our ego or conditioned selves. There are so many incredible take-aways in this film, and so many ahas for the soul . . . that affirm the greater context of WHY we make these journeys in the first place and that can offer a bigger context for the GEMS in the JOURNEYS of our lives . . . including our challenges and biggest obstacles. Marie and Lacy are huge fans of this film, for the incredible role it plays in highlighting, outlining, and illustrating the hero's journey for us all . . . that we ALL make en route to rediscovering the Golden Buddha inside ourselves. We will include the link below to watch the trailer and to learn how to access the complete film directly through the "Finding Joe" website. This is a great podcast for anyone exploring change, facing a formidable obstacle or challenge, rising into something new, or seeking to heal some aspects and patterns in their life that previously seemed unmanageable or insurmountable. There are inner resources that these journeys are calling out in all of us, that can only be acquired by the lived experience of facing our greatest fears and rising into a higher and brighter version of ourselves in our lives today. Finding Joe is a fantastic film and inspirational depiction of Joseph Campbell's work and the timeless "hero's journeys" that we all make to rediscover more of who we truly are! Welcome to Episode 7 of the Decoding Purpose podcast. Over the last few weeks we have explored many facets of what it is to live a life of purpose. We have had conversations that define purpose, look at the science behind purpose, the role of storytelling, purpose in leadership, collaborative purpose, and of course in our last episode we looked at The Purpose Effect, a conversation with a core focus on the intersection between business and purpose. In today’s podcast I interview Carolyn Tate, a marketer by trade, turned author, with a passion for purpose-digging, writing, speaking, teaching and community. With 20 years in large organisations such as Westpac, Merrill Lynch and running her own business, her insight into our personal sense of purpose and the way this interacts with organisational purpose is unique and incredibly insightful. Her company, Carolyn Tate & Co. is an education and publishing company dedicated to unearthing a higher purpose in people and organisations. What I loved about interviewing Carolyn is while she is certainly an expert of purpose in business, her approach to purpose looks at the unfolding or rediscovery of purpose. She explores the idea that we are all born with purpose as an innate part of who we are, and that it is conditioning, belief systems and cultural paradigms that lead us to burying our purpose away into the unconscious parts of who we are. With that in mind, how do we go about remembering who we are...and rediscovering the unique purpose we were born with. In today's conversation Carolyn and I discuss: The cultural paradigms and beliefs that can cause us to bury or forget our purpose The role leaders can play in unearthing personal purpose in order to activate organisational purposeWhat a business can learn about purpose from the cycles of nature The differences between purpose and passion The role of purpose in influencing decision makingHow to differentiate between purpose and distractions And finally we end with a beautiful meditation to assist you in unearthing your golden buddha. Just a warning if you are driving your car, maybe save the last few minutes for a quieter time! Welcome to another episode of Decoding Purpose with the incredible Carolyn Tate. https://carolyntate.co/

OPTIMIZE with Brian Johnson | More Wisdom in Less Time

A few +1s ago, we talked about Walter Russell and the sound of joy.    Today I’d like to talk about another one of his powerful insights.   Here it is.    He tells us: “Mediocrity is self-inflicted. Genius is self-bestowed.”   Here’s the slightly longer version: “I believe that every man has consummate genius within him. Some appear to have it more than others only because they are aware of it more than others are, and the awareness or unawareness of it is what makes each one of them into masters or holds them down to mediocrity. I believe that mediocrity is self-inflicted and that genius is self-bestowed.”   Today’s +1 is very simple.   Are you bestowing genius upon yourself or inflicting mediocrity?   Well, which is it?   Genius. Mediocrity.   I agree with Walter (and countless other teachers). We ALL have “consummate” (Golden Buddha!) genius within ourselves.    Can you see it?

Jack Canfield Episode Recap   Bio   You probably know Jack Canfield as the co-creator and co-author of the New York Times #1 best-selling Chicken Soup for the Soul book series which currently has 225 titles in the series and more than 500 million copies in print in 47 languages.   He is also the founder and President of the Canfield Training Institute, which trains entrepreneurs, corporate leaders, managers and sales professionals in how to accelerate the achievement of their personal, professional and financial goals.   Jack has personally helped hundreds of thousands of people on six different continents become multi-millionaires, business leaders, best-selling authors, leading sales professionals, successful entrepreneurs, and world-class athletes while at the same time creating balanced, fulfilling and healthy lives.   Jack is a dynamic speaker and was recently inducted into the National Speakers Association’s Speakers Hall of Fame.   He has appeared on more than 1000 radio and television shows including Oprah, Montel, Larry King Live, the Today Show, and two hour-long PBS Specials devoted exclusively to his work.  Jack is also one of the teachers featured in the recent hit movies The Secret, The Truth and The Tapping Solution.      Jack’s best-known success resources are the New York Times best-selling book “The 10th Anniversary of the Success Principles: How to Get from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be, The Power of Focus, The Aladdin Factor, and Jack Canfield’s Key to Living the Law of Attraction.  All of these resources consist of powerful strategies designed to empower and inspire individuals to achieving success.  Jack’s vision is to train 1 million people his “success principles” to pass on his legacy to others.  He now has resources, live trainings and online certification course work available.    Jack has been presenting these powerful principles and breakthrough strategies for 40 years to corporations, governments and universities in more than 30 countries. His clients have included Virgin Records, SONY Pictures, Daimler-Chrysler, KFC, Federal Express, GE, Johnson & Johnson, Merrill Lynch, Campbell’s Soup, Re/Max, The Million Dollar Forum, The Million Dollar Roundtable, and The Young Presidents Organization.      Episode Outline:   • A Family Disease – Jack and I begin our conversation by discussing how even though he personally hasn’t struggled with substance abuse or addiction, he has had some very tough times as a child living with an angry alcoholic father, a mother who crossed the line from abuse to dependence, and an aunt and grandmother as well as two of his own children struggling with substance abuse.   • The Golden Buddha – Jack shares a story about a Golden Buddha and how it relates to those setting out on a path of sobriety.   • Can I Ever Drink Again – Jack addresses the two most common questions that come up in regards to the 30-Day Sobriety Solution, which are 1) Can I ever drink again and 2) Do I need to quit drinking right now?   • The Importance of 30 Days – Jack and I discuss an interesting experiment conducted by NASA that demonstrates why it takes 25-30 days to successfully reprogram the brain.   • Event + Response = Outcome – Jack breaks down an equation he uses in his book which states that E + R = O, or, Event + Response = Outcome. From The 30 Day Sobriety Solution: “Every outcome you experience in life—sobriety or alcoholism, excessive drinking or “normal” drinking, financial success or poverty, health or sickness, happiness or dissatisfaction—is the result of how you have responded to an earlier event or events in your life. The formula states that if you don’t like the outcomes you are experiencing in your life today, you have two options: 1) You can blame the event (E) for your lack of results (O) or 2) You can change your responses (R) to the events (E) —the way things are—until you get the outcomes (O) you want.”   • Why Do You Drink? – There’s a brief but very important section of The 30 Day Sobriety Solution that explores why people drink, noting that alcohol (or any other substance) is merely the symptom, whereas the real problem lies elsewhere, which Jack and I explore.   • The Importance of Action – Jack elaborates on an interesting statistic he shared in his book regarding the percentage of information we retain after 2 weeks time and how it depends on the various ways in which we take it in.   • The Power of Vision – Jack and I conclude our conversation by addressing one of the themes of the major themes of the book, which is how to get from where you are to where you want to be, or knowing where you are today vs. where you want to be in the future, and the importance of creating a vision and detailed description around that.   Recommendations:   Jack's Website   Jack’s Books: The 30-Day Sobriety Solution, The Success Principles, The Power of Focus   Other Books: In The Realm of Hungry Ghosts by Gabor Mate, Recovering Joy by Kevin Griffin, No Mud, No Louts by Thich Nhat Hanh

I want to wag my finger, not just at the Zen teachers caught in scandals recently (although at most of them too), but at the reactions of some folks to the scandals. Particularly, I want to call out: Those folks ... some of them fellow Buddhist priests or moderators of Buddhist forums ... who would seek to ignore, hide or explain away some of these scandals, like sweeping dirt under a rug. Shame on them, shame on all of us, and we are contributing in part to these things if we do not look them square on. But at the same time, I wish to question those folks who would lump all these so called "sex scandals" together ... both the few (very few!) true predators, date rapists, serial seducers and other abusers who misuse their role, trust and influence as "teachers" and clergy ... and those other folks who may have fallen into a very ordinary intimate affair between grown, mature consenting adults. All are not cut from the same cloth, and the second group should not be treated the same as the first. I most certainly agree that a teacher should almost never commence a sexual relationship with a student ... much as a psychologist should never have a sexual relationship with a patient ... because of the potential disparity in power, reliance, psychological influence and vulnerability between the parties. I also agree that those married clergy who fall into extra-marital affairs have cause to reflect on their actions in light of their marriage vows and the Precepts on honesty. But the fact of the matter is that Japanese Lineage clergy are not generally celibate, and there will be cases truly between consenting adults with no misuse or important trigger in the power, position or influence of the teacher as teacher or serious moral offense beyond someone breaking their marriage vows. While I see every reason to criticize ... and suspend or punish or defrock ... the real predators and power abusers, I see little reason to treat the same way every case of sexual doings, and let's be careful in distinguishing which is which. I also wag my finger at those folks who profess to have lost their trust in all Zen or Buddhist Teachers because of the missteps of a few. Baloney! A few bad apples do not spoil the whole apple orchard, and the fact is that most ... the vast majority of ... Buddhist Teachers I know are sincere, honest, dedicated, committed folks who generally would not hurt a fly. I also tisk tisk those folks who think that, because a Zen Master shows any failing at all ... from losing his cool from time to time, showing some weakness in personality, having some vice ... that completely disqualifies the teacher from all right and entitlement to teach (let along teach well!). Such a view is typical of the ZEN IDEALISTS AND ROMANTICS out there, looking for perfect Zen teachers without a fault or failing, who think that "Enlightenment" means never making a mistake in the words out of one's mouth, and never having a "bad hair day" again. TIME TO COME DOWN FROM THE CLOUDS! I would say that, if you are looking for a good Zen guide, find a man or woman who sometimes falls down, makes mistakes, makes a donkey's ass of him or herself... and observe closely what happens, watch how he or she does it. Oh, don't get me wrong... probably you do not want as a teacher someone who falls down each and every day, nor someone who falls down too BIG (robbing banks, lying profusely and intentionally starting fires, for example ... nor the few aforesaid predators or serial seducers). No, I mean someone who... every so often, now and then, like everyone... makes a fool of him/herself, loses his Zen Master cool, over-indulges, yields to temptation, does a real face-flop, says something she regrets, breaks some (hopefully not too big) Precepts in some very human way. Observe how does this person recover their balance? With what grace do they fall and, more importantly, get back up on their feet? Do they profoundly reflect on their mistakes, learn from them, apologize sincerely to anyone hurt (hopefully not too badly) ... and move on? As a matter of fact, since this crazy practice is greatly about living with some grace in this imperfect, often disappointing, trap and temptation filled world, a teacher with a couple of serious imperfections may be a good guide on how to avoid, lessen or escape the worst of it! That leads me, finally, to cluck cluck at two corollary misconceptions about Zen Teachers: The first misconception is that Zen Teachers ... Zen Masters ... are ever supposed to be as perfect as a Buddha, beyond all error and mistake, totally one with the universe, always doing what is to be done in every situation, always speaking with a Buddha's tongue, never possibly to trip or fall, at total peace and harmony and wholeness with all this self-life-world, each and all Golden Buddhas and Perfect Jewels. Hockey-pucks! That is the view of some overly idealistic folks who have read too many Lineage Legends and Sutra story books in which our religious heroes and icons ... after being dead and gone ... are dipped in gold and polished up into super-human characters. Sure, as in any religion, we have many TRULY saintly and inspired, enlightened and enlightening folks in our Tradition, living and dead. However, most of the image of "Zen Master" is a bit of religious hype and propaganda. In my view, a "master" is someone with some "mastery" in an art or tradition to practice, pass on and pass down ... from carpentry to medicine to martial arts to Zen Buddhary. It need not mean the "master" is perfect and never errs. One can be a "master carpenter", yet not every corner will always be smooth; a "master surgeon" and lifesaver of thousands, yet sometimes make a bad cut, bungled diagnosis or deadly error. However, one should be pretty darn skilled in applying the art in life, and much more skilled and competent than those without the skills required. As in mastery in the martial arts, there is no technique in Zen for never being hit or never losing one's footing ... let alone for winning every battle ... there is no training offered on how to never fall, but rather, endless training on how to fall well. Show me the man or woman who encounters life's obstacles, sunny and rainy days, loops and losses, ups and downs ... all the mess and mayhem of Samsara ... who may be sometimes knocked sideways or down ... but who demonstrates how to be hit well and recover one's footing ... and I will show you a great Zen teacher. One of the unfortunate aspects of religion is the tendency to put the leader or "guru" on a pedestal as being perfect, beyond any and all human failing ... always wise, never saying the wrong thing, always balanced and in control. The Lineage legends and Sutra story books tend to dip in gold and place on pedestals all our long dead ancestors, scrubbing them of every human failing. I think that unfortunate. Plenty of wannabe cult leaders are ready to play to such an image even now ... and plenty of "need a daddy to tell me what to do" students are ever willing to buy into it. That is a shame. In fact, there are really no "Zen Teachers" ... for Zen cannot be taught. The "Teachers" are more like experienced "Dharma Friends" offering tips and coaching to help the seeker do all the heavy lifting ... and sitting ... and living ... on their own. No, there are no Zen masters who are as perfect as a Buddha, beyond all error and mistake, totally one with the universe, always doing what is to be done in every situation, always speaking with a Buddha's tongue, never possibly to trip or fall, at total peace and harmony and wholeness with all this self-life-world, each and all a Golden Buddha and Perfect Jewel. But that leads to the last misconception: For, in fact, ALL Zen masters (even the predators and abusers!) are as perfect as a Buddha, beyond all error and mistake, totally one with the universe, always doing what is to be done in every situation, always speaking with a Buddha's tongue, never possibly to trip or fall, at total peace and harmony and wholeness with all this self-life-world, each and all Golden Buddhas and Perfect Jewels. TRULY! I KID YOU NOT! Sound like a contradiction? (Zen had lots of those!) You see, so are you ... and all people ... and every mountain and tree and star! Each and All Buddha, Beyond Error and Mistake, totally at one piece and harmony and wholeness with the universe, all preaching with a Buddha's tongue, with no place possibly to fall etc. etc. "Enlightenment" is a realization that there is no place to fall, ultimately no self to stumble, no "mistake" that can ever be made. All things are Perfect Jewels in their way, Whole. That is true. But it is just as true that there is no place to fall, no stumbling or possible mistake... even as we may fall and stumble and make mistakes! The Zen Master should simply realize (know and embody) that fact more than the average bloke ... and hopefully have some skill in helping her students realize such too in their lives.
