Welcome to episode 76 of The Bitcoin Game, sponsored by eToro. I'm Rob Mitchell. Today's interview is with Andrew Tierney, otherwise known online as Cybergibbons. Andrew hacks everything from oil rigs at his day job, to Cryptocurrency hardware wallets and smart locks in his free time. We conducted this interview a bit before COVID-19 had taken over the planet, back in the good old days (a few weeks ago), when we were more worried about malware than going to the grocery store without an N95 mask. Andrew and I discuss hacking hardware wallets, general security, IoT devices, home routers, his day job as a hacker for hire, and other stuff too. I hope you enjoy! The Bitcoin Game #75: 2014 Interview with Dr. Jochen "Johoe" Hoenicke

Welcome to episode 75 of The Bitcoin Game, sponsored by eToro. I'm Rob Mitchell. I started podcasting in late 2014, and one of the greatest things to happen in those early episodes was landing an exclusive longform interview with Dr. Jochen "Johoe" Hoenicke, the 2014 Bitcoin Hero. Badass white hat Bitcoin hacker Johoe (at least that's what I call him) rescued insecure Bitcoin UTXOs from Blockchain.info wallets before they could be taken by less-scrupulous hackers. This was after his contributions to understanding the RNG issues with Android Bitcoin wallets in 2013. He also rescued insecure Bitcoin from one other platform, which he admits for the first time in this interview. Some months after this interview, Johoe responsibly published a side-channel attack on a TREZOR, which eventually led to Satoshi Labs hiring him as a TREZOR Cryptographer. Johoe's Bitcoin mempool stats site is yet another contribution he's made to the space. This is the only audio (or video) interview with Johoe that I'm aware of, and it's worth a listen if you didn't catch it the first time. It's even educational, as Johoe explains concepts like how Bitcoin signatures work and what specifically went wrong with various wallets, in a way that's accessible for non-technical people like myself. Hope you enjoy my first "rebroadcast" to celebrate 75! David hired Nick Szabo to help with IronKey (David's previous business, a secure USB product). And David is currently the founder and CEO of CipherTrace, one of the big three "blockchain analysis" companies. David's past and present positions give him a uniquely informed perspective, and I was fascinated to hear his takes. Welcome to episode 73 of The Bitcoin Game, sponsored by eToro. When I started paying attention to Bitcoin Twitter in 2013, I noticed a guy named Tim Pastoor, who seemed pretty well-respected by the Bitcoin Twitter community. He and I eventually became good friends on Twitter, so much so that we hung out for a long afternoon when I visited Amsterdam a few years ago. Tim has been focused on peer-to-peer identity and reputation systems for the past five years, supporting Martti Malmi's work in the space (Martti was the first coder to work with Satoshi on Bitcoin). Twitter's Jack Dorsey recently garnered a ton of attention promoting the goal of decentralized social media, and P2P identity may well be the base layer for such projects. Hope you enjoy our talk! Welcome to episode 72 of The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell. This episode came about in an unexpected way. I had the opportunity to speak with Guy Hirsch (USA Managing Director for eToro) at the CIS conference in Los Angeles. My plan was to grab some sound bites from Guy to use in podcast episodes as part of eToro's sponsorship. But I'm such a curious person that I couldn't help but ask a bunch of genuine questions I had about the platform. Turned out, the brief interview was interesting and informative enough that I decided to release it as a stand-alone episode. So, if you've wondered about eToro after seeing them practically everywhere in the crypto space (not to mention the snazzy eToro commercial with Alec Baldwin), this episode will get you up to speed! Welcome to episode 65 of The Bitcoin Game. I'm Rob Mitchell, and I just got back from the Bitcoin 2019 conference in San Francisco. I'm really glad I decided to attend after taking a long break from conferences, as I had a great time and got some really good interviews. I'm going to release them in the order I recorded them, so up first is Jimmy Song. Oh, I also want listener feedback. This interview is unedited, whereas my typical episodes are heavily edited, with the goal of delivering the most listenable and content-dense experience possible. And I really love editing out dumb things I say! But all that editing takes a lot of time, and it really reduces the amount of content I release. Just comment on this episode's show notes page, or I'm theBTCgame on Twitter. The other day, an interesting post crossed my path on "Crypto Twitter." This guy was super excited about receiving his Coinmine, a device I was not familiar with. It appeared to be a plug-and-play multi-purpose GPU miner and Bitcoin/Lightning Network full node. And it looked pretty. I was intrigued. I started investigating the product, and quickly discovered that Coinminer's headquarters is right here in Los Angeles. And that's how my interview with Farbood Nivi, CEO and co-founder of Coinmine, was conceived. I hadn't really considered multi-purpose devices such as a Coinmine, which currently can mine Ethereum, Monero, Zcash and Grin. It's not hard to imagine that future incarnations of this product could bring full Bitcoin/Lightning nodes and speculative Cryptocurrency mining to many new mainstream people who are willing to pay a premium for this level of simplicity. Could cloud-controlled plug-and-play devices theoretically give a centralized party too much control over a lot of miners? Please comment below if you have thoughts! After arranging this interview, Coinmine offered me a $50 discount for listeners, which can be claimed using the discount code BitcoinGame at checkout, or going to this URL: https://coinmine.com/bitcoingame. The Bitcoin Game will receive a referral fee for purchases using this code, however, that did not influence the content of this episode. Welcome to episode 58 of The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell. In January of this year, I saw lots of talk about the World Economic Forum's speeches and panels in Davos. Even Donald Trump spoke at this event. But the panel I was most interested in was called The Crypto Asset Bubble, and it featured Nobel Prize Laureate Robert Shiller. I didn't know any of the other panelists, but the one who stuck out to me the most was Jennifer Zhu Scott. She seemed very pro-Bitcoin and was a very eloquent speaker. I wondered why I'd never heard of her before. I immediately invited Jen to be a guest on my podcast, and we finally connected just a bit ago, thanks to Twitter. We cover many topics including the World Economic Forum, her favorite project, China, and her involvement in the hit HBO series, Silicon Valley. Welcome to episode 57 of The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell. I'm someone who feels a bit like a Bitcoin Maximalist, yet I still really wanted to learn about Amaury Séchet, lead developer of Bitcoin Cash (EDIT: note it's been pointed out that Amaury is the lead dev of Bitcoin ABC, the main client used for BCH, but he isn't technically the lead dev for BCH - apologies for the inaccurate wording). I like that many of Amaury's opinions seem fairly independent, rather than sticking to a party line. In this long-form interview, we talk about Amaury's initial interest in Bitcoin, why he started Bitcoin ABC, the software behind Bitcoin Cash, and what he saw as three critical mistakes he believed would prevent a big block fork from becoming the majority chain at launch. Hello, welcome to episode 41 of The Bitcoin Game.I'm Rob Mitchell, and my guest today is Charlie Shrem. When I got into Bitcoin, the two ways I was most familiar with to buy Bitcoin were to wire money to Mt. Gox in Japan, or go to the local 7-Eleven to send cash to BitInstant. It's not hard to see why BitInstant became one of the biggest Bitcoin companies in the U.S., until it stopped doing business in 2013. Charlie Shrem was BitInstant's CEO and Co-Founder, he was very active in the community, and I would guess most Bitcoiners see him as someone who took one for the team. Charlie served a two-year sentence for activities related to money laundering, lack of proper licensing, and not filing suspicious activity reports. Of course, many feel he was doing nothing morally wrong, and some argue the legal case wasn't that strong. Surely his prison sentence was an early warning shot to those running Bitcoin businesses. Now that Charlie Shrem has served his time, he's become active in the community again. In today's episode, Charlie and I discuss his early days in Bitcoin, BitInstant, his new Mainstreet.ky venture, Steemit.com, the People's Bank of China's effect on Bitcoin, and more. My name is Rob Mitchell, and it's hard to believe this is my 40th episode of The Bitcoin Game. I was a fan of Let's Talk Bitcoinfrom day one, since it launched right after I got into Bitcoin. I reached out to Adam B. Levine early on, and worked with the LTB Network in various capacities. During that time, I recorded a number of interviews that weren't quite publishable, for one reason or another. But after attending a Bitcoin Job Fair, I eventually collected enough solid content to release my first episode of The Bitcoin Game on October 15, 2014. A bit under 20 episodes per year isn't so bad, is it? Regular listeners are aware that my releases have been less frequent in 2016. So I felt extra pressure to do something special for my year-end, 40th episode. I sent messages to over 100 cryptocurrency enthusiasts, inviting them to record a holiday or new year greeting. I made suggestions, such as reviewing 2016 or making predictions for 2017, but I tried to make it open-ended. I ended up with submissions from 26 people who in some cases represent very divergent viewpoints. It's a jam packed, ad-free show; I hope you enjoy! Oh, before I forget… I want to propose that on January 3rd, the 8th anniversary of Bitcoin's genesis block, every cryptocurrency aficionado take a day to chill on the arguing, so we get a sense of what it's like to be a huge, cohesive group. Can you go so far as to find someone you typically take issue with, and compliment them on something you genuinely value about that person? I'm just asking for one day a year. Who's with me? And you possibly are aware that Roger is a huge proponent of increasing Bitcoin's maximum block size as soon as possible. But he's not just talking about it, he's taking action, as you'll hear. Roger is certainly a doer, and besides all the Bitcoin companies Roger is involved with, he's done things like donate over $150,000 to Ross Ulbrect's legal defense fund, and offer $250,000 to the charity of Bernie Sanders' choosing, in exchange for debating Adam Kokesh (for the ultimate socialist vs. voluntaryist debate). Aside from hearing Roger's take on scaling Bitcoin, we cover a number of subjects, including how much Roger earned from his first Steemit post (it's a lot!). Roger even lets us in on his Bitcoin gut check a few weeks ago, when he sold some of his Bitcoin and bought a prominent privacy-oriented cryptocurrency (listen to find out which one). It was a real treat to have him on the show. Stay tuned to the very end of the podcast for a blessing from Bitcoin Jesus. Hello, welcome to episode 37 of The Bitcoin Game. I'm Rob Mitchell. Everyone has a unique story. When I started this podcast, I really wanted to talk to Bitcoiners who hadn't been exposed in Bitcoin media. There are a couple of really interesting local Bitcoin traders I've tried to interview, but surprisingly, sometimes it's easier to get a Bitcoin core developer on the show, than many of the lesser-known people who also have Bitcoin-centric lives. I met Christopher Camp at my first Bitcoin meetup, but I'd only spoken to him for a few minutes. Now, over three years later, I finally got to sit down with Chris and find out a bit more about him and his interest in Bitcoin. Christoper started an organization called Restart Democracy, he worked for Coinbase, and he currently works for Blockchain.info. For perspective, this was recorded a few weeks ago, before the halving, and when the price of Bitcoin was on a strong upward trajectory, breaching 52-week highs. Hello, welcome to episode 36 of The Bitcoin Game. I'm Rob Mitchell. I have to admit, as cool as Ethereum has always sounded to me, I haven't kept up on it. Then, earlier this month, the market cap of Ether surpassed one billion dollars, about a sixth of Bitcoin's market cap. The price has come down a bit since then, but seeing the high valuation made me realize I'd better get caught up on Ethereum, now that it's the second biggest cryptocurrency. When I had lunch with him before our interview, Maurice kept his phone powered off and explained he wouldn't use a credit card, except maybe to pay for already-tracked air travel. After our meal, he used his Trezor to sign a Bitcoin payment on his laptop, via the cafe's Wi-Fi. There's nothing in particular Maurice is trying to hide, he simply wants to live his life free from surveillance of his location and financial activities. Also known as Wiz, J. Maurice was part of the WizSec team that performed an in-depth analysis of the Bitcoins missing from Mt. Gox. He's also been called Roger Ver's go-to guy when it comes to personal defense from hackers. Maurice has many financial clients too, but as they often turn to him after they've experienced a breach, this work is usually confidential. Hello, welcome to episode 28 of The Bitcoin Game. I'm Rob Mitchell. When I scheduled an interview with CoinCube CEO Robert Allen, I felt pretty skeptical. Would my "gotcha" questions be too difficult for Robert to field? Listen to find out! 7/19/16 UPDATE: For the sake of being informative, the gains in my CoinCube-traded account to date are about 50% of the gains had I simply bought and hold Bitcoin in this account. CoinCube's Wave algorithm attempts to avoid bear markets by selling BTC, but my sense is it frequently misses price spikes this way. So, this first experimentation with a Bitcoin trading bot has been a disappontment so far. Of course, past performance is never a guarantee of future results (or everyone would be rich). Hello, welcome to episode 27 of The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell. I've been a podcast listener for many years now, so when I got interested in Bitcoin, listening to Bitcoin podcasts was a natural. I think Adam B. Levine launched The Daily Bitcoin the same day I first searched for Bitcoin podcasts. And I've been hooked on Bitcoin podcasts ever since. Bitcoins and Gravy has always been a hugely influential show for me. In a sea of podcasts with poor audio quality and barely existent production values, Bitcoins and Gravy sounded as well-produced as any podcast I'd ever heard. Even the short musical pieces between segments were done to perfection. John also experimented with characters and fictional entertainment on some episodes, which really helped Bitcoins and Gravy stand out as something a bit different. Even after spending time with John at the 2015 Texas Bitcoin Conference, I still find he reverts back to a larger-than-life persona when I listen to him podcast. When I realized John Barrett missed releasing the August 9, 2015, episode of Bitcoins and Gravy, I really took notice. I checked in with John, wanting to make sure he was okay. He said he was, but that he was moving to every other week. But then a couple more weeks went by, and still no new episodes appeared. It was clear something was up, and I was happy he agreed to be on my show. We spoke for almost two and a half hours, everything from light-hearted talk to John's very strong views about various subjects. While I thought we'd be bantering more, John really takes a subject and runs with it. Fans of John Barrett and Bitcoins and Gravy won't want to miss this episode.
