The morning crew was too polite to spell it out, so Matt did it after the close. Tuesday, May 19, 2026 — WTI settled $104.23 (+3%), Brent ~$111 (+~5%), and the Trump administration publicly admitted it called off an Iran bombing campaign yesterday. CENTCOM's Adm. Brad Cooper says he's ready to "execute a broad range of contingencies." Stocks got smoked, metals cratered, cattle bled on the board — and cash cattle didn't blink at $262.72 live / $411.56 dressed. This is not a watch-and-wait day. The whole macro picture is repricing around an Iran war about to escalate again, and your diesel bill, your fertilizer bill, and your feeder calf math just got rewritten between Friday's close and right now. In this episode: • Markets close — LE 247.18 (-1.94%), GF 363.85 (-1.01%), HE 102.10 (+12.88%), Corn 475.25 (+5.26%), Beans 1,210.25 (+3%), Meal -3%, Gold -4%, Silver -12.89%, Russell -4.09% • Lead story: Iran, $104 crude, and what it means for diesel ($5.65 retail), urea, and DAP • Cattle complex: cash holds, board sells — sale barn pulse from Clovis NM, Producers UT Salina, OKC West (with the on-the-fly correction), Producers TX, Billings MT, Torrington WY • Cattle on Feed setup heading into Friday's NASS report • Grains: corn ripping, meal selling — feedyard ration math you should run tonight • Drought: D3/D4 at 16.3% of monitored regions; Southeast at 81% D2+ • Disease wall: potato wart in PEI + Dectomax-CA1 screwworm EUA • Policy: S.785 American Beef Labeling Act cloture filed (MCOOL fight inside 30 days), S.1102 WOTUS markup, EV/hybrid registration fees, and a Thomas Massie eulogy • On This Day: T.E. Lawrence's motorcycle wreck (May 19, 1935), Mt. St. Helens (May 18–19, 1980), and the capture of Cynthia Ann Parker / birth of the Quanah Parker story (May 19, 1836) • Sports: JT Ginn's 8 no-hit innings undone in the 9th, Rashee Rice 30 days, Caitlin Clark grand marshal of the Indy 500, Avs–Knights WCF, and the Toy Story 5 conspiracy • Close: what Matt would do this week — top off diesel, book fall fertilizer, sell into cash strength, pay down operating notes, don't be the guy holding the bag at 6 PM Eastern when the next Iran headline drops Shout-out to the firefighters, farmers, and ranchers working the fires in SE Colorado, the OK/TX Panhandles, and SW Kansas. Tied — keep that disc moving. Cash is king. The packer is the only honest buyer. Tehran is writing your fuel bill this week. Friday's Cattle on Feed report lands at 2 PM Central — be ready. What should I wear today? Coffee or tea? Espresso or cappuccino? Work from home or go to the office? Our days are filled with questions."And one observation I made—with my clients, but also with myself—was that I increasingly use AI chatbots to get a decision. So I don't need to think."THE STORY OF CROESUS:Sixth century BC. The kingdom of Lydia. King Croesus, wealthy enough that 2,500 years later we still say "rich as Croesus."The Persian Empire is rising on his border. Should he attack first, or wait?Croesus tests every famous oracle. He gives every emissary the same instructions: on a specific day, ask what the king is doing. That day, Croesus does something deliberately bizarre—boils a tortoise and a lamb together in a bronze cauldron with a bronze lid.Only Delphi gets it right. He sends extraordinary gifts and asks his real question: should I attack the Persians? The Oracle answers: "If you cross the river Halys, a great empire will be destroyed."Croesus hears what he wants to hear. He marches. He is destroyed. The great empire that fell was his own."The Oracle was not wrong. The Oracle was useless. Because Croesus had not gone to Delphi to think. He had gone to Delphi for an answer. And once he had one, he stopped thinking."FRAME 1 — INTOLERANCE OF UNCERTAINTY (Carleton et al., 2007)Nick Carleton runs the anxiety lab at the University of Regina. He works with people who deal with uncertainty for a living—police, paramedics, firefighters.Intolerance of uncertainty is a deep, dispositional trait. Not pessimism. The inability to tolerate not knowing. One scale item captures it: "I'd rather know bad news than stay in a state of uncertainty."Carleton calls it transdiagnostic—it shows up across nearly every anxiety disorder. He has argued it may be the fundamental fear, evolutionarily ancient."It explains why we cannot leave the question alone. Why we will pay almost any price for an answer. Even the wrong one."FRAME 2 — COMPUTERS ARE SOCIAL ACTORS (Reeves & Nass, 1996)Two Stanford professors. The Media Equation. Clifford Nass died in 2013, age 55.Random flattery from a computer made participants rate the experience more positively—even when told the praise was random.Participants evaluated computers more favourably when they did the evaluation on the same computer. They were polite. To the computer's face. When asked afterwards if computers have feelings, every participant said no. But they had behaved as if the computers were people. Mindlessly."When ChatGPT says 'I think this might be a good approach,' it triggers social scripts millions of years older than computers. We are trusting it before we have decided to.""The Oracle at Delphi was a person speaking on behalf of a god. The Oracle on our laptop is a system speaking on behalf of nothing."FRAME 3 — ARTIFICIAL EPISTEMIC AUTHORITIES (Hauswald, 2025)Rico Hauswald, philosopher at TU Dresden. Social Epistemology, 2025.Human authorities—doctors, scientists, judges—are accountable. When they're wrong, the wrongness is visible.Benjamin Lange (Cambridge, 2025) names what's missing: AI lacks "epistemic failure markers.""When ChatGPT is wrong, it sounds exactly the same as when ChatGPT is right. The voice is the same. The confidence is the same. There is no signal."THE CLOSE:"Croesus knew his answer came from a source whose history could be tracked. We have a faster oracle, a more available oracle, a more confident-sounding oracle.""Whether we have a wiser one is a different question entirely."REFERENCES:Herodotus, Histories, Book 1.Carleton, R. Drawing on real-world examples from food, housing, medicine, and more, George reveals the patterns of consolidation, surplus destruction, and artificial shortages that keep society desperate and divided. He calls for recognition, documentation, and rebellion against this “scarcity weapon,” urging listeners to investigate local resources and demand the withheld plenty. Episode 216: The Sound of Protest in Morocco: Nass el Ghiwane and the Years of Lead (1970s-1990s) In her current project, Alessandra Ciucci is Associate Professor of Ethnomusicology at Columbia University in New York, posits that in order to understand the effectiveness of the songs of Nass el Ghiwane it is critical to examine their musicopoetic assemblage with its rich web of citations and intertextual references, and to acknowledge the force of the band's sound that Moroccans heard as “revolutionary” (thәuri) and with a “protest tone” (nәbra ḥtjajiya). She considers their songs as historical and emotional repositories of an era of profound transformation, as songs bearing witness to an era so marked by political violence and oppression that it came to be referred to as the “years of lead” and, at the same time, giving voice to collective hopes, dreams and aspirations. Ciucci is interested in the possibility that these songs offered in envisioning a different future in an oppressive reality and, just as importantly, the reasons for the musicians to choose the tools they used to capture the ears of a young generation. Alessandra Ciucci's research interests include: the music of Morocco, the Maghreb, the Mediterranean, sung poetry, popular music of the Arab World, music and migration and music and protest. Her first book, The Voice of the Rural: Music, Poetry and Masculinity among Migrant Moroccan Men in Umbria (Chicago University Press 2022), explores the significance and the endurance of a specific notion of the rural ('arubiya) among migrant Moroccan men in Italy. The Arabic translation of her writing on Moroccan professional female singer-dancers (shikhat) and on the musicopoetic genre ‘aiṭa, was published as a collection by the Edition La Croisée des Chemins in partnership with the Académie du Royaume du Maroc. She is currently at work on a new project tentatively titled Nass el Ghiwane: Popular Music and the Sound of Protest in Morocco (1970s-1990s), in which she delves into Nass el Ghiwane, the most influential group to forge a new musicopoetic language utilizing traditional Moroccan culture as a method of decolonization that also provided a sense of contemporary authenticity. Ciucci is the recipient of a number of grants and prizes, among which the Rome Prize in Modern Italian Studies (2018-19). This episode was recorded on July 14, 2023, at the Tangier American Legation Institute for Moroccan Studies (TALIM).  Recorded and edited by: Abdelbaar Mounadi Idrissi, Outreach Director at the Tangier American Legation Institute for Moroccan Studies (TALIM).

The photo world is filled with remarkable young and up-and-coming talents. They often don't get the visibility they deserve, so we created Next Frame—a new monthly series aiming to shine a light their way. These bite-sized episodes are equally inspired by the guests we speak with and the invaluable contributions of local creative arts programs that have played a key role in their development. We're launching this series with photographer, filmmaker, and boxing & music aficionado Josh Nass, an alumnus of Baltimore's Wide Angle Youth Media programs. From nailing his Photoshop skills while still in middle school to trading in his boxing gloves for a camera during college and beyond, Josh regales us with practical tips about both the successes and challenges all young creatives must face as they transition from trading pictures for access to molding media skills into a profitable career. Looking back on his early days chasing both music and fashion scenes, Josh notes, “Your main role as a photographer—especially with talent and famous people—you know, I thought I was just making them look cool, but I'm making them money. I'm marketing them for their next tour, for their current tour. Looking back, I've learned a thing or two about how to get users' attention online.” Guest: Josh Nass   Episode Timeline: 2:04: Baltimore/DC-based photographer Josh Nass talks about first picking up a camera to fill his time after hanging up his boxing gloves. 3:40: Leveraging social media to get on stage and photograph his favorite Caribbean singer, then trading free pictures for ongoing access. 7:25: Navigating one's comfort level as an up-and-coming photographer, plus making a distinction between comfort with gear and social ease with subjects and clients. 9:08: Making pictures of cool moments, creative editing decisions to draw out the cool factor, and being first to deliver the files are all key to Josh's success. 14:02: Street hustling at New York Fashion Week to gain access to photograph top artists and celebrities, and the tough lessons Josh learned in the process. 19:06: Josh's connection to Baltimore's Wide Angle Youth Media and the formative role their programs have played in his early photography success. 22:50: Being referred by Wide Angle for a Comcast commercial, and the backstory to what transpired behind-the-scenes.  29:49: Josh weighs future career options and whether he'll choose to pursue photography full time.  35:40: Essential advice for emerging photographers: Prioritize building your skills and don't overvalue your work early on. Plus, a look at Josh's first big paid gig for a Keke Palmer concert and marketing campaign.    Guest Bio: Josh Nass is a Baltimore/DC-based freelance photographer and a senior at the University of Maryland, College Park, where he's pursuing a bachelor's degree in information science. Dr. Nass provides an in-depth analysis of two concerning provisions in the 2025 House Appropriations Bill: Sections 453 and 507.  Section 453 prohibits funding for timely updates to product labels and safety recommendations, a critical issue given that successful lawsuits against chemical giant Bayer have often relied on labeling disputes. Dr. Nass explains the far-reaching implications of this rider for public health and safety. Additionally, Dr. Nass examines Section 507, which restricts government funding for the implementation or further study of a January 2025 EPA report. This report documented the toxic and carcinogenic effects of "forever chemicals" found in sewer sludge used as agricultural fertilizer, raising serious environmental and health concerns. Who in Congress is writing and supporting these sections?
