Welcome back everyone. This week, we're going through the recording sessions for Run Devil Run, as well as a but of background on the original songs they were covering. In addition we cover Paul's extensive promotional push behind the album, it's album artwork, and a sprinkling of critical reception! Somehow I've managed to release a 3+ hour episode whilst actively trying to reduce my workload... Please enjoy. So Run Devil Run (1999) is just a simple rock and roll covers album right? The background behind it can't be that complicated, right? WRONG!!! And there you have it, just a taste of the Dirty Poetry yet to come.Stay with me for all the rest of this episode of Dirty Poetry, usingthe word poetry very loosely. Our first story is about a group of oldfriends who have known each other for years and years. They'vetraveled together and had adventures and have been a part of eachothers lives for a long time. They know each other well. They havefor a long time, had a monthly card game. Everything was alwaysfriendly and normal... until tonight... when things got strange.Let's take a listen. That was Heads-Up Poker. Written bySusan Di Placido. Ms Di Placido is a prolific author. She has, todate, published ten novels and one collection of short stories. Herstories almost always involve gambling and card playing and many ofthem are set in Las Vegas. But regardless of the setting, Ms DiPlacido always manages to work in a lot of steamy spicy sex scenes. Her work has been recognized and awarded in the literary world. Hershort story, “I, Candy” won the Spirit Award at the 2005 MoonDance International Film Festival. Her short story collection,American Cool won the bronze medal in the 2008 IPPY Awards and it wasa finalist for the 2008 Indie Book Awards. Her novel Shuffle Up andDeal was nominated for the Romantic Times Reviewer's Choice Award forBest Erotic Fiction in 2010. Susan Di Placido's work has beenpublished in many places. Among them, Maxim Jakubowski's MammothBook Of Best New Erotica in both volume six and volume seven, Zane'sCaramel Flava, Run Devil Run, Slow Trains Literary Review, Rebellion:New Voices Of Fiction, Clean Sheets and Susie Bright's BestAmerican Erotica 2007, which is where we found our story, Heads-UpPoker. Let's take a moment and address theelephant in the room. Okay, one of the elephants in the room. Youmight notice that both of our stories in this episode of Dirty Poetryare written by women, one of them decidedly lesbian, but both storiesare told from the perspective of heterosexual men. This kind ofgender bending perspective shift is, and always has been, commonamong the authors of erotic literature. As readers and listeners, these stories allow us to walk a mile in someone else's panties. And our authors also take an equally joyful turn at that switch. Infact, part of the beauty of both erotic literature and our own eroticimagination is, that in the privacy of our own minds, we can allallow our imaginations, our desires and hungers, to roam freely, toventure into places that we would never allow to happen in our reallives. With all of our real life expressions of sexuality that are sotender, loving, comforting, well... okay, even with the ass slapping, hair pulling excitement that we want in our real life sexuality, still there are places, many places that our imagination goes that wewould never allow to see the light of day. Good writers take us tothese forbidden places and bring us safely back again from theadventures of foreign travel in exotic lands. With our own eroticfantasies encouraged to take wing, our sexual imaginations are nowallowed to travel to places that are unlikely, improbable. Placesthat stretch the boundaries of what sexuality is, and occasionallyeven jump the fence into the impossible. Stories that can arousepossibilities that we would have never imagined. But somehow theybecome real for us for just a few brilliant moments in the privacy ofour own minds. It is there, in the privacy of our imagination that wecan begin to discover our own most primal sexual arousals. It isgreat writers with their wild tales, with their exotic erotic...

In this episode we welcome the legendary Pete Wingfield to Hammersmith to discuss his career as a keyboard player, record producer and music journalist. We start by asking Pete about Soulbeat, the fanzine he started at Wellington College, and about the network of R&B fans in mid-'60s Britain. From there we learn about Mike Vernon's Blue Horizon label (and Chipping Norton studio); about Pete's 1967 trip to America, where he met Otis Redding at Stax studios; and about the Breakfast Special album that produced his big 1975 hit 'Eighteen with a Bullet'. Fast-forwarding to 1981, Pete tells Barney, Mark & Jasper about Sylvia Robinson, the Sugarhill Gang, and cutting Mel Brooks' rap hit 'It's Good to be the King' in a basement studio in Mortlake — the same place where he produced Dexys Midnight Runners' No. 1 hit 'Geno'. A brief discussion of Dexys and Searching for the Young Soul Rebels leads into recollections of touring with the reunited Everly Brothers, producing the Proclaimers' '500 Miles' and playing on Paul McCartney's 1999 covers album Run Devil Run. Clips from Cliff White's 1980 audio interview with New Orleans great Lee Dorsey provide the perfect excuse to express our abiding love of Lee and of Allen Toussaint's Crescent City soul sound. Staying in a southern vein, we mark the passing of country-soul king Joe Simon, who died in December. We also bid a sad farewell to beloved Radio 1 deejay Janice Long. Mark talks us out with quotes from pieces about Kathy Kirby, Van Dyke Parks, Prince's Controversy and Shelby Lynne, while Jasper brings us up to date with his thoughts on Taku Sugimoto, Wolf Alice and Sampa the Great. Charlie Gracie is one of a diminishing number of rock & roll innovators. A native of South Philadelphia, he became the first successful recording star of the “Rock Era” to emerge from that neighborhood. In 1957, Charlie's Butterfly topped the American and British music charts, selling over 3 million copies. His other late 50's big sellers include: Fabulous, Ninety-Nine Ways, Wanderin Eyes, I Love You So Much It Hurts and Cool Baby. These hits bankrolled Philly's famous Cameo-Parkway record label. At the height of his fame, Charlie frequently appeared on Dick Clark's American Bandstand, The Ed Sullivan Show, and Alan Freed's TV Specials. He headlined shows at the Brooklyn Paramount, the Casino Royale in Washington, the 500 Club in Atlantic City, the Opera House in Chicago and old Connie Mack Stadium in Philadelphia. Charlie's star burned even brighter in Great Britain where he became the first solo American artist to bring rock & roll to the English concert stage. Preceded only by Bill Haley and the Comets, Charlie headlined London's Palladium and Hippodrome - receiving outstanding receptions from the press and public. Charlie's popularity in the United Kingdom continues to this day where he continues to tour annually. His superb guitar playing elicited the highest of praise from music legends like George Harrison. The late Beatle once referred to Charlie's guitar technique as “brilliant” in a March 1996 interview with Billboard Magazine. Sir Paul McCartney paid tribute to Charlie by recording an updated version of Fabulous on his album Run Devil Run. Pop superstar Sir Cliff Richard followed in 2014 and 2016 by paying tribute to Charlie with updated versions of Fabulous and Butterfly in his Fabulous Rock & Roll Songbook CD series. Belfast Blues performer Van Morrison displayed his admiration for Charlie by inviting him to open a West Coast tour - one of a precious few artists to be given that honor! In 2011, on his 75th birthday, Charlie recorded ‘Baby Doll', a true resurrection for him as it received mass airplay on the BBC as well as Sirius XM in the USA, entering the Mediabase Top 100 and the #1 retail seller position for several weeks in Philadelphia. As the record peaked, he headlined the World Café and played at the Bitter End in NYC. In 2012 Charlie was the subject of a made for PBS-TV documentary: Fabulous! The program recounted the story of his influential career - from humble beginnings in his South Philadelphia row home to concert stages around the world! The year 2015 saw the release of his long-awaited autobiography: ‘ROCK & ROLL's HIDDEN GIANT: THE STORY OF ROCK PIONEER CHARLIE GRACIE' (Alfred Music Publishing). The book received critical acclaim, including a stellar endorsement by Sir Paul McCartney! A member of the Rockabilly Hall of Fame and the Philadelphia Music Hall of Fame, Charlie shows no signs of slowing down. He still plays to packed houses all around the world. Recent show tours have taken him to France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Finland and Great Britain -the site of his greatest success. Though so much has changed around him, much of Charlie's life remains constant. He is a family man, first and foremost. He still reveres the memory of his parents and grandparents, who encouraged him to pursue his love for music . And he considers his fans his family. Quick and short this week folks!  Tom & Andy continue a film/DVD review from the McCartney series.  This week it's Live At The Cavern Club released in 2001 but originally premiered live in December of 1999 on Direct TV.   As we point out this period represents a small but memorable time in McCartney's career.  His first official performance back at the Cavern since the final Beatles performance on 3 August 1963.   Andy gives an overview of the current Cavern Club and his experiences at the venue during his time in Liverpool and how the current club is laid out compared to the original on Mathew Street.   The DVD itself runs short. Choba B CCCP Vs. Run Devil Run! Episode 124 of 2Legs features an interesting conversation that we had with Mr. David "Ghosty" Wills, DJ at WFDU 89.1. David's show "Vintage Rock and Pop Show" features a playlist of music from 1945-75. He is well versed in the 1950s music that Paul chose to cover on both of these albums. Tom, Andy and Dave discuss the bands Paul assembled for both albums, why they were recorded, where McCartney was at professionally and personally at the time as well as subsequent releases and promotional activities for both. We also consider should Lennon's 1973 "Rock and Roll" be compared to either of these. Which cover album do you prefer? Choba or Run Devil Run. David's Show: https://tinyurl.com/yvswrc5y

There is a battle raging. We see the evidence all around us in the broken lives, news stories, and pain in this world. We also see it in amazing comebacks, in restore relationships, shattered addictions, and the life that is found in Christ. This battle climaxed on a cross outside of Jerusalem centuries ago. It looked like hope was lost. It appeared that evil had won. Then the comeback began. The unexpected and unimaginable happened. Jesus rose from the dead. The resurrection of Jesus was God's crushing blow against evil. It means victory for all who trust in Him. Jesus has won back every inch of the Devil's conquest. The only territory yet to be God's is the heart that has yet to yield to Jesus.

Ian Paice was born on June 29, 1948, in Nottingham, England. Ian got his first drum kit by age of 15. Ian neither had any formal education in music. He learned to play drums by trying to imitate what he heard from drummers playing on the radio. Paice greatly admired drumming styles of jazz legends like Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich, and always dreamt of emulating them. He practiced hard on drums, especially noting that being left handed, he needed to come of with techniques which would fit the right handed drum kits. Though Paice was playing for his father’s Dance band in the early 60s, the first professional band he played with was "Georgie and the Rave ons", a local group in Becester, which later came to be known as "The Shindigs". After a short stint with this group, Paice left it to join another group called M15, which became The Maze. Soon after, Paice left and helped form Deep Purple with Rod Evans, Jon Lord, Nick Simper and Ritchie Blackmore in 1968. Deep Purple would later be one of the biggest rock bands in the world, especially during the 60s and the 70s. They would soon start dominating the charts with such hit albums like Deep Purple in Rock, Fireball, Machine Head and Who Do We Think We Are, Come Taste The Band, Stormbringer and Burn. Paice's drumming techniques have been showcased in many of their hit songs but the best example are 'Made in Japan' "The Mule" , "Child In Time", "Flight of the Rat" and the album 'Machine Head'.Paice was called for studio recording by a number of artists who included Peter York, Elf, Green Bullfrog, Velvet Underground, Baby Face, Eddie Harris, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, William Shatner, Jim Capaldi and many others. From 1979 to 1982, Paice worked with Whitesnake and released 3 albums. In 1982 he also played with Gary Moore Band. After 2 years of playing with Gary Moore, he got back to Deep Purple. In 1999, Ian made a guest appearance in Paul McCartney’s Run Devil Run. Paice released a solo DVD and continues his world clinic instruction. Paice is also in the Drummers’ Hall of Fame and just inducted in the Rock Roll HOF class of 2016! Deep Purple continues to tour worldwide and remains at the top of rock roll’s Elite Bands.

More Than a Song - Discovering the Truth of Scripture Hidden in Today's Popular Christian Music

I'm sick and tired of being a prisoner of war. I'm ready to send my enemy running for the hills, aren't you? Crowder, in his new song "Run Devil Run," inspired me to create a strategy against the devil. It's all laid out for us in Scripture. It's time to get serious about our strategy against a very real enemy. Are you ready? On this episode I discuss: Story behind the song "Run Devil Run" - YouTube Video The enemy has a strategy - Ephesians 6:11 The main weapon of the devil is the LIE Department of Defense Strategy for Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Our formidable foe - Ephesians 6:12 Our strategy to fight the enemy Prepare Prevent acquisition Contain and reduce threats Respond to crises Taking a B.I.T.E. out of Scripture - our Bible Interaction Tool Exercises this week are: Slow down Read in various translations Repetition We are soldiers of Christ - see Episode 104 Studying a previous battle plan of the enemy - Genesis 3 The Lie: Destruction of Relationship - a video resource by my mentor How our strategy must include others - Ephesians 6:18 How we must be flexible and maintain robust situational awareness - Ephesians 6:18   Additional Resources Lyrics This Week's Challenge Be a good soldier this week. Spend some time preparing by studying a common battle plan of the enemy in Genesis 3. Prevent acquisition by filling your heart and mind with the truth of God's Word on a consistent basis. Contain and reduce threats by daily (even many times a day) putting on and securing the armor of God found in Ephesians 6. Respond to crises with flexibility, maintaining situational awareness and working with fellow believers. Don't hide. Don't blame. Know truth. Don't give up.
