POPULARITY
David M Frees is from Phoenixville, Pennsylvania and in this episode, he will discuss FORCE MULTIPLIERS, a technique, when used correctly, will make podiatrists more powerful, better communicators and far more influential with their patients. Dave Frees has been referred to as the Grandmaster of persuasion and influence by Steve Forbes, Editor-In-Chief of Forbes Magazine and Forbes Media. He's a sought after speaker on leadership, sales and marketing, and has had a close working relationship with podiatrists for many years. Dave is a civilian; however, he has worked closely with the military and armed forces in the United States. He has taken what he has learnt from top negotiators, interrogators and special forces operators to devise a unique method for day-to-day business operations. Topics discussed: Meta-Force Multipliers, Strategic Force Multipliers and Tactical Force Multipliers. Stories work when you imbed them within the content you are delivering to your patients. Meta-Level Ways we can be a more powerful version of who we are. How can we think better Strategic-Level Ideas that guide us in the right direction. Developing systems for all our tactics makes them easier and easier to do. Developing a system for marketing - take the ideas in your head (strategy) to make them a reality (the tactic) Training is a strategic force multiplier. Building a system around training. Record the training Use it online Sell to other podiatrists Using rules and models (OODA LOOP) Get clarity around your purpose, values and mission, and knowing the exact patient you want is strategic. When you know where your ideal patient is, you'll know where to do your marketing. Use this information to decide on the tactic, such as email. Alignment: What we're about to do, is it in alignment with our purpose, values and mission and is it going to be loved and will it help support our ideal patients Tactical-Level Doing a particular type of marketing to get a specific type of patient. It is used to get the right kind of patients. Did it work? Yes, then do more of it. This forms part of your strategy. Meta Level is Mental Level (Mindset) Learning how to stay strong and recover from damage or a downturn in performance is meta-level thinking. With a good mindset, you become way less bothered by problems. Difference Between Persuasion & Influence is INTENT All human communication is manipulative in one way or another. When you tell a joke, you're trying to manipulate the person into laughing. When you teach, you're trying to help someone become a more informed person. When you yell, you may be trying to intimidate. Some people say this is manipulation, but it depends on your intent. Helping someone is not manipulative. Build Trust & Influence Telling the patient the truth builds trust. If an orthotic is not going to help their problem, be truthful. Be aware that patients may be imprecise with their speech, so circle-back with what they said to get more clarity. When you repeatedly give the patient the result they are after, you will become influential, and this is where you want to be. Being influential is not being manipulative. Also, when a patient trusts you, you can make a mistake, and they will forgive you. Deeper Communication When a patient tells you their concern/problem, ask them, "WHAT ELSE?" They will dig deeper and give you more information. Then say, "AND", and the patient will happily give you more information than you would have initially gotten from them. You could also ask: "I'm curious, is there any other reason that you came here today or are there any other outcomes you would like out of this visit today?" or "How would your life be better if…." This communication tool is at the tactical level, and it may not work every time, but don't give up easily. Remind yourself that it didn't work this time; with this patient on this particular issue, it doesn't mean it doesn't work. Stimulus & Response There is usually a stimulus when you get angry, but there will be a small GAP between the stimulus and the response. It would be best if you learned how to put space between the stimulus and the response. A cool little trick is to name that emotion when it occurs and recognise it. "Ohh, that's anger that I'm feeling". Take a deep breath, cultivate the gap and interrupt the response. Interrupting the Gap Confusion often leads to frustration, then anger; however, confusion means you are about to make a breakthrough in your learning. So instead of getting frustrated and angry, change the mental narrative to anticipation. Confusion leads to anticipation of new learnings, and this is a better mindset to get the learning you want. Optimise What's Working Optimise what's working and stop what's not working. It sounds simple, but it's hard for some podiatrists to do. Constantly explore what's working in your business and spend some time hypothesising why it works and can you make it better. Minor tweaks can make a massive difference in the outcome. This episode with David M Frees is a REBROADCAST and it was chosen because the content is so friggin good. It is also the most downloaded episode on It's No Secret with Dr T. If you missed it the first time you'll be glad I'm rebroadcasting and if you did hear this episode the first time you'll be happy as well. David M. Frees is a Trust, Estate and Wealth Preservation Lawyer from Phoenixville Pennsylvania. He is an expert when it comes to persuasion and communication, and on a personal note, Dave is one of the best communicators I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. I think you’ll go back and listen to this episode numerous times because there are so many takeaway points. Here are the highlights: The first and most powerful key to being an excellent communicator, great negotiator and person of influence, is to master the art of listening to the other person. You need to quiet the demons in your head and not be thinking about what you want to say next. When you meet someone, always be looking for something to compliment him or her on, but make it genuine. “Wow, that is a smashing tie”. It takes enormous practice to listen and not automatically respond or jump into the conversation. Everyone you meet is smarter than you at something, and thinking this way sets you up in a very positive mindset right from the start. The other person will sense your positive body language and attitude towards them. You can build trust by confessing something very early in the conversation. If you’re selling a product, you may point out a flaw in certain situations, or if it’s a personal conversation, you may make an admission that may be slightly odd or embarrassing. Just don’t do it in the first 30 seconds. Some people will say that using these techniques is just manipulation, and they are correct; however, all human communication is manipulative in some way, but you need to give up the idea that it’s a bad thing. It’s your INTENT for the outcome that matters. You can manipulate negatively or positively. Where is the best place to learn more about this subject? The language we use, when communicating, can be very powerful and influential. Saying to a child, ‘don’t spill the milk’…puts that image in their head and increases the chance of them spilling the milk. But if you say, ‘keep the milk in the cup’, that’s the image they will see. We see words as images. The tonality of your voice, the speed of your voice and your body language are far more important than the words you use. This is why Barry White was so popular with his female audience. Learning to vary the speed and tone of your voice can be very useful in certain situations. If you want to hurry people up, or slow people down use your voice. It’s essential to go back and re-listen to mentors, previous podcasts and reread books because you’ll have a different mindset year to year and you’ll pick up new things each time. When you make a deal with yourself that you’re going to do something, no matter what, you need to stick to it, but don’t stay with it if it’s not working. Sometimes it is advisable to quit. Persuasion and influence are different. Persuasion is very hard to do because it relies upon you changing someone else’s mind, but over time and by building trust, it is possible; however, influence is where to want to be. Persuasion is part of a bigger goal, and that is to become an influencer. Dave runs an event in Tempe, Arizona every October: Business Black Ops. For the past five years, I have travelled to Arizona to attend an event called Business Black Ops, organised by David M Frees. There are approximately 35 - 40 attendees each year, and it is by far, one of the most dynamic business groups, which is why I already have the 2020 event in my calendar. This year I was asked to give two short presentations, and this weeks podcast episode is my first presentation, Why Niching Is The Future of Small Business. I want to point out that I recorded this episode using a lapel mic and iPhone, so the quality is less than optimal, but I enjoyed the LIVE aspect of the recording, and I hope you do as well. “There’s no such thing as true generalists, or if there is you won’t have heard of them”. - Michael Harf Today I discuss: Why it's dangerous to try and take on large companies or businesses head-on. Many small business owners find it challenging to stay focused on the task ahead because of shiny bright lights? And often they let their negative thoughts affect their decision making or lack of decision making and this is where Deb Johnstone from Transformational Pathways Australia comes in. Deb Johnstone is a Mindset and NLP business coach, and I can honestly say she helped me keep my head screwed on when I needed it most and with her advice and guidance also helped me make decisions much faster. How we think and what we say has a significant impact on our actions and how we approach our business life. We often fall into generalisations with our comments that are not true. For example, you may say, no one wants to work part-time in your particular industry, but this is not true. There may not be many people wanting to work part-time, but it's not on one. Your Unconscious Mind Your unconscious mind will delete messages and signs if you keep repeating untrue statements. If you say no one wants to buy your product, use your service or hear you speak, your unconscious mind will delete the positive and highlight the negative. Remember, people not wanting what you have to offer are probably not your Target Market, but there is a market for you, you need to find it. 5 Success Principles of NLP Know Your Outcome Take Action Have Sensory Acquity (Awareness) Behavioural Flexibility Physiology & Psychology of Excellence Know Your Outcomes Before you start a task/activity, you need to know your desired outcome from the start. And it doesn't always need to be huge or life-changing, but it must align with your goals. What do you DON'T HAVE NOW that you WANT TO HAVE after doing this thing Take Action Any action is better than no action at all, and if you're clear on your outcome you will be far clearer on the best action to take, or what is the next best step. People resist taking action because they're afraid they may make the wrong decision, but there is no wrong action, there are just learning opportunities. When you take action, it gives you a chance to learn, which will help you towards your next action. Also doing something once is not enough, it has got to be done many times to build momentum. In fact, it usually takes 90-days to create momentum. Sensory Acquity (Awareness) You need to have awareness around what you're doing and if it is working. You may be given a strategy and told that it would work, but you need to be able to step back and see if it is working. Always measure your results. It doesn't mean you dump the strategy if it is not working, just tweak it. Make small changes and reassess. The way you perceive the world is directly related to your past and present experiences This is why you need to TAKE ACTION so you can create new experiences. No action = No new experiences. DO NOT TRY - If you try something you get trying results because trying is not doing. Behavioural Flexibility You need to practice stepping out of your comfort zone and be prepared to make changes in your strategies, actions your taking, conversations your having with people, beliefs, values, attitude and thinking. Be prepared to change your language and no more using the word TRY. Always be looking for solutions. Giving up is not a solution. Physiology & Psychology of Excellence How you think and what you do with your body affect one another. For example, it's hard to smile when you're looking downwards, and it's hard to frown when you're looking upwards. Therefore your body position affects your mental health. People feel better after exercise and are in a better mood because the brain releases endorphins, adrenaline, serotonin and dopamine. When these chemicals are released, it makes you feel good. If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change. - Wayne Dyer If you have any questions about this podcast episode, please send me an email at tf@tysonfranklin.com, or you can contact Deb Johnstone via her website. Omar Zenhom is the co-creator of the webinar platform WebinarNinja and host of the $100 MBA Show. I was super keen to learn more about webinars and how they can be of benefit to small business. Does having a webinar really help your business and can you make money from running regular webinars? The Shift We open our conversation discussing why he started his podcast show, The $100 MBA, as a daily series, then changed it to a weekly show in 2017 and now in 2018 it's back to a daily series. As your business changes, you've got to change with it. A daily show requires a lot of planning and scheduling and you also need to develop systems around batching, especially if you wanted to take a vacation, but constriction of time creates ingenuity and creativity. The Benefits of Webinars No one cares how much you know, they want to know how much you care and this is the biggest benefit of webinars, they build trust. You can't build trust on a sales page, a youtube video, or a website because there is no interaction. When someone has a question they want it answered straight away and this can only be done on a webinar. Therefore webinars are a great teaching platform. People are also more inclined to buy something from someone they can see. Strengthen Relationships Even though webinars are great for building trust and attracting new clients into your sales funnel, they are also excellent at strengthening relationships with your existing clients. Every business can benefit from webinars and the benefits of WebinarNinja is it's easy to set up. FREE OFFER - The Webinar Blueprint Q & A Webinar To get started a Q & A webinar is an easy way to begin because it requires no preparation. When you're giving advice and answering questions with attendees it will give you some insight into their PAIN POINTS, which can be used to create future webinars. Quitting Social Media Omar quit social media in September 2017 and since then he has got so much time back. He asks 2 good questions: 1. Is being off of social media detrimental to your business? 2. Does business really get done on social media? Monday Morning Tip Add value to your customers' experience in some way and make it a win for them, by creating content. If you like to write, start a blog. If you like video, start a youtube channel, and maybe create an infographic. If it's useful you will be thanked and ranked by Google. Ask yourself, what can I produce that is just helpful? Connect with Omar Zenhom If you want to connect with Omar I would suggest sending an email via his WebinarNinja and $100 MBA websites, since he is currently off social media. 8000 Word Blog - How To Run A Webinar If you have any questions about this podcast episode please email me at tf@tysonfranklin.com or you can leave a comment below. Travis Chappell is a networking master and he resides in Las Vegas Nevada. He is the host of a very successful podcast Build Your Network and Facebook Group Build Your Network BETA. Why Networking? Networking is the best way to accelerate growth in life, regardless if you’re an entrepreneur, a doctor or if you're working 9-5 and working your way up the various management levels. By building relationships with people you will accelerate your career a lot faster. Networking At Conferences You need to have a strategy and plan in place before you attend the conference. Your goal is to build friendships and true real relationships. Don’t over complicate it. Don’t become Networking Ned – the person who runs around throwing business cards in everyone's face and then running off to the next person, but also don't be the other extreme, the person who is too scared to throw business cards around so instead, they do nothing. Expectations Networking at a conference starts before the conference even happens. You need a list of things you really want to accomplish while you’re at this conference Know your expectations: I want to meet twelve new people, or I want to meet three people in a specific niche. You may want to meet someone that does what you do. What are your goals for the conference? You need CLARITY: If you want to meet someone specifically at an event, you need to prepare a few months out, because at the event they will be swamped by people who want to meet them, so you need to stand out from the crowd. Send them a note, a card, or something you know they are going to like (t-shirt). Don't just connect with them on social media. Then when you go up to them at the conference, they will know you straight away. This will help you differentiate yourself from the crowd. Conference Buddy There are two reasons you need a conferencing buddy. 1) it makes introductions much easier, and 2) you’re never standing alone. Smaller Networking Groups Every town has small networking groups such as BNI and Chamber of Commerce, and because these groups usually meet weekly or monthly there's going to be more time to build a long-term relationship, so there’s not as much prep needed prior because you know you’ll see them again next week or month. Unique Value Proposition (UVP) What are you going to say when someone asks, what do you do? You need to think about this and have a good answer prepared. This is your UVP and it needs to be short and sweet. The Eyebrow Test When you tell someone what you do, if their eyebrows go down, you’ve confused them, but if they go up you’ve captured their interest. If you talk too long (60 seconds) and verbally throw up all over them, there’s going to be fewer questions and therefore less engagement. You need to keep the conversation loop open. Social Media Networking Facebook Groups is like attending 12 different networking conferences in one afternoon. Always network in Facebook Groups the right way by adding value to the group. Don't use it to try and promote yourself. Ask questions and also answer questions in the group. Be engaging. Only then will you be able to connect with them as friends and take the relationship further. Profile Photos & Bio If someone is interested in networking with you they will go and look at your social profile, therefore you need a professional or semi-professional headshot, a simple Bio explaining what you do and a good cover image. If Facebook is not your thing then it’s fine to have a photo of your cat. Travis has written a FREE eBook that you can download from his website about improving your social media networking skills - www.buildyournetwork.co/fb Three Tips Put yourself in situations to succeed Don’t be afraid to move where the opportunities are Most people will say YES "THE SHORTEST RUNWAY TO YOUR GOALS IS WHO YOU KNOW" Monday Morning Tip Be Grateful: Start your day focusing on all the positivity in your life and business.
