Marya: I love to cook a great meal together and then enjoy it on our amazing patio! Jack: In our off time, my wife and I will either be in our garden or out with the dogs (recently, Centennial Park). 2. What is on your nightstand right now? Marya: A fluff novel for the summer called Secrets of the Chocolate House by Paula Brackston, and then for more in-depth reading, The Enneagram of Belonging by Christopher L. Heuertz. Jack: I always have a copy of The Economist and right now, I'm reading Strong Towns by Charles Marohn. I will also take this opportunity to plug my favorite recent book, The Revolt of the Public by Martin Gurri. 3. If it was your birthday, what's that one place that your family would know you would want to go for dinner? Marya: Wherever has the best patio – my birthday is in August. So Montana Brewing Co. (the beer is the bomb) Jake's on the West End (oh those coconut shrimp!) Buffalo Block (seriously best patio around), or The Vig in the heights (love those cheese curds!) Jack: I would have to say Blue's BBQ for lunch and Walker's for dinner.

By nature, all of us have the Child, Adolescent and Adult parts of ourselves...but these parts can look very different depending on our personality and life experience. Through the lens of the Enneagram, we can understand more about our personality and the ways we show up in stress and in health, and in this episode, Enneagram coach Ramona Reid breaks down how the wounds we received as a child affect our personality later in life. Our Enneagram type is often influenced by the message we did not hear as a child, and we form a personality or mask to make up for that wound. This might look like trying to be good and perfect, getting big and strong or trying to keep the peace with everyone around us, but it’s always an ego response. Ramona does a beautiful job tying the Enneagram into The Adult Chair model and helping each of us understand what our Child, Adolescent and Adult might look like based on our type. Listen to discover: The three Enneagram centers and the nine types The message each type didn’t receive as a child and the wounding each type carries The mask each type creates to cover that wounding What the core essence (healthy Adult) looks like for each type How to recognize our triggers and move towards presence This show was as cool as it was informative! Even if you have never heard of the Enneagram, you will benefit from listening as it will deepen your understanding of your wounding and how you are showing up in the world. If you want to listen to the other shows that Ramona has been on to deepen your understanding of the Enneagram, see the show notes below. They are all brilliant shows! “The point is not to never be triggered again. It’s to understand that triggers are human and they’re mine...I want to learn how to encounter them with more accountability and integrity and love for myself and my inner child.” - Ramona Reid “Everyone’s just sort of doing the best they can, and then we internalize that. When we’re little, we think, ‘This is about me,’ and we create separation from our essence.” - Ramona Reid “As children, we are sponges and absorb everything around us...and it becomes ours. It’s why you’ve got to observe everything and pay attention to what’s going on inside of you.” - Michelle Chalfant “The work from my perspective is getting in touch with what’s actually going on. Notice where our minds are going, where our hearts are going, out of presence...when we’re able to be present, that’s when our core essential qualities will show up.” - Ramona Reid Resources Ramona Reid Website http://www.mynashvillecenter.com Ramona Reid Radio Show http://www.holisticrevolution.com Episode #51: Find Your Authentic Self in the Heart of Your Enneagram https://theadultchair.com/podcast/51 Episode #114: Deepening The Adult Chair Using the Wisdom of the Enneagram https://theadultchair.com/podcast/114 Episode #205: Stress and Your Enneagram Type https://theadultchair.com/podcasts/205/ Book: Sacred Enneagram - Christopher L. The Enneagram is thousands of years old and is a powerful tool for personal transformation as well as a tool for empathy with even our most difficult relationships. The unique thing about the enneagram is that other personality tests tend to make you feel good and highlight your strengths. The Enneagram does not do that. I always say, “you’ll know what number you are when the description of it hurts your feelings.” This doesn’t work like a PLACEMENT EXAM. ANY number can be partners with ANY other number. And while we’re at it—any number can do any job THEY deem valuable and a good fit for them. So what exactly is it then, you ask? Great question. We’ll take a look at today:What is the enneagram? How does it work? Where does it come from? What are the ways we can use it? PLUS an overview of each number’s strengths, opportunities for growth, paths for development, and each number's “security blanket.” Resources mentioned: Books:The Road Back to You- Ian Morgan Cron & Suzanne Stabile The Paths Between Us - Suzanne Stabile The Complete Enneagram - Beatrice Chestnut The Sacred Enneagram - Christopher L. Gospel Scripture: (all NIV) Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” Romans 3:24 “and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” Romans 3:25 (a) “God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood.” Hebrews 9:22 (b) “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.” Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:11 “Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.” John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Romans 10:9 “That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Luke 15:10 says “In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” Romans 8:1 “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” Ephesians 1:13–14 “And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession- to the praise of his glory.” Ephesians 1:15–23 “For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.” Ephesians 2:8–10 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God‘s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.“ Ephesians 2:13 “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.“ Philippians 1:6 “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

In this 2nd Episode with TJ Teems, we take a closer look at the Enneagram with the three stances. She describes each stance (Aggressive, Depending/Earning and the Withdrawing Stance), and why this can be a good place to start if you’re just learning about the Enneagram. Understanding our stance can help us move toward a healthy relationship with yourself and others. She encourages us to be willing to learn from other stances and ways we can use the Enneagram as a tool for personal growth. This episode is Part 2 of a 2 Part Series. Don’t miss part 1: Episode #28. In this episode, we discuss the best spiritual practices for each personality type on the Enneagram. I first discovered the Enneagram in my first class of my Masters program with J.K. Jones. He introduced us to Ian Morgan Cron's book, The Road Back to You: An Enneagram Journey to Self-Discovery (https://www.amazon.com/Road-Back-You-Enneagram-Self-Discovery/dp/0830846190/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=7O7N260ZOH8M&keywords=the+road+back+to+you&qid=1560346216&s=digital-text&sprefix=The+Road+back+t%2Cdigital-text%2C150&sr=1-1-spons&psc=1) and I bought it, but I put it on the read later list. A few months later, I was walking down the hall to our kids ministry area and saw a guy reading Cron's book and I stopped and had a good conversation about it. Then I took the Enneagram test and found out my number and then it seemed that everyone was discovering the Enneagram. Our staff listened to podcasts on it and took the tests together so we could figure out how to work together better. Then I had a conversation in the office with Brenda Baldovin and discovered that she had studied the Enneagram and the connection between personality and what spiritual practices work best for what type. With that conversation in mind, I wanted to further the discussion in podcast form. On this rouge episode I saw an opportunity when my best friend since 6th grade came by to tell me all about her recent experience at a silent 7-day meditation retreat. Not only is she the smartest, most generous and impressive human I know, she has taught me so much about what's truly important. We chat about what it’s like being a social justice advocate, agnostic future meditation instructor who grew up wanting to me a nun and a 2 Enneagram personality type. This episode reinforces that influence is NOT measured by Instagram follower count - but by fearlessly living your purpose and unique truth. Keila is the Field Director at the Tennessee justice center - one of the nation’s leading non-profit legal advocacy firms focused on helping TennCare enrollees access the health services to which they are entitled. She leads TJC’s Advocacy Team, whose mission is to protect and expand Medicaid and to work toward universal health coverage.
