In Neoliberalism and Race (Stanford UP, 2025) Lars Cornelissen argues that the category of race constitutes an organizing principle of neoliberal ideology. Using the methods of intellectual history and drawing on insights from critical race studies, Cornelissen explores the various racial constructs that structure neoliberal ideology, some of which are explicit, while others are more coded. Beginning in the interwar period and running through to recent developments, Neoliberalism and Race shows that racial themes have always pervaded neoliberal thinking. The book's key argument is that neoliberal thought is constitutively racialized—its racial motifs cannot be extracted from neoliberalism without rendering it theoretically and politically incoherent. The book aptly explores a wide variety of racial constructs through the structure of neoliberal ideology, deconstructing the conceptualizations in the works of landmark thinkers such as Ludwig von Mises, Friedrich Hayek, Peter Bauer, Thomas Sowell, Charles Murray, and others from the early twentieth century to the present. In this original—perhaps controversial—critique, Cornelissen asserts that neoliberal thinkers were not just the passive recipients of racial discourse, but also directly impacted it. Lars Cornelissen is a historian of neoliberalism. His writings have been published in History of European Ideas, Constellations, and Modern Intellectual History. Morteza Hajizadeh is a Ph.D. graduate in English from the University of Auckland in New Zealand. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Send us a textRoss Cornelissen, Master Distiller at 1792 Barton, shares the inside story of one of Kentucky's most historic and authentic whiskey production facilities and reveals how his scientific background shapes their distinct bourbon expressions.• Starting as a food science student who wanted to make cereal, Ross found his calling in fermentation and distillation• MGP provided invaluable technical experience working with countless mash bills, fermentation styles, and distillation techniques• 1792's distinctive flavor profile comes from high-rye mash bills and a proprietary yeast strain producing pronounced banana notes• Sweet Wheat has developed a cult following as the distillery's only wheated bourbon expression• Barrel aging locations dramatically affect flavor development with top-tier warehouse positions reaching 130-140 proof• The historical 1940s distillery focuses purely on production rather than visitor experiences• Master distilling involves technical expertise, leadership, and constant problem-solving rather than just tasting whiskey• The Bardstown distilling community features a welcoming, down-to-earth culture despite deep historical roots• Sazerac's long-term approach allows barrels to age until genuinely ready instead of rushing product to market• Small batch bourbon creation requires careful barrel selection and blending to maintain consistent flavor profilesRoss Cornelissen, Master Distiller at 1792 Barton, takes us deep into the heart of authentic Kentucky whiskey production in this fascinating conversation about science, tradition, and the relentless pursuit of quality.Far from the polished visitor experiences of many distilleries, Barton 1792 represents bourbon-making in its most authentic industrial form. The facility, dating back to 1879, features original equipment from the 1940s alongside modern production methods—all focused on creating exceptional spirits rather than entertaining tourists. As Cornelissen explains, "It's not about show. It's all about making bourbon."Cornelissen's unexpected journey to master distiller began with dreams of cereal production before a pivotal microbiology course revealed the fascinating world of fermentation. His technical education at MGP provided invaluable experience with countless variations in mash bills and distillation techniques. Now at Barton, he merges scientific precision with deep respect for Kentucky's distilling heritage. The conversation demystifies several bourbon-making secrets, from 1792's distinctive high-rye mash bill and banana-forward yeast strain to the dramatic effects of barrel positioning within rickhouses. Particularly fascinating is Cornelison's detailed explanation of small batch blending—a process requiring meticulous barrel selection to maintain consistent flavor profiles despite natural variations in aging. The coveted Sweet Wheat expression earns special attention, with Cornelissen confirming their willingness to reduce release sizes rather than compromise on quality.Beyond production techniques, Cornelissen offers refreshing honesty about what a master distiller's job actually entails. Far from the romanticized image of simply tasting whiskey all day, his role demands technical expertise, leadership skills, and constant problem-solving across every aspect of operations.Discover the science, history, and passion behind one of Ken Add for SOFL If You Have GohstsSupport the showhttps://www.scotchybourbonboys.com The Scotchy bourbon Boys are #3 in Feedspots Top 60 whiskey podcasts in the world https://podcast.feedspot.com/whiskey_podcasts/

Conceptual papers that offer new theories are hard to write and even harder to publish. You do not have empirical data to back up your arguments, which makes the papers easy to reject in the review cycle. We are also typically not well trained in theorizing, and there isn't even a clear process to theorizing we could learn or follow. Does that mean that we shouldn't even try to write theory papers? We ponder these questions, figure out what is so hard in writing conceptual papers – and share a few tricks that might help if you still wanted to write such a paper. In 2018, artisanal Italian vineyard Frank Cornelissen was one of the world's leading producers of natural wine. But when weather-related conditions damaged that year's grapes, founder Frank Cornelissen had to decide between staying true to the tenets of natural wine making, or breaking with his public beliefs to save that year's grapes by adding sulfites. Harvard Business School assistant professor Tiona Zuzul discusses the importance of staying true to your company's principles while remaining flexible enough to welcome progress.

America is in need of affordable housing; we're all aware. Buying your first home has become increasingly challenging for everyday people. This is where housing subsidies come in. Federal housing subsidies were created over ninety years ago to help Americans get into the housing market and strengthen the economy, but in 2024, much of that money may not be headed to homebuyers—it could be going to banks instead. On today's show, we talk to Sharon Cornelissen, Ph.D., Director of Housing at the Consumer Federation of America. Sharon's mission is to advocate for safe, affordable housing with equitable mortgage lending for American consumers. In this episode, Sharon illuminates the shocking fact that most Americans are completely unaware of—billions in housing subsidies AREN'T being used for housing. So, if they're not going to homebuyers, where are all the subsidies headed? Sharon discusses the banks that could be receiving a significant amount of these subsidies without providing any benefits for homebuyers, how the Coalition for Federal Home Loan Bank Reform is trying to change this, and how, if they succeed, affordable housing could see a MASSIVE influx in subsidies, that could help the housing market tremendously. In This Episode We Cover: Where the $7.3 billion in housing subsidies is actually going The Federal Home Loan Bank system and why it's in dire need of reform How the mortgage market changed over the past century and why we're seeing these problems How over $1 billion could be directed straight towards affordable housing How Sharon picked up a $7,000 house in one of the most devastated real estate markets And So Much More!
