In this episode of Gangland Wire, retired Kansas City Intelligence detective Gary Jenkins sits down with veteran Chicago journalist Chuck Goudie, whose decades of reporting have made him one of Chicago's most respected voices on organized crime. A fan of the show asked for more Chicago stories—and this conversation delivers. We dive into the legacy of the Spilotro family, sparked by the recent passing of John Spilotro, brother of the infamous Las Vegas mob figure Tony Spilotro. Chuck shares his reflections on how the Outfit has evolved, from its heyday of dominance in gambling, loansharking, and union racketeering to its much smaller—yet still persistent—presence today. Together, we revisit the Outfit's historic ties to the Teamsters, the Strawman trials, and the legendary names like Anthony Accardo who shaped Chicago's mob identity. Chuck solves a mystery and provides the name of the man who killed Sam Giancana. Chuck also offers personal insights into how mob families navigated the push and pull of blood ties, with some members rising into notoriety while others tried to lead straight lives under the shadow of organized crime. Our conversation shifts to Chuck's recent investigative work on the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa, exploring the long-standing theories and mob connections that keep the story alive decades later. This episode blends history, reflection, and storytelling—offering both an inside look at Chicago's Outfit and a reminder of why these stories still captivate us today. 1:02 The Legacy of John Drummond 4:11 Current Status of the Outfit 7:28 The Last of the Spilotro Family 10:02 Family Dynamics of the Spilotros 13:18 Frank Calabrese's Las Vegas Fame 13:25 Giancana's Murder Investigation and who did it 18:18 Surveillance in the Giancana Case 22:03 The Straw Man Trials 25:40 Ken Eto's Gangland Story 27:52 Investigating Jimmy Hoffa's Disappearance 31:03 Closing Thoughts with Chuck Goudie Subscribe to Gangland Wire wherever you get your podcasts, and join us each week as we uncover the stories buried beneath the headlines—and the bodies. This is Gary Jenkins, retired Kansas City Police Intelligence Unit detective here in Kansas City. And, you know, guys, I have, I was talking with a fan not too long ago from Chicago, I think on the, maybe the Facebook group, and he said, you need to do more Chicago stories. And I had to admit, I hadn't done that many Chicago stories. I got caught up in New York a lot, It seemed like, and anyhow, we're back to Chicago and another guy's mentioned to another guy and we were talking and, and somebody said, I don't remember who, maybe that original fan said you need to get Chuck Goudie on there. He's been doing a lot of reporting on the outfit over the years. And I didn't really know who Chuck was. So I started searching. He did a recent story about the death of the last spilotro brother, John spilotro. So I thought, man, this is, this is it. This is what I got to do. So welcome, Chuck Goudie from Chicago. Well, it's quite an introduction. Some might call it a eulogy, but thankfully that's not what he does. [1:02] Really? Now, I think I told you earlier, you know, last time I interviewed a Chicago newsman, it was John Bulldog Drummond. Bulldog Drummond, I tell you what, he was the dean of Chicago newsmen, television newsmen, when it came to reporting on the mob. There's no doubt about it.

What if the biggest risks lead to the most meaningful rewards? My guest this week, Christine Goudie, is the definition of that question. As the Co-founder and CEO of Granville Biomedical, she has forged a unique path driven by a desire to use her design skills for good, starting with a one-way ticket out of Newfoundland with just $250 in her pocket. In our chat, Christine took me through her incredible journey through multiple cities, schools, and startups, all in pursuit of a career with purpose. We explored the pivotal moments that shaped her mission to serve overlooked communities—from a bar conversation that sparked a passion for designing innovative wheelchair seating to co-founding a company that tackles taboos in women's health. Her story is a powerful lesson in the relentless, unsexy grind of building something that matters and the mental shift required to turn fear into fuel.In this episode, we cover:• Leaving home with only $250 and no safety net. • Her "pie-eating contest" analogy for the entrepreneurial grind. • The pivotal pub chat that changed her entire career path. • Tackling taboos in women's health with Granville Biomedical. • Shifting from a fear of failure to asking, "But what if it works out?". Have you been affected by stress or experienced anxiety in your life or in the workplace? In this open and illuminating conversation from one of my previous masterclasses, I chat with Mark Goudie from 'A Conscious State'. Mark illuminates the path of healing for numerous individuals grappling with trauma. His innate gift for fostering self-awareness and nurturing effective communication has empowered countless souls to embark on transformative journeys of inner growth. The more stressed we are, the more stressed we become. Our behaviors actually create more stress with actions, which actually affect our bodies in a way that creates more stress. So, it's really interesting in a way that, human nature, we actually are creating a lot of that stress ourselves, with no real clear plan on how to resolve that stress. - Mark GoudieWe explore:Mark's personal journey with deep stress and anxiety throughout his career, how it has affected his life and the personal growth he has gone throughHow deep stress triggered him to explore stress management and create his businessUnderstanding stress and its impact and how stress can form in many different waysStress in Property Management and how to incorporate a stress planHow stress can impact our bodiesStress relief exercise to support you working out what the background stress isConnect with Mark Goudie:https://aconsciousstate.com/https://aconsciousstate.com/pages/shifting-states-3-day-retreathttps://aconsciousstate.com/pages/contactKylie's Resources:Property Management Growth School: https://courses.thatpropertymum.com.au/TPM-BDMSchoolDigital Marketing School: https://courses.thatpropertymum.com.au/digitalschoolThat Property Mum Courses: https://www.thatpropertymum.com.au/courses/The PM Accelerate Membership: https://courses.thatpropertymum.com.au/accelerateBook a Strategy Call with Kylie: https://calendly.com/kylie-tpm/coaching-callThe Tarsi Way - https://thetarsiway.com) PMVA - https://www.pmva.com.au/RentPay - https://www.rentpay.com.au/Kolmeo: https://kolmeo.com/Connect with Kylie:Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/thatpropert...Website -
When Col Goudie joined me as the editor on a documentary about the one-legged World War 2 flying ace Douglas Bader, they turned up in a flying jacket and walking on crutches with a limp.It was a co-incidence. Col is brilliant, but not that method! But it does indicate something of the enthusiasm and passion of this hugely successful documentary and drama editor. Col's fingerprints are on everything from the blockbuster success of Star Wars Rogue One, the indie gem Monsters and multiple documentaries. And this episode isn't just a chat; it's a masterclass in the subtle art of documentary filmmaking and editing, with a sprinkle of blockbuster magic. It shows how a filmmaker applies the same diligent skills across the board, from small-scale dramas to the sprawling intergalactic saga, revealing the unexpected kinship between low-budget and blockbuster editing techniques.Editing is more than just cutting; it's about storytelling above all. We explore the kaleidoscope of Col's experiences, from finding the essence of the story hidden within hours of improvised footage to the practical tips that can save you from the cutting room floor. As Col says, even the most unsuspecting cutaway can be the thread that stitches a scene together, showcasing the artistry in restraint and the power of a fresh pair of eyes on a project. This episode lays bare the thoughtfulness and adaptability that goes beyond the technical, tapping into the intellectual curiosity at the heart of filmmaking.Concluding this masterclass, we shift the lens to the technical wizardry of blending real with the unreal in visual effects, and the discipline required when directors craft shots for the editing room. From the invaluable quiet of neutral cutaways to the rhythm of music crafting emotional crescendos, our guest dissects the elements that transform good footage into a great film. Each tale and technique further cements the idea that the heart of filmmaking lies in preparation, adaptability, and the relentless pursuit of a narrative's truth. Join us for an episode that promises to inspire, educate, and elevate your understanding of the film industry through the lens of an editor's eye.Are you interested in joining the DocFix program and working with Nigel?
