Justin Kolbeck is co-founder and CEO of cultivated salmon producer Wildtype with longtime friend Aryé Elfenbein, currently on a mission to create the cleanest, most sustainable seafood on the planet. Inspired by breakthroughs in stem cell research, and witnessing firsthand the impact of global food insecurity in places such as Pakistan and Afghanistan, these old friends brought their experiences together to reimagine the future of seafood starting with creating sushi grade salmon from Coho Salmon cells. Wildtype has recently raised over $100 million in Series B funding to make its product ubiquitous, from top restaurants to grocery stores. Prior to Wildtype, Justin spent nearly five years as a consultant at Strategy& helping companies develop and launch products, grow into new markets, and operate efficiently. He started his career as a Foreign Service Officer, serving in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Australia, and Washington DC. He is a graduate of the Yale School of Management, L'Institut d'Études Politiques de Paris, and UC Berkeley. Heidi Tait has always been an avid lover of nature and the outdoors, so when she was working as a scuba instructor and started finding rubbish everywhere, her only option was to act. In 2004 Heidi founded Tangaroa Blue Foundation (TBF) as a way of addressing the ever-increasing threat of marine debris in our oceans. Through the TBF Heidi introduced the Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI), which is a growing network of communities, schools, industries, government agencies and individuals focused on reducing the amount of marine debris washing into our oceans. Heidi was named one of the “18 Most Influential Women in Ocean Conservation” in the July 2018 edition of Ocean Geographic and has been featured in multiple interviews as one of Australia's foremost Ocean Innovators. In this compelling conversation, Rich and Heidi cover many important topics, starting with the big picture of why there is so much marine debris and where it is all coming from. They then focus on solutions – specifically how Heidi and her partners are utilizing their network and data system to not only remove garbage from the ocean, but also to stop it at the source. Additionally they cover many other subjects from recycling to cigarette butts to her connection to Jack Johnson. Heidi is a true ocean hero out there every day working to protect the ocean we all love so much! Dr. Sylvia Earle is the founding President and Chairman of Mission Blue. She is a National Geographic Society Explorer in Residence and was dubbed Her Deepness by the New Yorker and New York Times. The Library of Congress made her a Living Legend and Time Magazine declared her the first Hero for the Planet. She was also the first female Chief Scientist of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (the NOAA). She is an Ocean Elder, an oceanographer, explorer, author and lecturer. In short Dr. Earle is a living legend. Over the years Dr. Earle has brought her infinite wisdom and deep knowledge of how our planets works to both the professional world and the masses in books, films, numerous talks, lectures and interviews but one in particular stands out, from ten years ago, with the NRDC (the national resources defense council), where she said “Think of the Ocean as the blue Heart of the planet. The part that makes the world work. Drives climate and weather. Generates most of the oxygen we breathe. It drives our water cycle. It's where 97% of the water is. This is our life support system and unless we really understand it and appreciate it, we are not going to take care of it. Knowing is the key”. At just 19 years of age, Daniela Fernandez found herself sitting in a United Nations chamber listening to a myriad of scary statistics regarding the likely fate of our ocean planet. Two things quickly became apparent to her. First, she noticed she was the ONLY young voice in the room, the only young person in the conversation. Second, while there was a great deal of fear being projected, there was very little talk in terms of hope, inspirational dialogue or innovative solutions. So as legend goes, she decided to start the Sustainable Ocean Alliance from her Georgetown University dorm room, which in only 6 short years has become the largest network of young Ocean Leaders in the world with more than 5,000 participants in over 165 countries. She is now CEO. Daniela has been recognized for her work by former US Sec'y of State and current US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, John Kerry and former US President Bill Clinton. Oceana was launched by five ocean-conservation philanthropies, including Pew Charitable Trusts, Marisla and the Oak Foundation of Geneva and is still primarily funded by such groups. In 2002, Oceana merged with the American Oceans Campaign, founded by actor and environmentalist Ted Danson, to more effectively address a common mission of protecting and restoring the world's oceans. Based in Washington, D.C., Oceana and its global supporters, believes the world's oceans “are in crisis from overfishing, acidification, and habitat destruction [and] works internationally to alleviate these and other problems through policy-oriented campaigns.” Under his leadership, Oceana and its allies have protected nearly 4 million square miles of habitat and won more than 250 significant policy victories. Oceana campaigns have banned bottom trawling and offshore oil exploration in Belize, helping to protect the world's second-largest barrier reef system. Other victories have preserved unique habitats in Chile, made the seafood trade more transparent, and helped combat illegal fishing around the globe. Sharpless also led Oceana through the development and launch of Global Fishing Watch, an online platform that offers the first free global view of commercial fishing, in partnership with SkyTruth and Google. Sharpless holds degrees from Harvard Law School, the London School of Economics, and Harvard College. He previously served in leadership roles at Discovery.com, RealNetworks, and the Museum of Television & Radio in New York City sits on multiple boards and has authored several books. Blue Latitudes as a marine environmental consulting company with a non profit foundation understands the often-complex environmental issues that face the offshore energy industry and has developed relationships with both federal and state regulatory agencies that are based on a shared goal to manage offshore resources in a way that is both environmentally sustainable and fiscally responsible. Some of the Earth's greatest opportunities for conservation lie at the intersection of industry and the environment. The dynamic duo at the helm of this planet forward operation, marine scientist Amber Sparks and environmental scientist Emily Hazelwood, (both made the Forbes 30 under 30 list in the energy sector and met at Scripps Institute of Oceanography), have seen the human demand for ocean resources increase incrementally, and have laid solid plans to broaden the dialog on traditional ocean conservation practices to find ways to use our oceans without using them up! Their credo is profound; to elevate the traditional concept of ocean stewardship by uniting government, industry and the community to work together to conserve our oceans! In doing so, their foundation and consulting business, strives to explore innovative solutions to traditional marine conservation challenges, by uniting science, policy, and communications to develop sustainable, creative and cost-effective solutions to manage the environmental issues that surround the offshore energy industry. Today, they work with government and industry around the world to develop RtR strategies and, using remotely operated vehicles, literally diving into the deepest depths of the ocean to evaluate the marine ecosystems found on deep offshore energy structures. Madison Stewart, a.k.a. Shark Girl, also known to her close friends as “Pip or Pippy” (dad's a pirate, mum's a hippy), is no accidental ocean activist. In a way she was born to represent the ocean. From the early age of two, she and her family were living on a yacht sailing the waters of Australia's Gold Coast and the Great Barrier Reef. At the 12 Madison became a certified Open Water diver in the sharky waters of Byron Bay at Julian Rocks, and at age 14 she had picked up an underwater camera for the first time. Then at 16 she decided to dedicate her life to the preservation and protection of sharks after learning a shark fishery inside the Great Barrier Reef could legally harvest 100,000 sharks a year, and has been working tirelessly as an activist ever since. She is probably one of a very few people who refer to sharks as "adorable, and credits Peter Benchley, his book and the Spielberg film “Jaws" for being an inspiration and reminder how important it is to make sure sharks are not seen as scary creatures or a threat to humans, but should be preserved and honored as one of the oldest and most important apex predators in the ocean eco-system. Stewart is also an Ocean Guardian in the Australian documentary "Blue.”, was featured in Rob Stewart's “Sharkwater Extinction”, and at the age of 24, she was named Australian Geographic Society Young Conservationist of the Year for her anti-shark finning work. Her non profit, The Hooper Collective, aims to inflict change and shed light on laws exploiting sharks, change the human perception of them, and fight the trades decimating shark populations around the world, while improving the quality of life for humans at threat from these animals. Charles Vinick is one of the elder statesman of the marine environmental movement. He has long been an educator, marine mammal activist, youth mentor, and film producer throughout his career. Charles has received commendations from the White House for his work with youth education and from the Los Angeles City Council for community environmentalism. He has also worked with non profits, and in business with renewable energy and technology companies. A member of the Whale Sanctuary Project Board of Directors since mid-2016, Charles brings a unique blend of leadership and experience to his role as Executive Director. With a strong background in business that includes extensive experience in ocean + environmental policy, project management and government relations, Charles keeps current with a solid vision for the future. The Whale Sanctuary Project, his most ambitious yet, with Jean Michel, is creating the first North American seaside sanctuary for captive cetaceans in Nova Scotia. For over 40 years, Charles has worked alongside the Cousteau family, early on with Jacques Yves and currently with Jean-Michel, helping these preeminent ocean explorers establish, grow and sustain multiple initiatives. As an adviser, and cofounder of the Cousteau Centers, Inc., Charles developed and managed Parc Oceanique Cousteau, an ocean education and entertainment complex in Paris. He shepherded the growth of the Cousteau Society and, from 1993 through 2003, served as Executive Vice President of the Jean-Michel Cousteau Institute and Ocean Futures Society, which produced educational programs as well as films about the ocean and the environment. During that time he was privileged to serve as director of the highly-publicized Keiko Project, a pioneering effort that marshaled public and media support to reintroduce to the wild the captive Orca made famous through the “Free Willy” films. Canadian born Captain Paul Watson is a pioneer of environmental activism who has helmed the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society for over 40 years. The fierce eco-warrior and founding member of Greenpeace remains one of the most vital voices in the conservation movement. Though he has been condemned, arrested and placed on the Interpol watch lists for his interventionist style, in the current climate crisis, his approach feels appropriate to the level of emergency. In 1977, he founded the Sea Shepherd Society, which is globally known for using guerrilla tactics to shut down illegal whaling, sealing and other wildlife killing at sea. In recent years Capt. Watson and Sea Shepherd has led the charge for removing hazardous gill-nets where there has long been an issue with extreme by-catch marine-life deaths. Notable is the activity in the Baja California/ Mexico region, with the Vaquita Whale rescue mission, a near extinct and coveted cetacean species. Today the movement has independent entities in over 20 countries working together on direct-action campaigns around the world with local governments and other NGO’s Capt. Emily Penn’s philosophy towards life has been shaped by spending over a decade out at sea, where one is constantly reacting to the changes around. Emily is a skipper and ocean advocate dedicated to studying environmental challenges in the most remote parts of our planet. She is an international public speaker and advisor on issues relating to our ocean and future society. She has organized large-scale community-led waste cleanups in the South Pacific, trawled for micro plastics through the Arctic Northwest Passage, rounded the planet on the record-breaking bio-fueled boat Earthrace, and worked on a cargo ship trading western supplies for coconuts. A big shift led her from a career in architecture to one dedicated to solving the issue of ocean plastic pollution. She founded eXXpedition, a pioneering all-female sailing research group investigating the causes and solutions to ocean plastic pollution. She developed the SHiFT Method to understand the crux of a problem and weigh up where we have the biggest opportunity to make an impact.
