Suffering, Wayfaring & Hope with Curt Thompson and Warren KinghornAnxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges are surging among both young and old. By some estimates, more than one in five American adults struggle with some form of mental illness each year. There are few untouched – either directly or through loved ones – with the suffering that attends such struggles. What does faith offer those in the midst of such challenges?Warren Kinghorn and Curt Thompson, both practicing Christian psychiatrists, join our podcast to help explore these questions. Warren's book, Wayfaring: A Christian Approach to Mental Health Care, draws from the theology of Thomas Aquinas as well as the science of today. Curt's latest book, The Deepest Place: Suffering and the Formation of Hope, draws from the Apostle Paul's experience to show us how we can flourish in the midst of suffering. Together, they help us to reframe our understanding of mental health care from fixing machines to accompanying fellow wayfarers on the way to the Lord's feast:“There's a lot of really good things about thinking about mental health care as a process of careful work to reduce symptoms. But what are we missing?“I think some of what we're missing are the stories that people bring in and the stories, not just of individuals, but of communities and cultures…Maybe they're not just internal problems where something's broken and needs to be fixed, but maybe we need to think about it in a broader and more holistic context.”- Warren KinghornWe trust this podcast will give you new language, compassion, and tools to address mental health challenges, and to wayfare alongside loved ones who may also be struggling. This podcast is an edited version of our Online Conversation recorded in January, 2025. How does hope begin to form in the face of our greatest pain? Why do some people seem to rise out of the rubble of suffering with a new sense of eternal expectation while others seem forever stuck in their heartbreak? Dr. Curt Thompson is a Psychiatrist who has studied and seen the the impact of interpersonal neurobiology and how hope is formed. He knows that healing from the greatest traumas and tragedies is possible, but requires a unique kind of safe community to hear and hold of our stories of hurt and harm in order to heal. In his latest book, The Deepest Place: Suffering and the Formation of Hope, he explores how hope can be born after our pain, especially when we are willing to connect with others and share our journey. In this episode, Davey and Dr. Thompson talk about how durable hope is essential to our healing, the way neuroplasticity can help us increase hope, and the undeniable power of confessional communities in our healing. If you've ever wondered how you can muster any semblance of hope after heartache, this conversation will remind you that hope can grow and that no matter what you've walked through, with God and others, you can find the hope your heart is longing for. Most of us would must rather avoid suffering entirely. Yet, we're also aware of the butterfly analogy which tells us that beauty often comes through intense struggle. How can turning towards, rather than from, our pain result in beauty, and how can we find Christ in our pain. When you're suffering and in pain, hope is something you wish would arrive like a package on your doorstep. But that's not actually how hope is formed. In this special episode, John and Austin interview Christian psychiatrist Curt Thompson, MD, author of the book: "The Deepest Place: Suffering and the Formation of Hope". This conversation will completely change the way you've thought about HOPE, and dispel the belief that forming hope is a solitary exercise. Hope is not something that "I try to have", but something that "we form together" through the power of presence and relational connection. All of your efforts to manage the suffering of life are in some fashion designed to pull you into a relationship with someone, or something, that can be WITH YOU in the pain. We are honored that Curt Thompson joined the WYITW team to share his love of psychology, interpersonal neurobiology and biblical scholarship! Are you aware of the doors in your mind that the enemy will try to open? In this third episode of our "Fighting Your Spiritual Battles" series, John Tinnin and Shay Roush take a look at the two moves that the enemy uses to try and cut us off from God's love: Temptation and Accusation. The battle for your mind is of utmost importance, as it is the primary force that drives all of your beliefs, emotions and actions, so this is an area where knowledge and discernment are critical. When you learn the strategies of the enemy, and effective ways to push back on his tactics, you will be empowered to tackle this daily battle. We hope this insight helps you maintain a "sound mind" that is continually renewed by the truth of God's word. Curt Thompson brings neurobiology and the hope of the gospel together to live out a formationally-minded Christian life in this episode. We talk about how durable transformation happens often through suffering, the reasons for Christian hope, confessional communities, and how we live the life of faithful resilience when it's easier to follow "3 quick steps." Dr. Curt Thompson, author of The Deepest Place: Suffering and the Formation of Hope, talks about our human difficulty in being with suffering rather than trying to fix everything, how hope comes from hardship, and how suffering plays a role in forming us to be our truest, most beautiful, heaven-ready selves.
Justin and J.L. Gerhardt are on the podcast today, and you will love hearing from them! There is an epic retelling of their meeting and falling in love complete with 90's Hearthrob meet cute and all. More than that, Justin and J.L. share about their journey of God leading them both into ministry with words, calling their family to travel the world, and unleashing their creativity and courage to press into new ways to encounter God and His Word. This journey has given birth to various creative outlets for the Gerhardt family, but the one we talk about the most in this episode is Justin's incredible podcast “Holy Ghost Stories.” “Holy Ghost Stories” is a unique podcast that is more like an immersive narrated experience that takes stories from the Old Testament, unpacks them, and breathes life into the grit and shadow as well as the rapture and delight of God encountering His people. Justin's heart for this podcast is to remind us that we have an inheritance of stories in scripture that we share in an immersive, but often adolescent way to children, to try and captivate them and introduce them to God. And then they grow up. And as Justin says “We stop telling the stories and stop teaching the stories. And a story taught is different than a story told.” There is absolutely fruit to be found in teaching! However, grown-ups can miss out on what these stories have always had for us when we face real suffering, real rejoicing, and everything in between unless we revisit what they really were: real events that happened with real people with a very real God. Y'all hanging out with the Gerhardts is such a delight, and I can't wait for you to get to know them a little better. If you loved this episode, or love Holy Ghost Stories you need to attend a live experience! And for my local friends, there is one coming up in Nashville in December! I really believe you will see the Old Testament in a more alive and engaging way, and it will help you prepare your heart for the coming of Christmas. I hope I see you there. This is the final episode in our series, Healing From Church Wounds. The theology of suffering is one area where we have struggled as a church - but we see signs of improvement. It's not a fun topic, but it's at the crux of our human experience and even our faith, rooted in the suffering of our Savior Jesus Christ. On our podcast we love to bridge the gap between Biblical, clinical and relational wisdom - and for this episode our guest is one of our mentors and influencers, Dr. Curt Thompson. He was one of the first to connect some key dots for the Christian church with his first book, The Anatomy of the Soul, helping Christian leaders see the links between scripture, neuroscience, and the deeper needs of human beings. Dr. Curt Thompson is a Christian, and a psychiatrist, working at the intersection of neuroscience and spiritual formation. He is the bestselling author of many books, including his latest, The Deepest Place: Suffering and the Formation of Hope. Inspired by compassion for others and informed from a Christian perspective, he shares how to have more authentic relationships and fully experience our deepest longing: to be known. To be human is to suffer. Most people try to bypass suffering or live with it in isolation. But true healing happens when you acknowlege its presence, learn to be with it, and allow others to come alongside you in your pain. “Suffering is this whole notion of my perception that, 'I'm alone with my pain.' So suffering is a direct function of the degree to which I am isolated with my pain,” explains Dr. Curt Thompson. “If I practice allowing others to be with me, it changes the nature of how I practice anticipating the future. And this is how ‘I' don't form hope for me…'we' form hope for me.” In today's episode, Dr. Curt Thompson returns to discuss his incredible new book, The Deepest Place: Suffering and the Formation of Hope. We explore the intersection of faith and neuroscience, unraveling the profound impact of suffering and the formation of hope. To learn more about Dr. Curt Thompson, visit his website or grab a copy of his new book.
