Kevin ‘Boxer' Moran, Minister of State at the Department of Public Expenditure with responsibility for the OPW, reacts to the damage caused to OPW assets at a site near Castletown House, Co Kildare.
Castletown House, the large public land around Celbridge and Leixlip, is still caught in a battle between the locals and the OPW.There has been a long running stand-off at the heritage site in Co Kildare.Locals have maintained a presence at the entrance to Castletown House since September 2023, which had resulted in the majority of OPW staff not accessing the site. The protests began after an entrance and car park near the M4 was closed to the public and to OPW staff by the private owner of the land. So, will a resolution be reached?Andrea is joined by local Soc Dems Councillor Claire O'Rourke, as well as local listeners, to discuss.

Senan Kelly is from Leixlip, Co Kildare. Currently the Irish welterweight champion, he will defend his title against Dublin's Declan Geraghty at the National Stadium on April 12. It's third time lucky for this pair after two previous dates fell through, and promises to be a compelling contest atop another JB Boxing Promotions card as the business graduates from small-hall to the bigger leagues. Kelly's career has been revitalised since linking up with Byrne in 2023. He'd spent a three-year spell on the sidelines between 2020 and 2023, partly down to the pandemic, mainly down to a desperate shoulder injury that realistically would cause most budding boxers to pack it in and focus on other endeavours. But Kelly isn't most budding boxers. In his demeanour, in his performances, you can see a competitor who'll do whatever it takes to win. Here, The Rocky Road visits Kelly at his house as he tells us about falling into the sport, why he's not interested if he's not directly involved and why he lives and breathes boxing - to the point that he converted his garage into a gym to train others. He also talks about financial insecurities, putting his life on hold to chase the dream and the pride his feels to headline at the home of Irish boxing. Hosted on Acast. Photo: Irish Midland Ringing Group A study led by University of Galway has revealed that swans in the Greater Dublin and Co Kildare area frequently carry antimicrobial resistant (AMR) bacteria in their guts that are very similar to those that cause difficult-to-treat infections in humans. The findings, from the research project titled WILD-AMR, indicate that swans living in urban waterways can act as a reservoir for pathogenic, multidrug-resistant bacteria, including some that are resistant to last-resort antibiotics. University of Galway study shows high rates of antimicrobial resistant bacteria in swans AMR is one of the most pressing global health challenges as it affects human and animal health, agriculture, food systems, and the environment. Working with the Irish Midland Ringing Group, faecal samples from 17 swans living in several locations around the Greater Dublin Area, including Broadmeadow Estuary in Swords, Bray harbour, Newbridge, Co Kildare, and along the Grand Canal in Dublin city were collected for analysis. Of the 17 samples, 11 were positive for one or more AMR bacteria, with 35 AMR bacteria detected overall. The most common type of AMR bacteria detected were multidrug-resistant E. coli that produced enzymes capable of breaking down beta-lactam antibiotics (ESBL-E. coli). The WILD-AMR project adopted a One Health approach to tracking the spread of AMR pathogens, investigating the links between human, animal and environmental health. The research team explored whether wild animals living and feeding in human impacted habitats were potential vectors of AMR. Key findings include: A high prevalence of AMR was detected in swans, with 65% positive for one or more AMR "superbug" Resistance to last-resort antimicrobials: The team detected strains of E. coli resistant to the last-resort antibiotics carbapenems and colistin, which are reserved for use when the first and second-line antimicrobials fail to clear the infection "High-risk clones": whole genome sequencing revealed that over half of the multidrug-resistant E. coli carried by swans belonged to "high-risk clones"; closely related pathogenic E. coli that are very good at causing urinary tract and blood stream infections in humans. Lead researcher of the study Aneta Kovarova, Senior Technical Officer in the School of Medicine at University of Galway, said: "We detected the same pathogenic AMR E. coli in multiple swans, both from those living in the same location and those living in different locations. It is likely that the high rate of detection of these AMR bacteria in swans is linked to human-associated pollution of their shared water habitat with treated and untreated wastewaters and through storm water overflows. However direct spread from swan to swan cannot be ruled out." Principal Investigator Dr Liam Burke, Lecturer in Bacteriology in the School of Medicine at University of Galway, said: "Given their proximity to humans and their presence in many popular bathing and recreation locations, such as city parks, lakes, harbours and coastal areas, there is potential for ongoing spread of drug-resistant opportunistic pathogens in swan faeces. Overall, this research underscores the interconnectedness of environmental, animal and human health. Our findings suggest that swans may be an under-recognised vector of AMR bacteria. "There is currently very little surveillance of AMR in wildlife. We propose that swans may represent a useful "sentinel" wildlife species for One Health monitoring of AMR, as they are already monitored by ringing in many countries." The study, published in the Science of the Total Environment, is available here. The study was funded by the European Union's Erasmus+ Programme, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Health Service Executive. A new directive set to be launched in Ireland in October 2024, could lead to 4,000 businesses in Ireland and their senior executives being personally liable and their organisations exposed to potential fines of up to €10 Million. The expanded Network and Information Security Directive (NIS2) is being implemented to ensure businesses classified as essential and important entities take appropriate measures to enhance their cyber vigilance and protect sensitive data. In response to these challenges, OpenSky, the business process automation specialists & Microsoft Solutions Partner for Data & AI who use their expertise to bring AI to the centre of digital transformations, have now launched a new Data Management and Governance service for public and private sector organisations. This new service by OpenSky, powered by Microsoft Fabric & Purview, applies a 'Data Fabric' approach as the strategy to connect, protect and make data accessible for organisations, aiming to ensure that they meet robust governance and regulatory compliance requirements. In addition their Data Fabric service allows organisations to build greater AI powered insights from connected data by breaking down internal data silos at scale across departments. Commenting on the new OpenSky offering which will address organisations concerns, Michael Cronin, managing director, said, "The NIS2 directive is reshaping how we approach data management in Ireland, both in the public and private sectors. It's an opportunity for us to lead by example, ensuring that our data strategies and AI implementations are secure, transparent, and aligned with the best practices in data governance." The NIS2 directive is an EU-wide legislation on cybersecurity that provides legal measures to increase the overall level of cybersecurity in the EU, and urgently puts pressure on public and private sector organisations to determine its impact on their current cybersecurity posture. The expanded NIS2 Directive is estimated to impact about 4,000 businesses in Ireland, which is significant considering less than 100 businesses in Ireland are currently impacted by NIS1. The expanded NIS2 brings new categories where organisations in scope are either directly involved in the provision of essential services or connected to their delivery. Roseanne Killeen, Acting CEO Ireland East Hospital Group, who has worked with OpenSky on enriching the access and integration of HR & Finance data in the hospital group said, "Healthcare faces major hurdles in making data accessible across various departments, and this is due to numerous disconnected data silos. "Navigating the challenges around governance and prevention of data breaches can seem like an arduous task but it doesn't have to be the case when you have access to all your data. We're not only in a position to govern our data but we're also now better equipped to provide accountability and transparency to the HSE." Based in Naas in Co Kildare, OpenSky has a rich heritage as an Irish digital transformation specialist providing AI powered IT solutions and consultancy services to both public sector and private organisations. OpenSky employs more than 110people, and this year the company celebrates its 20th anniversary, positioning them as one of Ireland's most established IT services businesses. See more stories here. After two years working for Giuseppe Pecorelli in Surrey at Pennyhill Park Hotel in Surrey, he returned to help open Sheen Falls Lodge in Kenmare as Deputy Manager. During his time in CLIFF he was also in charge of the running of the Cliff Townhouse in Dublin, a sister property to the hotel in Ardmore and was involved in the operation of the newest addition to the CLIFF family, Cliff at Lyons in Celbridge, Co Kildare, as Group General Manager. This episode is all about Irish romantic getaways and I picked three very special venues from Ireland's Blue Book that are all the epitome of romance with two castles with four poster beds and a Georgian town house. They are Barberstown Castle in Kildare, Tubbrid Castle in Kilkenny and 1 Pery Square in Limerick. My first guest is Ted Robinson from Barberstown Castle in Straffan, Co Kildare. This 13th century castle is famous as being the home of Eric Clapton from 1979 to 1985 when music royalty like Mick Jagger and Bob Dylan stayed. For romance there is nothing quite like an Irish country house break. Unless you go to a castle that is, and you have that castle all to yourself. The stunning and faithfully restored 15th century castle in Kilkenny called Tubbrid Castle only takes one booking at a time. You can have the three bedroomed medieval tower house all to yourself to sleep like a king and queen in a huge four poster bed.Tubbrid Castle has been lovingly restored by the late John Campion and his son Dr John Campion and the castle has been receiving rave reviews since it opened for guests a few years ago. The castle is the newest addition to the Blue Book collection and media like Forbes and the New York Times have been raving about it.Whenever I am looking for a hotel for a city break, I always pick the location first, ideally central and then look for a family run hotel with some history attached to it. That is exactly what No.1 Pery Square is in the heart of the Georgian Quarter in Limerick. The proprietor Patricia Roberts tells me all about the history of this magnificent Georgian town house in Limerick. For great romantic getaway deals check reland's Blue Book website https://www.irelands-blue-book.ie. I love the Blue Book because they are mostly family owned and run Irish Country House Hotels, Manor Houses, castles and restaurants. You really get to see Irish hospitality at its best and the properties are generally old country houses or castles, so you get a real sense of the history of the area you are staying in.Check out No.1 Pery Square in Limerick here https://oneperysquare.comCheck out Tubbrid Castle in Kilkenny here https://www.tubbridcastle.comcheck out Barberstown Castle here https://www.barberstowncastle.ieIf you haven't already I'd ask you to give me a follow on whichever platform you listen to your podcasts and you will be the first to get a new episode every Tuesday. Marching towards equality. On this week's podcast, Michael speaks to Brendan Fay, a decades-long L G B T activist, filmmaker, public speaker and founder of the hugely popular St Pats For All Parade which takes place every year in Sunnyside and Woodside in Queens. Brendan was born in Co Kildare and grew up in Drogheda. He moved to New York in the 1980s – mainly because he felt it was easier for him to come out as a gay man. However, Brendan soon found out that America too had its own problems with discrimination, which motivated him to join the movement for L G B T rights, same-sex civil marriage, AIDS awareness and human rights. In the late 1990s, Brendan, a proud Irish man, was arrested several times for attempting to march with a gay rights group at the Fifth Avenue St. Patrick's Day parade. In response, he then decided to form his own St. Patrick's Day parade in Queens that would be welcome to people all backgrounds and sexual orientation – hence the name St Pats For All. The parade has become a massive event in Queens and appears to be getting bigger every year. In this year's parade, which was held last Sunday, nearly two dozen politicians and city officials marched including Senator Chuck Schumer, and other city and state lawmakers. In 2016, Brendan's L G B T group -- the Lavender and Green Alliance became the first L G B T group to march in the St Patrick's Day Parade in Fifth Avenue parade.I spoke to Brendan after the St Pats for All Parade Sunday and he looks back on his life, his struggles coming out and how he established the parade. It's a truly inspirational interview. It was the first time Brendan wasn't involved in organizing the event having stepped down as co-chair. Brendan's website is brendanfay.net where you can find out more about Brendan's journey, his work and his documentary films. You can follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter @thelonghallpodcast – and 5 star reviews are always welcome!!All of our previous podcasts on www.TheLongHalPodcast.com where we publish a host of Irish American news and sports stories – including a detailed report on last Sunday's St Pats For all Parade which is packed with photos and videos.
