We talk to Charlie Gracie - Singer, Guitarist and Rock & Roll Pioneer. Hailing from Philadelphia, Charlie was one of the original multi-million selling recording artists hitting the US number 1 spot in the 1950s and famously knocking Elvis Presley from the top of the charts. His success carried over into the UK and he counts such rock music legends as The Beatles and Graham Nash as fans, with George Harrison in particular stating his incredible guitar style was a massive influence. Charlie toured and became great friends with music icons Chuck Berry, The Everly Brothers, Bo Diddley and the great Eddie Cochran. He continues to record and perform to this day and is truly one of the last of an incredible generation. This episode is brought to you by our friends Dead Skull Coffee.https://deadskullcoffee.co.uk/discount/STVPlease visit The Straight To Video Patreon Page to find out how you can help grow this show. https://www.patreon.com/stvpod

Charlie Gracie is one of a diminishing number of rock & roll innovators. A native of South Philadelphia, he became the first successful recording star of the “Rock Era” to emerge from that neighborhood. In 1957, Charlie's Butterfly topped the American and British music charts, selling over 3 million copies. His other late 50's big sellers include: Fabulous, Ninety-Nine Ways, Wanderin Eyes, I Love You So Much It Hurts and Cool Baby. These hits bankrolled Philly's famous Cameo-Parkway record label. At the height of his fame, Charlie frequently appeared on Dick Clark's American Bandstand, The Ed Sullivan Show, and Alan Freed's TV Specials. He headlined shows at the Brooklyn Paramount, the Casino Royale in Washington, the 500 Club in Atlantic City, the Opera House in Chicago and old Connie Mack Stadium in Philadelphia. Charlie's star burned even brighter in Great Britain where he became the first solo American artist to bring rock & roll to the English concert stage. Preceded only by Bill Haley and the Comets, Charlie headlined London's Palladium and Hippodrome - receiving outstanding receptions from the press and public. Charlie's popularity in the United Kingdom continues to this day where he continues to tour annually. His superb guitar playing elicited the highest of praise from music legends like George Harrison. The late Beatle once referred to Charlie's guitar technique as “brilliant” in a March 1996 interview with Billboard Magazine. Sir Paul McCartney paid tribute to Charlie by recording an updated version of Fabulous on his album Run Devil Run. Pop superstar Sir Cliff Richard followed in 2014 and 2016 by paying tribute to Charlie with updated versions of Fabulous and Butterfly in his Fabulous Rock & Roll Songbook CD series. Belfast Blues performer Van Morrison displayed his admiration for Charlie by inviting him to open a West Coast tour - one of a precious few artists to be given that honor! In 2011, on his 75th birthday, Charlie recorded ‘Baby Doll', a true resurrection for him as it received mass airplay on the BBC as well as Sirius XM in the USA, entering the Mediabase Top 100 and the #1 retail seller position for several weeks in Philadelphia. As the record peaked, he headlined the World Café and played at the Bitter End in NYC. In 2012 Charlie was the subject of a made for PBS-TV documentary: Fabulous! The program recounted the story of his influential career - from humble beginnings in his South Philadelphia row home to concert stages around the world! The year 2015 saw the release of his long-awaited autobiography: ‘ROCK & ROLL's HIDDEN GIANT: THE STORY OF ROCK PIONEER CHARLIE GRACIE' (Alfred Music Publishing). The book received critical acclaim, including a stellar endorsement by Sir Paul McCartney! A member of the Rockabilly Hall of Fame and the Philadelphia Music Hall of Fame, Charlie shows no signs of slowing down. He still plays to packed houses all around the world. Recent show tours have taken him to France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Finland and Great Britain -the site of his greatest success. Though so much has changed around him, much of Charlie's life remains constant. He is a family man, first and foremost. He still reveres the memory of his parents and grandparents, who encouraged him to pursue his love for music . And he considers his fans his family. Talk about close relations! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rick-flynn/support
Even by the 1950s 78s were beginning see their dominance fade in the record market. Vinyl 33s and 45s was here. This though is a celebration of 50s shellac. To start we have the other side of the cracked Hot Lips Page, Randy Hall record from FS54, I tin whistle you. Earl Grant with Hunky dunky doo. Pianist, organist and singer. Sadly he died young at 39 in 1970. Lys Assia, Swiss winner of Euro vision in 1956, sings O Mein Papa. Also Eddy Arnold, Alma Cogan, Charlie Gracie, Fat Domino, Lonnie Donegan and Winifred Atwell. Delighted to have Rose Murphy back, the Chee, Chee Girl. Surely one of the most unusually voices of the 50s. Rose Brennan is back too, singing, as she did for many years, with Joe Loss. I think female singers and artist were really came to the fore in the 50s. Hungarian born Eve Boswell gives us, Where you are. Love the fact that she started in the entertainment world in a family juggling act. Jill Day was hugely popular in this decade with her own TV show. She sings: Give her my love when you see her. Jim Dale, Actor, song writer, director, composer and star of a few Carry on films gives us a perfect piece of 50s pop in Be my girl. In amongst it all is Jack Scott, Canada's greatest Rock and Roll artist. Two belter from him, Leroy and My True Love. Stay safe
Melvin Jerome Blanc, the man of a thousands voices- Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Barney Rubble and Bugs. So many Looney Tunes favourites. Three from Bob Crosby, including a Shakespearian sonnet. Les Compagnions De La Chanson and The Three Bells. Lovely Gallic harmony. A 'B' side, In the Light of the Silvery Moon but what is the big hit on the other side? Nat King Cole and The Four Knights, more Winifred Atwell, Georgia Gibbs, Jean Goldkette and Gary Miller, the singing voice of Troy Tempest in Stingray. A pioneering Rock and Roll star, who last year was touring Britain at the age of 82, Charlie Gracie. Early country and Western Swing from The Hill Billies and Hoosiers Hot Shots. Two songs in Scots. The pre 1st World War, 'We'll hae just Anither.' Its from Hector Gordon, he's a bit of a mystery. More up to date and no mystery Joe Gordon and The Folk Four, A regular in The White Heather Club on TV in the 60s. In amongst all this the magnificent Harry Parry(pictured) and his Radio Rhyhm Sextet, vocals by Doreen Villiers. What a title ' Bounch me, brother, with a solid four.'
