On a Sunday morning in the spring of 1921, a small boy made a grim discovery as he played on a riverbank in the cotton country of rural Georgia: the bodies of two drowned men, bound together with wire and chain and weighted with a hundred-pound sack of rocks. Within days a third body turned up in another nearby river, and in the weeks that followed, eight others. And with them a deeper horror: all eleven had been kept in virtual slavery before their deaths. In fact, as America was shocked to learn, the dead were among thousands of Black men enslaved throughout the South in conditions nearly as dire as those before the Civil War.Hell Put to Shame tells the forgotten story of that mass killing and of the revelations about peonage, or debt slavery, that it placed before a public self-satisfied that involuntary servitude had ended at Appomattox more than fifty years before.By turns police procedural, courtroom drama, and political exposé, Hell Put to Shame also reintroduces three Americans who spearheaded the prosecution of John S. Williams, the wealthy plantation owner behind the murders, at a time when white people rarely faced punishment for violence against their Black neighbors. The remarkable polymath James Weldon Johnson, newly appointed the first Black leader of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, marshaled the organization into a full-on war against peonage. Johnson's lieutenant, Walter F. White, a light-skinned, fair-haired, blue-eyed Black man, conducted undercover work at the scene of lynchings and other Jim Crow atrocities, helping to throw a light on such violence and to hasten its end. And Georgia governor Hugh M. Dorsey won the statehouse as a hero of white supremacists—then redeemed himself in spectacular fashion with the “Murder Farm” affair. This is a story that remains fresh and relevant a century later, as the nation continues to wrestle with seemingly intractable challenges in matters of race and justice. And the 1921 case at its heart argues that the forces that so roil society today have been with us for generations.  Joining me to discuss his book, HELL PUT TO SHAME: The 1921 Murder Farm Massacre and the Horror of America's Second Slavery—Earl Swift. Welcome ladies, germs, and people of all genders! Join Taylor & Curtis as we discuss films set in the most haunting location of all....the suburbs! We discuss what makes the suburbs such a perfect setting for a horror movie (the term "liminal spaces" is used) before diving into to two very interesting examples of suburban horror!! We could have chosen literally a hundred movies (seriously there are so many horror films set in the suburbs!!) but we chose two oddly similar, sweaty movies!! Why are the suburbs so scary, specifically to Americans? What themes are common in suburban horror films? What would you do if you found a human ear lying in a field? Would it be scary if someone had their boobs and butt on the same side of their body? Custom House is proud to publish ACROSS THE AIRLESS WILDS: The Lunar Rover and the Triumph of the Final Moon Landings by New York Times bestselling author Earl Swift. In this impeccably reported and beautifully written narrative, Swift rediscovers the unjustly overshadowed story of the final three Apollo missions, which deployed an extraordinary invention that pushed human exploration to unsurpassed limits. He draws on dozens of interviews and a year of in-depth research to serve up an enthralling blend of scientific insight, vibrant characters, and compelling storytelling. With this summer marking the 50th anniversary of Apollo 15 (July 25-August 7), it's the perfect time to revisit these achievements. And rovers are once again in the news as the Perseverance rover plays a starring role in the current Mars expeditions, which Swift contends are the legacy of the Apollo LRVs, still pushing the bounds of exploration and discovery fifty years later. Images of the Apollo 11 moon landing are indelibly etched into the American consciousness. When Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to land and walk on the lunar surface, it was an astonishing triumph of both imagination and technology, which thrilled and inspired a world watching live on television. But according to Swift, the greatest achievements of our lunar adventure came later, on missions that are only dimly recalled today. In fact, Swift argues, the last three Apollo missions-distinguished by the use of the revolutionary lunar roving vehicle-built significantly on the first landings, taking mankind to its very furthest and farthest extremes. While Armstrong and Aldrin trod a sliver of flat lunar desert smaller than a football field, Apollos 15, 16, and 17 each commanded a mountainous area the size of Manhattan. Though now footnotes in history, they were truly the pinnacle of human exploration. Swift's last book, the widely acclaimed Chesapeake Requiem (2018), brilliantly illuminated the global stakes of climate change through the prism of the tiny, disappearing island of Tangier, VA, and was named a best book of the year by the Washington Post, NPR, Outside, Science Friday, Smithsonian, and more. It was praised as "a masterful narrative of place, people, and nature" (Christian Science Monitor), "a provocative and respectful study of a culture that may soon be lost" (Esquire), and "intimate, meticulously reported and captivating" (Washington Post). Now, Swift brings to life another remarkable community-the engineers and astronauts who designed and operated the Lunar Roving Vehicle. In this fast-moving exploration, Swift puts the reader alongside the men who dreamed of the rover, designed it, troubleshot its flaws, and drove it on the lunar surface.

While everyone has their own personal list, we could all maybe agree on some of the most iconic cars ever made. The VW Beetle, the 1968 Ford Mustang, the 1960 Corvette, the 57 Chevy, the Porsche 911, The 1955 Mercedes gull-wing, the DeLorean, and just for good measure, the 1963 Aston Martin. But equally important is a vehicle that gets little attention, All of its models together only traveled under 100 miles. When it was built it was over budget, over schedule, and was only a two-seater. It was the lunar rover vehicle that was a part of Apollo 15, 16, and 17. Without it, we'd know a lot less about the moon, about our own planet, and even the solar system. Not bad for a car that was bare bones and electrified, long before Elon Musk was born. That's the story that Earl Swift tell in his new book Across the Airless Wilds: The Lunar Rover and the Triumph of the Final Moon Landings.   My conversation with Earl Swift:

Scientists believe Tangier Island, in the Virginia waters of the Chesapeake Bay, could vanish within the next 25 years. Two-thirds of Tangier's land mass has disappeared since the time of the Civil War, and in recent years sea-level rise caused by global warming took more acres from the island. Fewer than 500 people remain there. Many of them voted for Donald J. Trump, share his rejection of climate change as the reason for their existential challenge and insist that a seawall around the island would save it from further ----wave erosion.---- The deeply religious islanders have frequently been in the media spotlight, often the subject of derision and ridicule for their climate change denials and support of Trump. Journalist and author Earl Swift spent more than a year on Tangier, learning about the island way of life and the work of the watermen who've harvested blue crabs and oysters for generations. Swift has written an elegiac book about the place and the people who could well become the Chesapeake's first climate change refugees. The book is, ----Chesapeake Requiem: A Year with the Watermen of Vanishing Tangier Island,---- published by Harper Collins. In this episode: A talk with Swift following his appearance at the 2018 Baltimore Book Festival; excerpts of a CBS News report, a Stephen Colbert monologue and ----Full Frontal with Samantha Bee.----

Tangier Island, Virginia, has been home for eight generations to a unique community of now some 470 hardy souls, many of whom make their living harvesting the region’s prized blue crab. But their island home -- a barely 2-acre sliver of mud and sand and grass in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay -- is fast disappearing beneath the waters. Whether the culprit is erosion by the Bay’s relentless currents, as most Islanders believe, or the rising sea levels scientists say have been triggered by global climate change, the outlook for Tangier Island and its people is bleak. Today, Midday senior producer and guest host Rob Sivak spends the hour with Virginia-based writer Earl Swift, a long-time reporter at the Virginia-Pilot who has spent more than 30 years writing about the Chesapeake region, and who has circumnavigated the Bay in his kayak. The Chesapeake is the setting of Swift's newest book -- his seventh -- which chronicles the daily lives and hopes of the Tangier Islanders, against a backdrop of environmental and political forces that seem beyond their control. The book is called Chesapeake Requiem: A Year with the Watermen of Vanishing Tangier Island, published by Dey Street Books (an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers).

On this episode, we’re rebroadcasting an interview Matt Tullis did with Earl Swift in November 2014. At the time, Swift’s book “Auto Biography: A Classic Car, An Outlaw Motorhead, and 57 Years of the American Dream” had just been published. Swift has a new book out now. “Chesapeake Requiem: A Year With the Watermen of Vanishing Tangier Island” was published by Harper Collins, and is getting rave reviews. Auto Biography is also a fantastic book. It tells the life story of a 1957 Chevy that, at the beginning of the book, is falling apart. He also delves deep into the life of the current owner, Tommy Arney. Arney had a brutal childhood. He dropped out of school in the fifth-grade, and lived a life of crime. But had also become a somewhat successful and controversial businessman. The story of this car started as a five-part series for the Virginian-Pilot, where Swift had been a reporter for many years. In this interview, he talked about the differences between reporting for newspaper work and reporting for a book project. Swift is a former Fulbright fellow in New Zealand, and is currently a residential fellow of the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.

Climate change, global warming, conservation, pollution are at the heart of the conversation when Halli visits with two authors who have spent years studying the subjects, Susan Hand Shatterly whose delightful new book is SEAWEED CHRONICLES, A WORLD AT THE WATER'S EDGE, and with journalist Earl Swift, whose new book is the riveting CHESAPEAKE REQUIEM, A YEAR WITH THE WATERMEN OF VANISHING TANGIER ISLAND, the podcast posted 3 pm ET at Halli Casser-Jayne dot com.For much of the past two years, award-winning journalist Earl Swift lived and reported on a tiny island in Virginia. The resulting book, CHESAPEAKE REQUIEM, A YEAR WITH THE WATERMAN OF VANISHING TANGIER ISLAND, is an elegiac portrait of an isolated community, a sweeping natural history of an extraordinary ecosystem, and a timely meditation on dire environmental realities that extend far beyond the shores of Tangier -- which seems likely to succumb first among U.S. towns to the effects of climate change. First mapped by Jon Smith in 1608, settled during the Revolution, the tiny sliver of mud and marsh is home to 470 hardy people who live with one foot on the twenty-first century and another in times long passed. They are separated from their countrymen by twelve miles of often tempestuous water -- water that for generations has made Tangier a chief source for the prized Chesapeake Bay blue crab. But the very water that has long sustained Tangier now erases it day by day. Experts believe that barring heroic intervention by the federal government, islanders will soon be forced to abandon their homes. And the question remains should the federal government save this tiny island or surrender it to the sea. After all, thousands of American communities are being swallowed up by the sea. The American government can't save them all.In SEAWEED CHRONICLES Susan Hand Shetterly pulls back the curtain on the hidden world of seaweed. Did I say seaweed? Yes that is correct. Seaweed, not a weed at all, is one sexy little algae. It is ancient and basic, a testament to the tenacious beginnings of life on earth and “Why wouldn't seaweeds be a protean life source for the lives that have evolved since?” Shetterly asks in her new book small in size and large in lyrical prose. Shetterly explores all the wonders of the natural world anew through a richly informative and astonishingly elegant storytelling. Through her own research and through interviews, she offers a look into the extraordinary life cycle of seaweed, teaching readers about its role in local environments and its interconnected global significance. Shetterly also introduces us to the people and communities that depend on seaweed—and how they are working to protect this critical natural resource. Most importantly, Shetterly examines the big questions of conservation that have come to light. “What must remain wild for the health of the planet, and what can we responsibly take, as we face climate change and diminishing natural resources?” she asks. Note, it's almost impossible to go through a day without encountering seaweed somewhere in your life, as you will soon discover.Climate change, global warming, the environment, conservation, seaweed, Tangier Island, Donald Trump the subjects of The Halli Casser-Jayne Show the podcast posted at Halli Casser-Jayne dot com.

Earl Swift is a veteran journalist and author of non-fiction books. His latest book Auto Biography: A Classic Car, an Outlaw Motorhead, and 57 Years of the American Dream, had its genesis as a feature piece he wrote in 2004 about the many owners of a 1957 Chevrolet station wagon. The outlaw motorhead in question is one Tommy Armey, whose tumultuous upbringing contributed to his being the meanest brawler in the Virginia Beach metro area, as well as an entrepreneur whose regard for legal restrictions was minimal at best.
