Kicking off a New Year felt like this particular topic was apt. Getting back on the horse. Starting again. Most skills we develop require some level of practical application or practice to maintain. Learning an instrument as a kid doesn't mean you'll be able to just play it later if you don't keep up with practice. Other things may be a bit rusty but with a bit of focus, the old skills come back. For some reason, it's not like that with riding a bike. In fact the phrase “It's just like riding a bike” is meant to imply that once you've learned it, it's learned. Don't do it for a while and then hop on, and off you'll go. In this week's episode - sparked by a video posted by a friend - a bit of reminiscing about the day I learned how to ride without training wheels. It was about freedom and in hindsight it is clear that the lessons from that day actually became how I have moved through the world since. In a world where what passes for radical honesty usually means someone is just letting things fly outta their pie-hole without much care for others, it's time for radically authentic conversation. Conscious communication is simple, but often isn't easy. That's why Cathy Brooks created Talk, Unleashed – a weekly podcast of radically honest conversation about — everything. Whether her own musings or in conversation with industry leaders, each episode invites curiosity. Curiosity not about what people do, but why they do it. Who they are and what makes them tick. It's about digging underneath to reveal the thing that is most true - that we are more alike than we are not. A mix of solo episodes where Cathy shares her insights and experience or Cathy engaged in conversation with fascinating humans doing amazing things. No matter the format - it's unvarnished, radically honest and entirely unleashed.  This podcast compliments Unleashed Leadership, the coaching business through which Cathy works with symphony orchestras, corporate clients, and individuals to help them unleash and untether their leadership and connect with others in a way that truly engages. #ridingabike #trainingwheels #consciouscommunication #leadership #thomasguide #gps #Conversation #connection #TalkUnleashed #fiercecompassion #UnleashedConversation #UnleashedLeadership #FixYourEndofTheLeash

Do you remember what it was like learning to ride a bike? It's a series of frustration, falls, anger, tears, and blood. You fail, fail, and fail again, but then, like a light switch turning on, it's easy to ride a bike. In today's episode, host Travis Shelton discusses this topic and how it relates to so many areas of our work, money, and life. If we're willing to put the repetitions in, we're able to accomplish far more than we ever imagined. If we have that mindset, it can change everything! Sarah thinks they should change the phrase "it's just like riding a bike" to mean that something is very hard, doesn't come naturally, and causes great pain because mountain biking is brutal! This is why Susie is very passionate about her hobby of not moving. It's much better for bruise control. We lament the immaturity of the "billionaire community" and wonder why these man babies can't put their energy toward things that make the world better instead of ego inflation. Millionaires have discovered Dollar Stores and their minds are blown. Ants are aplenty, and we are thoroughly grossed out. Hear why a governmental employee quit her job after just a few days because she was the target of a deep fake campaign and doxxing--just for telling the truth. We discuss the "psychic" who sued a doctor for $1M for causing her "psychic abilities" to "vanish," and what the court had to say about this lawsuit. Imagine leaving the comforts the corporate world can provide to find and do something greater than yourself. You can find purpose and fulfillment in helping others through dedication, compassion, and having a good heart. Today's guest has done just that. He is a gentleman I have known for years from the cycling world. I always wondered, “how is he involved in all these things?!” while smiling and making great connections. Chris Doane is a Branding and Digital Marketing Director who found his sense of urgency growing as he approached age 40. He believes that we are all born blessed in some way. He feels strongly that if we're not using those blessings to make a positive impact around us, we are wasting something that is God-given. To this day, he continues to be blessed with a lot of energy to serve his purpose. Through his volunteering at many cycling-based programs, Chris teaches others that the things that seem to cause so much anxiety in life will take a back seat when one's energy goes toward service. He believes that peace and personal satisfaction with life come through embracing a purpose and being relentless about fulfilling it. He also motivates people to ‘keep showing up' and continue to pursue their interests, regardless of anyone's looking or recognizing them. Jesse didn't grow up like the rest of us. He grew up exploring the wonders of the world. At the tender Age of 12 his parents packed Jesse and his brother up, bought a couple of tandem bicycles and with a $40 a day budget they set off. What was suppose to be a few months riding down the Americas soon turned into years of exploring all corners of the world as a family.

You can now apply to get a free bicycle next month through the Bike Chicago program, and the city is adding concrete barriers around miles of bike lanes. While bike and pedestrian advocates applaud these moves, the deaths of four children on bikes and scooters this year show more needs to be done. In addition to pushing for more protections, one way to stay safer on a bike could be a lesson to learn the rules of the road. We're revisiting our bike lesson from last summer with Shameka Turner, who manages Chicago's SAFE (Streets Are For Everybody) Ambassadors program. Turner tells host Jacoby Cochran about the importance of bike safety, what it means to break down cycling stereotypes, and why she wants everyone to grab a helmet and take a ride. This episode was originally published Aug. 30, 2021. Bike lessons are available again this summer through mid-September. Need something to try this weekend? Check out our Summertime Chi Bucket List. On episode seventy eight of Holy Ghost Notes, Matt and Tim talk a little bit about slowing down and taking a break from social media. Then they compare returning to the drum kit to riding a bike and explore what it takes to develop muscle memory vs. mastery. Finally, the guys discuss the commitment that comes alongside friendship, and talk about a recent experience they shared which, in turn, inspires a challenge.
