Humans have been bartering and trading for millennia, building extraordinarily complex mechanisms of exchange centered on fiat currencies, contracts, and trust. As cryptocurrencies have emerged this past decade, economists and incentive designers have been forced to consider how to construct new forms of currency without the social lubricant of trust. How can we prove that every market participant is incentive aligned with market goals? What contributions can game theory, theoretical computer science, cryptography and microeconomics make to this newly energized field? That's the subject of this episode of “Securities” with Christian Catalini, the founder of the MIT Cryptoeconomics Lab. He and his colleagues fuse the fields of economics and computer science together with the goal of analyzing decentralized marketplaces and applications. It's just the latest endeavor for Catalini, who is also a Research Scientist at the MIT Sloan School of Management, the co-creator of Diem (formerly known as Libra), and the co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer at Lightspark. Joining host Danny Crichton is Lux's own Grace Isford, who invests in web3 and crypto infrastructure and is based in New York City. We'll talk about the growing community of crypto infrastructure analysts, the now-famous MIT Bitcoin Experiment, how academics are translating their work into crypto, and how to think about stablecoins in the aftermath of Luna's collapse this year.
For decades, the office was the default way to organize workers, but that default is being re-examined. Many workers (including me) prefer working remotely, and seem to be at least as productive working remotely as they are in the office. Remote capable organizations can hire from a bigger pool of workers than is available locally. All in all, remote work seems to have been underrated, relative to just a few years ago.But there are tradeoffs. I've written before that physical proximity seems to be important for building new relationships, even though those relationships seem to remain productive as people move away from each other. This podcast narrows the focus down to the office. Does bringing people together in the office actually facilitate meeting new people? (spoiler: yes) But I'll try and get more specific about how, when, and why this happens too. This podcast is an audio read through of the (initial draft of the) post Innovation at the Office, originally published on New Things Under the Sun.Articles Mentioned:Allen, Thomas and Gunter Henn. 2007. In this Best of 2019 episode, I selected the clips that seemed most representative of what crypto was about this year, which I call, The Year Things Got Geopolitical. My only regret is that none of the clips about DAOs lent themselves well to this episode. However, years from now, after we’ve got global stablecoins pinging around the world at a high transactions-per-second rate, the crypto community has made peace with U.S. regulators, and more of our lives seems to take place in the borderless digital world, perhaps we'll find it ironic that DAOs were burbling up right around the same time. Christian Catalini, co-creator of Libra and chief economist at Calibra, explains why Facebook made the design choices it made for Libra, reveals whether the team was prepared for the regulatory blowback it received after publishing the white paper, and talks about what it means for Libra now that nearly all the initial payment company members have left the Association. He describes how Facebook defined stability for Libra, whether the Chinese renminbi could ever be added to the reserve the way it is part of the IMF special drawing rights basket, and if so, what the Libra or Calibra would do if the Chinese government tried to censor individuals or transactions in the system. We also cover the tension between the desire to have strong know-your-customer and anti-money laundering processes on the platform but then also to bank the unbanked, who often don't have strong government identification. We also discuss how Facebook will make money from Calibra, what it would take for Facebook to let the Libra Association go forward without it, and why Facebook, which not too long ago was trying to woo China to enter the Chinese market, now says it is the best counterweight to a Chinese digital yuan. Plus, he answers how Facebook and Calibra will handle privacy. Thank you to our sponsors! Welcome to episode 66 of The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell. My second interview at the recent Bitcoin 2019 conference in San Francisco was with Jeremy Rubin, a fascinating guy who has contributed a ton to Bitcoin. We review Jeremy's background, discuss his current project (a BIP intended to aid with scaling pressures), and we revisit his controversial idea of a Bitcoin reorg in the wake of the recent Binance hack. And a lot more! Jeremy provides some pretty compelling content; I bet you'll enjoy this interview. Bitcoin rose to an astonishing $11,000 value last week (and is now sitting around $17,000) - astonishing for a currency which had a $1 value just six years ago. The decentralized payment network has seen ups and downs before, leading some to ask whether it's a good investment. Host Dan Loney speaks with Kevin Werbach, Professor of Legal Studies and Business Ethics at the Wharton School, and Christian Catalini, Assistant Professor of Technological Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Strategic Management at the MIT Sloan School of Management, to discuss why Bitcoin has hit this high mark and what this means for investors on Knowledge@Wharton. This week, we have stories on how ultraviolet rays may have jump-started the first enzymes on Earth, a new fossil find that helps date how quickly birds diversified after the extinction of all the other dinosaurs, and a drug that may help reverse the effects of traumatic brain injury on memory with Online News Editor Catherine Matacic and special guest Carolyn Gramling. Sarah Crespi talks to Christian Catalini about an experiment in which some early adopters were denied access to new technology and what it means for the dissemination of that tech. Show notes: ide.mit.edu/news-events-media?type_1=podcast In this podcast we discuss the economics of the blockchain and digital cryptocurrencies. Our guest is Christian Catalini, Assistant Professor of Technological Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Strategic Management at MIT’s Sloan School of Management. We begin the conversation by discussing the MIT Digital Currencies Research Study, which enabled the study of the determinants of the diffusion of bitcoin and the role of early adopters. We then transition to a discussion about what is different about the blockchain from an economics perspective. Specific subtopics include credential verification, micro payments, and smart contracts. We also discuss anonymity, pseudo-anonymity, and z-cash. Lastly, we speculate about possible government uses of cryptocurrencies.
Pimm Fox and Lisa Abramowicz talk to Christian Catalini, a professor at MIT, about Blockchain and why cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin could be widespread and disruptive. Then, John Stoltzfus, Oppenheimer's chief investment strategist, says he's still bullish on U.S. equities and the Asia region. Also, Bloomberg's Max Chafkin tells Pimm and Lisa why Google has never had to worry about financial disciple until now. Finally, Maxime Sbaihi, a Euro-area economist for Bloomberg Intelligence, discusses the ECB rate decision and its impact on markets.
