From People Pleasing to Owning Her Story: Lisa Graft's Journey to Authenticity, Part One

Play Episode Listen Later May 27, 2025 22:42

In this heartfelt and vulnerable episode, Lisa Graft — creative storyteller, mom, speaker, Marketing Coordinator at Thrivent and Executive Director of Roots & Wings — opens up about her struggle with people pleasing and how it kept her from living authentically. With raw honesty and deep reflection, Lisa walks us through the pressures of public storytelling, the exhaustion of trying to be everything for everyone, and the breakthrough moment when she realized she had a boundary problem, not a million different problems. Using powerful metaphors like being a Lazy Susan and a circus performer, Lisa paints a picture many women will find deeply relatable — one of hiding, burnout, and longing for more. Her story reminds us that it's never too late to rediscover who we are and set boundaries that protect the person God made us to be. Lisa also serves as Vice President of the Roots & Wings Board, a nonprofit dedicated to helping women pursue legacy through fearless generosity in their time, talent, and treasure. You can explore their resources and learn more at rootsandwings.org. In this follow-up episode, author and Bible teacher Rebecca Hitchcock returns to share practical tools for walking unashamed. Building on Part 1, which covered her story and the concept of "shame clouds" and God's promise of a “double portion” from Isaiah 61:7, this episode equips listeners with real strategies to begin experiencing freedom. Rebecca walks listeners through how to: Recognize signs of shame, including difficulty receiving love or help, compulsive “worthiness hustling,” and being overly sensitive to rejection or criticism. Speak biblical truth over themselves using identity-focused Scriptures such as 2 Corinthians 5:17 (You are a new creation in Christ) and other affirmations of God's approval, love, and acceptance. Engage in ongoing mind renewal—replacing lies with God's truth again and again, not as a one-time fix, but as a daily spiritual rhythm. Acknowledge shame in safe, vulnerable community where shame loses its power in the presence of connection and grace. Use tools like a shame assessment to begin naming what's really going on internally and bringing those burdens to God in exchange for the double portion He promises. Rebecca also touches on the science of how renewing your thoughts impacts your physical body (epigenetics) and how even seasoned believers need to continuously root their identity in Christ rather than their performance. This episode is full of Scripture, compassion, and encouragement to walk in the truth of who God says you are—not what shame tries to tell you.

Content Warning: This episode includes discussion of child sexual assault. In today's conversation, Nadine sits down with Rebecca Hitchcock, author of What I Didn't Learn in Church, to unpack the heavy but vital topic of shame. Rebecca vulnerably shares her personal story of experiencing sexual abuse at age five, the lingering shame it caused throughout her life, and how it resurfaced during her struggles with postpartum depression. Raised in a Christian home and once a high-level fashion director in Chicago, Rebecca eventually left her career to raise her family and pursue deeper spiritual healing. For more than two decades, she has led women's Bible studies across the Midwest, helping others find freedom in Christ. Her book, What I Didn't Learn in Church, shares many of these lessons and is available at rebeccahitchcock.org (rebeccahitchcock.org). Rebecca explains how her understanding of God's Word radically shifted her experience of shame. She invites listeners to stop hustling for worthiness and instead receive the “double portion” of acceptance and identity God offers in Scripture. Together, Nadine and Rebecca walk through key Bible passages that anchor the episode's message, including: Isaiah 61:7 — Instead of your shame there shall be a double portion. 2 Corinthians 5:17 — Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. 2 Corinthians 5:21 — He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God. Matthew 11:28 — Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. This episode reminds every woman that shame has no claim on her life when she stands in Christ's freedom. Rebecca encourages listeners to take even five minutes to sit with God, ask for His love, and begin exchanging shame for the truth of who they are in Him.

In this episode we are reminded that “we need to feel it to heal it,” that we thrive in community, that our lives have a purpose, and that God is at the centre of it all. As we look back we have a lot to be grateful for, and we appreciate you all for listening. Unforgiveness robs us of peace and contentment and it festers by allowing bitterness and resentment to settle in. When we start on the path of forgiveness by being honest about our feelings and thoughts, we start the process of releasing all the emotions which hurt us. Although difficult to move on from hurt, we need to be willing to process it, and heal. Our guest, Bre, reminds us that there is no set timeline for forgiveness and that we benefit most when we confront the unforgiveness within us and pursue healing. Trigger Warning: Mentions suicide Life happens! and sometimes that results in us questioning who we are. Our identity not only defines who we are, but often determines how we show up in life. We sometimes fall into the trap of misaligning our identity with what we do or to specific roles we play but our identity is not dependant on any of these external factors. Our guest experienced a traumatic event which changed the way she viewed herself. During this crisis of identity she went through a process of redefining herself and realising that her past didn't define her, and that she needed to accept herself as she was in that present moment. Often a crisis of identity has as questioning our worth and our value as well, but we can all rest in the truth that we are worthy, we are enough, we are valuable just as we are.

Our addiction to distractions robs us of joy and peace. We turn to distractions to avoid our lives, to distract us from what's really going on. Often trauma influences our ability to rest as well. During the holidays especially, we become overly occupied with busyness that isn't always necessary, and turn a season which is meant to birng us joy and hope into one that exhausts us. We can delight in God's joy through worship and being present as we rest in Him. We then allow ourselves the rest we so deeply desire and deeply deserve. This season ask yourself: What is stelaing my time and energy and how can I better prioritise what brings me joy and rest? We encourage you to be present in the moment and take the time to slow down in order to pursue joy and rest. Our guest shares about a difficult relationship with a parent and how holding onto unforgiveness negatively impacted her self-image and the relationship. We don't always have to actively confront issues, sometimes we can make room for God to heal the wounds of bitterness, hurt and anger and replace them with peace. *Trigger Warning - May contain sensitive content. * Shame tries to convince us that we are failures because of the mistakes we've made. We start to define ourselves by our missteps and shortcomings. In this episode our guest shares her experience with shame which led to her making poor decisions, and potentially endangering herself in the process. When we shift our perspective from what others think to our true identity, we are freed from the shackles of shame and are able to heal. When we have the courage to be vulnerable and authentic, we also make space for others to share thier stories, and know that they are not alone. We are encouraged to meditate on what is true rue, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent or praiseworthy, in order to shift our perspectives from shame and instead embrace the freedom we deserve (see Philippians 4:8).

As women we often focus on others first, and we put ourselves last. This is where self-care comes in, we have to prioritize time for ourselves. Although self-care can be manicures and massages, it can also be self-responsibility by taking care of our health and making sure we listen to the signs our bodies are trying to communicate to us. We have to learn that self-care is not selfish, and realise that the impact we hope to make can only be possible if we take care of ourselves as well. When we make self-care a habit, we ensure that we are filling ourselves up to be the best versions of ourselves. It doesn't have to be complicated. Healing is a process, and one we often avoid for fear of the pain that might come with it. Our guest shares her journey of healing and talks about how we have to take an internal inventory to identify and succesfully heal from things that are causing us pain. She encourages us to be patient, to seek and ask for forgiveness, to praise God and to be rooted in Christ in the steps she has outilined in her book, as we embark on the journey of healing. From her journey of loss, our guest learned to trust God by not only listening to the Word and God's promises, but by applying a practical approach. By taking an internal inventory she became aware of not only the spiritual growth needed, but the physical and emotional changes that needed to take place as well. She reminds us that when we come out of our own journey of healing, we are better able to walk alongside others in their times of trial.

In life there are different seasons that we may face. We can sometimes become impatient and frustrated, especially when it seems like we are in a waiting season. It is in these times that we can perhaps view our situations as being planted and not buried: allowing God to work in us and grow deeper roots. When we are honest with ourselves about the season we are in we can better tap into what we need - sometimes we need to reach out for help, and other times we are in seasons where we can give. There is so much to learn from every season we encounter and we are reminded that no season lasts forever. In Ecclesiatses 3: 1-8 is says: "There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens..." What season are you in right now?
