A community organizer and wellness activist, Kelli is recognized across communities for her inspired work to bridge transformational practice with social justice. In this conversation with community organizer, wellness activist and author, Kerri Kelly, we talk about the perpetual and often unspoken trauma present in our country due to the systems in place that have created and sustain a health, education, wealth, and wellness gap where some are able to seemingly thrive and others are given so little. We also talk about about what it does to us to be on the privileged side of that chasm and the ways it trains us to be isolated, numbed out, scarcity focused, and lonely. We also discuss an evolving definition of the word wellness and the importance of the agency to decide what that word means for us.  Kerri is the founder of CTZNWELL, a movement that is democratizing wellbeing for all. She's been teaching yoga for over 20 years and is known for making waves in the wellness industry by challenging norms, disrupting systems and mobilizing people to act.  A community organizer, wellness activist and author of the recently released book American Detox: The Myth of Wellness and How We Can Truly Heal, Kerri is recognized across communities for her inspired work to bridge transformational practice with social justice. She is a powerful facilitator, TED speaker and is the host of the prominent podcast, CTZN. Today I connected with Kerri Kelly, Author of American Detox and Founder of CTZN WELL. I recently discovered this amazing human being by watching her IG live with my favorite yoga teachers, Seane Corn. Her book has really opened by eyes to the world of wellness and the part I play in it. We chatted on her book and her journey to writing it. Kerri is currently doing a book tour for it and will be in Atlanta this Fall. In American Detox, organizer, yoga activist, wellness disruptor, and CTZNWELL founder Kerri Kelly sounds the wake-up call. It's time to commit to the radical work of unlearning the toxic messages we've been fed–to resist, disrupt, and dream better futures of what wellness really means. In our uncertain and chaotic world, it's easy to imagine how hard we're all trying to feel well. In fact, there's a trillion-dollar wellness industry that is capitalizing on, perhaps even exploiting, our deep yearning to feel whole, steady and well. But it begs the question: what do we really need to feel well? And who has access to these things and who does not? These are just a few of the questions author and activist Kerri Kelly unpacks in this week's interview and in her provocative book, American Detox: The Myth of Wellness and How We Can Truly Heal.      Guest Bio Kerri Kelly is an activist, wellness disruptor and the founder of CTZNWELL, a movement that is democratizing well-being for all. Kerri Kelly September 11th changed life for all of us, but for Kerri Kelly the impact was especially personal. In the aftermath of that event Kerri upended her life and went on a search for wellness. What she found was not what she expected and, once again, the trajectory of her life was changed. In her new book, American Detox: The Myth of Wellness and How We Can Truly Heal, and in this conversation, Kerri explores the ways in which our culture of wellness perpetuates systems that are deeply unwell. She leads us in a conversation that helps us find our way towards the deep, connected wellness that nourishes us all and away from individualistic focus that keeps us stuck in unhealthy comparison and competition. I couldn't put Kerri's book down and then, when we spoke, I wanted to talk to her for hours more.  Our distorted ideas of wellness hurt us all, and those ideas are so deeply embedded it can be hard to even see them. Kerri pulls back the curtain and gives us a path out, a path towards true healing. Her book is out now and I can't say enough about how important a book I think it is. Listen to our conversation, read her book, and find your way to the healing that we so deeply desire.  For a written transcript of this conversation click here. About Kerri Kelly: Kerri Kelly, is the founder of CTZNWell, a movement that is democratizing wellbeing for all. A descendent of generations of firemen and first responders Kerri has dedicated her life to kicking down doors and fighting for justice. She has been teaching yoga for over 20 years. She is a community organizer, wellness activist, and author of American detox, the myth of wellness and how we can truly heal. Kerri is also recognized across communities for her inspired work to bridge transformational practice with social justice. Her leadership has inspired a movement that is actively organizing around issues of racial and economic justice, healthcare as a human right civic engagement and more. Kerri is a powerful facilitator, TED speaker, and is the host of the prominent podcast citizen, that is spelled CTZN. You can learn more about her work at KerriKelly.co. Three Actions: 1) Interrogate yourself. Be relentlessly curious about what you've been taught, how you've been shaped and indoctrinated by dominant stories and dominant narratives and cultures, and how that's holding you back from your own wholeness. So be curious about that. And how that's a part of a larger system, right, how you're a part of a larger system.  2) Locate yourself inside that system. What is your place, and proximity? We're all impacted and implicated in different ways. And I want to just say different and disproportionate, I feel like I have to say that as a white bodied woman with so much privilege. So it's really important for us to both take responsibility for our part in this mess. And also see ourselves as part of the solution, right? So it's like, locate yourself so that you can step into your right role and responsibility. 3) Engage in collective action, get political, work with other people, line up in solidarity with organizations who are on the frontlines of the many issues that we are navigating right now. Because personal solutions are not going to solve the many problems, the many systemic and collective problems that we're facing. And so it's really important for folks to see their practice beyond the cushion, and to see wellness as a radical political act, as we work to create the conditions where everybody can be well. Conversations with a Wounded Healer

My guest Kerri Kelly landed on the perfect summation for this episode: “It's gonna be juicy y'all!” And it is, since our discussion centers on whiteness. Ha––leave it to whiteness to center itself here, there, everywhere. In this instance, however, whiteness and the cacophony of capitalism that almost always accompanies it, is drowned out by Kerri's challenging, meaningful call-in. And she keeps that volume turned way up. In her new book American Detox: The Myth of Wellness and How We Can Truly Heal, Kerri confronts the toxic systems (founded on whiteness) that have commodified wellness and prohibit everyone (including white folks) from enjoying genuine well-being.  What qualifies her to make such a case? Well, Kerri is the founder of CTZNWELL, a movement that's democratizing well-being for all and a yoga instructor with 20+ years of experience. She's well-known for making waves in the wellness industry by challenging norms, disrupting systems and mobilizing people to act. She's dedicated her life to kicking down doors and fighting for justice, traits she's inherited from a long line of first-responder ancestors.  Now that I see the lie of white supremacy everywhere (Perfectionism! Productivity! Individualism!), I recognize how thoroughly indoctrinated I am in the system and the harm caused by my own mistake. That repeated realization is tiresome, by design. White supremacy is engineered to keep us severed from self-discovery and the will to continually question and call out. This is challenging, lifetime work.  GUEST BIO Kerri Kelly is the founder of CTZNWELL, a movement that is democratizing well-being for all. Patrick Tsang interviews the co-founders of CTZN Cosmetics, three sisters Aleena, Aleezeh and Naseeha Khan. CTZN Cosmetics is a new-age makeup brand founded by the Khan sisters identifying themselves as third-culture kids, with their diverse backgrounds of being born in the U.S. raised in the U.A.E. with Pakistani ethnicity. Aleena, Aleezeh, and Naseeha are currently based between London and Dubai. The CTZN story came to fruition when founders Aleena, Aleezeh, and Naseeha went shopping for cosmetics at a major beauty retailer and realized that not a single model in mainstream beauty campaigns looked like, better yet, represented them. Models with ‘middle brown' skin tones were hardly ever Southeast Asian or Middle Eastern. Beauty campaigns aside, the same issues were prevalent in beauty brands' product formulations, where certain skin tones and undertones are often not considered. The CTZN founders soon realized that many of their friends of color felt the same way about their demographics being underrepresented in industries such as beauty and fashion. The conversation then evolved when Aleena, Aleezeh, and Naseeha noticed that the beauty industry's lack of diversity spans way beyond skin tones and gender. The male demographic is often unacknowledged in the cosmetics industry despite being a significant percentage. The mission became clear to the founders: to truly be an inclusive makeup brand, CTZN Cosmetics needed to be genderless, catering to all skin tones. CTZN Cosmetics is also proudly 100% vegetarian, cruelty-free, paraben-free, and talc-free. Find out more about CTZN Cosmetics: https://www.ctzncosmetics.com https://www.instagram.com/ctzncosmetics/

Layla calls it a practice, an everyday commitment to interrogate the ways in which we are implicated in white supremacy and a choice to do something different. She says that if you are doing this work and you are still comfortable then not much has changed, while intellectually you may understand what's going on.If your life hasn't had to change in any significant way, it's not really making a difference. I say this as someone who is examining my own life, how I do this work, even how I manage this podcast and the question I think all white folks should be asking themselves is what am I willing to risk? What am I willing to give up to put on the line so that we can disrupt the violence that is white supremacy and be an active part of transforming our culture and community? This podcast is calling white folks like myself up to a whole new level of practice and action. One that exists beyond our comfort zone, beyond business-as-usual, beyond our attachments to power and position. It asks us to trust in something bigger than our individual selves to believe so strongly in something that we will fight for it no matter what. And if we do that, perhaps we can become the good ancestors we were meant to be. In this edition:Some cello textures and melodies for your face. No talking today.A bite o writingA pod update and recommendAnother amazing short video.[2007 was a trying year, though I tried not to show it.]ResponsibilityIt's a leap to take responsibility for the sound we make in this world. Can’t hide anymore. If we make sound just for ourselves it's ok, but the implications of making it in earshot of others can scare even the most promising musician back into silence.Because if it affects me this much when you do it, what response in you will I have to shoulder?Duh! "It's not music that scares me, it's people!" This realization finally turned it around for me. And my fear of people wasn’t of getting beat up or rejected (any of the usual things) but their beauty. Your beauty.Witnessing music alone at night with my cassette tapes, going to shows, going to church... a fire would burn right above me. It was like the sound and my soul commingling into some third, totally unpredictable and uncontrollable entity. Telling me to stay present in life. As a teenager my musical taste developed haphazardly but I could always feel this third thing, the fire doing what it wanted and warming up the room whenever there was music playing. I was panicky at 13, but once I sat down at the piano I became action. All questions of style ceased, all genres melted and I evaporated into a cocoon of noise. All by myself.Everything felt safe and beautiful, all responsibility ceased. But that's the rub: responsibility.Because the room is rarely just ours. Other people will often be in it.I knew from my solitary listening the beauty that descends on a space when music is playing. But other people complicated and expanded this beauty. It's not just other players: any person within earshot is adding their own fire to the experience. All kinds of fire.A beautiful noise is one thing. Silence is also, as they say, golden. We all wield our ways of witnessing, consciously or not.And we don't get to decide what is "beautiful". We can only take responsibility for our own witnessing and tend the fire of the other people in the room with our playing.I can’t run away and hide from my own sound. Or yours. We're all in this. I owe you some truthful moments while we're here and capital M music is the best ticket I have for that.Responsibility is beautiful.Hope you liked the track....Podcast recommendation: CTZNI’ve been working on a show that just launched their Season 2: it’s called CTZN.I’m the producer, I put these things together. (How about let’s talk about making yours.)Here’s the S2 premiere, an interview with pleasure activist Adrienne Maree Brown.I’m working on my own pod as well… it’s just taking a while.I had a nice lunch with my friend Sean, and he said “I thought you’d just stopped making that show of yours” and I felt it.Just to give you all a heads up, I must say that making podcast episodes (at the quality level that I like) is time-consuming. My podcast, “Play It Like It’s Music” hasn’t gone away, I’m just working on lots of stuff at once and these things get pushed to the back because they are a pleasure project for me. Please be patient, there are some great ones coming up! In the meantime, go check out some older episodes and subscribe!something curated:This one is crazy. Honestly, I am so not visual. I don’t know how these people do it. I see some “non-musical” folks sometimes, and they can’t hold back their awe for someone who can and does do music. Well I feel the same way about folks who execute on their visual ideas, because when I look inside there I don’t see much. Since then, the call has gone viral, and Tarana is on a mission to help survivors navigate what comes after the hashtag.
