Flowing East and West: The Perfectly Imperfect Journey to a Fulfilled Life

Kerri Kelly, author of American Detox, joins us on the podcast this week to talk about her life and the lessons she learned through the process of writing her book. Kerri takes us on parts of her journey, beginning with 9/11 and how that changed her life as she grappled with tremendous loss, both personally and societally.  Ultimately, Kerri takes a hard look at the way healthcare functions (or doesn't), while never shying away from the role we as individuals play. While this all sounds heavy, Kerri's willingness to laugh at herself, share her story so openly and encourage us all to think more collectively is incredibly uplifting.   Bio:  Kerri is the founder of CTZNWELL, a movement that is democratizing wellbeing for all. A descendant of generations of firemen and first responders, Kerri has dedicated her life to kicking down doors and fighting for justice. She's been teaching yoga for over 20 years and is known for making waves in the wellness industry by challenging norms, disrupting systems and mobilizing people to act.    Links: American Detox: https://www.americandetox.co/  CTZNWELL: https://www.ctznwell.org/

Flowing East and West: The Perfectly Imperfect Journey to a Fulfilled Life

Every February, around this time, approximately 8 billion small heart-shaped candies are created and exchanged.  These candies bear messages of love and care, and are often used as gifts to express feelings for another person.   In each episode featuring a guest, we ask them if there are any words of wisdom they might share with their younger selves. These words of wisdom are like those Sweetheart treats, but instead of representing love for someone else, they are messages of love directed to our guests themselves, and by extension, to all of us.  We are so inspired by the wisdom our guests shared, so we put all these beautiful words together, as a little love treat for our listeners.  Enjoy!   Thank you to our amazing guests for their words of wisdom: Donna Peek, Darren Gold, Leslie McGuirk, Mike Robbins, Susan Olesek, Laila Tarraf, Nichelle Trambell Spellman, Rachel Bitecofer, Bridgette Corridan, Mary Lin McBride, Ali Ingersoll, Cara Jones, David Richman, Chris Pierce, Chris Tsakalakis, Jill Santa Lucia, Forrest Wright, Aisha Ponds, Donna Rhode, Kristin Firpo, Marney Sullivan, Deborah Egerton, Rebekah Rotstein, Daryan Rahimzadeh, Kat Gordon, Kat Williford, Jeff Slater, Bryan Gillette, Oneika Mays, Vanessa Loder, Kerri Kelly, Seane Corn, Sarah McDonald, Mary Felice, Shelly Tygielski, Joe Walsh, Rebecca Ward, Nicole Swiner, Natalie Grumet, Marti Grimminck, Ava Lashay, Maureen Aarons, Josh Izenberg, Trish Hegarty, Kim Hunter, Ashleigh Parker, Chris Hendricks, Danny Rosin, Michelle Simmons, Katherine Kennedy, Tony Lillios

We're joined by community organizer and wellness activist Kerri Kelly. She is the author of American Detox: The Myth of Wellness and How We Can Truly Heal and the founder of CTZNWELL, a movement that is democratizing wellbeing for all. She works diligently to dismantle oppression within herself and the systems and culture she is a part of. She works in support and solidarity with BIPOC leaders and organizations to explore how to work across lines of difference to advance equity and build community resilience. As a white woman of privilege, Kerri is committed to dismantling systems of oppression and doing her part to bring about the more just and equitable world that we all deserve. She understands that the toxic impacts of these systems land differently and disproportionately on BIPOC people. Because of this reality Kerri gives attribution and reparation to the long long lineage of first responders, healers, activists and organizers that she comes from. Learn more at ctznwell.org

The last time Russell saw Kerri Kelly they were getting robbed together on Chamundi Hill outside of Mysore, India. For Russ it was the best trip he ever had to India. Imagine an episode of West Wing where one of the communications staffers working for Josh Lyman took a yoga side-trip while on an important diplomatic tour, and got stuck in India with no money, passport, or visa. No way to leave the country and no way to stay. “DONNA!!!” Listen to this #funnynotfunny tale, as Kerri and Russell pulled every string and lever they knew to get this staffer out of the country! Ten years later, Kerri has written an amazing book that speaks to our times Part of our self-care is how we talk care of one another. American Detox: The Myth of Wellness And How we can Truly Heal. What we understand to be wellness now, has become divorced from it's origin, commodified, and sold as a luxury items that even the 99% struggle to afford. Wellness isn't just self-care rituals, like yoga or meditation, but it's a living wage, a home, food, and basic human needs. It's not just what you buy in lululemon, it's all the ways we fight and advocate for healthy living conditions, so that all can get what they truly need. “The myth of wellness is a lie. And until we learn to confront and dismantle its toxic systems, we can't ever be well.” -Kerri Kelly The industry soars upwards of $650 billion a year, but we're still isolated, insecure, and inequitable. “Wellness” isn't making us well; it's making us worse! It diverts our attention and holds us back from asking the questions that do help us heal: Who gets to be well in America? Who's harmed--and who's left out? And what's the real-life cost of our obsession with self-improvement? Join my Time Genius Mastermind & Bonus Half-Day Retreat when you join Marie Forloe's Time Genius before October 13th! Do you ever stop to think about whether or not you can afford organic food—and then consider that many people don't have such an option? Is Goop's $295 incense holder a sign of feminine empowerment or merely another Gwneth Paltrow grift? Will that $32 spin class that features an endless litany of positive affirmations make you more likely to slip $5 to the homeless person camped outside of the studio—or does it increase your happiness or contentment levels at all, once the endorphins wear off? These are just some of the questions posed by CTZNWELL founder, Kerri Kelly, in her new book, American Detox: The Myth of Wellness and How We Can Truly Heal. Beginning with her own transformational moment after 9/11, Kerri has long asked difficult questions of both herself and the industry she's spent decades immersed in. In fact, while Derek and Julian were co-founding the Conspirituality pre-cursor, YogaBrains, over a decade ago, Kerri was an integral member of yoga-activist organization, Off the Mat, Into the World. In this complex conversation with Kerri Kelly, the author of American Detox, Kerri shares with Gervase the event that disrupted life and forever changed her as she strove to find meaning, healing and understanding of who she was and how she got to this place. In this episode we dive into: Our roles in the world and what shapes us. How our societal rules are built to uphold systems of power. The veil that clouds our ability to see the truth. Vast differences in life experience based on proximity to privilege. How good intentions don't justify actions.   Kerri shares that you can start to recalibrate your life around new values based on the truth.  Just being willing to hold the truth and be changed by the truth allows you to see that the “we” is more important than the “I” if we are going to survive and thrive together.  It's about opening to the whole truth in our world and realizing that we have all internalized the teaching of toxic ideas.  By interrogating our actions and thoughts, locating where we are inside of the systems of power and privilege and engaging collectively we can imagine a better world for everyone. Kerri is the founder of CTZNWELL, a movement that is democratizing wellbeing for all. In this conversation with community organizer, wellness activist and author, Kerri Kelly, we talk about the perpetual and often unspoken trauma present in our country due to the systems in place that have created and sustain a health, education, wealth, and wellness gap where some are able to seemingly thrive and others are given so little. We also talk about about what it does to us to be on the privileged side of that chasm and the ways it trains us to be isolated, numbed out, scarcity focused, and lonely. We also discuss an evolving definition of the word wellness and the importance of the agency to decide what that word means for us.  Kerri is the founder of CTZNWELL, a movement that is democratizing wellbeing for all. We've all heard the call to self-care, some have even heeded it. But what if, beyond the core concept of taking care of your physical, emotional, and spiritual self, there was a deeper engine of discord and exclusion at play? Wellbeing is, no doubt, key to living a good life, but wellness - as a concept - over the years, has become an industry, and along with that has come both incredible benefits and also a host of co-opted, problematic ideals, offerings and structures. A look under the hood often reveals an arguably toxic industry with deep cracks in its foundation that threaten to reveal the inequitable, exclusionary, shame-driven, perfection-aspiring, and, on occasion, even predatory side of wellness culture. But, it doesn't have to be that way. That's what we're exploring in today's episode with community organizer and wellness activist Kerri Kelly. Kerri is the founder of CTZNWELL, a movement that is democratizing well-being for all. As a descendant of generations of firemen and first responders, Kerri has dedicated her life to kicking down doors and fighting for justice. She's been teaching yoga for over 20 years and is known for making waves in the wellness industry by challenging norms, disrupting systems, and mobilizing people to act. Kerri is the author of the forthcoming book American Detox: The Myth of Wellness and How We Can Truly Heal, and through her work and her advocacy, she's been instrumental in translating the practices of wellbeing into social and political action and working in collaboration with community organizers, spiritual leaders, and policymakers to transform our systems from the inside out. Today, I get the pleasure of chatting more about her ideas, activism, and all the ins and outs of wellness culture through her lens. And in this conversation, you'll hear us talk about the aftermath of 9/11 and how loss and grief pushed Kerri into the world of wellness; we explore wellness as we've come to know it today and its transformation into a symbol of luxury, the divisiveness of the movement, the deep systematic problems that plague its culture, and what we can do about it. As the world slowly recovers from the pandemic, we once again venture out into our communities, settle back into our routines, and return to our regularly-scheduled broadcasting as well as we can. Though any TNWN listener could tell you that “normal” isn't always a good thing and that our own comfort doesn't equate to someone else's, today we will be examining why in more specific detail with our guest, Kerri Kelly.   Kerri Kelly is an activist for wellness, a yoga instructor, and a catalyst for change in her communities. She's also the host/founder of the podcast/initiative CTZNWELL, promoting the idea that we must democratize wellness in order for all of us to truly thrive. Her upcoming book, American Detox: The Myth of Wellness and How We Can Truly Heal, is an extension of that work. Settle in and get uncomfortable, because sometimes it takes a little discomfort to grow and heal a community.   Topics Covered: How do we recondition ourselves to avoid the pitfalls of normalcy? Creating a culture of accountability Recovering as a community from wide-scale traumas like 9/11 or a pandemic How do the relationships within our community help us grow, personally? Kerri Kelly September 11th changed life for all of us, but for Kerri Kelly the impact was especially personal. In the aftermath of that event Kerri upended her life and went on a search for wellness. What she found was not what she expected and, once again, the trajectory of her life was changed. In her new book, American Detox: The Myth of Wellness and How We Can Truly Heal, and in this conversation, Kerri explores the ways in which our culture of wellness perpetuates systems that are deeply unwell. She leads us in a conversation that helps us find our way towards the deep, connected wellness that nourishes us all and away from individualistic focus that keeps us stuck in unhealthy comparison and competition. I couldn't put Kerri's book down and then, when we spoke, I wanted to talk to her for hours more.  Our distorted ideas of wellness hurt us all, and those ideas are so deeply embedded it can be hard to even see them. Kerri pulls back the curtain and gives us a path out, a path towards true healing. Her book is out now and I can't say enough about how important a book I think it is. Listen to our conversation, read her book, and find your way to the healing that we so deeply desire.  For a written transcript of this conversation click here. About Kerri Kelly: Kerri Kelly, is the founder of CTZNWell, a movement that is democratizing wellbeing for all. A descendent of generations of firemen and first responders Kerri has dedicated her life to kicking down doors and fighting for justice. She has been teaching yoga for over 20 years. She is a community organizer, wellness activist, and author of American detox, the myth of wellness and how we can truly heal. Kerri is also recognized across communities for her inspired work to bridge transformational practice with social justice. Her leadership has inspired a movement that is actively organizing around issues of racial and economic justice, healthcare as a human right civic engagement and more. Kerri is a powerful facilitator, TED speaker, and is the host of the prominent podcast citizen, that is spelled CTZN. You can learn more about her work at KerriKelly.co. Three Actions: 1) Interrogate yourself. Be relentlessly curious about what you've been taught, how you've been shaped and indoctrinated by dominant stories and dominant narratives and cultures, and how that's holding you back from your own wholeness. So be curious about that. And how that's a part of a larger system, right, how you're a part of a larger system.  2) Locate yourself inside that system. What is your place, and proximity? We're all impacted and implicated in different ways. And I want to just say different and disproportionate, I feel like I have to say that as a white bodied woman with so much privilege. So it's really important for us to both take responsibility for our part in this mess. And also see ourselves as part of the solution, right? So it's like, locate yourself so that you can step into your right role and responsibility. 3) Engage in collective action, get political, work with other people, line up in solidarity with organizations who are on the frontlines of the many issues that we are navigating right now. Because personal solutions are not going to solve the many problems, the many systemic and collective problems that we're facing. And so it's really important for folks to see their practice beyond the cushion, and to see wellness as a radical political act, as we work to create the conditions where everybody can be well. My guest Kerri Kelly landed on the perfect summation for this episode: “It's gonna be juicy y'all!” And it is, since our discussion centers on whiteness. Ha––leave it to whiteness to center itself here, there, everywhere. In this instance, however, whiteness and the cacophony of capitalism that almost always accompanies it, is drowned out by Kerri's challenging, meaningful call-in. And she keeps that volume turned way up. In her new book American Detox: The Myth of Wellness and How We Can Truly Heal, Kerri confronts the toxic systems (founded on whiteness) that have commodified wellness and prohibit everyone (including white folks) from enjoying genuine well-being.  What qualifies her to make such a case? Well, Kerri is the founder of CTZNWELL, a movement that's democratizing well-being for all and a yoga instructor with 20+ years of experience. She's well-known for making waves in the wellness industry by challenging norms, disrupting systems and mobilizing people to act. She's dedicated her life to kicking down doors and fighting for justice, traits she's inherited from a long line of first-responder ancestors.  Now that I see the lie of white supremacy everywhere (Perfectionism! Productivity! Individualism!), I recognize how thoroughly indoctrinated I am in the system and the harm caused by my own mistake. That repeated realization is tiresome, by design. White supremacy is engineered to keep us severed from self-discovery and the will to continually question and call out. This is challenging, lifetime work.  GUEST BIO Kerri Kelly is the founder of CTZNWELL, a movement that is democratizing well-being for all. Kennae Miller (she/her) was born in Frankfurt, Germany in a strong military family and was raised on Arapaho and Cheyenne Indigenous land (now known as Colorado Springs, CO) where her father completed his military career and her family planted their roots. While living in Colorado and being exposed to many different experiences and forms of art she discovered yoga as a junior in high school. Initially lured by the invitation of a free class for relaxation as she navigated her teenage years she enjoyed the calmness of mind a yoga practice provided for her. It was only after the beginning of her parent’s difficult divorce was she able to observe and benefit in different aspects of life, from focus to self-inquisition, stemming from a yoga practice. Kennae credits the practice of yoga as the only place she could go to just be herself and relax her mind. In Spring 2005 she enlisted in the United States Air Force Reserves and as she traveled around the country, found stability in continuing her yoga practice. As Kennae approached motherhood in 2012, she dreamed of having more freedom outside of wearing a uniform where her individuality and desire to serve others could be of better use. She recalls in 2013 Tweeting, that she would become a Yoga Instructor and own a yoga studio. In 2015 she completed her first Yoga Alliance compliant 200-hour teacher training at Hawaii Yoga Institute on the island of O’ahu, Honolulu, Hawaii. She has since furthered her knowledge base by training with Dr. Gail Parker on Restorative Yoga for Race-Based Trauma Injury, Gentle Yoga, Restorative Yoga, Yoga Nidra with Tracee Stanley and Chanti Tacoronte-Perez, and Reiki. She has also attended CTZN Summit and Wanderlust Wellspring with Kerri Kelly, Seane Corn, Michelle Cassandra Johnson, Rev. Angel Kyodo Williams, and Marianne Williamson and Tracee Stanley, which bridges the wellness world and activism. As a yoga instructor or what Kennae likes to call ‘Space holding’, she enjoys sharing her truth, of difficulties and triumphs, and what she has learned on her journey to hold space and encourage others along their journey. Kennae believes as she continues to grow as an individual through her personal practice, she has been able to learn and experience more of all yoga as to offer. Her goal now is liberation and to become a good ancestor by holding sacred and brave space for others to reconnect with their truth and live it daily on and off their yoga mat to transform their lives and thus the world around them. Kennae is a giver that enjoys pouring back into people and the community through her time, talents, and skills. Because of this Kennae is a strong believer in connecting with nature through urban farming, reconnecting with ancestral and cultural practices, community skills classes and yoga experiences for each individual. In the future, Kennae strives to further her training to better serve the members of her community through the use of Yoga Therapy, Ayurveda, essential oils, Reiki, and other holistic healing therapies. Kennae is the founder of Transformation Yoga, a community of yogis utilizing tools of yoga and meditation to serve marginalized, underserved, and underrepresented communities in (Kusso land) South Carolina with a framework of anti-racism and oppression and the reduction of harm. Kennae is also the co-founder of Enough, where inclusively they bridge yoga, racial and social justice together to provide funding and awareness to local issues and grassroots organizations owned and led by BPOC. Transformation Yoga Studio opened in December 2019 to provide a home and brave space for healing and transformative work on a person, community and collective level. Good day to you all! I have a special announcement to share with you today.TRIOS 01: lo-fi chamber electronica is available today. This is my first release in six years. But if you read my newsletter and listen to the show you probably know that a lot of music has been brewing.I’ve been through a lot of changes: personal, geographical, spiritual and sonic among others. And this new music is definitely a departure from my brand. I’m planting my flag here as an instrumental composer, in parallel to my songwriting and other production work. You can click PLAY above to hear track one, or click here to go to the album page.A bit about the sound: I’m taking the sound and feel of the cello from inside the fiber. People like to mystify “the cello” as this beautiful, resonant, soaring thing but I’m all about the guts of it. Finding the bonkers noises it wants to make when not spotlit on a concerto stage or brooding in the sad part of a film score. The cello is FUN to mess around with and I’d like to share some of that fun with you:A bit about the approach: "Trio" in this instance means that there are three live passes: once with the rhythm bits (done directly from the computer using a fascinating program called TidalCycles), and then two live takes followed by minimal editing and a mix. Production standard is strictly wabi-sabi, meaning I emphasized flavor and personality over fidelity and perfection. There’s plenty of bounce and surprise in the music. I’m along for the ride with you.I have so many people to thank for helping me to believe in this music and actually get the thing done. Many of you (in fact the entire Play It Like It’s Music community) are listed in the release notes. On a new definition of politics, and caring for ourselves through this. Kerri is the founder of CTZNWELL, a movement to mobilize the wellbeing community into a powerful force for change. Her work was sparked on 9-11, when she lost her step-dad, a fireman, in the towers. Everyone's vision, path and lived experience is different, and I believe that the vastness of the yogic practiceS teach us how to be in our truth and hold space for others to be in theirs.Learning is a lifelong process, but some of the people I have studied with are Peter Rizzo of Bhava Yoga (500-Hour Yoga Teacher Training, 2001), Alan Finger of ISHTA Yoga (Yoga Teacher Training Bridge Program for meditation and subtle body, 2008), Mia Borgatta of Lila Yoga and Wellness (Pre-Natal Yoga Teacher Training, 2012), Lara Kohn-Thompson and Beth Donnelly-Caban of Integral Yoga (Pre-Natal Yoga Teacher Training, 2016), Dr. Naina Marballi (Ayurveda Shirodhara Training, 2017), Sarah Tomlinson in the Harish Johari lineage of Yantra and Ayurveda.Currently I am involved in studies with social change and spiritual leaders such as Michelle Cassandra Johnson, author of Skill In Action, Kerri Kelly, founder of CTZNWELL, Susanna Barkataki, creator of the Honor {Don't Appropriate} Yoga Summit and Workbook, and Kelley Palmer, creator of Peacefilled Mama and co-founder of The Sanctuary in the City.I am also developing a Pre-Natal Yoga Teacher Training and Post-Natal programs and continue to mentor yoga teachers informally and as apprentices. You can connect with me at www.brooklynyogalife.com.Norman BlairNorman has been practising yoga since the early 1990s and teaching yoga since 2001. He has studied deeply with teachers such as Sarah Powers, Richard Freeman, and Alaric Newcombe. He loves the way yoga has helped him become more embodied, more conscious, and more focused. His approach is about enabling accessibility, encouraging acceptance and deepening awareness. He likes (in no particular order) chocolate, Star Trek, standing on his head, resting on bolsters, and going for walks across Hampstead Heath. A philosophy of practice for him is succinctly summarised by cellist Pablo Casals. When interviewed at the age of 93, Pablo Casals said that he practiced for three hours a day. When asked why, he replied: “I'm beginning to see some improvement”.Norman believes that yoga teachers need to speak out and stand up. That all of us can greatly benefit from co-operation and collaborating rather than wall-building and competition. Norman lives and teaches in London/UK. What is the relationship between politics and spirituality? How can we harness our drive for personal wellness into civic engagement? While the separation of church and state is one of our country's founding principles, spiritual faith has often been at the center of positive political change. In this episode, we continue the conversation we started with Marianne Williamson by talking to two women whose political activism grew out of their personal journeys: Congressional Candidate Julie Oliver, and founder of CTZNWELL, Kerri Kelly. Spirituality can unite us in a way political discourse often fails us; what we need right now is to recognize and unify around our common destiny as humans living together on this earth. Finding the intersection of healing and justice, particularly in the wellness and yoga world, is one of the central themes of this podcast. It was a delight and an honor to interview Kerri Kelly, founder of CTZNWell, and hear her thoughts on how we can do better in the capitalistic, culturally appropriative, high vibes obsessed yoga industry while not falling into the trappings of self-neglect and perfectionism. Who Is Allowed To Be Well? Yoga, mindfulness, and all manner of "wellness" practices have become a big business. As western culture encounters the wisdom of other cultures, it often appropriates and co-opts that wisdom, with the result being that many of these mind-body wellbeing practices are now seen as the provenance of the wealthy and privileged.  Kerri Kelly came to yoga after years in a corporate marketing career left her burnt out and disconnected. As she experienced her own personal healing, she started to ask deeper questions about who had access to these practices and what responsibility the privileged had to the rest of the suffering world. In this episode we discuss the ways in which wellbeing is intricately connected to movements for justice. Note: Kerri joins us from her coworking space, so you may hear some background noise. Kerri is the founder of CTZNWELL, an emerging movement to mobilize people into a powerful force for wellbeing for all. She spent seven years as Executive Director of the non-profit Off the Mat, Into the World and is currently on faculty. She is relentless in her commitment to elevating leaders, groups and projects to next-level social change makers through her work with The Catalyst Collective, an innovative consultancy designed for mission-based individuals, groups, and organizations that want to be successful and make a difference in the world. Kerri Kelly, the founder of CtznWell, shares how her journey into self-care was a radical shift in her life, but still imperfect because of her perfectionist tendencies. She shares how she defines the wellness industry and how it exploits people. She says well-being is really the opposite because it's rooted in interdependence and is a systemic approach. Next, we discuss how one can have boundaries in a community approach to self-care. In particular, we explore how self-worth is necessary to believe you are worthy of the care that boundaries provide. She shares how she believes her perfectionism is rooted in systems of oppression that exist in our society. Then we move into how she discovered that well-being for people with privilege is about community care. Whereas, for people who have less privilege, choosing self-care is radical. We then discuss how leaving people behind is leaving people behind and how sometimes that means letting go of winning or getting credit. Finally, we discuss how to redistribute power and privilege so people have access to the resources they need for self-care! The transcription for this episode can be found here.
