Sistah Girls, this year we hosted Behind the Pen virtually while celebrating Black Indie Authors Day. I got a chance to interview (with a live virtual audience) some of the heavy hitters in Black Indie Romance.
T.S.O.B. is still on break for the summer and coming off the heels of a phenomenal live show; in the meantime, Dr. G took the time to chat it up with an indirect sexuality educator of sorts, romance novelist and creative Christina C. Jones. Not a typical educator-to-educator conversation by any means; however, the two had a wonderful discussion about centering Blackness in love stories, combating stigma and biphobia against Black gay men, and the capacity for romance novels to facilitate important discussions about reproductive health, contraceptives, STIs, consent, and much, much more! A lovely listen to hold you over as we move into the Fall--check it out! NOTE: A scene from the Christina's novel "Something Like Love", in which heroine Astrid claps back at two biphobic women during a heated conversation in her love interest's hometown was discussed during this episode; the specific excerpt from that scene can be listened to here: Episode Transcripts are delayed, but will be forthcoming as soon as possible. Guest Bio: Christina C. Jones is a best-selling romance novelist and digital media creator. A timeless storyteller, she is lauded by readers for her ability to seamlessly weave the complexities of modern life into captivating tales of black romance. As an author, Christina's work has been featured in various media outlets such as Oprah Mag and Shondaland.com and she is the winner of numerous community awards. In addition to her full-time writing career, she cofounded Girl, Have You Read – a popular digital platform that amplifies black romance authors and their stories. A former graphic designer, Christina has a passion for making things beautiful and can usually be found crafting and cooking in her spare time. She currently lives in Arkansas with her husband and their two children. More information about Christina and her work can be found at https://beingmrsjones.com/.
In a series of podcast episodes that get to the heart of the authors whose works drew me to romance in particular, I've rounded up some friends to come along for the ride and discuss these authors, their works, and how they influence(d)/impact(ed). One of the first names on my list was Eric Jerome Dickey and I knew that I couldn't discuss him with no one other than my girl CCJ. Christina and mine's conversation begins loosely guided by Friends and Lovers x EJD, but we meander into a bevy of other subjects. It's a long ride, but it's worth every second of the journey in my less than humble opinion, ha! Haunted The title of this book is so apt. The atmosphere around Khalida is eerie and the sense that she is being haunted is palpable. As she tries to convince herself she is content in her life, Aram enters and shows her that she truly longs for so much more. At first the path to understanding her true nature and history is hard but with Aram as a catalyst Khalida rediscovers her memories and what she has been missing. The scenes between Aram and Khalida could not be hotter! The electricity jumps off the page and runs along your skin making everything tingle. The whole book kept us engaged and guessing as to what was coming next. Coveted Four years after writing Haunted, Christina returns to the world to give us Khalida's sister's story. We follow as mysterious things keep happening around Ancelin and lead to Nasir being assigned to protect her from the darkness. This book is a good follow up to Haunted but suffers a bit from the twist not being as surprising. Luckily, the sex is just as steamy! The massage scene in particular was one of our favorites. Don't get too excited for a nice resolution, the book ends with so much more to be investigated and explained. We look forward to revisiting this world when more books come, hopefully it's not another four years! ***We would love and appreciate it if you could Subscribe then Rate & Review us on iTunes! The Novel:Office HoursThe Author:Katrina JacksonThe Noobie:Jazmen, Host of Three Black ChicksBlk & Bkish MerchLiterally BlackThe Synopsis:What's life like on the tenure track? For Assistant Professor of Sociology, Dr. Deja Evans, it sucks. Hard. Every day.Between the class prep, the meetings, grading student work, trying to find time to complete her own research and the meetings, she didn't have a life, she had a digital calendar that decided whether she got to wallow in her feelings at 3pm or 7pm, on Thursday or maybe Sunday. And the worst meeting of them all was the two-and-a-half-hour, once a month Faculty Senate, which was drier than her dating life, duller than her skin in winter and far longer than her attention span. The only thing that made those never-ending Faculty Senate meetings bearable was watching Dr. Alejandro Mendoza, Associate Professor of History, breathe. For years, Deja had harbored a kind of secret crush on the sexiest man on campus never thinking that he would ever feel the same, until one unexpected day, they have a steamy after hours encounter in her office and suddenly her life seems much more exciting. That lasts about half a minute.Over the course of a hectic academic year, Deja tries to survive her classes, help her students, prepare herself for her third-year review, and most important of all, she has to learn how to get out of her own way and just let Alejandro love her.Show Notes: - Introducing the woman who does it all :) - The Boobies & Noobies drinking game - A very witchy birthday- Reading makes for better writing- The importance of reading independently published Black stories (00:05:37)- Shoutout to Christina C.
