"I'm Drinking My Coffee" is a program with a stupid name in which Josh Gaines says what feels true to him about life, sometimes in a funny way. This time he talks about how divorced single dads are often perceived by other partnered parents, then how he went to the local pool with a cranky lady who wiled-out on the underpaid teenage workers. Texture returns with a sweeping dismissal of all previous episodes in favor of this, THE NEW GAINES AEON (heh heh, just kidding, kind of). I talk about my history in Evangelical Christianity, delving into the study of the Occult over the past year, and how Ceremonial and Ritual Magick ultimately led me back to the basics: simply Meditating. I talk about how there's been a lot of monetizing of this trendy "new" practice in America and some of the pitfalls of how it's perceived and what it's for, and offer some suggestions as to a higher purpose for sitting and breathing, and how you don't need any of the Spiritual Materialism shit, but simply, your own body and breath. Not coming from the perspective of an expert, merely sharing what I've learned and have found to be helpful. Josh put this episode up on Friday, Dec 21st, then he got nervous about the content that was said and took the episode down. Here it is again, unedited, as it should be. Josh discusses the slew of advertising thrown our way on a constant basis, how we're brainwashed into being consumers and the American deception of possessions bringing us contentment, peace and satisfaction. Also, some contemplative suggestions for those who find holidays and the integrated family dynamics more stressful than fun. Josh waxes philosophic about how our society seems to have the hardest time asking for help, and giving it. Where in your life do you need help and aren't asking for it? Where can you give help? Josh discusses how our Ego, that self-protective inner part of us that is so often offended or threatened, insists that we are not good enough, that we haven't worked hard enough, that we deserve more, that others are somehow lesser, that we are entitled to self-absorbed greatness. He combats this idea--one which is perpetuated daily in America and perhaps the cause of a lot of societal issues--with personal anecdotes, brutal honesty, humor, kindness and hope. Up top, Josh mentions one serious thing and one humorous story involving spiders before using a quote by Richard Rohr to launch into an in-depth conversation about the Western ideals of consumerism, distraction and entertainment. With a non-judgmental yet starkly honest approach, Josh explores how these things may be hindering us from doing the hard, important work of self-examination, addressing personal issues or past traumas and leaning into solitude for sake of growth. This episode ponders what material things we might be using to temporarily escape from the darker, more troubling realities of our hearts (and how we don't need to fear stepping into those places). Josh discusses the modern day tendency to strive for relevance, attention and a social following, often at the expense of healthier, more tangible facets of life. Also, how social media has perpetuated the false idea that we are not good enough, and the delusion that working harder and treating productivity as king will deliver some sort of satisfactory result in our lives. Josh recounts a particularly harrowing day of deep depression, insecurity, panic, temporary loss of all desire for good things and a fear that personal growth and maturity had been forfeited. He also describes the steps taken to move forward from moments like this. These sensations may be particularly familiar to Type 4’s on the Enneagram, however the experience is certainly not limited to only 4’s. In the second half of the episode, Josh discusses the problem in comparing ourselves to others who are more "successful" than us and making assumptions that we are somehow less or more than another person, based only on accomplishments. Caleb Davis is an artist friend with whom Josh grew up in Albuquerque. They talk about a bunch of things, some of which are: Millennials leaving the evangelical church, marijuana, alcohol use & abuse, anxiety, depression, masturbation and porn, breaking away from one’s upbringing, loneliness, the art scene in Atlanta, etc. They’re both thoughtful dudes who take time to formulate sentences so there are some long pauses. Put it on 1.5x speed or deal with it because there’s some good stuff in there, ya silly goose. Josh discusses how the stereotypical, overt version of masculinity in the West has perpetuated a male-dominated society of empty aggression, bullying, a cutthroat workplace and deep insecurities in generations of men, and how this is a broken cycle that has affected nearly every facet of modern life.
