In this episode of The Brainy Business podcast, you will hear Melina Palmer interview Adam Alter, author of the book Anatomy of a Breakthrough. Adam shares his personal experience of feeling stuck during his early college days, which led him to research and develop strategies for getting unstuck. The conversation covers the four sections of his book: Help, Heart, Head, and Habit, each focusing on different aspects of overcoming obstacles and making progress. They discuss the importance of slowing down, acknowledging emotions, and developing adaptive strategies. Adam also emphasizes the exploration-exploitation distinction and the significance of knowing when to say yes and when to say no. He highlights the benefits of facing fears, taking risks, and not being afraid to fail. In this episode, you will: Enhance decision-making skills for professional success and personal growth. Understand the impact of technology and screen time on productivity and well-being. Create a mindful and focused environment by cultivating analog practices. Experience the benefits of mindful living and screen-free periods for increased clarity and creativity. Overcome fear and achieve breakthroughs to unlock your full potential. Show Notes: 00:00:00 - Introduction, Melina introduces Adam Alter and his background in behavioral science and decision-making. They discuss his previous books and his focus on understanding why we make predictable errors and how subtle cues in the environment influence our behavior. 00:02:24 - The Influence of Screens Adam shares his research on the effects of screen time on our well-being and the shift in public perception about technology. He emphasizes the importance of creating an environment where we have periods of time without access to screens to improve our mental focus and overall quality of life. 00:06:03 - Cultivating Healthy Screen Habits Adam advises creating boundaries with screens, such as keeping phones in a different room during meals and before bed, to reduce the temptation to constantly check and use devices. He highlights the impact of physical proximity on our psychological experience and suggests analog solutions to digital problems. 00:09:30 - The Outsourcing of Experience Adam discusses how we have become reliant on devices such as watches and phones to capture and validate our experiences. He shares a personal anecdote about restarting a run because his watch didn't record it, highlighting our tendency to outsource the business of living to technology. 00:10:26 - The Illusion of Experience Adam explores the idea that if our devices don't capture an experience, it feels as though the experience didn't happen. He suggests that we need to be conscious of this reliance on technology. 00:13:52 - Introduction Adam discusses his new book on getting unstuck, sharing his own experiences and research on the topic. 00:15:16 - Section 1: Help Adam introduces the concept of demystification and explores the struggles and hardships faced by successful individuals like actress Brie Larson. 00:17:08 - Section 2: Heart The emotional component of being stuck is explored in this section, emphasizing the importance of dealing with emotions and coping with the discomfort of feeling stuck. 00:17:53 - Section 3: Head Adam delves into cognitive strategies for getting unstuck, including finding good ideas, conducting friction audits, and seeking support from others. 00:18:25 - Section 4: Habit The final section focuses on taking action to get unstuck, discussing the importance of actionable behaviors, and outlining how to determine the right actions to take. 00:19:22 - Allowing for Space and Being Stuck The conversation explores the idea of allowing oneself to be stuck and the importance of taking breaks and creating space for creativity and productivity. 00:23:10 - Consistency vs. Off Switch Adam challenges the notion that success requires constant consistency, highlighting the value of having an "off switch" and embracing downtime for rejuvenation and creativity. 00:27:33 - The Dunning Kruger Effect and Confidence Tanking Adam discusses the Dunning-Kruger effect, where people realize they don't know enough about something, and their confidence drops. They can choose to invest and work on it or give up completely. 00:28:09 - Exploration vs Exploitation Mindset Adam explains the exploration exploitation distinction. In exploration mode, one should say yes to opportunities to try new things and create a wide funnel of experiences. In exploitation mode, focus on one thing and say no to everything else to make progress. 00:29:54 - The Importance of Saying No Adam emphasizes the importance of saying no and not getting stuck on things that don't matter. Some people are good at saying no and it helps them prioritize what is truly important. 00:30:19 - Balancing Yes and No Mindsets Adam suggests a challenge where students say yes to everything for a month, followed by a period of saying no. It's important to explore and try new things but also to focus on what truly matters and make progress. 00:31:37 - Facing Fears and Overcoming Stuckness Adam shares the story of a woman who challenged herself to face her fears for 100 days. By confronting her fears, she learned that fear doesn't have to control her and got unstuck as a person. 00:40:45 - The Importance of Training Beyond the Goal Adam shares the example of golfer Phil Mickelson, who trains by playing multiple rounds of golf in a day instead of just 18 holes. By pushing himself to play more, Mickelson improves his concentration and makes 18 holes feel easier. Overtraining can be a useful method for training focus and concentration in any area. 00:42:43 - The Benefits and Challenges of Overtraining Overtraining can be extremely effective for improving focus and concentration, but it can also leave you depleted. The asymmetry in golf, where a lapse in concentration can result in a significant loss of strokes, makes overtraining particularly valuable. It's important to find a balance and consider the potential costs and benefits of overtraining in any context. 00:43:35 - Practicing Beyond the Goal Just focusing on the main goal can make it difficult to achieve. By practicing beyond the goal, such as using a weighted ball in soccer or adding weight to a baseball bat, you can develop the strength and skills needed to perform even better when faced with standard conditions.  00:44:56 -  Conclusion, Melina's top insights from the conversation. By Pastor Gil Dirmann Scriptures (All NKJV) - Revelation 4:1-11 - After these things I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven. And the first voice which I heard was like a trumpet speaking with me, saying, “Come up here, and I will show you things which must take place after this.” 2 Immediately I was in the Spirit; and behold, a throne set in heaven, and One sat on the throne. 3 And He who sat there was like a jasper and a sardius stone in appearance; and there was a rainbow around the throne, in appearance like an emerald. 4 Around the throne were twenty-four thrones, and on the thrones I saw twenty-four elders sitting, clothed in white robes; and they had crowns of gold on their heads. 5 And from the throne proceeded lightnings, thunderings, and voices. Seven lamps of fire were burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God. 6 Before the throne there was a sea of glass, like crystal. And in the midst of the throne, and around the throne, were four living creatures full of eyes in front and in back. 7 The first living creature was like a lion, the second living creature like a calf, the third living creature had a face like a man, and the fourth living creature was like a flying eagle. 8 The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying: “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!” 9 Whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, who lives forever and ever 10 the twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying 11 “You are worthy, O Lord, To receive glory and honor and power; For You created all things, And by Your will they exist and were created.” - Revelation 5:1-5 - And I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a scroll written inside and on the back, sealed with seven seals. 2 Then I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and to loose its seals?” 3 And no one in heaven or on the earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll, or to look at it. 4 So I wept much, because no one was found worthy to open and read the scroll, or to look at it. 5 But one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the scroll and to loose its seven seals.” - 1 Corinthians 1:25-29 - Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. 26 For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called. 27 But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty 28 and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are 29 that no flesh should glory in His presence. - Revelation 5:8-14 - Now when He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. 9 And they sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll, And to open its seals; For You were slain, And have redeemed us to God by Your blood Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation 10 And have made us kings and priests to our God; And we shall reign on the earth.” 11 Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands 12 saying with a loud voice: “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain To receive power and riches and wisdom, And strength and honor and glory and blessing!” 13 And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying: “Blessing and honor and glory and power Be to Him who sits on the throne, And to the Lamb, forever and ever!” 14 Then the four living creatures said, “Amen!” And the twenty-four elders fell down and worshiped Him who lives forever and ever. Michelle Poler Speaker Youtuber Fear Facer Creator of Hello Fears and 100 Days Without Fear http://www.michellepoler.com Hello Fears"Facing your fears is scary, but living in fear is terrifying." Born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela to a family of holocaust survivors, Michelle was accustomed to living with fear. But when she moved to New York to pursue a Masters in Branding at the School of Visual Arts, Michelle quickly realized that NYC was not for the fearful. In efforts to re-write her definition of fear, Michelle completed a project where she faced 100 fears in 100 days. At around day 40, the project was discovered by the media becoming a viral phenomenon. Facing her fears took Michelle to TEDx’s stage where she completed her 100th challenge. This helped her turn a personal project into a global movement, allowing her to quit her job as Art Director in Y&R to pursue her passion. Michelle discovered that inspiring others to go after their fears was her new calling. She is now touring the world speaking at companies, schools and organizations teaching audiences how to step outside their comfort zones as a way to tap into their full potential. She is also the founder at Hello Fears, a platform where everyday people get to inspire everyday people with stories of courage. The following is from 100dayswithoutfear.com and in Michelle's own words. Thinking about it, living in fear worked out pretty good for me. I got to live a controlled lifestyle where things would normally go according to plan. Until now. In 2014, I moved to New York City to start a Master's Degree in Branding at the School of Visual Arts. Trying to control New York was a complete nightmare, but what really pushed me to pursue this project was not the controlled lifestyle I was leaving behind, but the frustration of not enjoying this city and life in general to the fullest. Since the unknown has proven to be so much more fulfilling than the familiar, I decided to face all of my fears one by one being completely vulnerable about it and trying to enjoy the ride. On October 18th, 2015 I faced my last fear: to speak at TEDxHouston. I not only faced the big fear of public speaking but I empowered millions to step out of their comfort zone and live a life without fear, which is the biggest reward I obtained by starting this amazing initiative. From that day on I decided to dedicate my life to encourage as many people as possible to start living a more fulfilled lifestyle by speaking at schools, organizations and companies all over the world. I also launched an online platform for everyday people to get inspired by everyday people. Hello Fears is a community of non-conformists who understand there is no such thing as being fearless but appreciate bravery in every way. I first heard today's guest, Michelle Poler, speak at the World Domination Summit about her 100 Days Without Fear Challenge and I found it SO inspiring. She faced 100 fears, documenting the entire thing on YouTube. After going viral, she quit her job and now travels around speaking about the life changing benefits of facing our fears, and recording YouTube videos every Wednesday to answer one question: WTF Are We So Afraid Of?! She has an awesome story, and I'm excited to share it with all of you. 100 Days Without Fear was a project in which Michelle faced 100 fears in 100 days – all while attending graduate school and holding down an advertising job. She used her mornings, lunch breaks and late nights to complete the challenge between classes, work and homework. On top of all that, Michelle also created regular videos to share her journey. Michelle challenged her fears by doing things like: Speaking at a TedxHouston Watching the sunrise, by herself, from the Brooklyn Bridge Riding a roller coaster for the first time Dancing like nobody's watching, in Times Square Walking a trapeze Skydiving Michelle's challenge was a huge success, in large part because she had the foresight to create a defined brand that resonated with people before launching the project. The tone, visuals and audio all added up to an empowering and exciting experience for the audience to follow. Since finishing the project, she has been approached with a number of amazing opportunities. She's focusing on speaking and expanding the YouTube channel – because she loves it. “I feel I have a strong message I want to communicate to younger girls, and they are on YouTube.”  Moving forward, Michelle is trying to direct her message at a younger generation of women. She is creating a new YouTube series, in which she will be speaking to her younger self: a really scared kid who was too comfortable. The new series is expected to launch in January. “I'm never going to be that relevant to anyone if I keep trying to appeal to absolutely everyone.” Michelle leveraged her mastery of branding to monetize what she loves – speaking to inspire people, especially younger women. If you haven't seen it, check out Michelle's journey facing 100 Days Without Fear and subscribe to her YouTube channel, Hello Fear, to see what she does next. If you have one of your own experiences that you would like to share to inspire people, send it to Michelle at HelloFear.com, where she is sharing other people's' stories about facing their fears.   SOME QUESTIONS I ASK: Michelle was doing the 100 Days Without Fear challenge while in graduate school and working a job. How did she do it? How did Michelle fund her challenge? Was it a particular video or fear that helped the channel go viral? Did Michelle face any fears that she does not want to face again? Did Michelle have to get used to approaching people about the project while she was recording? What are other amazing opportunist that have come up because Michelle underwent The 100 Days Without Fear challenge? What new fears have come up since the challenge wrapped up? How is Michelle monetizing the project since it wrapped up? Did Michelle have speaking experience before she started the challenge? IN THIS EPISODE, YOU WILL LEARN: Why Michelle started the 100 Days Without Fear challenge Why you should define your brand before you launch a project to make a more powerful impact How Michelle funded and monetized her journey How Michelle is leveraging the success of her project to take advantage of even more opportunities Plus much more… DON'T STOP HERE… Guest Links & Resources: Website | YouTube | Medium ADDITIONAL RESOURCES: 100 Days Without Fear playlist   Production & Development for The Bold Life Movement Podcast by Podcast Masters
