Christopher Cook was appointed in 2022 as the Chief of Police for the City of White Settlement, Texas, a suburb of 21,000 residents in Western Tarrant County and nestled in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Area, the 5th largest in the U.S., with almost 7 million residents. Prior to that, he served as a Deputy Police Chief for the Arlington, Texas Police Department. White Settlement, known as the gateway to national defense, is home to major defense industries, including Lockheed Martin and the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base-Fort Worth. The White Settlement Police Department, one of only 186 agencies across Texas out of 2,700, is accredited by the Law Enforcement Agency Best Practices Accreditation Program, the gold standard for recognition, through the Texas Police Chief's Association. The department, nationally recognized with awards, is a full-service law enforcement agency with 53 team members. In May 2024, Christopher became a published author with The Art of Strategic Communication, a Police Chief's Guide to Mastering Soundbites, Storytelling, and Community Engagement. Outgoing Minerals Council South Africa's Roger Baxter told the Junior Indaba's opening day that the CEO of a junior mining company is typically a chief cook and bottlewasher – and Botswana Diamonds MD James Campbell was quick to confirm that. “I've been chief cook and bottlewasher for the past 20 years almost, and I'm now running my fourth junior,” said Campbell. (Also watch attached Creamer Media video.) “I'm typically the only diamond geezer here and what is quite sad is that according to my records, Botswana Diamonds is the only active listed diamond junior in the sub-continent, in the region, and we hope that, over the passage of time, this will improve,” added Campbell in acknowledging indaba chairperson Bernard Swanepoel and indaba organiser Paula Munsie, the CEO of Resources4Africa, for continuing to spotlight junior mining in South Africa. On juniors typically wanting to discover something and then be bought out by a mining major, Campbell gave the discover-and-sell strategy the thumbs down: “I think that's the wrong mindset," said Campbell during his presentation covered by Mining Weekly. “You've got to discover something with the mindset of mining it and delivering capital gains by being a diamond producer. We focus on geology and without good geology, you can't do anything,” he added. In South Africa, Botswana Diamonds is focused on production at Marsfontein and Thorny River, in Limpopo province, and in Botswana, it is dual listed with the London Stock Exchange. In Zimbabwe, it has three joint ventures, but sadly diamond companies cannot operate there unless linked with one four companies there and joint ventures are not encouraged. “But it's highly prospective from a geological perspective, so we'd like to be there one day, and I'd certainly like to build a diamond mine in Zimbabwe before I hang up my geological boots,” Campbell commented. Botswana Diamonds plc is funded by investors out of the UK and Ireland who typically have a high-risk mindset. It has no offices and during Covid, it got by with £384 000 for the year, which included auditing compliance, legal fees and field work. “We're very, very miserly with our money, because it is our money,” said Campbell, who reports that very little diamond exploration is taking place. The older mines are getting deeper and more costly, which means that diamonds prices will rise amid demand for diamonds continuing to rise. “Of course, we have black swan events, like the global financial crisis, Covid and the war in Ukraine, but these tend to be transitory and we carry on with the longer term trend,” he outlined. Displaying a slide showing pictures of production at Marsfontein and Thorny River, Campbell applauded South Africa's Department of Mineral Resources and Energy. “There's very little comparable legislation for a mining permit in other jurisdictions which allow juniors, such as ourselves and others, to get by with the minimal amount of bureaucracy and into production. “In fact, we were in production on this property within three months of actually setting up,” he said, showing an image of his hand holding diamonds. SHARE PRICE IS EVERYTHING Campbell emphasised that the share price of junior resource companies “is everything”, with market capitalisation meaning very little – “size is nothing”. The company arranged a deal with a royalty miner where it does the technical and compliance work and the royalty miner provides all the capital and the operating cost. This has minimal financial impact on shareholders, with the cash being generated for Botswana Diamonds. “It's not saying that we're going to do every project like that, but when you're mining dumps and alluvial deposits, where the resource risk is high, it makes sense to do it this way,” Campbell explained.

“There are only so many A-players out there and we're doing what we feel is right for the people we work with… the more of those you have around you, the more successful you will be.” Frank Bonanno, Chief Cook and Bottle Washer, Bonanno Concepts I reached out to Frank Bonanno after I read that his Bonanno Concepts restaurants and bars (10 in total) had instituted a policy which requires all employees to be vaccinated and all guests to prove their positive vaccination status before being able to enter a Bonanno Concepts business. Frank graciously agreed to talk about that – and as you'll hear in this longer than usual episode, the conversation went much deeper about creating a work environment that has led to 100% employment in a hospitality arena where others are struggling to maintain staffing levels. Fascinating insights. They can easily be mimicked – are they? Not by many. Will they? You decide how likely that is.
As we approach the 20th anniversary of the 9-11-01 terrorist attacks, this month marks another milestone involving Indiana Task Force 1, which was among 28 elite rescue teams dispatched to Ground Zero in New York City to search for survivors. Thirty years ago, in July 1991, Indiana Task Force 1 - which includes firefighters, emergency medical technicians, engineers, search-dog handlers and other highly trained specialists - was being formed to respond to catastrophic events. Hoosier History Live will explore the aftermath of the attack on the Twin Towers in New York City, when 62 professional rescuers from Indiana and their support crew arrived at the still-smoldering ruins. Some of the Indiana Task Force 1 members were among the first "boots on the ground" from across the country at Ground Zero after the suicide hijackings of airplanes that crashed into the World Trade Center's 110-story towers. To explore what unfolded - as well as earlier and subsequent missions of the Indiana responders since the formation of the task force - Nelson will be joined by two guests: Tom Spalding, who was the public safety reporter for The Indianapolis Star when he accompanied the Indiana task force to Ground Zero for an "up-close and personal" look at their overwhelming mission. Tom, who left the Star in 2011 to become a public relations manager, is working on a book that will include a chapter about Indiana Task Force 1's search efforts. And Dave Cook, a battalion chief for the Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD), who served a critical function with Indiana Task Force 1 at Ground Zero because of his expertise as a structural specialist. A Ball State University-educated architect as well as a firefighter, Chief Cook was a captain with the Washington Township Fire Department (before its merger with IFD) in September 2001. He joined the Indiana task force in 1995 and continues to be part of the professional rescue team. At Ground Zero, some of the Indiana Task Force 1 members arrived amid still-smoldering underground fires. Several of the Hoosiers barely escaped being "burned alive" when a 50-foot wall of fire shot up during an underground search for survivors, our guest Tom Spalding wrote in a subsequent account for Traces of Indiana and Midwestern History, the Indiana Historical Society's magazine. When the Indiana Task Force 1 rescuers returned to Indianapolis after their 10-day assignment at Ground Zero, they were greeted by a cheering crowd of 3,000 on Monument Circle. In downtown Indianapolis, a permanent memorial to the 9-11 victims was dedicated after the 10th anniversary of the tragedy. Earlier that month, Tom Spalding was one of the guests on Hoosier History Live for a show marking that milestone. Since then, Tom has visited the National September 11 Memorial and Museum on the former site of the World Trade Center. In addition to Indianapolis-based firefighters and emergency medical technicians, the Indiana Task Force 1 team members dispatched to Ground Zero included search dog handlers from South Bend, Fountaintown, Newburgh and Lebanon. The beginnings of Indiana Task Force 1 can be traced to July 1991, a deadline posed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for teams across the country to submit applications to be part of the emergency response system. During their mission in the aftermath of the 9-11 tragedy in New York, the Hoosier rescuers, along with Tom Spalding and other Indiana-based journalists, stayed in tents at the Javits Convention Center. During our show, we will explore concerns about subsequent health problems experienced by some of the Hoosier rescuers. In sifting through the Ground Zero debris, they were exposed to fuel from the jets that struck the Twin Towers and other potentially toxic material. "In the subsequent year, I thought the [Hoosier] task force members would become celebrities, but they did not," Tom wrote in his Traces account. "They simply returned to the old jobs they had left." Last week, about 80 members of Indiana Task Force 1 traveled to Surfside, Fla., to help with search and rescue efforts after the collapse of a condominium building. Although our guest Chief Cook is not among those deployed to the site of the tragedy in Florida, he has served as a structural specialist on more than 20 missions since he joined Indiana Task Force 1 in the 1990s. He is among only a few members who have been on the team since its earliest years.

You shouldn’t have to do everything and now you don’t. Running a business is an exhausting task. There is so much you have to do when you’re the Chief Cook and Bottle Washer. There are bound to be things that fall through the cracks. When you’ve got a chronic challenge, it makes it all that much more difficult. So what do you do? First, you need to understand that you don’t always have the same levels of energy and making sure your body is at it’s best is important. How do you do that? A tip for starting on this journey is to actually see what you do with your energy and see how you feel doing it. Then you can sort of match what takes the most energy. For me, I know I'm, I could get up and go from five o'clock in the morning, until about one o'clock in the afternoon. And then I'm toast, and there's nothing I can do that's gonna be worthy of letting anybody else see, you know, from like, one to four, and I'll take a nap or I'll sit back and watch some television and I'll do some, then about four o'clock, I've got some more energy and I can work again for another couple of hours. But if I try to push through from that one to four, and there are times like today I have to do that. My brain gets foggy. I go, I'm not remembering this. I'm not using the right words. And so I've learned to try if there's something that's very important to do it early in the morning. We will spend the next half hour or so talking with Keziah Robinson about all things energy and how to maintain ours while keeping up with our business success. Take a listen! In addition to running her firm, She has climbed Kilimanjo, Aconagua, Cho oyo and Everest all while crushing it in business and life. What I first noticed when I first started chatting with Christina is how humble she is. Episode 125 - a conversation with Peter Gammons. As a Boston Red Sox fan living in the NY/NJ area back in the 90’s and early 2000’s, life as a Sox fan was...well...difficult. Especially after Game 7 of the ALCS when the New York Yankees walked off the Sox in 2003. But that was just the beginning of a Red Sox renaissance that eventually brought the city of Boston 4 World Series Trophies since - including the recent 2018 championship. With 11 championships since 2001 – Boston fans really have nothing to complain about when it comes to sports. But during that painful time of losing before all the winning, there were a few people we turned to for our Red Sox fix. Peter Gammons was number one on that list. So what is a world class sportswriter and analyst doing on a music podcast? Peter is also a songwriter and guitarist and has played with the likes of Eddie Vedder, Will Dailey, Buffalo Tom and many others. He also started Hot Stove, Cool Music – which is the signature fundraiser for The Foundation To Be Named Later started by Paul and Theo Epstein. But Peter is much more than just a sportswriter and musician, he is also a humanitarian who works hard for the kids in the city of Boston. We spoke with Peter at his scholarship dinner for the Peter Gammons College Scholarship in Boston and got to talk with Chief Cook and Bottle Washer, CEO and Executive Director of The Foundation to Be Named Later Allyce Najimy, Scholar Program Manager Lesly Suriel, the Foundation's founder Paul Epstein and Boston musician Will Dailey. Contractor Success Map with Randal DeHart | Contractor Bookkeeping And Accounting Services
This Podcast Is Episode Number 0217, And It Will Be About Untrained Bookkeepers Are Too Costly Construction Bookkeepers Without Training Is A Common Problem Many Construction Bookkeepers start out as Admin Assistants and get promoted to doing the Contractor's Bookkeeping in their free time. They were not hired to be a bookkeeper but as an office person who does a little data entry. This method not too bad if the employee stays a long time and grows with the company from owner working solo to gradually adding a few employees one at a time because as Randal says: Growing By The Inch Is A Cinch; Growing By The Yard Is Hard! The Term Is Commonly Known As “Grow Your Own.” This trusted employee ends up learning: How To Do Payroll For Construction Contractors How To Do Quarterly Payroll Reports For A Construction Company How To Do W-2’s For Construction Company Field And Office Workers How To Do annual 1099’s For Construction Company Subcontractors How To create Customer Invoices For Construction Contractor's Clients How To Call The Contractor's Customer And Ask For The Payment How To Choose What Are The Most Critical Bills To Pay. (Nasty Phones Calls Are The First To Be Paid!) Over the course of time, the in-house Contractor's bookkeeper / office manager develops new skills. They keep adding them as each new crisis occurs. Every day someone calls upset, dazed and confused spouses, girlfriends and overwhelmed Contractor's Bookkeepers asking for me to “Please Help – I am so overloaded and frustrated because QuickBooks is a Mess!!" I recently spoke with someone who wanted to make a few improvements to their business. The company had over 20 employees, and their in-house Bookkeeper was creating payroll Weekly from paper time cards. (which most of the time arrived late). It was Normal for their Bookkeeper to spend hours just trying to read the scribble and make sense of the time cards. The Contractor's Bookkeeper had the added challenge of matching up the hours to the jobs for proper job costing. A frustrating nightmare for the bookkeeper. All of this means The Contractor has been successful in growing the business. This is very good. The bad news is that the in-house Bookkeeper is overloaded and a lot of your profit and hard earned money is going to fall through the cracks. As The Contractor, You Are Paying The Price In The Form Of: Fines Penalties Late Fees Unbilled Change Orders Unsent Invoices Bounced Checks Lost Bidding Opportunities Little Leaks Sink The Big Ship Several Ways You Can Improve In-House Bookkeeper's Life And Grow Your Profits And Your Cash Flow Upgrade Computer to a new and faster box Get new monitors that are larger and with better resolutions Add a second or third monitor for more productivity Upgrade the office chair the in-house Bookkeeper uses Double check the phone – is a new phone needed Would a wireless headset be helpful? Any Investment That Saves Ten Minutes A Day Of Waste Will Pay For Itself And Pay You Ongoing Dividends Ten Minutes Waste Kills Your Construction Company Profits Profit Drain #1 In-House Bookkeeper Until Your Construction Company - Reaches at least $5 million in annual sales you cannot afford to hire a qualified bookkeeper or construction accountant. For Example - You Hire someone with bad habits which is a Cheap Bookkeeper part-time at $15.00 an hour for 10 hours a week thinking you will save money. The problem with that is you may not understand the true cost to have them on your payroll, including overhead, is closer to $25.29 per hour. See the chart below: Every Ten Minutes Your Bookkeeper Is Costing You $4.21 And Could Cost Your Company $273.93 Every Year At 10% Profit, You Need $2,739.30 More Sales To Maintain Profit Margin In Some Cases - We can do more work for less money by providing you with real construction bookkeeping and accounting + payroll processing + monthly and quarterly tax reports + year end W-2, W-3 + profit and growth management consulting + financial and job costing reports + paperless data storage and more at a lower overall cost and as an added bonus show you how to make more money than you are now! Cheap Tools And Equipment - Cost a lot of money that you cannot see; out-of-sight means out-of-mind. Invest in the best tools and equipment you can afford because in the short run you will save money. Construction workers who take pride in their work produce better results faster with fewer repairs if they have quality tools and equipment. Make More Money Faster - With productivity gains. See the chart below: For Employee #01 Could Cost The Company $1,544.42 Each Year At 10% Profit, You Need $15,544.20 More Sales To Maintain Profit Margin For Example - Your best construction worker asks for a tool: It costs $1,200.00 It will save ten minutes a day in labor It will last 3 years The standard response is the company can't afford it! Highly Profitable - Construction company owners ask their construction accountant to calculate the projected the Return on Investment (ROI) is and then consult their Strategic Business Plan to make an informed decision. In This Example - It may make sense to finance the purchase even if it means using a credit card at 12% interest because the net return is $3,289.36 which is 245% ROI. See below: Two Contractors Doing Similar Work - For similar customers with the similar direct and indirect construction costs will have massively different KPI Reports including the Profit and Loss Statements. Size matters when it comes to piles of money and bigger profits! Before Computers – I Spent Hours Testing Adding Machines A comfortable easy to use set of keys meant I could work faster. By Touch, how did the keys feels, how stiff was the keys. How LOUD, could I use it and still answer the phone? How durable was the adding machine? Just as the Right Tool is important to you and your Field Employees. The Right Tools in the office has made the work of the In-House Bookkeeper easier. The in-house Bookkeeper is a key player in your organization. Everything in the office this them is their “Tools and Equipment.” Do you know what 10 minutes are costing you? Can that same 10 minutes be used for something more important? Think of all the tasks you are having your in-house bookkeeper doing. Now how many of them can or should be done by someone else? In the beginning, there was no one else but you and your Office Assistant. The Office Assistant slowly evolved into being the in-house Bookkeeper. Before your know it the title Office Assistant no longer applies. Now the proper title would be Office Manager and be the in-house Bookkeeper as time permits. In several blogs, I have quoted saying of my Father and my Brother. Here are some of my Mother’s favorites. When being overloaded with “Things To Do” is really being “The Chief Cook and Bottle Washer” who is willing to pitch in (or by necessity) wherever and whenever a person is needed. The phrase “Is That My Job Description” never applies to this person. Another one of my Mother’s sayings was in relationship to housework when there was a “shortage of time.” She would say we are going to give the living room “A Lick and A Promise.” Meaning we were going to give it a quick dusting, vacuum the center of the room, straighten the nick knacks, fluff the pillows on each end of the sofa. The unspoken was that next time the living room would be vacuumed “Edge To Edge.” The sofa, chairs, tables would be moved and vacuumed under; baseboard would be wiped down. Windows would be washed; drapes would be air fluffed. Feels a bit like spring cleaning. I find reviewing QuickBooks files that many in-house Bookkeepers are giving the bookkeeping “A Lick and A Promise” Shortcuts are taken. Everything is entered into the checking account. Bank accounts are not reconciled. Credit cards, tax payments are all entered into Accounts Payable, so they will not be forgotten. The time or the willingness to “Go Back” and catch or fix the Bookkeeping never happens. My first question is what are the things that someone else can be doing? Would adding an assistant be helpful? Can someone else go get the mail, open the mail, tidy up the office, make the coffee, take out the trash? Would adding a shop person be helpful? Can someone else lift heavy things? (case of paper) Can someone else move that thing? (desk, cabinet Can someone else hang that picture, change the light bulb? My next question is how can payroll be streamlined? Should payroll be Outsourced to a Payroll Service? My suggestion for Outsourcing Payroll is almost always YES! Why - The short answer is: It will free up your in-house Bookkeeper’s time. Next reason is as payroll becomes more complicated as you add more employees a payroll service is on top of the rules. (Washington State added, “Personal Time Off” for 2018. “Personal Time Off” is in effect inside City of Seattle effective in 2017 for employers just passing through (deliver drives, etc.) Still, want to keep the payroll in-house. Add Electronic Time Card. We recommend T-Sheets. T-Sheets if setup properly will sync with QuickBooks Desktop In The Cloud (not all 3rd party programs do this nicely) This will save hours of time trying to read employee’s scribble. I recommend T-Sheets for contractors like you to track your own time. How many times has a project been Time & Material Billings? Now, where are the notes on the job? How much time was spent on the job? Who spent time on the job? With T-Sheets built-in database, it is easy to pull reports based on per employee, by time, or by the job. Having good records is helpful in an audit. Having good payroll records may help preserve your lien rights on a job. Having good records is helpful in billing the customer. Having an electronic timecard with GPS can help keep track of your employees. (Are they working or fishing?) There is no shortage of tasks for the Office Manager | In-House Bookkeeper When you ask for financial reports, the word “Overload” comes to mind. When you ask for job costing reports the “Glazed Look” comes to mind. When you ask for 10 more things to be done “Muttering Under Breath” happens. Understand as The Contractor the person who has the most invested in your business is you. The additional energy to “Get The Job Done” is yours because the company is yours. It is by exception that the most dedicated employee will have the same intensity as you do about your business. Why – because they can clock out and go home. It is you who has to Worry, Wait and Hustle! And sometimes – if you don’t pick up and step up to get the balance of what needs to be done. It won’t get done. We are here to help. We do not try to do it all. Every year we make improvements to our business. Why – To help us help you. I am not excited to pay server fees, but I like the benefit of our Contractor clients and us having 24/7 access to the QuickBooks file if I need it. Technology is everywhere. Email is nicer that faxing documents everywhere. I have on occasion emailed a client late at night or early morning to be sure they know something before their day starts. I am very much a phone person, but I would never call or answer the phone during those same odd hours. The group meet Chief Cook'n Bottlewasher who really liked Crazy Quilt's colorful skin. The Chief wants to take Crazy Quilt's skin but Judy talks him into taking her mirror. When they reach the Golden Grove, Wintergreen Witch appears, demanding the broken star. Without the mirror, Jimmy is forced to give the witch the pieces.
I'm the Chief Cook and Bottle Washer at Buddha at the Gas Pump. Richard Miller hosts a similar interview show called Never Not Here. Somehow we connected and he asked to interview me, not necessarily as an awakened being or teacher, but as a fellow spiritual aspirant. In the summer of 1967, when I was 17 years old, I was driving through Westport, CT with three friends in the car. One of them in the back seat was reading from a commentary on the Tibetan Book of the Dead by Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert (Ram Dass). A quiet but memorable realization dawned in me that there was such a thing as "enlightenment" and that realizing it was life's ultimate goal. I rather recklessly explored that possibility through drugs for a year, then saw the futility of that approach and learned Transcendental Meditation. I taught TM for 25 years and still meditate regularly, but am not affiliated with any particular spiritual organization. I respect any of them which seem to offer genuine benefits to their participants. Interview recorded 6/5/2010.
