So, this week, we begin with a twist to create our common thought space for today. In the words of Isabel Wilkerson in her interview with Krista Tippet on NPR entitled The Heart is the Last Frontier. And I Quote, "With all due respect, I can't want to!" For some, this is the best of times. For others, it feels like the worst of times. For the wise, it is seen as one season in history. For others, it feels like an impending eternity of uncertainty. Words like 'us' and 'them' no longer define diversity but decree exclusion. Anger has become the overcoat that keeps our raw fear warm. Our country is like an ancient house. I love old houses. But old houses need a lot of work. And the work is never done. And just when you think you've finished one renovation, it's time to do something else. Something else has gone wrong. Sometimes, may need to look down in the basement to find the problem. We may need to go down into our metaphorical basement and see the historical causes and effects of things that need change. Only then can we make humanity-saving decisions. We must then intentionally add radical empathy to our solution. "Empathy is not pity or sympathy in which you look down on someone and feel sorry for them. With sympathy, you may be looking across at someone and feeling bad for them. However, empathy means getting inside of them, understanding their reality, and looking at their situation and saying not, "What would I do if I were in their position?" but, "What are they doing? Why are they doing what they're doing from the perspective of what they have endured?" Today, we are telling the story of one of Fairfax County, Virginia's organizations that has decided that it can want to… An organization that embodies empathy and hope! We are going to walk through the doors of Britepaths of Fairfax County. Britepaths is dedicated to stabilizing clients facing economic crises, fostering personal empowerment, and supporting the needs of children! This week's storyteller is Mr.David Joyner, the Development Manager of Britepaths of Fairfax County, Virginia. Be inspired, learn things, and share.

The move comes after the company repeatedly missed earnings targets, setting off unrest among shareholders that spilled into public view in recent weeks.Last month, major CVS shareholder Glenview Capital began a significant push for changes at the company, CNBC previously reported.CNBC reported last month that CVS' board had engaged strategic advisors to weigh its options, including the potential of a breakup of its insurance and retail businesses.Joyner most recently oversaw the company's pharmacy services business as president of CVS Caremark, a similar position to the one Lynch held before she assumed the top job in February 2021.

Speaking of Higher Ed: Conversations on Teaching and Learning
In this special summer shorts episode, we revisit conversations from the past year to help you gear up for the upcoming semester. Join us as we explore practical strategies and innovative approaches shared by our expert guests. From episode 13, JoAnn Edmond and Jenn Rose kick things off by emphasizing the importance of a learner-centered syllabus. "Creating tools like a syllabus, which can serve as a blueprint for your course, is crucial," they explain. By utilizing templates and resources from the Center for Instructional Innovation, faculty can design syllabi that not only guide course structure but also foster a community-focused learning environment. This approach, they argue, can directly support institutional goals like improving student retention. We explore the concept of Ungrading from episode 17 with Drs. Candis Bond and Trent Kays. They describe Ungrading as an "assessment and evaluation approach that favors process over traditional grading," focusing on formative assessment and continuous feedback. By shifting away from the conventional A-F scale, this method aims to enhance intrinsic motivation and promote a deeper engagement with the learning process. "It's a mindset, a philosophy," they assert, encouraging educators to create environments where students can focus on learning rather than merely aiming for a grade. Finally, from episode 15, Dr. David Joyner discusses the transformative potential of AI in education. He highlights the need to adapt assessments to maintain their effectiveness in the face of new AI tools like ChatGPT. He advises, "We must make certain changes to keep our assessments reliable and effective demonstrations of student understanding." Dr. Joyner also sees AI as a means to elevate educational outcomes, enabling students to tackle more ambitious projects and achieve deeper understanding. His insights are complemented by his publication "A Teacher's Guide to Conversational AI" and a professional certificate program available on edX. Explore these ideas and more, visit augusta.edu/innovation for full episodes and additional resources.

Speaking of Higher Ed: Conversations on Teaching and Learning
Should I discuss AI with my students? How can I benefit from using AI? In this episode of Speaking of Higher Ed, David Joyner, PhD, joins us to explore these questions and how AI is transforming education, for students and educators. ChatGPT generated significant discussion when it launched in November 2022. Now, with more than a year of growing in understanding about generative AI, we are discovering what changes are necessary in the classroom. Joyner provides valuable insights from his research and classroom experiences, addressing educators seeking basic knowledge about ChatGPT and those aiming to deepen their understanding of generative AI. Educators aren't the only ones adapting to technologies like ChatGPT; students are also adjusting. This technology holds the potential to facilitate faster learning and improvement in targeted areas. However, it may require adjustments to assessments to maintain the desired level of rigor in evaluating student mastery of the material. We also discuss Joyner's new publication, A Teacher's Guide to Conversational AI, and the professional certificate program he developed, available on the edX online learning platform. Speaking of Higher Ed is produced by the Center for Instructional Innovation at Augusta University. Find more episodes and resources on our show page. WHQR sat down with all seven candidates for Wilmington's City Council — two incumbents and five newcomers who are running for three seats. On this episode of The Newsroom, an interview with challenger David Joyner.
It's been stated that Jon's favorite soundtrack ever is for the John Hughes film Some Kind of Wonderful from 1987. We've heard from artists featured on it, including the music supervisor Tarquin Gotch, but this time we're hearing from some of the lesser known bands. We start with Alison Marr of Lick the Tins whose cover of "I Can't Help Falling in Love With You" plays over the closing credits. Next up is David Joyner and Linda Hall of Blue Room who had "Cry Like This" in the film, but also had "I'm Afraid" in Ferris Bueller's Day Off and a cover of "Every Time You Go Away" in Planes Trains & Automobiles. And lastly we hear from Tom Ashton and Rosie Garland of the March Violets who not only had two songs in the film ("Turn to the Sky" and "Amanda Jones"), but also appeared in the club scene in the movie! Each one has their own unique story in and out of the movie. Enjoy!

Two very different performances from Boscombe sees contrasting views from AFC Bournemouth fans, who firstly react at full-time after beating Bristol City 3-2 in a scoreline which possibly flattered the opposition. Aside from a few minutes at either end of the game, Bournemouth looked sharp and strong, and whilst the Robins showed spurts of impetus, the Cherries defence and Mark Travers were up to the task, with the latter providing a crucial save when it mattered! Contrast this though with a poor poor showing in the Midlands. Sam, Tom, Jeff and Steve react in a windy West Bromwich after AFC Bournemouth put in a poor showing against the Baggies at The Hawthorns, mustering not even a single shot on target. It was a display that lacked tempo, desire or technical quality, and whilst the winning streak under referee Keith Stroud's stewardship came to an end, the turgid run against Steve Bruce however continues. Plus, reaction from the four buccaneering Cherries who travelled over six days to deliver humanitarian aid INSIDE Ukraine to people who people who have needed it the most,. The boys re-live the trip with their absorbing stories of concern, comedy, and coincidences. With 13 hours of ferry crossings and 40 hours of driving, John Williams, Gary Francis and Simon Cable have some stories to tell, and with David Joyner also on the mission, we go behind the scenes to watch their video diaries and see raw footage from their incredible effort. Cherries fans jubilantly react after AFC Bournemouth beat Huddersfield Town 3-0 at the John Smith’s Stadium thanks to goals from Jaidon Anthony, Jefferson Lerma and Dominic Solanke. Also, a chat with four Cherries fans who will be driving to Poland to deliver aid for the Ukrainian refugees. The quartet are working with the charity "Help from Bournemouth to Ukraine", and amongst them is former Cherries defender and assistant manager - now AFC Bournemouth summariser for BBC Radio Solent - John "Willo" Williams. The journey will take four days, 2,500 miles, 13 hours of ferry crossings and 40 hours of driving to get the supplies to those who need them the most. They will be taking 2 vans which will mean that they can take 7 tonnes of aid. Travelling will be Willo, Simon Cable, Gary Francis, and David Joyner. Their time is free, and will take two days off work and then drive through the weekend to get there and back; however, the fuel is expensive, the van hire, the insurance and incidentals are quite high and the closer they can get to our target, the closer they can get aid to those who need it the most. In 1940, Germany was sending vital telegrams through neutral Sweden using a sophisticated cipher, and it fell to mathematician Arne Beurling to make sense of the secret messages. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll describe the outcome, which has been called "one of the greatest accomplishments in the history of cryptography." We'll also learn about mudlarking and puzzle over a chicken-killing Dane. Intro: In 1836, three boys discovered 17 tiny coffins entombed near Edinburgh.
