Separately, the scarcity and unaffordability of housing in Clare is said to be keeping many families in Clare in a cycle of emergency accommodation. The Simon Communities of Ireland's latest Locked Out of the Market report has found that just 33 properties nationwide were available to rent within the discretionary rate of the Housing Assistance Payment Scheme in October, which is ten fewer than in June. The most recent Government figures show 75 people are currently availing of emergency accommodation in Clare, while a total of 182 children are homeless in the Midwest region. Regional Accommodation Manager with Midwest Simon, Jonathan Shinnors says even when rental properties are available in Clare, they're beyond the reach of many struggling families.

The mental health of Clare's young people is said to be taking a hit because there's "nowhere to rent" and "nowhere to buy". A new report from the National Youth Council of Ireland has found that housing and the cost of living are the issues of most concern to young people in this country. Following extensive surveying of people between the ages of 18 and 29 nationwide, the National Youth Council of Ireland has published 'State of our Young Nation" report. The findings show, arguably unsurprisingly, that housing and the rising cost of living are the greatest for concerns for young people, having been cited by 76% and 62% respectively. At 48%, almost half of participants are dissatisfied with their current housing situations, while more than half have experienced an increase in their rental or mortgage payments in the last year. The latest RTB figures show the average rent for a new tenancy in Clare has risen by almost 20% to €1,145 in the space of a year and there are currently just 18 properties to rent here on Daft.ie. While, the average price from a home in this county is up by nearly 10% to €256,174. Ardnacrusha native and Fianna Fáil local election Rachel Hartigan believes supply needs to be rapidly increased to address the scarcity of places for young people to live. A few months back, like six or more, I sponsored a design competition on past guest JT Smith's The Game Crafter. The competition was to design a lunchtime game. It had to be playable in a lunch hour and appropriate for work. There were 77 entries! Of those, seven were selected to be finalists. Those seven were then shipped to me to playtest. I took all of these to work to play with my coworkers. I mean, that was literally the purpose of the competition.So, with the help of 2 or 3 of my coworkers each day, we played all seven games. Some were instant successes requiring another play, hopefully with a different player count. Some were not so lucky. As a group, we narrowed down the finalists to the top three. In the end, we made the decision to award Locked Out by Little Rhombus Games as the winner.In this episode, I am joined by René Uittenbogaard, the designer of Locked Out. We talk about the usual questions, but also about his game.  He also had a lot of great game suggestions. Mike Kanakos is extremely active in the PowerShell community, so getting the opportunity to highlight all his contributions was pretty awesome for us.
