Show Sponsor: CooperVision Dr. Paul Ajamian is one of the most generous, kind (in all the right ways) and passionate people I know. From his zeal to be a lifelong learner to way he pours out himself into the profession of Optometry, he shows why he was an obvious choice to be one of those inducted to the Optometry Hall of Fame (2015). I was there to see him get this honor. The honor was almost as big for me to see it as for Paul to get it. (No, his was way bigger.) Paul has been a visionary of the Optometric profession, seeing the future of where Optometry could go in co-management of eye surgical treatment to the way we treat our guests medically. And with modalities not conceived at the time. Paul’s involvement has been instrumental in the way we now carry out our day-to-day care of guests, in ways most just take for granted. By the end of this interview, you will see the hand he has played in how you do your day, and you will want to thank him personally. For me, it is very personal. Paul was my preceptor for my second externship. But little did I realize that he was one of the first students, while at New England College of Optometry, to undergo such education himself. Also, I did not realize he would play such an important role in my life from that moment on with his encouragement and example to lead. Paul has received accolades such as the SECO 1995 Optometrist of the South, one of ten Optometric Magazine named as their 2000 Optometrists of the Decade, the American Optometric Association’s 2014 recipient of the Distinguished Service Award (the AOA’s highest honor for lifetime achievement) and the aforementioned National Optometry Hall of Fame induction in 2015. He also stays busy within the profession serving currently as SECO International’s General Chair of the Education Committee, was President for the Georgia Optometric Association in 2000, served as the GOA Legislative and PAC chair for many years, and is a Founding Board Member for both the American Board of Optometry and the Optometric Glaucoma Society. But perhaps the biggest contribution he has made is shepherding thousands of future doctors as externs and residents, just like I was in 1992, to become the best optometrists they could be and to encourage serving in our profession just like Paul. Oh, and he still has time to earn a living as the Center Director for Omni Eye Services of Atlanta since 1984, after serving as the Education Director for the Vision Education Foundation (VEF-the nation’s first true co-management practice) beginning 1982. In his spare time, he’s hammered out two textbooks and is the Review of Optometry’s “Clinical Quandaries” author and supervisor. I am blessed to have Paul serve as a boss (SECO CE Committee), mentor (Omni Eye Services of ATL, GOA, SECO) and dear friend. Thank you, Paul. Today we’re joined by Peter Mattson, General Chair at MLPerf, a Staff Engineer at Google, and President of MLCommons. In our conversation with Peter, we discuss MLCommons and MLPerf, the former an open engineering group with the goal of accelerating machine learning innovation, and the latter a set of standardized Machine Learning speed benchmarks used to measure things like model training speed, throughput speed for inference. We explore the target user for the MLPerf benchmarks, the need for benchmarks in the ethics, bias, fairness space, and how they’re approaching this through the "People’s Speech" datasets. We also walk through the MLCommons best practices of getting a model into production, why it's so difficult, and how MLCube can make the process easier for researchers and developers. Security research domain has recently witnessed tremendous growth in respect to all aspects of information access and sharing. There has been notable progress in developing successful approaches to tackle the problem of user authentication. Among those approaches, biometric-based authentication firmly established itself as one of the most reliable, efficient, and versatile tools for providing discretionary access control to a secure resource or system. While state-of-the art methods for biometric authentication are becoming increasingly more powerful and better understood, the same unfortunately cannot be said about security of users populating on-line communities or cyberworld. Ensuring safe and secure communication and interaction among users and, respectably, their on-line identities presents unique challenges to academicians, as well as the industry and the public. Despite the fact that those challenges are regularly making headlines in the news, in government reports and in IT security domain, there is a lack of effort to address this urgent problem. The limited efforts that do exists are currently restricted to network security, password protection, encryption, database security and policy-making efforts. However, one of most crucial components for ensuring on-line security ñ the relationship between communication among users and user authentication, has been largely overlooked. This crucial issue requires a systematic study and a targeted effort to develop effective security solutions for cyberworlds, which is the main topic of this proposed talk. About the speaker: Marina L. Gavrilova is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science, University of Calgary. Dr. Gavrilova research interests lie in the area of biometric security, cognitive sciences, pattern recognition, social networking and cyberworlds. Prof. Gavrilova is founder and co-director of the Biometric Technologies Laboratory, with over 120 journal and conference papers, edited special issues, books and book chapters, including World Scientific Bestseller (2007) ñ ìImage Pattern Recognition: Synthesis and Analysis in Biometricî and "Multimodal Biometrics and Intelligent Image Processing for Security Systems". Together with Dr. Kenneth Tan, Prof. Gavrilova founded ICCSA series of international events in 2002. She was co-Chair of the International Workshop on Biometric Technologies BT 2004 and General Chair of International Conference on Cyberworlds CW2011, and currently servces as Founding Editor-in-Chief of Transactions on Computational Science Journal, Springer. Prof. Gavrilova has given Invited Keynotes and Invited Panel Lectures at such prestigious international events at INDIN 2003, 3AIí06, ICBAKE 2008, ICCSA 2010, ICCI*CC 2011, CyberWorlds 2012, GRAPHICON 2012 and appeared as panelist at 14th Security and Privacy Conference. She has given invited talks at DIMACS, Bell Labs, USA, Microsoft Research, Redmond, Samsung Research, South Korea and at numerous universities worldwide. Her research was profiled in newspaper and TV interviews, most recently being chosen to be featured in Exhibit at National Museum of Civilization, in National Film Canada production and on upcoming Discovery Channel biometric spoofing segment.
