Kam returns to Hawaii, where he spent much of his childhood, for spring break with a few college friends who make a mockery of the ancient tribal warriors and protectors of the land. He initially joins them to fit in, but has to make a difficult decision when the crew is confronted by the Night Marchers.
Howdy, campers! In this spine-chilling episode, we delve into the eerie phenomenon of the Dark Watchers and the Night Marchers. Imagine being alone in the dead of night, sensing an ominous presence, and hearing the distant sounds of drums and chants. These tales, rooted in Native American and Hawaiian lore, explore the mysterious entities that haunt the shadows. We begin with the enigmatic Dark Watchers of California's Santa Lucia Mountains. These towering shadowy figures, often seen at dusk or dawn, have been part of local legends for centuries. From Native American oral traditions to Spanish settlers' accounts, and even immortalized in the works of John Steinbeck and Robinson Jeffers, the Dark Watchers continue to mystify those who encounter them. Are they mere optical illusions, or something far more sinister? Next, we journey to Hawaii to uncover the legend of the Night Marchers. These spectral warriors, said to be the spirits of ancient Hawaiian chiefs and warriors, march through the night, heralded by the sounds of conch shells and war drums. Those who encounter them must show proper respect to avoid a violent death. Are they guardians of ancient traditions, or something even more otherworldly? Join your camp counselors, Tyler Bence and Woody Brown, as they share spine-tingling stories, dissect various theories, and try to unravel the mysteries of these shadowy entities. Whether you're a skeptic or a believer, this episode is packed with eerie tales and thought-provoking insights that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Scotty talks to author, editor, and publisher Aric Sundquist about growing up a "Yooper" in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, and how his mother's love of Stephen King and Dean Koontz, sparked his early interest in dark fiction. Aric discusses the influence of Koontz, King (especially his 1978 collection "Night Shift" and the subsequent 1985 anthology film adaptation "Cat's Eye"), Lovecraft, and fantasy writers like Tolkien, Jordan, and Tad Williams on his work, and how Aric's rediscovery of Ray Bradbury's more macabre tales as an MFA candidate in Creative Writing informed his decision to move specifically into writing horror. Aric also talks about the lessons he learned in his creative writing program, and how he applies them to his work as an editor and publisher at Dark Peninsula Press, the independent publishing company he founded in 2019. He and Scotty talk about the anthologies Dark Peninsula Press has produced (spoiler alert: Scotty's stories have appeared in just about all of them), and Aric outlines his vision for the company's future. And, of course, they talk about Aric's own writing, from his absurdist comic take on cosmic horror with his novella "Serious Applicants Only" (2021, Dark Peninsula Press) to his terrifying, Joyce Carol Oates-inspired short story "The Run" (2014, "Night Terrors III"). Those who have visited Hawaii have experienced its natural beauty, soothing lifestyle, and the charm and friendliness of the inhabitants. However, only a select few may have encountered what the locals know and revere – the supernatural entities and legends that are still active and enduring. Some, like seeing "Madame Pele," can invigorate awe and wonder, while others can be terrifying. One of the latter and seemingly more prevalent is encountering the Night Marchers. They usually appear as a column of warriors floating above the ground along a predetermined path, weapons or torches in hand. Many report only hearing their presence in the form of unexplainable beating drums or the ghostly blowing of a conch shell. And just seeing them, it's said, ensures a disappearance or violent death to the witness if the proper respect isn't paid in their presence. But what is their origin story, and what do they want? Are they soldiers defeated by King Kamehameha I advancing towards a counterattack or seeking revenge? Or are they keepers and enforcers of ancient Hawaiian cultural laws and mores? To help us explore these questions and relay some of his personal experiences, tonight's guest is Kamuela "Kamu" Kaneshiro. As a native Hawaiian, content creator, and podcaster for 20 years, Kamu has extensive knowledge of the lore and heritage of his homeland. His royal lineage might even protect him from these fearsome spectral guardians. Join us for a fascinating discussion as we warily watch for the Night Marchers of Hawaii. Tuesday, November 21, 2023. On this week's Earthling Entertainment Joe and Ryan talk about Hawaii's Night Marchers & Alabama's Hell's Gate Bridge! Then, scientists observe the first ever case of monkey-to-monkey prostitution. Famous British actor John Cleese claims to have killed a man. There's a new documentary exploring the infamous Star Wars holiday special. What actor has been cast as the next Lex Luther? What about the next Reed Richards? All this and more on this week's episode of Earthling Entertainment.
Troy and Spencer talk about three urban legends that may give you the spooks! La llorona is known in many parts of the world but most famously comes from Central and South America. Night Marchers are rumored to be fallen soldiers in Hawaii that protect the island but some believe they may have more dark intentions for those that encounter them. Goatman's Bridge in Denton Texas is known to be a place where dark spirits reside due to the tragedy that happened there in the late 1930's. Spencer and Troy also do a classic Thought Dawgs Draft. If you're interested in more stories from Obake, check out his YouTube channel, Ghosts of Hawaii. Produced by Chris Hambrick, original score by Richard Haig, artwork by Teo Ducot
ekb* is back this week to take a deep dive with us into the Hawaiian legend of the Night Marchers. They rise from the ocean, float along the ground with no feet, holding torches, blowing into conch shells, bang on drums, and insist you mind your own damn business. Seriously, hit the ground when you hear those drums. We also discover what happens when 3 ADHD folks come together for an internet show. Turns out it's the same thing that happens when 2 do, except that - hey look! A quarter!! Sources used in today's episode are: Wikipedia.org To-Hawaii.com Olukai.com erin k. bailey
On this episode, we are very excited to welcome back author Daniel Braum (see episode 18). Daniel Braum writes “strange tales” in the tradition of Robert Aickman. The all-new Cemetery Dance Publications edition of his first short story collection The Night Marchers and Other Strange Tales is out May 19th.Cemetery Dance Publications will be releasing his novella The Serpent's Shadow in Fall 2023.We talk to Daniel about the re-release of his first short story collection, The Night Marchers and Other Strange Tales. Daniel tells us how it was to revisit these stories and about the gorgeous cover that Dan Sauer created for it. We ask about his hope for the collection. We pick Daniel's brain about changes in the industry that he has seen since this collection first came out. We also chat about story revisions, story endings, and other areas of rewrites that are challenging. We asked Daniel about the reoccurring elements of water and music in his work, the answers may intrigue you. We asked how Daniel creates such rich settings and characters and joins them together for some unforgettable stories. We discuss the power of the liminal space between the supernatural and science and the human condition.Daniel reads from Music of the Spheres, the opening story of the collection.Daniel Braum can be found here: https://bloodandstardust.wordpress.com/and on his Amazon Author Page.Brenda is here: https://brendatolian.com/Joy is here: https://www.joyyehle.com/**When you purchase through links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission.*Disclaimer: Reference to any specific product or entity does not constitute an endorsement or recommendation by the Podcasters. The episode where Sarah brings us the story of the Night Marchers, sea ghosts from Hawaiian mythology. This might be our first Hawaiian story! This episode will bring you many catch phrases, such as “you made Paul Revere dirty”, and Lindsey will once again, realize she's been pronouncing a word wrong her entire life. Between that and Boydston making dirty jokes, it's a miracle Sarah can finish this story. www.thetipsyghost.com Find us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok @thetipsyghost Email us your stories at thetipsyghost@gmail.com Show your support when you subscribe, leave a great review, & give us a 5 star rating— it really helps!
The Night Marchers - Hawaiian FolkloreSome Hawaiian's believe that when you die, your spirit remains and watches from another realm and according to Hawaiian legend, the Night Marchers, Huakai Po in native tongue, are said to be the ghosts of long dead warriors who were tasked with protecting a sacred King, Chief or Chiefest. In life, they would proceed the Chief in the procession, and those lower in status, would have to remove their clothes, lie face down on the earth and place their hands behind their heads as they were deemed unworthy to look upon the sacred cavalcade as it passed. Ancient Hawaiian law, also forbade any commoner to look upon the body parts of certain Kings or Chiefs, if caught doing so, they would ultimately lose their life, being destroyed instantly by one of the deadly warriors.Introduction & Episode 1 of Uncharted MysteriesStory 1Story 2 Thank you hakunomiyaThanks so much for listening and we'll catch up with you again next week for some more true, scary stories.Sarah and Tobie xxEmail us your stories - thewhisperingwoodspodcast@gmail.comJoin us on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/thewhisperingwoodspodcast/Join us on Twitter - https://twitter.com/thewhispwoodsJoin us on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/thewhisperingwoodspodcastVisit our Website - https://www.thewhisperingwoodspodcast.com/ Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Hawaii is a land of beauty, culture, and history. It is also home to ghostly warriors clothed in decorated helmets and cloaks who move from sacred location to sacred location guiding high-ranking Ali'i (ruler) spirits. They are often recognized by their raised torches and the sound of conch shells, to the beat of primitive pounding drums. The ghostly pilgrimage must never be interrupted for those that lock eyes upon them are doomed to a violent death or worse. A vast number of Hawaii families have either had an encounter or know of someone who has. Night marchers, known as huaka'i pō in the Hawaiian language, are death-dealing ghosts. Folklore describes them as a group of spirits – sometimes traveling with ancient Hawaiian gods or goddesses in their midst – that march down the mountainside after sunset. A certain movie taught us that ohana means family... and that remains true even in the afterlife! As we whisk ourselves away to the beautiful island chain of Hawaii, you notice that there may be more around you than luau's and rich cuisine. When you hear a storm approaching, with the echoing sounds of chanting and drums all around you, it may be a foreboding sign of the ancestor warrior spirits known as the Night-Marchers. While many enthusiasts may try to catch a glimpse of this unstoppable procession, you will find out very quickly why you should never make eye contact... death will surely follow! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tooclosepodcast/support

But there is another reason to avoid the marshes and swamps… as they contain evil spirits and demons. (Swamp Demons) *** Those who venture down one particulary eerie New Jersey roadway report restless spirits, a haunted lake, and glowing orbs of light. (Shades of Death Road) *** Did an extraterrestrial invasion take place in Bowling Green, Kentucky? One woman insists it did. (Aliens in Kentucky) *** They arise from the ocean like a small army, and they can kill with a single look into your eyes. Beware the spirit ranks… the night marchers. (Deadly Stare of the Night Marchers) *** If the dream world feels just as real as the waking one - at least while we are in it - how can we know for sure that we're not currently living in a dream, a dream from which we may one day wake up? (Is Life a Dream?) *** Always mocked for his size, Don Gaskins was intent on getting the last laugh… and hitchhikers were his preferred victims.
