You Can Use Fishing Nets To Make Rad Gear

The GearJunkie Podcast

Editor's Note: In this episode of the GearJunkie Podcast, we sit down with Bureo Co-Founder & CEO David Stover. Bureo converts plastic ocean pollution into recycled fibers and consumer goods, with major partners like Patagonia, Trek Bikes, Costa Sunglasses, and more. Whether he was surfing, free-diving, swimming, you name it — David Stover kept finding plastic trash in the ocean. As someone who loves the water, it hit him really hard. “You might just drive by it on the road,” the Bureo Co-founder and CEO said. But as a surfer, Stover often received a daily reminder of the worsening problem. “You take it really personally,” he added. Founded in 2013, Bureo is known for its unique approach to recycling and repurposing discarded fishing nets — a major contributor to ocean plastic — into high-quality products. The company's proprietary material, NetPlus, is currently being leveraged by major brands like Patagonia, Trek Bikes, Costa Sunglasses, and more in a variety of product offerings. (Photo/Bureo) A Mission is Born Stover grew up surrounded by water, on Block Island, Rhode Island. He never considered himself an environmentalist — Being a good steward to the land was just the right thing to do. But as he and his co-founders noticed more and more debris in the water, they felt the need to take action. “Once you start seeing plastic in the ocean, you can’t not see it,” he emphasized. After consulting with leading experts and absorbing many firsthand, anecdotal experiences, it became obvious to Stover that a significant percentage of waste was coming from the fishing industry — especially netting. (Photo/Bureo) Years later, Bureo is converting this type of waste into consumer products, like jackets, sunglasses, hats, shorts, even skateboards. In fact, the brand's first product was the Minnow Cruiser Skateboard. “We were building a niche skateboard company, and to us, that was exciting!” Stover remembered. “One of the biggest takeaways from our first products was that people were more on board with the mission of converting these nets into a product that they were necessarily skateboarding.” Slow and Steady Growth Bureo is on a much more modest growth trajectory than other successful young companies. In its first year, when the brand was just making skateboards, it converted 10 tons of material, which amounts to roughly half a shipping container of nets. A promising start, but not enough to make a serious dent in reducing global waste. However, by 2023, the company was converting over 1650 tons of material, roughly 80 to 100 shipping containers of plastic netting. The scale of the operation is growing exponentially, but it’s still just a drop in the bucket. (Photo/Bureo) As Stover explained, recycling alone will not solve the plastic problem, and a multi-pronged approach is needed, including reducing plastic consumption and exploring alternative materials.“We have to stop making as much new plastic as we’ve been making every year in order to really start winning that battle,” he reiterated. “Once these producers of new plastic are really focusing their investments and facilities and equipment on regenerative materials or alternative materials, the real change will come.” What is NetPlus? Bureo’s focus is on collecting and recycling fishing nets, but they also aim to address the end-of-life disposal of products made from these materials. To that end, in 2014, the fledgling company caught the eye of Patagonia, which took interest in the brand's early technology and mission. With the investment of the much-larger outdoor apparel company, Bureo committed to a path of product-oriented R&D that has culminated in Bureo's proprietary NetPlus material. (Photo/Bureo) Found in some of Patagonia's most popular products (Baggies, anyone?), NetPlus is made from 100% post-consumer recycled fishing nets. And while that seems impressive, the company also partners directly with fishing communities to collect their end-of-life fishing net waste. These partnerships divert a large flow of pollution away from these coastal communities, ultimately preventing substantial amounts of plastic from reaching the open ocean. Working For Change Stover still surfs often, and despite the overwhelming odds against his endeavor, he still feels optimistic during those sessions that he's on the right course and others will take up the cause in the future. Over the years, Bureo has made significant strides in achieving its mission. The company has successfully established partnerships with fishing communities, incentivizing the proper disposal of fishing nets and preventing them from becoming ocean waste. (Photo/Bureo) Moreover, Bureo has expanded its product line to include a variety of sustainable goods, such as skateboards, sunglasses, and other lifestyle products, all made from recycled materials. But more than those things, Bureo’s innovative approach has positioned the company as a trailblazer in the fight against ocean plastic pollution and providing a template for other, future companies that seek to get involved in the mission. “When it’s only doom and gloom — it’s really hard to see what difference you can make,” Stover concluded. ”But when you look at the youth … I see that generation taking [pollution] really personally. … that gives me hope that we’re inspiring the next generation to be more responsible.” The post You Can Use Fishing Nets To Make Rad Gear appeared first on GearJunkie.

Pepperoni rolls have been a West Virginia favorite since the 1920's. Using a recipe that had been in the family for generations, third generation owner, Samuel A. The FASTER WV program supports business development in West Virginia through free entrepreneurship classes and mini grants. “There's a clear need for a bicycle shop here.” Nik Salvo said, citing there are no shops for cyclists in Braxton County along the Rails to Trails foot and bike path. The shop rents E-bikes and mountain bikes; is available for repairs and sells new and used bicycles. Soon a dealership for new bicycles with TREK Bikes will be added to the shop.  The bicycle shop also rents kayaks for use in area waters such as Sutton Lake and Elk River. Braxxie's will be offering paired packages such as “Paddle Down, Pedal Up,” a round trip day activity paddling down the Elk River and cycling back via the Rails to Trails path along the river.  Read more: https://www.bcn-news.com/2023/05/16/first-elk-river-rails-to-trails-business-opens-in-gassaway/ #3 – From NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC – Lodgings that commune in some way with nature are more popular than ever, post-pandemic, with a record 58 million American and Canadian households camping or “glamping” in 2022.  One unique camping destination is the Thorny Mountain Fire Tower in West Virginia. Travelers reserve up to a year in advance to stay overnight at the top of this 65-foot-tall fire tower amid the purple mountains and wooded expanses of Seneca State Forest. It's a 69-step climb to the refurbished 1930s structure, which was built to accommodate rangers who scanned the surrounding Greenbrier Valley for forest fires.  Today, the perch hosts up to four people a night during warmer months. This is far from glamping: you'll snooze on a cot, and the bathrooms are down the stairs at a nearby ranger station. But guests can luxuriate in 365-degree views of sunrise and sunset from wraparound windows. There's a demographic that a lot of people don't know exists. That demographic is gentlemen in the inner city who are extremely intelligent, have high grades, have massive potential, want to go to college, and be super successful. Two issues are standing in the way of this demographic achieving that success. The first issue is that they don't have access to the community that will help them become that successful. And because they don't have access to that community, they also don't have access to those powerful first experiences; the second issue.A powerful first experience is doing something you'd never thought you would do for the first time in a place that you never thought you would be in for the first time.Kenneth Chabert knows firsthand how much power first experiences have.Kenneth has a passion for communicating big ideas in very little time through the use of conversational intelligence and authentic storytelling. While working at Alex and Ani, he was known as the Prezi Master, one of only twenty-five experts in the world in Prezi. After starting a consulting practice, Kenneth worked with companies such as Trek Bikes, Amgen, Amica, and Burson-Marsteller in presentation design and authentic storytelling. In 2016, Kenneth founded the Gentlemen's Retreat, which teaches inner-city youth the art of being gentlemen through the use of emotional and conversational intelligence. They experience anything and everything a Gentlemen does - from staying in mansions to eating at some of the nicest restaurants, and are led through powerful workshops that enable them to get into top colleges and universities around the country such as Brown, Cornell, and Wake Forest University. The program has recently expanded into Montana where Kenneth curated Powerful First Experiences that give the Gentlemen experiential learning opportunities while expanding their networks.Kenneth coined the term "Powerful First Experiences." These types of experiences help people develop new levels of confidence and understanding of themselves and bridges the gap between people from different environments because PFEs lead to building empathy, better storytelling, creating larger and more diverse networks, and fostering a larger view of the world.Kenneth speaks around the world about powerful first experiences. He was featured as one of the Brave ones at Leadercast, was a TED Resident during Spring 2019, spoke at HATCH, and was a presenter at Kinnernet, and is part of the Nexus Global community. In this episode, Kenneth unpacks the model of the Gentlemen's Retreat and how impactful it is for all involved.Listen to this episode and learn about:Struggling with hearing praise (4:22)Kenneth giving credit and thanks to all of his Gentlemen (G's) (5:57)How to paint a compelling story (9:52)What the Gentlemen's Retreat is all about (14:51)Being a great partner for the Gentlemen's Retreat (20:19)How Kenneth sustains and grows the Gentlemen's Retreat (25:49)What's next for Kenneth and the G's (35:19)LinksConnect with Kenneth on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/kchabert/The Gentlemen's Retreat - https://www.gentlemensretreat.org

Kathryn Bertine is an author, athlete, activist and documentary filmmaker. During her pro career in cycling, she was a three-time Caribbean Champion, six-time national champion of St. Kitts and Nevis (SKN) and raced five years on pro circuit  with four UCI domestic and World Tour teams Colavita, Wiggle-Honda, BMW and Cylance Pro Cycling. Now retired from professional racing, Bertine serves as Trek’s Ambassador for Equality in Cycling. Off the bike, she is a filmmaker, activist, journalist and author of three nonfiction books, All the Sundays Yet to Come, As Good As Gold, and The Road Less Taken. From 2006 through 2012, Bertine was a columnist, author and senior editor for ESPN. When she pitched a documentary film on women’s pro cycling to ESPN in 2012, they rejected the proposal. So Bertine decided she would make it herself. After a two-year labor of love and crowdsourcing adventures, in 2014, HALF THE ROAD: The passion, pitfalls and power of women’s professional cycling was released. It won five film festivals, debuted in 16 nations, scored international distribution and successfully brought the hammer down on the corruption and sexism in sports. Half the Road is now available on iTunes, Vimeo, Amazon Prime and DVD. Five years later, she continues to receive royalties on a film ESPN said no one would watch.  As an advocate for equality in women’s sports, Bertine then started the social activism movement Le Tour Entier in an effort to bring parity to women’s professional road cycling, starting with the Tour de France. She and her team succeeded, and women’s field was included in 2014 with the addition of La Course by Tour de France. In 2017, she founded and serves as CEO for Homestretch Foundation, which provides free housing to female professional athletes struggling with the gender pay gap. Bertine was featured on the cover of Bicycling Magazine and profiled in Outside Magazine for her platforms of implementing change in the world.  As an activist, Bertine continues to serve as a public speaker/lecturer on equality and advocacy. She shares her journey and her message—that through passion, disruption, opportunity and focus, anything is possible and we’re all capable of effecting change—with corporations, universities and other professional outlets. She is currently at work on her fourth book. He describes why the bike can solve many of the world's problems, and where he hopes it will lead us next. While discussing his early life, Gary takes us up close and personal with some of the biggest names of the 1960's hippie movement, including what it was like to witness the Altamont incident involving The Hell's Angels and The Rolling Stones. And of course, they discuss the intricacies of mustache maintenance, when even Payson is forced to admit that Gary's legendary facial hair cannot be rivaled.

Jim Herrington is a photographer whose portraits of celebrities including Benny Goodman, Willie Nelson, The Rolling Stones, Cormac McCarthy, Morgan Freeman and Dolly Parton have appeared on the pages of Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, Esquire, GQ, Outside and Men’s Journal as well as on scores of album covers for more than three decades. He has photographed international ad campaigns for clients such as Thule, Trek Bikes, Gibson Guitars, and Wild Turkey Bourbon. For nearly two decades, he worked on a portrait series of early-to-mid 20th Century mountain climbing legends. The result is the recently published 'The Climbers', a collection of sixty black-and-white photographs that document these rugged individualists, including the likes of Royal Robbins, Reinhold Messner, Yvon Chouinard, and Riccardo Cassin. Between the 1920s and 1970s, these determined men and women used primitive gear along with their considerable wits, talent, and fortitude to tackle unscaled peaks around the world. In these images, Herrington has captured their humanity, obsession, intellect, and frailty. The book, published in October 2017, won the Grand Prize at the 2017 Banff Book Awards, as well as the Mountaineering History Award. www.theclimbersbook.comHerrington co-produced the Jerry Lee Lewis episode for the HBO/Cinemax series ‘Mike Judge Presents: Tales from the Tour Bus’ that premiered September 2017.Herrington’s photography has been exhibited in solo and group gallery shows in New York City, Los Angeles, Washington DC, Nashville, Milwaukee, and Charlotte, and is in numerous private collections. I begin the IRONMAN© Louisville series with my friend and Professional Triathlete Sam Long. The race was cut short in the swim to a little less than a mile and it was raining mostly all day. This made for a mentally challenging day for the competitors and from a preparation standpoint of what athletes should wear on the course. The tactics he used to stay warm and somewhat dry is worth listening to and taking note. One of the biggest takeaways is how not to allow negative thought enter your mind when times are tough and some ways to deal with the negative thoughts. His 2017 season was impacted by a severe hip dislocation at a local Fort William race and he was off the bike for months. He eventually returned to racing at the Lenzerheide World Cup DH, significantly earlier than expected. With the 2018 World Cup downhill season just a few weeks a way, I was stoked to get Gee on The Inside Line to discuss the upcoming season, racing in general and what makes him tick. -gordo

In this edition we're looking at the impact of the consumer direct online business model on the bike industry. With the growth of online brands such as Canyon, consolidation of online retailers with Wiggle's acquisition of Chain Reaction, and both Trek and Giant implementing hybrid click and collect services - where does this leave the rest of the industry and in particular the increasingly challenged brick and mortar retailer?  We're joined by 2 guests from both sides of the consumer direct debate; Brendan Quirk, founder of Competitive Cyclist and now President of Rapha North America, and Eric Bjorling, Brand Communications Director with Trek Bikes.
