Along the way Dave goes on Old Man Rant ™ about how tough it was before corporate video chains took over the video rental market.  Then we dive right into a brief history of home video rentals and how capitalism killed the mom and pop video stores. (It is somehow relevant, we swear) before finally getting to the main story about Robert Bork. (It's OK if you don't know who that is, we didn't either.) We explain how the guy who did Dick Nixon's dirty work gets nominated by Ronald Reagan to the Supreme Court and everyone gets super pissed by the end of the story. (It really is a wild ride on this one!) Finally we explain why all of this resulted in politicians feeling safe when they rented their hard core porn at their local video store. (You know the stuff behind the swinging doors in the back, you dad went in there while you were looking for Star Wars movies.) Today's guest makes me feel artificially intelligent. Welcome back Fredrik Sareoa of Datarock. And with his band's new release and their use of AI in different aspects of the album, I thought he'd be the perfect person to have on for a discussion about artificial intelligence in music. But that's not all we talk about. Fredrik gives new bands some wardrobe advice, how he's always worried about being sued, Superman's sex life, what he REALLY wants people to know about Datarock's music. For this episode we read the Datarock blog post Fusing core imagery and chemistry to model stratigraphy. Perhaps more interesting that the foundation of Datarock is built on Aussie rules football is some of the advice that Brenton Crawford, one of the the company's founders has to impart: that we can get distracted by what we 'need' from a university in order to get the geoscience job we want. He goes on to counsel that getting involved in a community of your choosing, albeit geochemistry, data science, or some other sector, can be a better investment of your time and energy. Importantly, if you have interested in transitioning to data science, remember that your knowledge of the geosciences is infinitely more important than an additional degree in data science - your ability to make an impact on your team is greater simply because you understand the nuances of the data you are working with. It was in commercials, video games, TV shows, and I'm sure some other synchronizations Fredrik has forgotten about. That led to the band playing over 1000 shows in 36 countries. But it all kind of snuck up on them. Take the first festival they played in Australia. They thought they were going to be on some little side stage next to the toilets. Turns out they were on the main stage supporting James Brown! That has allowed Fredrik to do some amazing things. He performed Datarock: The Musical with a full symphony orchestra. But they only had one day of rehearsal. He's also released an album called The Rona Diaries where he plays with the BIT20 String Ensemble, again with very little preparation. Consistency in our data collection, ore sorting at the mine face and detailed characterization of mine waste, can all lead to value creation coupled with more responsible mining. They analyze images and are creating expert in loop systems to augment what the geoscientist can do.  Brenton Crawford, Chief Operations Officer and founder, lays out why the type of work they do is important for our industry. Mine resource models are constrained by spacing of data collection.  To solve this problem, MineSense Technologies developed ShovelSense.  Maarten Haest, VP Geoscience explains the technology and the value created by having a system that sorts ore from waste at the mine face.The legacy of mining includes tailings storage facilities. Anita Parbhakar-Fox is at the Sustainable Minerals Institute, University of Queensland specializing in studying tailings, finding the value left behind and the potential for waste to be a resource. We had the pleasure of interviewing Fredrik Saroea of DATAROCK over Zoom video! Fredrik Saroea is the frontman of Norway's bizarre, global indie sensation – DATAROCK.After years touring the world with alternative bangers such as "Fa-Fa-Fa" he now present an entirely different side to his songwritingThe new solo album Rona Diaries was inspired by everything from post-rock (like The Sea and Cake) via hard-core (like Fugazi), noise-rock (like U.S. Maple), space-rock (like Flying Saucer Attack), art-rock (like Blonde Redhead) to Morrissey's indie-classics, Sun Kil Moon's As COVID-19 shut down live music, Saroea started recording in their label YAP Records' studio –YAP HQ in Bergen (Norway) – with DATAROCK drummer Øyvind Solheim helping out engineering & co-producing. The 12 songs jammed in on the 28 minute long album was also mixed by Solheim & Saroea at YAP HQ, and then shipped to UK's legend Mike Marsh (Björk, Massive Attack, Oasis, DATAROCK) for mastering.The artwork was created by the amazing Magnus Voll Mathiassen whom has illustrated everything from Rihanna's Unapologetic album to this years official Oscars rendition.The release on May 28th took place with an internationally streamed concert in Norway's stately Grieg Hall – famous for the most iconic Norwegian black metal recordings. The host of the event was the largest festival in the Nordic counties for art & music; Bergen International Festival (established in 1963). The concert featured musicians from Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and the contemporary ensable BIT20, and later this year the recordings will be released as a live album. We want to hear from you! But in all the fun bits and interesting encounters between Townsend and Liz, the most interesting are the encounters Liz has with herself as she manifests her subconscious in the form of the former Mr. Kaplan played by Susan Blommaert. Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Datarock over Zoom video! 'Tick Tock' is one of the new songs we ended up writing & producing during the Norwegian COVID-19 lockdown - coincidentally kicking in at the exact time we were supposed to tour & celebrate the 15 year anniversary for our debut 'DATAROCK DATAROCK' (2005) - printed first time ever as limited edition translucent, orange vinyl for Record Store Day 2020.Immersing ourselves in the joyful work we did 15 years ago - and at the same time trying to cope with the new (ab)normal - we ended up producing a song somewhat tied in with the post-punk & indie-dance from our 2005 debut: Part affected by the BLM movement and global reactions to police brutality, the political awakening among even the very young, polarizing reactions, rhetorics & the nature of the upcoming (un)presidential US election, and of course parts affected by the intense seriousness of the ongoing pandemic, 'Tick Tock' revolve around the dire need for everyone in the US to vote so our globally interlocked society can hopefully move on in a better direction after November 3rd. For the ones who don't care about lyrics 'Tick Tock' is the sound of desperately trying to enjoy ourselves in the darkest of moments; joy as an act of resistance...Written, arranged, performed & produced by DATAROCK in our own studio.Mixed by the legendary Steve Dub (UNKLE, Roots Manuva, New Order, The Prodigy, Leftfield, Primal Scream, Orbital, Moby, Underworld) whom won the Grammy last year for best electronic album with 'No Geography' by The Chemical Brothers.Mastered by the pioneering engineer Mike Marsh (Stereo MC's, Bjork, Massive Attack, Chemical Brothers, Basement Jaxx, Oasis, Prodigy, Depeche Mode).Released on YAP Records via Sony's The Orchard.We want to hear from you!
