Steve Dveris Tom Simoneau has brought Steve Dveris, head of the Healdsburg Wine and Food Experience, to California Wine Country with Harry Duke and Dan Berger. Steve Jaxon is away again this week. The Healdsburg Wine and Food Experience takes place from May 18-21, 2023. Also in the studio today are Sarah Quider, VP of winemaking for Foley Family Wines and chef Crista Luedtke. The first wine is the 2022 Ferrari-Carrano Fumé Blanc labeled North Coast and which is mainly a Sonoma County product, with a little bit from Lake County and Mendocino County. They prune the vines so the grapes have a lot of sunlight, which gives more tropical characteristics. One third of the wine is aged in neutral barrels. Dan Berger describes a trace of fresh fennel in the aromatics. It is succulent without being sweet. Dan mentions the trees in the Ferrari-Carrano grounds. To go with this wine Crista Luedtke has made a beet salad. She will also make a mushroom and walnut paté, which is vegan. Crista has two restaurants in Guerneville, Boon and the new one, Brot. Boon will be featured at the HWFE. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Bottle Barn online for the coolest bargains on wine, beer and spirits. The next tasting is a Chalk Hill Chardonnay. The grapes grow in light-colored volcanic soil which gives some minerality. Dan describes it as rich, oily and seductive. It would go well with seafood in a cream sauce. Crista has paired it with her Moroccan carrots. She has a secret Moroccan sauce. They have a dressage arena on the property. As an accompaniment, they are also sampling the Bavarian style pub cheese from Brot, Crista's new restaurant, with some little pretzel bites. The Banshee Pinot Noir goes perfectly with it. Banshee Banshee has a little tasting room in Healdsburg, across the street from Valette. It has vinyl records and couches and a “lounge vibe.” They started the label to make a good Pinot Noir at an affordable price. It is a fruit forward Pinot Noir, to express the varietal. Banshee winemaker Alicia Sylvester was on California Wine Country last year, on this June 1, 2022 episode. There are over 140 wineries participating at the Healdsburg Wine and Food Experience. You have to be in wine country to get such a lineup that includes everything from small boutique wineries to great famous labels, from here and abroad. There is a car show, a tractor show, a new beer garden, spirits, cupcakes and more. Finally they taste a 2018 Silverado Vineyards Cabernet from Napa. It comes from two vineyards, in Stags Leap and Coombsville. Dan describes its balance between the Stags Leap character with the acidity from the cooler Coombsville. It reminds him of the 1986 and he thinks this one will age very well.

SOMM-Thing To Drink About - A Wine Podcast

Christi & Alex  get into a bargain with the devil & taste wine from Napa Valley's Youngest AVA. (BTW- An "AVA" is an American Vinticultural Area- which is a geographically defined chunk of land used for growing grapes that has been defined as such because of it's special attributes. The soil, the sun, the elevation, the shape of the land- all of what makes the grapes grown there special.)  All of which part of what makes this wine it's own, unique thing! So pop in the earbuds, pull open a bottle, and let's Drink Something AMAZING!Winemaker NotesAromas of fresh herbs, pungent cedar, and forest swirl in the glass with more delicate floral notes, black pepper, bittersweet chocolate, and crushed rock On the palate, a little brambly-vine quality clings to blackberry flavors, and warmly spiced dark plum is layered with fresh herbs for a lively, sweet-savory balance. Fine tannins yield satisfyingly rich, velvety textures, while vibrant acidity keeps you coming back for another sip.Faust Winery ( @FaustWines )At Faust, we seek to express the complexity of Cabernet Sauvignon and the diversity of the Napa Valley by sourcing from our estate vineyards in Coombsville and Rutherford as well as from small lots on Atlas Peak, Mount Veeder and Howell Mountain. Established in 1982, Etude was founded on the philosophy that winemaking begins in the vineyard, long before harvest, and that superior grape growing allows our winemakers to craft wines of exceptional varietal expression and finesse. This ethos remains unwavering as the winery continues to build upon its established legacy of exemplary Pinot Noir. The integration of this tenet allows for the continual cultivation of the highest-quality wines, reflective of the profound influences of the land and the seasons, as well as the hand of its stewards.Etude, which in French means “study,” specializes in a selection of aromatic whites and classical red varietals, such as Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. Though modeled after the best in Burgundy, Bordeaux and Alsace, these wines clearly speak to their New World origins, offering rich, concentrated fruit with elegant structure and an opulent mouthfeel for the reds, and lifted, delicate fruit with vibrant acidity and freshness for the whites. Our Estate Pinot Noirs, including a highly esteemed bottling made from rare heirloom selections and two single-vineyard offerings, are vinified from grapes grown on the Etude estate vineyards at Grace Benoist Ranch, nestled in the cool Carneros region. Other wines derived from our estate vineyards at Grace Benoist Ranch include our white wine selections of Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris. The fruit for our Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from superlative terroirs within the districts of Oakville, Rutherford and Coombsville, as part of the greater Napa Valley landscape.

According to a study released in May 2021, one in nine Americans have tried a poly relationship, and one in six would like to try one. In fact, according to a YouGov study, half of all Millennials do not want a "completely monogamous relationship." So what's the attraction to polyamory? Is it the thought of not having one sexual partner for the remainder of your life? Is it the prospect of sharing resources? Like being able to plunder more than one wine collection at a time? (That's what got me started). On this episode, I talk to Dr. Elisabeth Sheff, a sociologist who has been studying polyamory trends for over two decades. About Julien Growing up in the South of France afforded Julien the opportunity to develop a love for both the land and the sea. He was immersed in the vineyard at a young age, and also fell in love with surfing. Although he spent his childhood running through the vineyards of Provence with his cousins, shooting grapes at each other with a slingshot, his time cleaning the cellar as a young boy convinced him to follow a different course in school. As he studied agri-business in the Loire Valley, he always returned to winemaking each year to assist with the harvest. It was this continuous connection to the craft that eventually persuaded him to pursue a career as a winemaker. Dedicated to becoming a great winemaker, Julien garnered winemaking positions at some of Bordeaux's most noble wineries, including Lafite Rothschild and Smith Haut Lafitte. In 2003, Julien had the opportunity to intern in the US and he embraced it to the fullest. He returned to his family's winery in Provence helping them re-work operations, logistics, and engineering, as the estate was growing fast. He moved to Napa in 2006, working with Philippe Melka as his director of winemaking for eight years before launching his own projects, which include Fayard Winemaking and Covert Estate in Coombsville. Now with more than two decades of winemaking expertise, Julien Fayard is one of Napa Valley's most respected winemakers, producing California varietals with French finesse. He believes in producing wines with identity, exploiting what makes each one unique. Julien's wines are a pure expression of their terroir, highlighting the specificities and characteristics of the fruit, vineyard management, soil, and climate. He has a track record of building brands both in terms of quality and market presence. Julien earned his Master in Agri-Business from ESA France and his Master in Winemaking from Toulouse France. In 2011, he received his MBA from UC Davis. Today, Julien lives in Napa with his three children Emeline, Kian, and Maelle. He continues to surf weekly. About Just Pink JustPink!, makes your mouth water like you've been wandering through a desert for 40 days. It's a "serious" rosé, especially for the price—the kind that winemakers go crazy for—and is the only true blend on this list, made from syrah, grenache, and pinot noir. Fresh and bright, it has a strong presence of ruby grapefruit with a lingering, jolly rancher finish.WINEMAKER Julien Fayard COUNTRY United States REGION California --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/therosehourpodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/therosehourpodcast/support

A Virginia native, Martin was present at the inception of what is now considered one of that state’s premier wine producers, Boxwood Estate Winery, in 2005. As Executive Vice President of Winery Operations, Martin’s job was to oversee all facets of production, sales and marketing of Boxwood’s award-winning whites, rosés and Bordeaux-style red blends. Martin’s forward thinking led directly to Middleburg having its own wine identity separate from the more generic Virginia designation, making her well suited to again start from scratch with Oceano Wines. Jancis Robinson noted Martin’s marketing savvy in her book “American Wine.” Marbue Marke earned his enology degree from Davis and, subsequently, added to his academic resume with an MBA from Sonoma State University. His practical experience began at J Winery in Sonoma, followed by a series of moves, each adding another piece to the puzzle that is winemaking. At Cosentino Winery, he learned about the rarefied world of high-end Napa wines. He was then a barrel enologist at R.H. Philips. For two years, Marke was charged with cooperage studies, an offshoot field that many winemakers are not experienced in. During a stint at Benziger, he was immersed in that family’s heightened concern for soil and winemaking purity. From there, Marke made a seemingly counterintuitive jump to Gallo. He reasoned that it’s always a good idea to revisit the basics of one’s craft, and given Gallo’s depth and breadth of resources, it was the perfect place for him to hone all of the skills associated with the production process. But perhaps the most pivotal move he made, at least in terms of his future connection to Oceano, was his decision to sign on as John Caldwell’s winemaker. That Marke began working with Caldwell turned out to be prophetic for Rachel  . She met Marke by way of her very own connection to Caldwell. She sourced the plant material for Boxwood Estate Winery’s first vineyard block from him. Marke has since taken over as the Director of Winegrowing at Italics Winegrowers in Coombsville, one of Napa Valley’s cooler climes and another serendipitous similarity with Spanish Springs Vineyard. Now Trending on ICONICLIFE.COM Seven Best Gourmet Coffee Shops in the U.S. Six Coolest Drones In The World After years of regular visits to Napa, Julio and Amalia Palmaz purchased an old estate in Coombsville (in Napa’s southern reaches) and set down roots—in the form of vineyards—to create Palmaz Vineyards. While the estate’s 600 picturesque acres gracefully drape over Mt. George, only 60 are suited for the cultivation of grapes (particularly Cabernet Sauvignon). However, Julio and Amalia embraced the challenge of building a new winery from the ground up—and then some—with many of the winemaking facilities getting built in to the mountain. There was also an understanding among all members of the Palmaz family—which includes daughter Florencia, son Christian, daughter-in-law Jessica and, by extension, head winemaker Tina Mitchell, son and assistant winemaker Doug Mitchell, and consulting winemaker Mia Klein—that even if the scale of production was small and carefully planned (given the area‘s geological idiosyncrasies), the effort to create premium wines would be all encompassing, collaborative, and greater than the sum of its proverbial parts. In our interview with Christian Palmaz, he shares stories of the daily life of a family business in an idealic location and details how the fermentation tanks are uniquely engineered and paired with each parcel in the vineyard, adding it’s an approach that has not surprisingly inspired other wineries to inquire about implementing the breakthrough research in viticulture and enology into their operations. This episode features John Caldwell, the maverick, the grape-grower, the vine-smuggler, the clonal researcher, the winemaker, and the story-teller.  John didn't plan to start his own winery, and neither did he plan to plant grapevines on his property in Coombsville when he first bought it.  Today Caldwell Vineyard is a thriving winery and also continues to sell grapes to other wineries.  This episode starts a little slow--John didn't even realize that I was recording an audio podcast--and then delves into chaos.  It's not for the faint of heart, or the easily offended.  I'm sorry?  You're welcome?  Strap in for this one!   LINKS AND RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE Caldwell Vineyard, Napa Valley Dunn Vineyards, Howell Mountain, Napa Valley Pahlmeyer, Napa Valley A Guide for Grapevine Clones for Professionals, John's book (written with Philippe Melka) Thyme Guard virucide made from essential thyme oil extract This podcast is brought you by Musto Wine Grape Company.  Musto is the largest and oldest wine grape and juice distributor in New England, with their own vineyards in Suisun Valley, CA and long-standing contracts with growers in Lodi, Central Valley, Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino, and Washington State.
