Suffering, Wayfaring & Hope with Curt Thompson and Warren KinghornAnxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges are surging among both young and old. By some estimates, more than one in five American adults struggle with some form of mental illness each year. There are few untouched – either directly or through loved ones – with the suffering that attends such struggles. What does faith offer those in the midst of such challenges?Warren Kinghorn and Curt Thompson, both practicing Christian psychiatrists, join our podcast to help explore these questions. Warren's book, Wayfaring: A Christian Approach to Mental Health Care, draws from the theology of Thomas Aquinas as well as the science of today. Curt's latest book, The Deepest Place: Suffering and the Formation of Hope, draws from the Apostle Paul's experience to show us how we can flourish in the midst of suffering. Together, they help us to reframe our understanding of mental health care from fixing machines to accompanying fellow wayfarers on the way to the Lord's feast:“There's a lot of really good things about thinking about mental health care as a process of careful work to reduce symptoms. But what are we missing?“I think some of what we're missing are the stories that people bring in and the stories, not just of individuals, but of communities and cultures…Maybe they're not just internal problems where something's broken and needs to be fixed, but maybe we need to think about it in a broader and more holistic context.”- Warren KinghornWe trust this podcast will give you new language, compassion, and tools to address mental health challenges, and to wayfare alongside loved ones who may also be struggling. This podcast is an edited version of our Online Conversation recorded in January, 2025. Joining us today as we continue in our Mental Health Awareness Series is a renowned psychiatrist and true friend of us here at the American Association of Christian Counselors, Dr. Curt Thompson! Inspired by deep compassion for others and informed from a Christian perspective, Dr. Curt loves sharing fresh insights and practical applications for developing more authentic relationships and fully experiencing our deepest longing: to be known. However, we unfortunately live in a culture and society that equates brokenness with embarrassment and humiliation. Although this could not be further from the truth, this lie promotes a sense of hiddenness within many that when left unexplored can form into what I believe is one of the main things that prohibits us from allowing ourselves to be fully seen and known which is that of SHAME. Today, Dr. Curt is going to take us on a journey of better understanding the soul of shame and what can happen when shame takes root in our hearts and minds… With the use of a considerable dose of warmth and humor, coupled together with an understanding of interpersonal neurobiology (IPNB) and a Christian view of what it means to be human — Dr. Curt educates and encourages us to seek to fulfill our intrinsic desire to feel known, valued and connected. He understands that deep, authentic relationships are essential to experiencing a healthier, more purposeful life — but the only way to realize this is to begin telling our stories more truly. Our prayer is that this conversation would help you process your deepest longings, your grief, your shame, your identity, your purpose, and your perspective of both God and humanity… and by doing so we pray that it would invite you to engage more authentically with your own story and the relationships God has placed in your life. Only then can you feel truly known and connected and live in the meaningful reality you desire to create.Dr. Curt Thompson's website: https://curtthompsonmd.com/ (Book) The Soul of Shame: Retelling the Stories We Believe About Ourselves - https://amzn.to/3Mj9Nyo (Book) The Soul of Desire: Discovering the Neuroscience of Longing, Beauty, and Community - https://amzn.to/3MMKPJ1
We all long to be fully known. Yet so often this desire for true connection and community is impaired by trauma, shame, and suffering. In October of 2021, we hosted psychiatrist Curt Thompson to discuss his book, The Soul of Desire: Discovering the Neuroscience of Longing, Beauty, and Community. In his book, Thompson weaves together neurobiological insight and spiritual formation to open up new ways of understanding our longing for connection with God and each other. Curt explored the ways cultivating presence with ourselves, others, and God can move us from brokenness to beauty:“The reason that this is important is because our trauma and our shame, all that stuff–if I don't take care of that, I'm necessarily literally going to have to be burning neurobiological energy to contain it, and that is energy that I then will not have available to create those artifacts of beauty and goodness in the world that God has prepared for me and you together, along with the presence of the Holy Spirit from before the foundation of the world, to create.”Confessional Community and the ImaginationDuring our conversation, Curt offers up a vision for the ways in which a confessional community can reshape our imaginations and reveal new possibilities for better knowing and loving God ourselves and others. It's a redemptive, hopeful, even beautiful vision, and we hope it inspires you to press into your community too. This podcast is an edited version of our Online Conversation from October, 2021. What do our brains want more than chocolate, sex, or a sports car? What does your memory of long past events have to do with the apparently unrelated arguments and anxiety you are experiencing these days? Psychiatrist Curt Thompson discusses these questions from the perspective of both brain science and theology. A psychiatrist in private practice, Dr. Thompson has expertise in interpersonal neurobiology, and contends that a key to living a good life comes quite simply to this: “being known.” Lee and Curt discuss two of Curt's books, “The Anatomy of the Soul” and “The Soul of Desire,” with conversation on trauma and anxiety, connection and community, and what your memory of long past events has to do with the apparently unrelated arguments you are having many years later. Books discussed in this episode: Anatomy of the Soul: Surprising Connections between Neuroscience and Spiritual Practices That Can Transform Your Life and Relationships The Soul of Desire: Discovering the Neuroscience of Longing, Beauty, and Community Want more from Curt Thompson in conversation with Lee?
