Sehr beeindruckend! I recently recorded a podcast episode that was intended to be a conversation with Divine, a dedicated entrepreneur selling perfumes and body oils in a bustling university town in Nigeria. Unfortunately, our schedules didn't align, and the conversation didn't happen. However, the insights I prepared for Divine are too valuable to keep to myself, so I'm sharing them here. Divine's primary challenge revolves around customer acquisition. He's tried various strategies, including posters, flyers, and WhatsApp broadcasts, but hasn't seen the results he hoped for. He also struggles with defining his Ideal Customer Profile (ICP), worries about wasted advertising money, and lacks a clear Unique Value Proposition (UVP). Embracing the Challenge of Customer Acquisition If we had had our conversation, I would have emphasized that customer acquisition is a fundamental part of business. As Peter Drucker famously said, "Because the purpose of business is to create a customer, the business enterprise has two—and only two—basic functions: marketing and innovation." Innovation focuses on refining our products and services, while marketing is about bringing customers through the door. Therefore, facing challenges in customer acquisition is not a sign of failure but a normal part of the entrepreneurial journey. Optimizing Traditional Marketing: Flyers and Posters Divine has been using flyers and posters, but perhaps not with the necessary intensity. When it comes to these traditional methods, it's a numbers game. Distributing a few dozen flyers won't cut it. To truly gauge the effectiveness of this approach, you need to distribute at least a thousand, if not more. Here are some strategic locations for distributing flyers in a university town: * Student Union Building: The central hub of student activity. * Student Hostels: Reaching students where they live. * Lecture Halls: Capturing attention between classes. * Libraries: Targeting students focused on their studies. * Off-Campus Student Housing: Reaching those living outside the main campus. * Transportation Hubs: Capturing attention during commutes. Leveraging QR Codes and WhatsApp Broadcasts Effectively Divine also uses QR codes, but he directs users to his website. I believe a more effective approach would be to direct them to a WhatsApp chat or an email conversation. This allows for personalized interactions, which are crucial for building relationships and driving conversions. Regarding WhatsApp broadcasts, it's essential to build an opt-in list. Avoid sending mass messages to everyone in your contacts. Instead, ask people if they want to receive updates and promotions. A simple message like, "Would you like to receive updates on our latest perfumes and offers via WhatsApp?" can work wonders. Reframing Advertising Costs: Optimizing Spending Worrying about wasted advertising money is common, but it's more productive to focus on optimizing your spending. Not every promotional effort will yield immediate results. The goal is to reduce waste and increase effectiveness by: * Targeting: Ensuring your message reaches the right audience. * Messaging: Crafting compelling and relevant communication. * Conversions: Guiding potential customers to take the next step. Uncovering Your Unique Value Proposition (UVP) Your UVP is the reason why customers choose your business. To discover it, ask your best customers why they buy from you. Understanding your UVP will: * Inform your marketing messaging. * Provide ideas for problem statement openers in conversations. * Lead to higher conversion rates. By focusing on these areas, Divine and other entrepreneurs can overcome customer acquisition challenges and build thriving businesses. Remember, persistence, adaptation, and a customer-centric approach are key to success.
Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Kristian Alomá, PhD, is the Founder and CEO of Threadline, a brand-building agency. He is also a lecturer at Northwestern University's Kellogg School Center for Nonprofit Management, where he teaches branding for nonprofits, donor stewardship, storytelling, digital fundraising, and behavior design. With over two decades of experience applying narrative psychology, identity, and behavioral economics to marketing and market research, Kristian has helped some of the world's largest brands, including Coca-Cola, Harley Davidson, and FedEx, improve their narratives. He is also the author of Start with the Story: Brand-Building in a Narrative Economy. In this episode… Advertising and marketing have poor reputations for deceiving customers, often stemming from brands that position themselves as the heroes of their campaigns to manipulate consumers into making purchases. In an economy that relies on stories to make sense of experiences, consumers are the primary drivers. How can you craft a brand story that strengthens your customer relationships? According to behavioral marketer Kristian Alomá, every brand-customer relationship must begin with a story encapsulating your unique value proposition (UVP). To identify your UVP, it's essential to define your target audience's main struggle, your solution to the problem, your company's objective, and the reward customers receive from engaging with you. However, the UVP should only form the basis for your story rather than dictate how it's conveyed to consumers. Instead, you should view your organization from the customer's perspective, informing your approach to storytelling and services. Tune in to this episode of the Up Arrow Podcast as William Harris chats with Kristian Alomá, the Founder and CEO of Threadline, about building a brand story to foster authentic customer relationships. Kristian explains the seven elements of a customer-brand relationship, how to market ethically, and the significance of the narrative economy in brand building.

Michael and Kathryn discussed the importance of a unique value proposition (UVP) in standing out and connecting with others in a business context. They emphasized the need for a clear and concise UVP, recognizing the value of both parties in a transaction, and the significance of regularly revisiting and updating the UVP. They also cautioned against focusing on common features and polarizing topics to attract a wider audience. They emphasized the importance of understanding and articulating one's UVP, as it allows individuals to stand out and connect with others who value their unique qualities. They encouraged listeners to seek feedback from others to gain insight into what makes them unique. They also noted that the UVP should not be a super standard, but rather a simple way to communicate what sets an individual apart. If you wanted to pursue something, and you found out it was a crowded market, would you continue to pursue it, or would it prevent you from starting? A lot of people I talk to don't make the jump because they think a crowded market is a bad thing, but that's just not true. There are many reasons why joining a crowded market can be good! For one, it means there's a demand for that service, whether it's photography, art, coaching, or any other industry. You won't need to educate your audience on it because they already know it's there. Additionally, joining an established market means you have the potential to grow faster compared to starting a market from scratch. Also, the presence of competitors in an existing market can validate the viability of your business. The key to standing out in a crowded market is crafting your unique value proposition or UVP. It's all about leaning into your personality, background, and skill sets, and sharing your values, beliefs, and experiences with your followers. When you can connect with others on a personal level, that's what's going to attract the right clients for you. In this episode, we chat about: The benefits when you enter a crowded market The importance of understanding your Unique Value Proposition (UVP) Identifying your zone of genius Connecting through personal stories to attract the right clients Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Check out the book, The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks Come join us at ElopementCon from May 14-16, 2024! Today's show is a live talk Dave Lorenzo did in front of an audience in Florida. Dave shares his insights on the critical questions professionals need to answer to effectively sell to these top-level executives. What problem can you solve and why should they solve it? Understand the specific problems the CEO is facing. Instead of a generic approach, probe deeper into industry-specific issues. For instance, knowing industry-specific shortages can establish instant credibility. Why now? Why does the CEO need to address this problem immediately? Understanding the urgency behind a problem increases the chances of making a sale. Why you? Understand and communicate why you are the right person to solve the CEO's problem. The UVP should be more than just tenure; it could be an experience, unique insights, or a poignant personal story. The host shared his personal story of building two successful businesses but then facing a life-changing accident which shaped his approach to business. How can you get in? Innovate beyond traditional approaches like emails or LinkedIn connections. Deep research, understanding the industry trade shows your potential clients attend, and speaking their language can help you get that essential meeting. Are you willing to play the long game? Building relationships with CEOs is often a long-term commitment. The immediate conversion rate after reaching out might be as low as 1%, but with consistent follow-up and value addition, it can grow significantly over time. Using data from his client database, the host noted that while only 1% might sign up immediately, around 28% do so over a span of five years. Can you handle rejection? Dave shared some ideas for dealing with rejection. This includes desensitization. Do you know when to shut up? This part of the talk is about selling past the close. Dave shares a story about how this happened right in front of him to one of his clients. Throughout the podcast, the emphasis is on deep understanding, genuine problem-solving, and patience. It's not just about making a sale, but about building a relationship that can lead to sustainable business over time.

In May 2023, 51.52% of all web traffic came through mobile phones, with the average for 2023 so far coming in at 56.86%. The importance of a Strategic Marketing Plan Golden Sovel white paper AN ECONOMIC DEVELOPER'S COMPLETE GUIDE TO MARKETING & SEO STRATEGIES Strategic marketing is creating a comprehensive plan that aligns with an organization's overall strategy to achieve specific objectives. It involves: 1. Identifying the target audience & understanding the competition. 2. Developing a unique value proposition (UVP). 3. Creating a marketing mix that effectively communicates your message. This long-term process requires a deep understanding of the market and the organization's goals. CRAFTING & EXECUTING A STRATEGIC MARKETING PLAN To achieve success, economic developers must effectively execute their plans, measure the effectiveness of their marketing efforts, and adjust their approach as needed to ensure the desired results are achieved. 1. Determine your marketing mix. Decide which marketing channels (such as advertising, PR, social media, email marketing, etc.) will most effectively reach your target audience and achieve your goals. 2. Create a budget. Allocate resources to each of your marketing channels and tactics. Be sure to consider both the cost of creating and executing the marketing plan and the potential return on investment. 3. Develop a timeline. Create a timeline for executing your marketing plan. Assign specific tasks and deadlines to team members responsible for each tactic. 4. Implement the plan. Begin running your marketing tactics according to your timeline. 5. Measure and analyze results. Continuously monitor your marketing efforts and analyze your results. Use data to identify what's working and what's not, and adjust your plan accordingly. GET SMART SMART goals are a popular framework for setting and achieving goals. SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. 1. Specific: Be clear and specific about the results. Instead of setting a vague goal like “post more content,” set a specific goal like “post relevant community events every week for ten weeks.” 2. Measurable: Ensure your goal is measurable. This means setting criteria for success, such as tracking your social media interactions and increasing economic development conversations. 3. Achievable: Set goals that are realistic and achievable. TOP REASONS STRATEGIC MARKETING PLANS FAIL There are several reasons why strategic marketing plans can fail. #1 Poor planning – successful strategic marketing requires a well-defined plan with clear objectives, target audience, and tactics. If an EDO fails to plan correctly, it can result in inadequate or ineffective marketing efforts. #2 Not understanding your target audience – an EDO's marketing strategy depends on how well it understands its audience. Failure to understand can lead to marketing campaigns that are irrelevant, uninteresting, or unappealing. #3 Insufficient resources – implementing a strategic marketing plan can be costly, and a lack of resources can result in an inability to execute the plan effectively. This can include lacking financial resources, human resources, or time. #4 Poor execution – even the best marketing plan can fail if the execution is poor. Poor execution can result from a lack of attention to detail, ineffective communication, or insufficient training and support. #5 Inability to adapt – the marketplace is constantly changing, and a successful marketing strategy requires adapting to these changes. Failure to adapt can result in a marketing strategy that is no longer effective or relevant. #6 Lack of differentiation – in today's highly competitive market, it's crucial for companies to differentiate themselves from their competitors. Failure to differentiate can make it difficult to attract and retain businesses and workforce. Pulling together the components for a website or marketing effort derails most people. In the latest installment of our Back to Basics series, we're diving headfirst into an often overlooked yet vital subject: carving out your unique niche as a freelancer. Today's exploration centers on what I term "The Copycat Freelancer" dilemma. Don't get me wrong... I'm not here to criticize. Instead, I want to guide you past this hurdle that's probably been holding you back for years. Imagine I asked you, 'Why should a client choose you over your competitor?' What would your response be? Most freelancers are stumped by that question, and if you're being honest with yourself, you probably aren't doing anything unique that sets you apart. The result? You end up competing on price alone, setting your rates based on what competitors are charging. Ultimately, it's a race to the bottom that builds zero client loyalty and makes your freelancing journey tougher than it needs to be. In the episode, I delve deeper into the issue of differentiation and give you some help with carving out a unique place in your industry. Of course, this topic is nuanced, and there's a lot more to unpack. In this episode you'll discover: Why a UVP is important to your business The paperclip vs. the Prada bag Having an outcome-focused business How I got an unfair advantage (and you can, too) Setting yourself up as a specialized business Examples of well-differentiated businesses For full show notes, visit https://6figurecreative.com/259
