In Ep. 67, In this story, what began as a volunteer opportunity to help someone with ALS and their family turned into a friendly connection, one that may have never happened otherwise. Meet Faith Strautmann and Robert Meyer. Inspired by several ALS families she had volunteered with throughout high school, Faith Strautmann reached out and became involved with the ALS Association St. Louis Regional Chapter, taking on additional volunteer opportunities over the next few years. She became actively involved with the chapter's events like the Walk to Defeat ALS®, and continued to work closely with the ALS community. In the beginning of January, the chapter's volunteer coordinator approached her about a new opportunity to volunteer with a person living with ALS near her home, and she knew it was for her. Robert “Bob” Meyer is just 54 and was diagnosed with Familial ALS in April 2019. “My diagnosis came after 4 MRI's, two nerve conduction tests, extensive blood work, and a conversation with my doctor,” he said. Knowing that he was starting to need a little help around the house, Bob reached out to his care services coordinator at his local chapter of The ALS Association for more information. The chapter's volunteer coordinator explained she could arrange for a volunteer to help with some household chores: maybe some light housekeeping, making a cake, reading a book, or going for an outing. Bob agreed and was put in contact with Faith.

One of the recurring topics on this podcast has been the importance of planning for the unexpected in your business. For the last several decades, one of our most outspoken advocates of this message has been Tim McDaniel, a principal on Rea's valuation and transaction advisory services team. Today, Tim's central message will not be about the importance of planning ahead in your business. Instead, he will be delivering another message – one that is deeply personal – and that zeros in on a subject that has turned his whole life upside down. Becoming an ALS Warrior Every year, around 6,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS. Lou Gehrig, Stephen Hawking, Sam Shepard, Glenn Montgomery, Charles Mingus, and countless others have fought and died from this disease – and recently, Tim joined this fight. Today, ALS is always fatal and patients typically only live three to five years after diagnosis, but it doesn't have to be this way. In recent years, there have been great strides in the scientific community and it's only a matter of time before a cure is found. Unfortunately, there are other roadblocks to contend with as well, and these are the roadblocks Tim and so many other ALS Warriors are determined to remove. May is ALS Awareness Month and we are proud to bring you this special episode of unsuitable on Rea Radio to help raise awareness of this terrible disease. If you want to support Tim and ALS research, here's how you can help: Contact Rea or Tim about opportunities for Tim to speak with the media about ALS and the advocacy ALS need Join Central Ohio ALS – visit alsohio.org to learn more Join IAMALS.org as an advocate and donate to their cause Support Rea & Associates' “Walk to Defeat ALS” team “Trekking 4 Tim” Follow Tim McDaniel on Twitter – https://twitter.com/timtmcdaniel (@TimTMcDaniel) Follow Tim's CaringBridge account for updates: caringbridge.org/public/timmcdaniel If you liked this episode of unsuitable on Rea Radio, let us know by hitting the like button or by sharing it with your followers on social media. Kate Linder received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on April 10, 2008 and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Y&R co-creator Lee Phillip Bell and castmate Jeanne Cooper spoke at her well-attended ceremony. Kate had roles in the feature films Hysteria (2012) and Erased (2013), Miss Meadows (2014), Garry Marshall's Mother's Day (2016) and The Charnel House. Linder wrapped several more upcoming features including Charlie Matthau's Book of Leah, Stereotypically You, Voice from the Stone and her latest, Dead Love. If you're Kate Linder, you don't quit your job as a United Airlines flight attendant because you’re cast for a one-day, one-line role on The Young and the Restless. Linder has done both jobs simultaneously for the 36 years she’s been on the #1 rated soap opera (that’s #1 every single week for 32 years) in daytime television -- with the resulting confusion among passengers creating hilarious anecdotes. The passenger/fan response has been overwhelming and incredulous. Fortunately, she’s been working only the first-class section for decades and unlike Linder, none of her co-workers there have graced the covers of soap opera magazines. She was preparing for take-off on a flight when the late Johnny Grant called to inform her she had been selected for a Star on the Walk of Fame. Linder is also active with the USO, visiting troops in the US, in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Korea and Guantanamo Bay. In late ’05, Linder was elected Governor of the Daytime Programming Peer Group of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (yup, the folks who put on the Emmys), she was reelected in ’07 for a second two-year stint. She is currently an active and longtime board member for SAG-AFTRA. Linder, as Esther Valentine (so named because Linder was married on Valentine’s Day), confidante/ housekeeper to the soap’s wealthy and powerful matron, Katherine Chancellor (portrayed by the late Jeanne Cooper) has often been called upon to add a touch of humor to the show. Her character has been perennially unlucky in love and her two brief marriages were to con men only after the Chancellor fortune. She and her boss were twice kidnapped in pursuit of the same fortune. Kate is an eternal optimist and tireless worker for many charities and was named celebrity spokesperson for The ALS Association in early 2005. Her late brother-in-law was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) in December, 2004 and Kate has gone to Washington, DC each May to lobby for more funds to fight this disease with no cure. In 2006, Linder won the organization’s All-Star Award for her passionate service to the cause and won their Packman Award in 2007 and their One Starry Night Award in 2016. Kate travels around the country to participate in and encourage other volunteers at the ALS Association’s fundraisers, Walk to Defeat ALS, and in their fundraising dinners for local chapters. She’s also active with many AIDS charities and the Los Angeles Mission. In addition, Linder hosts three annual charity teas with a rotating group of her castmates, one for Canucks for Kids each July in Vancouver and another two in Toronto and Calgary for March of Dimes Canada’s Conductive Education® (CE) program for children and adults with neuro-motor disabilities, Linder is the celebrity ambassador for the latter program.

ALS Facts Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a rapidly progressive, invariably fatal neurological disease that attacks the nerve cells (neurons) responsible for controlling voluntary muscles. As of today, the cause of ALS is unknown. There are no known preventative measures, and there is no recognized cure. •About 30,000 people nationwide suffer from ALS. •ALS strikes nearly 5,600 people in the U.S. each year. •Symptoms can include twitching, cramping, or stiffness of muscles – muscle weakness affecting an arm or a leg, slurred and nasal speech, or difficulty chewing or swallowing. •The disease most commonly strikes people between 40-60 years of age. •Young adults and older individuals can also develop the disease. •Average lifespan after diagnosis is two to five years. •The disease crosses all ethnic, racial and socioeconomic boundaries. •Men are affected more often than women. •Eventually all muscles under voluntary control are affected. •Because ALS affects only motor neurons, the disease does not impair a person’s mind, personality, intelligence, or memory. •Patients usually maintain control of eye muscles and bladder and bowel functions. •Patients lose their strength and ability to move their arms, legs, body, and when the muscles in the diaphragm and chest wall fail, the patients lose the ability to breathe without ventilatory support. •Beginning symptoms show in one of three areas: lower extremity, bulbar area, or upper extremity. •No one test can provide a definitive diagnosis for ALS, although the presence of upper and lower motor neuron signs in a single limb is strongly suggestive. •The diagnosis of ALS is primarily based on the symptoms and signs the physician observes in a patient and a series of tests to rule out other diseases. _________________________________________________________ Walk to defeat ALS August 25th 2018 http://web.alsa.org/site/TR?fr_id=13231&pg=entryThe Supply Fundraising through the Walk drives bold and urgent innovation as we march together toward a treatment and ultimately a cure for ALS.
