Flowing East and West: The Perfectly Imperfect Journey to a Fulfilled Life

Kerri Kelly, author of American Detox, joins us on the podcast this week to talk about her life and the lessons she learned through the process of writing her book. Kerri takes us on parts of her journey, beginning with 9/11 and how that changed her life as she grappled with tremendous loss, both personally and societally.  Ultimately, Kerri takes a hard look at the way healthcare functions (or doesn't), while never shying away from the role we as individuals play. While this all sounds heavy, Kerri's willingness to laugh at herself, share her story so openly and encourage us all to think more collectively is incredibly uplifting.   Bio:  Kerri is the founder of CTZNWELL, a movement that is democratizing wellbeing for all. A descendant of generations of firemen and first responders, Kerri has dedicated her life to kicking down doors and fighting for justice. She's been teaching yoga for over 20 years and is known for making waves in the wellness industry by challenging norms, disrupting systems and mobilizing people to act.    Links: American Detox: https://www.americandetox.co/  CTZNWELL: https://www.ctznwell.org/

Do you ever stop to think about whether or not you can afford organic food—and then consider that many people don't have such an option? Is Goop's $295 incense holder a sign of feminine empowerment or merely another Gwneth Paltrow grift? Will that $32 spin class that features an endless litany of positive affirmations make you more likely to slip $5 to the homeless person camped outside of the studio—or does it increase your happiness or contentment levels at all, once the endorphins wear off? These are just some of the questions posed by CTZNWELL founder, Kerri Kelly, in her new book, American Detox: The Myth of Wellness and How We Can Truly Heal. Beginning with her own transformational moment after 9/11, Kerri has long asked difficult questions of both herself and the industry she's spent decades immersed in. In fact, while Derek and Julian were co-founding the Conspirituality pre-cursor, YogaBrains, over a decade ago, Kerri was an integral member of yoga-activist organization, Off the Mat, Into the World. She joins us this week as co-host to discuss her own origin myth and to tell us exactly how she's detoxing from America these days.Show NotesAmerican Detox: The Myth of Wellness and How We Can Truly Heal

In this complex conversation with Kerri Kelly, the author of American Detox, Kerri shares with Gervase the event that disrupted life and forever changed her as she strove to find meaning, healing and understanding of who she was and how she got to this place. In this episode we dive into: Our roles in the world and what shapes us. How our societal rules are built to uphold systems of power. The veil that clouds our ability to see the truth. Vast differences in life experience based on proximity to privilege. How good intentions don't justify actions.   Kerri shares that you can start to recalibrate your life around new values based on the truth.  Just being willing to hold the truth and be changed by the truth allows you to see that the “we” is more important than the “I” if we are going to survive and thrive together.  It's about opening to the whole truth in our world and realizing that we have all internalized the teaching of toxic ideas.  By interrogating our actions and thoughts, locating where we are inside of the systems of power and privilege and engaging collectively we can imagine a better world for everyone. Kerri is the founder of CTZNWELL, a movement that is democratizing wellbeing for all. A descendant of generations of firemen and first responders, Kerri has dedicated her life to kicking down doors and fighting for justice. In this conversation with community organizer, wellness activist and author, Kerri Kelly, we talk about the perpetual and often unspoken trauma present in our country due to the systems in place that have created and sustain a health, education, wealth, and wellness gap where some are able to seemingly thrive and others are given so little. We also talk about about what it does to us to be on the privileged side of that chasm and the ways it trains us to be isolated, numbed out, scarcity focused, and lonely. We also discuss an evolving definition of the word wellness and the importance of the agency to decide what that word means for us.  Kerri is the founder of CTZNWELL, a movement that is democratizing wellbeing for all. We've all heard the call to self-care, some have even heeded it. But what if, beyond the core concept of taking care of your physical, emotional, and spiritual self, there was a deeper engine of discord and exclusion at play? Wellbeing is, no doubt, key to living a good life, but wellness - as a concept - over the years, has become an industry, and along with that has come both incredible benefits and also a host of co-opted, problematic ideals, offerings and structures. A look under the hood often reveals an arguably toxic industry with deep cracks in its foundation that threaten to reveal the inequitable, exclusionary, shame-driven, perfection-aspiring, and, on occasion, even predatory side of wellness culture. But, it doesn't have to be that way. That's what we're exploring in today's episode with community organizer and wellness activist Kerri Kelly. Kerri is the founder of CTZNWELL, a movement that is democratizing well-being for all. As a descendant of generations of firemen and first responders, Kerri has dedicated her life to kicking down doors and fighting for justice. She's been teaching yoga for over 20 years and is known for making waves in the wellness industry by challenging norms, disrupting systems, and mobilizing people to act. Kerri is the author of the forthcoming book American Detox: The Myth of Wellness and How We Can Truly Heal, and through her work and her advocacy, she's been instrumental in translating the practices of wellbeing into social and political action and working in collaboration with community organizers, spiritual leaders, and policymakers to transform our systems from the inside out. Today, I get the pleasure of chatting more about her ideas, activism, and all the ins and outs of wellness culture through her lens. And in this conversation, you'll hear us talk about the aftermath of 9/11 and how loss and grief pushed Kerri into the world of wellness; we explore wellness as we've come to know it today and its transformation into a symbol of luxury, the divisiveness of the movement, the deep systematic problems that plague its culture, and what we can do about it. As the world slowly recovers from the pandemic, we once again venture out into our communities, settle back into our routines, and return to our regularly-scheduled broadcasting as well as we can. Though any TNWN listener could tell you that “normal” isn't always a good thing and that our own comfort doesn't equate to someone else's, today we will be examining why in more specific detail with our guest, Kerri Kelly.   Kerri Kelly is an activist for wellness, a yoga instructor, and a catalyst for change in her communities. She's also the host/founder of the podcast/initiative CTZNWELL, promoting the idea that we must democratize wellness in order for all of us to truly thrive. Her upcoming book, American Detox: The Myth of Wellness and How We Can Truly Heal, is an extension of that work. Settle in and get uncomfortable, because sometimes it takes a little discomfort to grow and heal a community.   Topics Covered: How do we recondition ourselves to avoid the pitfalls of normalcy? Creating a culture of accountability Recovering as a community from wide-scale traumas like 9/11 or a pandemic How do the relationships within our community help us grow, personally? What are the limits of allyship as we know it? Kerri Kelly September 11th changed life for all of us, but for Kerri Kelly the impact was especially personal. In the aftermath of that event Kerri upended her life and went on a search for wellness. What she found was not what she expected and, once again, the trajectory of her life was changed. In her new book, American Detox: The Myth of Wellness and How We Can Truly Heal, and in this conversation, Kerri explores the ways in which our culture of wellness perpetuates systems that are deeply unwell. She leads us in a conversation that helps us find our way towards the deep, connected wellness that nourishes us all and away from individualistic focus that keeps us stuck in unhealthy comparison and competition. I couldn't put Kerri's book down and then, when we spoke, I wanted to talk to her for hours more.  Our distorted ideas of wellness hurt us all, and those ideas are so deeply embedded it can be hard to even see them. Kerri pulls back the curtain and gives us a path out, a path towards true healing. Her book is out now and I can't say enough about how important a book I think it is. Listen to our conversation, read her book, and find your way to the healing that we so deeply desire.  For a written transcript of this conversation click here. About Kerri Kelly: Kerri Kelly, is the founder of CTZNWell, a movement that is democratizing wellbeing for all. A descendent of generations of firemen and first responders Kerri has dedicated her life to kicking down doors and fighting for justice. She has been teaching yoga for over 20 years. She is a community organizer, wellness activist, and author of American detox, the myth of wellness and how we can truly heal. Kerri is also recognized across communities for her inspired work to bridge transformational practice with social justice. Her leadership has inspired a movement that is actively organizing around issues of racial and economic justice, healthcare as a human right civic engagement and more. Kerri is a powerful facilitator, TED speaker, and is the host of the prominent podcast citizen, that is spelled CTZN. You can learn more about her work at KerriKelly.co. Three Actions: 1) Interrogate yourself. Be relentlessly curious about what you've been taught, how you've been shaped and indoctrinated by dominant stories and dominant narratives and cultures, and how that's holding you back from your own wholeness. So be curious about that. And how that's a part of a larger system, right, how you're a part of a larger system.  2) Locate yourself inside that system. What is your place, and proximity? We're all impacted and implicated in different ways. And I want to just say different and disproportionate, I feel like I have to say that as a white bodied woman with so much privilege. So it's really important for us to both take responsibility for our part in this mess. And also see ourselves as part of the solution, right? So it's like, locate yourself so that you can step into your right role and responsibility. 3) Engage in collective action, get political, work with other people, line up in solidarity with organizations who are on the frontlines of the many issues that we are navigating right now. Because personal solutions are not going to solve the many problems, the many systemic and collective problems that we're facing. And so it's really important for folks to see their practice beyond the cushion, and to see wellness as a radical political act, as we work to create the conditions where everybody can be well. My guest Kerri Kelly landed on the perfect summation for this episode: “It's gonna be juicy y'all!” And it is, since our discussion centers on whiteness. Ha––leave it to whiteness to center itself here, there, everywhere. In this instance, however, whiteness and the cacophony of capitalism that almost always accompanies it, is drowned out by Kerri's challenging, meaningful call-in. And she keeps that volume turned way up. In her new book American Detox: The Myth of Wellness and How We Can Truly Heal, Kerri confronts the toxic systems (founded on whiteness) that have commodified wellness and prohibit everyone (including white folks) from enjoying genuine well-being.  What qualifies her to make such a case? Well, Kerri is the founder of CTZNWELL, a movement that's democratizing well-being for all and a yoga instructor with 20+ years of experience. She's well-known for making waves in the wellness industry by challenging norms, disrupting systems and mobilizing people to act. She's dedicated her life to kicking down doors and fighting for justice, traits she's inherited from a long line of first-responder ancestors.  Now that I see the lie of white supremacy everywhere (Perfectionism! Productivity! Individualism!), I recognize how thoroughly indoctrinated I am in the system and the harm caused by my own mistake. That repeated realization is tiresome, by design. White supremacy is engineered to keep us severed from self-discovery and the will to continually question and call out. This is challenging, lifetime work.  GUEST BIO Kerri Kelly is the founder of CTZNWELL, a movement that is democratizing well-being for all. Join Suzanne Toro and Kerri Kelly in an in-depth conversation around her new book, American Detox: The Myth of Wellness and How We Can Truly Heal. We find a possible bridge...returning to what we have already known. We explore remembering our ancestors to help us find the solutions and remedies to collectively heal and take actions for the benefit of all. Questions to contemplate…What were you taught about entitlement?• What is your right role and responsibility in bringing forth justice and wellbeing for all?• What is your relationship with perfection?• And what has individualism cost you?AMERICAN DETOX  We are an America obsessed with self-seeking and self-perfection, driving a wellness industry that reaches more than 80 million people and fuels a market worth more than 650 billion dollars. An industry that promises to make you better, stronger, healthier and whole and meets an ever-increasing demand amongst Americans to “feel good” and find meaning in a cruel and confusing world. But while wellness soars so does inequality, insecurity and isolation. We don't need more juice fasts and yoga fads–we need to detox from the ideologies of separation, supremacy and scarcity that are holding us back from our best selves. The myth of wellness isn't making us well. And until we confront the toxicity of our culture and systems, we won't ever truly heal.In American Detox, Kerri Kelly—community organizer and wellness activist—sounds a wake-up call. The wellness that we are so relentlessly seeking is only possible when we embody a mutual responsibility that goes beyond self care towards collective wellbeing. Through powerful storytelling, critical analysis and new/old wisdom, Kerri tackles America's toxic culture rooted in perfectionism, white supremacy and individualism and explores a new paradigm for personal and societal wellness that is radical, relational and resilient. Along the way, she offers tangible practices and strategies for how to detox from the culture of separation, supremacy and scarcity and show up for the wellbeing of the whole. It is a timely book that disrupts the status quo and provokes radical responsibility, while also nourishing and sustaining our resistance and resilience. American Detox is a “personal reckoning meets citizen handbook” about waking up, reclaiming our wholeness and transforming our country from the inside-out.BIO.Kerri is the founder of CTZNWELL, a movement that is democratizing wellbeing for all. This week, my dear friend, Michelle Cassandra Johnson is back to help us tend to the shattered parts of ourselves so that we can embrace our wholeness and do the work of healing the collective heart. In the podcast, she says, what's needed in this moment isn't to get back to normal or to get back to work or to get back being busy and productive. What's needed is to acknowledge what we've gone through and what has been lost. We must feel in order to heal. Her new book, Finding Refuge: Heartwork for Healing Collective Grief, is a radical invitation for those of us who feel brokenhearted, helpless, confused, powerless, and desperate in this moment to embrace the lost art of grieving as an essential component of healing. This book moved me and made me feel new depths and dimensions of my grief that I honestly didn't know was there. It made me reflect on how I, like many others, have attempted to manage my grief behind closed doors - alone and isolated. But Michelle reminds us that we don't grieve in isolation in the same way that we don't heal in isolation. This podcast is a beautiful and joyful reminder that despite the difficult and uncertain times we are facing - we are resilient together and have the capacity to meet this moment with an open heart that can heal us forward. On a new definition of politics, and caring for ourselves through this. Kerri is the founder of CTZNWELL, a movement to mobilize the wellbeing community into a powerful force for change. Her work was sparked on 9-11, when she lost her step-dad, a fireman, in the towers. She quickly discovered the power of yoga and mindfulness, not just as a tool for personal healing, but as a catalyst for collective change. Since then, Kerri has worked passionately to organize communities around the fight for justice and wellbeing. A yoga teacher, public speaker and change-agent - Kerri is recognized across communities for her inspired work to bridge transformational practice with social change and politics. She’s been instrumental in translating the tools of wellbeing into practical application and social action in the public sector, working in collaboration with community organizers, spiritual leaders and policy makers. Her leadership has inspired a movement to democratize wellbeing that is actively organizing around issues of economic and racial justice, universal healthcare, civic engagement and more. This episode is from a three-part series called “How We Get Through: Collective Resilience in a World on Fire” from our friends at Faith Matters Network. It aired in the Fall of 2020 which was a time in our country where we were literally on fire - California and other parts of the country were raging during the time of this series. But we were also amidst many pandemics at once - the pandemic of covid, the pandemic that is structural and cultural racism, the pandemic of record inequality and of course the pandemic that is climate change. And what is different about this series - besides the fact that it features brilliant movement leaders - is that it explores not just what we DO in the face of this fire but how we BE together; how we keep going and meet whatever comes next so that we can bring about the future that we all deserve. This particular conversation featuring Kazu Haga, Xan West, the organizers from the chilean movement La Coordinadora Feminista 8M and Carinne Luck explores how movements in and of themselves are healing - how healing has been woven in from building relationships in small teams to exploring how to create containers for rage and healing in the streets and bring in intentional joy. This episode comes from a series hosted by our friends at Faith Matters Network called How to Get Through: collective resilience in a world on fire. It was designed to prepare social justice movements to weave healing and care into our lives and work before, during and after crises and big “movement moments” like this one. This first conversation with Sidney Morgan, adrienne maree brown, Prentis Hemphill and Micky Scottbey Jones is about how we actually do the work of being human together - flawed and all, mistakes, conflict and pain included. How do we survive these times? How do we navigate conflict? How do we live into accountability? How do we take care of each other along the way. It is a powerful and brave exploration of the practice of being change, not just doing change. And it is essential medicine for this moment. Enjoy. It enjoins us to see no stranger but instead look at others and say: You are a part of me I do not yet know. That is exactly how Valarie and i met: two unlikely allies who found one another across time and space and difference. And while it was our suffering that united us, it was our relationship that transformed us. She says of this moment:“The future is dark. But is this the darkness of the tomb – or the darkness of the womb?”Resistance alone will not deliver us. There’s a strange reference right now about how being in isolation is akin to being locked up. We’re seeing that narrative replicated around the country in the many white-led riots against the stay-at-home rules. Let’s be clear: this quarantine is NOTHING like what people experience in prison. In fact, the outbreaks in prisons around the country reveal that incarcerated people are both more exposed and less able to protect themselves. But beyond the current circumstances, many are questioning the role and efficacy of incarceration all together. And one of those advocates is Oneika Mays, the first Mindfulness Coach at Rikers Island Correctional Facility, where she works one-on-one with incarcerated people to help them cope with the stress and trauma of incarceration and foster resilience for re-entry and recovery. Oneika says that our system “is a reflection of the society that we live in, and changes in society will change the way that we police, will change the way we treat certain people in schools and in certain neighborhoods. And when those kinds of things change, when we change our perception of the way that we view groups of people, that will lead to lasting change.” This conversation is fierce and vulnerable and exactly what we all need to hear right now. Layla calls it a practice, an everyday commitment to interrogate the ways in which we are implicated in white supremacy and a choice to do something different. She says that if you are doing this work and you are still comfortable then not much has changed, while intellectually you may understand what's going on.If your life hasn't had to change in any significant way, it's not really making a difference. I say this as someone who is examining my own life, how I do this work, even how I manage this podcast and the question I think all white folks should be asking themselves is what am I willing to risk? What am I willing to give up to put on the line so that we can disrupt the violence that is white supremacy and be an active part of transforming our culture and community? This podcast is calling white folks like myself up to a whole new level of practice and action. One that exists beyond our comfort zone, beyond business-as-usual, beyond our attachments to power and position. It asks us to trust in something bigger than our individual selves to believe so strongly in something that we will fight for it no matter what. And if we do that, perhaps we can become the good ancestors we were meant to be. Not, how I do more activism or be a better ally, but how do I love for real? That too is justice. Justice calls us not only to correct whatever is in the way of love, but it also invites us to live into that love. And that inquiry starts with self-love. Because how we love ourselves IS how we love everyone else. But the truth is, we live in a culture that does not reinforce self-love. It says love yourself only when you are smarter, healthier, more productive, more perfect. We are taught that love is conditional and so it’s no wonder that we project conditional love to others and make choices that are not loving to the whole of humanity. But when we can claim radical love for ourselves - the kind that is expressed through grace and compassion and forgiveness - then we can start to extend that kind of love outwards in relationship, in how we repair the breach and love across lines of difference and disagreement and in how we love through our choices, through our votes and especially through our money.Anasa reminds us that love is not some idea or intention. Love is who we are and what we do. And when we embody that kind of love fully, then justice and joy will flow. This conversation is a reminder and realignment with the very thing that is most important and essential to our work: LOVE. But what makes her unique is that she’s as committed to who she’s being as to what she’s doing. This episode is for anyone (like myself) who cares about humanity and wants to get more informed about how our government works and how to be more civically active, but who has struggled with feeling overwhelmed or even repulsed by our political system and the process of voting. In the U.S. this week, there are 49,000 elections happening across 34 states. U.S. citizens are granted the right to vote at age 18, just as we're becoming adults. It's an important part of growing up, and yet many people (myself included) don’t always exercise this privilege and responsibility. In today’s episode, I’m talking with Lauren Roberts, who has worked in the U.S. Senate, collaborates with CTZNWELL and founded INDY YOGA VOTES, a campaign to bridge her local yoga community with political action. We’re discussing why it’s important to vote even though the system is broken, the power of local elections, some common obstacles to voting and civic participation and how we can overcome those obstacles.  You can check on your voter registration status and learn more about your local elections at Vote.org or Vote411.org And learn more about today's episode on the Shownotes page.

It's about white supremacy.Trump’s travel ban was not the beginning but a continuation of a legacy of immigration restrictions and bans in America. And it began with the Naturalization Act of 1790 which said only free white people could be citizens of this country. What we are witnessing right now - with travel bans and family separation and caged children and overflowing, unsafe, unsanitary concentrations camps - was built on that legacy. And witnessing is exactly what we need to do. Not the kind of empathy that centers our feelings of others pain and just sits there. But the kind that takes action because of what has been witnessed. The word in Arabic is Shahada - which translates directly to “act of witness and testimony.” May calls it a kind of engaged “with-ness,” one that is interdependent, active and engaged. So, she wrote a book called Skill in Action to help us redefine and reclaim what yoga and wellness really looks like in a toxic culture. Yoga and contemplative practice is a pathway to healing, but only when we are willing to do the difficult and uncomfortable work of acknowledging the truth of a culture that is dominated by ideologies of whiteness and individualism. The pain of that culture of separation demands to be felt and that is the only way towards healing. She challenges us to hold the reality that we are both one human interdependent family AND (and this is a big “and”) that we are living very different experiences based on how institutions and culture are set up for our particular identity and social location. There is shared experience in how we get free AND there are unique roles and responsibilities that we each play given our location and that is a part of the “skill in action” that we need to cultivate. The truth is, we are not really doing yoga, we are not really being mindful and we are not really well unless we center a level of consciousness that acknowledges the truth of who we are and how we got here. Otherwise, we are just replicating the toxic systems that we are trying to transform. But Michelle reminds us that we are bigger than white supremacy and we can be better, We can construct something better. White fragility can look like anger or fear or guilt or tears or just about anything that allows us to escape our discomfort. It's not just causing harm to the people of color we engaged with, it is holding us back from any kind of meaningful dialogue and work across lines of difference. Now, for all of you white folks thinking, “this is not me, I'm a good white person”. This IS you and it's also me, because racism isn't just about bad people. It's about a system and culture that is designed to uphold white dominance. As I discovered in reading her book, the behaviors attributed to fragility are more subtle than you think because that's how white supremacy and cultural racism works. It's insidious and often invisible, especially to those who benefit and in this episode, you'll hear Robin say, "The game is up. You are a racist." When we can get there, when we can acknowledge how and when and where we are being racist, then we can get to work.I am one of those people and this conversation unlocked a whole other level of my own racism and really challenged me to reckon with where am I still actively participating in white supremacy, how am I attached to the unearned benefits it affords me and what am I willing to risk so that we can all get free? What I've learned is that we can survive our discomfort and fragility but we may not survive the violence of white supremacy. To not just disrupt and push against, but to imagine better, to dream bolder. One of my favorite quotes from his book is “context is what enables us to remember that we have survived far worse than this present moment and we will grow something far better.”He says that when we get a taste of the “real” - of love beauty and belonging - then we can reject what they are offering us. We are able to discover creativity, which he defines as introducing invention into existence. Only then can we imagine better and plot towards the world that is beyond our wildest dreams. Erin Schrode was an activist in the womb. By the age of 13 she had started a non-profit called Turning Green, a global student-led movement devoted to cultivating a healthy, just and thriving planet through education and advocacy around environmentally sustainable and socially responsible choices. She is young and passionate and hungry. And it’s not that she’s fearless but rather fear-with. She can face her fear and do it anyway. And at the age of 24, she surprised even herself when she decided to run for office, becoming the youngest person ever to have run for Congress. And it reminded me of an article I read recently that said the problem for women is not winning - it’s deciding to run. When women run they are just as likely to get elected as men.But as Erin described her process of deciding, you could hear that narrative that women in particular embody - that we are never ready, never good enough, never smart enough or resourced enough to do anything much less run for office. I was inspired by Erin’s story of choosing to go all in, despite what was stacked against her.And she had me reflect on what gets lost when we wait for the right time? What’s at stake when we don’t go for it? When we live up to our potential? And her secret is this: before she decides to do anything big, she asks herself three questions:1-Where can I be most impactful?2-What am I most passionate about?3-What best sets me up for a lifetime of service? And she is proving that we can start before we’re ready. And what I found most compelling in our conversation was her ability to be both brave and vulnerable at the same time. Jamia isn’t afraid to get uncomfortable, to tackle tough issues and to hold the complexity of our intersectionality. But as we discuss in this podcast, speaking truth to power isn’t just something we fling around. It’s a skill set that we cultivate and channel. To build the muscle of authentic and courageous communication requires self awareness, a commitment to relationship and a curiosity and consciousness about how we got here and what it’s gonna take to change. And that is the perfect superpower for Jamia who is an activist, author and the executive director of the Feminist Press. Jamia is not just known for her provocative words, but is becoming the go-to interviewer for provocative conversations with some of the the biggest feminist icons of our time including Solange, Erykah Badu and the legend herself Congresswoman Maxine Waters.Jamia recalled some of what she’s learned from this lineage of feminists saying “it’s not just about reclaiming your time but about reclaiming your power.” In this interview, she challenges us to contemplate how we can be more fearless about leaning into our purpose, trusting our instincts and channeling our power. And I've struggled with this, especially as a white, cisgender, straight person, with lots of privilege points. My activism has been intense and serious and sacrificial. I didn't give myself permission for joy. I was righteous in my commitment, but I was constantly burned out and tired. I became snarky and cynical, and I forgot how to have fun. What I learned from Paola, and what I'm starting to practice myself, is that joy itself is an act of resistance. In our conversation, Paola said, "Without joy, you can only resist for so long before you break." And communities on the front lines are really modeling this.Joy is the medicine. It keeps us resilient, it keeps us inspired, and it keeps us going. When we claim our joy, it is a radical act of defiance. In it, we affirm our existence and worthiness. Our expression in and of itself is disruptive to the status quo that tries to get us to be complicit and conform. When we sing and dance and draw and sculpt, we are shaping a new story of what is possible for ourselves and one another. But Real Love - how to love when it’s hard or less obvious; how to love when we don’t agree; how to love in the face of so much division and oppression. And we are turning to the incredibly wise Sharon Salzberg, meditation master and and best-selling author. Sharon has been teaching Metta meditation, or loving kindness, since 1974. She’s been seminal, not just in bringing meditation and mindful practice to the west, but in modernizing the practice, making it relatable and accessible. Her latest book, Real Love, does just that. In our conversation, we tackle everything from loving our enemies to empathy burn-out to befriending our inner critic and to voting as an act of love.If this episode resonates for you, we’d love for you to take a screenshot and tag us on Instagram stories @ctznwell and @sharonsalzberg, and click below to tweet:“Real Love is not about letting yourself off the hook. Real love does not encourage you to ignore your problems or deny your mistakes or imperfections. It’s hard to love people who are perpetuating harm and separation. But if I’m being honest, I equally struggle with loving myself. And whenever I’d hear or read about self love, I’d roll my eyes. It just seemed impossible to me. Instead I had my own flavor of love - one that was conditional and perfectionist. A perspective, I realize, that is not very different from the culture of scarcity and supremacy that is profiting off of the idea that love or worthiness must be earned; that one must be “good enough” to get or give love. But that’s not what Sharon is talking about. Instead, she offers a more complex and inclusive perspective on real love. She says: “Real Love is not about letting yourself off the hook. Real love does not encourage you to ignore your problems or deny your mistakes or imperfections. You see them clearly and still opt for love.”Love has the capacity to exist beyond difference and division, beyond imperfections and mistakes. And when we understand real love for ourselves, we can understand it for others - especially when it’s hard. What Sharon is teaching, and what I’m learning for myself, is that love, too, is a practice.Join CTZNWELL on PatreonFollow CTZNWELL on InstagramSign up for CTZNWELL’s weekly email WELLread and check out our free action guides at ctznwell.org.

Who Is Allowed To Be Well? Yoga, mindfulness, and all manner of "wellness" practices have become a big business. As western culture encounters the wisdom of other cultures, it often appropriates and co-opts that wisdom, with the result being that many of these mind-body wellbeing practices are now seen as the provenance of the wealthy and privileged.  Kerri Kelly came to yoga after years in a corporate marketing career left her burnt out and disconnected. As she experienced her own personal healing, she started to ask deeper questions about who had access to these practices and what responsibility the privileged had to the rest of the suffering world. Next, we discuss how one can have boundaries in a community approach to self-care. In particular, we explore how self-worth is necessary to believe you are worthy of the care that boundaries provide. She shares how she believes her perfectionism is rooted in systems of oppression that exist in our society. Then we move into how she discovered that well-being for people with privilege is about community care. Whereas, for people who have less privilege, choosing self-care is radical. We then discuss how leaving people behind is leaving people behind and how sometimes that means letting go of winning or getting credit. Finally, we discuss how to redistribute power and privilege so people have access to the resources they need for self-care! The transcription for this episode can be found here.
