Boston-bestie Mandy Connor returns to talk about four movies. She and Scotty start with the best of the bunch: the truly frightening 2024 Irish mystery-horror film "Oddity," by writer/director Damian Mc Carthy and featuring a standout performance from Carolyn Bracken. They then shift gears with 2020's oddball but impressive indie psychological drama/sci-fi horror movie "Horse Girl," directed by the late Jeff Baena and co-written by star Alison Brie. Things take a marked turn for the worse with this year's "Until Dawn," a severely undercooked and trope-heavy adaptation of the beloved PlayStation game. They finish off with the promising (but ultimately disappointing) "Heretic" (2024), starring Hugh Grant, Chloe East, and Sophie Thatcher, and written/directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. Scotty and Mandy also give some love to the recent trailer for "The Long Walk," and Mandy sings the praises of "Antrum: The Deadliest Film Ever Made" (2018). WARNING: Scotty and Mandy tried to avoid major spoilers for most of the movies discussed, but you should proceed with caution nonetheless. To be honest, they didn't try all that hard for "Until Dawn." In the first half of this two-part episode, author Rae Wilde ("Merciless Waters," I Do Not Apologize For My Position on Men") returns to talk about her upcoming novella "I Can Fix Her" (June 3, CLASH Books). They discuss the terror of "nightmare logic," Rae's interest in exploring toxic sapphic romance, the "Wilde Test" (i.e. decentering men altogether as significant drivers of plot in narrative), the unique lure of obsession, and the hazards of power in relationships. Rae and Scotty also dive into an impromptu conversation about Darren Aronofsky's divisive 2017 psychological horror film "mother!" In the second half, Scotty welcomes Albuquerque-based actor Peter Diseth ("Roswell, New Mexico," "Better Call Saul") to talk about his performance as Jorg in the new satirical horror film "Opus" (2025), starring Ayo Edebiri, John Malkovich, Juliette Lewis, and written/directed by newcomer Mark Anthony Green. Aside from discussing his experience on the film itself, they spend a few minutes on Peter's background in the New Mexico film and theatre scene, explore the fine line between comedy and horror, and consider the trend towards "the horror of politeness" in film like "Opus," "The Invitation" (2015), "Speak No Evil" (2022), and "The Menu" (2022). Scotty talks to award-winning author Rena Mason about her upbringing in both northern California and upstate New York, her early introduction to horror through "Godzilla" and Maurice Sendak's "Where the Wild Things Are," how a bad experience with an English professor, family obligations, and her career as an OR nurse steered her away from a literary career, but how a frustrating encounter with a disappointing "domestic drama" novel (which she thought would have been greatly improved by a third-act appearance by a famous movie slasher) convinced her to give writing a try. She discusses her influences from Stephen King, Shirley Jackson, and Clive Barker, and how her "blender" approach to genre lead to her strange, disturbing--and deeply satisfying--novel "The Evolutionist" (2013, Nightscape Press, winner of the Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in a First Novel). Rena and Scotty also talk about her Jack the Ripper-themed novella "East End Girls" (2013, Cemetary Dance Publications), how she developed her ear for dialogue, the joys (and dangers) of research rabbit-holes, balancing the demands for creating shorter content against the desire to keep writing longer work, and more. And Rena extols the virtues of the 1973 British occult biker movie "Psychomania"...which unfortunately Scotty didn't get to watch beforehand because of a weather-related mishap with his Internet (c'est la vie). Scotty talks to Bram Stoker and Shirley Jackson Award-winning author, editor, anthologist, and publisher Eric J. Guignard about growing up in sunny southern California, how his early interest in "Hardy Boys" adventure novels combined with his fascination with the short horror tale to craft his own unique sensibility, and how--after the 2008 financial crash--he finally decided to pursue his dreams of becoming a writer. Scotty and Eric then do a deep dive into Eric's award-winning collection ""That Which Grows Wild: 16 Tales of Dark Fiction" (2018, Cemetary Dance), and discuss Eric's Stoker-nominated novel "Doorways to the Deadeye" (2019, Journalstone) Eric also talks about taking over and operating the horror press Dark Moon Books, his passion for publishing quality fiction anthologies, and what it's like editing legendary authors like Joe R. Lansdale and Bentley Little. And, of course, they spend a few minutes at the end talking about a movie. This time the film in question is the underrated direct-to-video prequel "From Dusk Till Dawn 3: The Hangman's Daughter"--a surprisingly effective mashup of the Spaghetti Western and the B-vampire flick. Scotty talks to author, editor, and publisher Aric Sundquist about growing up a "Yooper" in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, and how his mother's love of Stephen King and Dean Koontz, sparked his early interest in dark fiction. Aric discusses the influence of Koontz, King (especially his 1978 collection "Night Shift" and the subsequent 1985 anthology film adaptation "Cat's Eye"), Lovecraft, and fantasy writers like Tolkien, Jordan, and Tad Williams on his work, and how Aric's rediscovery of Ray Bradbury's more macabre tales as an MFA candidate in Creative Writing informed his decision to move specifically into writing horror. Aric also talks about the lessons he learned in his creative writing program, and how he applies them to his work as an editor and publisher at Dark Peninsula Press, the independent publishing company he founded in 2019. He and Scotty talk about the anthologies Dark Peninsula Press has produced (spoiler alert: Scotty's stories have appeared in just about all of them), and Aric outlines his vision for the company's future. And, of course, they talk about Aric's own writing, from his absurdist comic take on cosmic horror with his novella "Serious Applicants Only" (2021, Dark Peninsula Press) to his terrifying, Joyce Carol Oates-inspired short story "The Run" (2014, "Night Terrors III"). Ottone about growing up on Long Island, his decision to leave his job as a copywriter and become a teacher while also pursuing a career as a writer, and the pushback he received writing horror while working toward an MFA in Children's Literature. Robert also discusses the importance of writing as an outlet for grief, his early forays into publishing, and major influences from the brilliant John Langan to Nickelodeon's "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" Robert and Scotty also talk about how fears around both pregnancy and parenthood informed his acclaimed novel "The Vile Thing We Created" (2023, Hydra Publications), and Robert explains how a teenage in-joke between friends inspired his blood-spattered recent book "Curse of the Cob Man" (2023, Weird House Press). Scotty talks to author Larry Hinkle about his excellent new collection "The Space Between" (February 14, Trepidatio Publishing). They discuss how Larry's mother helped him discover his early love of horror, but also how negative experiences in writing workshops pushed him out of fiction writing for nearly three decades. After Scotty cools down from his rant about bad teachers, they talk about the value of brevity in the horror story, balancing humor, horror, and poignancy in Larry's work, time travel narratives, Lovecraft's complicated legacy, how to turn a garbage dump into a living, peeing kaiju, and much more. So why is Scotty having a former segment director for Jimmy Kimmel Live! as a guest on his horror podcast? Well, aside from being one of his oldest friends, Maureen Bharoocha is also the director of two Lifetime Network thrillers, along with the upcoming teen horror/comedy "The Prank" (March 15, from Iconic Events). Scotty and Maureen talk about her upbringing in a mixed Catholic/Muslim household, their time in film school together as argumentative "natural contrarians," Maureen's uncanny ability to turn a job at an upscale Beverly Hills bakery into a legitimate filmmaking career, how making "women in peril" movies for Lifetime is sort of like the modern-day Roger Corman school of low-budget filmmaking, how she thinks about the balance between horror and comedy, what it's like giving notes to movie legends like Keith David and Rita Moreno, and a whole lot more. Of course, they also discuss Thom's classically bonkers apocalyptic teen horror comedy "Night of the Comet" (1984). In this wide-ranging conversation, Scotty and Thom cover such topics as creative inspiration, the joys and challenges of working within low budgets, how to make one America's largest cities appear to be empty, New Mexico's unique cinematic gifts, the process of having one's work "healed" over time, and much more. Boston-bestie Mandy Connor returns to talk about two movies and a novel. She and Scotty begin with their disappointment in the 2023 Heather Graham vehicle "Suitable Flesh," a supposed "spiritual successor" to the classically bonkers 1980s Stuart Gordon films "Re-Animator" (1985) and "From Beyond" (1986). Things improve significantly with their discussion of Karyn Kusama's paranoid masterpiece "The Invitation" (2015) and the superlative 2023 folk-horror novel "Old Country" by Matt and Harrison Query. Mandy also has a few positive words at the end about Joe Hill's new novelette "The Pram." WARNING: Moderate spoilers for "Suitable Flesh," "The Invitation," and "Old Country." We tried to stay away from big reveals, but if you want to go into any of these blind, you might want to hold off on this episode for a bit. On episode #32 of Josh's Worst Nightmare Oddcast, host Josh Schlossberg goes on an expedition with Daniel Braum, author of UNDERWORLD DREAMS, to where the natural world meets the supernatural in horror fiction.
In this episode, we are very excited to have author Daniel Braum. Daniel's fiction has been classified as fantasy, science fiction, and horror but he prefers the good old-fashioned term of fiction, which when he was growing up simply meant a story where anything could happen. His stories frequently defy category and reside in the fuzzy areas between genres, utilizing and combining genre elements to produce tales that are wholly unique.Daniel's short works have appeared in numerous anthologies and publications. He has also published collections of his short stories and two novels. We discussed the challenge, rewards, and development of a cross-genre story. Daniel tells us that others actually categorized some of his work as horror and he learned about the genre from Cemetery Dance Magazine and Ellen Datlow's The Best Horror of the Year Anthologies. Daniel shares his creative process and how setting deeply influences his story development. We talk about the way he effectively communicates universal themes in his writing in such a subtle and impactful way.We chat about Daniel's story Hand of Fire which appears in The Jewish Book of Horror edited by Josh Schlossberg and the importance of having spaces for stories of this vein. Brenda compared it to UBO by Steve Rasnic Tem.Daniel hosts the New York Ghost Story Festival that aims to bring back ghost stories to Christmas time. He tells us how it came about and why. We discuss the impressive array of paranormal and cryptid subjects that appear in Daniel's writing.Daniel reads from his short story, How to Stay Afloat Without Drowning, which can be found in his collection Underworld Dreams or The Best Horror of the Year, Volume 12.Find more about Daniel here: https://bloodandstardust.wordpress.com/and on his Amazon Author Page.Brenda is here: https://brendatolian.com/Joy is here: https://www.joyyehle.com/**When you purchase through links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission that will be used to continue to bring our audience great horror content. *Disclaimer: Reference to any specific product or entity does not constitute an endorsement or recommendation by the Podcasters.
