Guided by Voices [00:58] "Echos Myron" Bee Thousand Scat Records SCAT 35 1994 One of the many classics from this canonical lo-fi album on beautiful translucent blue vinyl. If you're the sort that digs the 33 1/3 book series, there is an excellent one on this album. Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra [03:39] "Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op. 67: Scherzo-Allegro/Allegro; Presto" Beethoven: Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op. 67/Egmont Overture Op. 84/Coriolan Overture, Op. 62/Overture "Leonore" No. 3, Op. 7a Mercury MG 50017 1953 Well, the cover says Beethoven: Eroica Symphony No. 3 in E Flat Major, but instead, it's a completely different Beethoven piece by a different orchestra, on a different label. Ah well. Can't argue with free. Otto Klemperer conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra [12:52] "Symphony No. 8 in F Major, Op. 93: II. Allegretto Scherzando" Symphony No. 1 & No. 8 Angel Records 35657 1958 Supposedly this is a parody of a metronome. Gotta love musical jokes. And yes, Otto Klemperer is the father of beloved actor Werner Klemperer. Bob Dylan/The Band [18:38] "All Along the Watchtower" Before the Flood Asylum Records AB-201 1974 Some interesting items on this double live album. Some less interesting and chaotic things. All Along the Watchtower seems to be a solid symbiosis between Bob and the Band. The Rolling Stones [22:01] "Stray Cat Blues" Beggars Banquet London Records PS 539 A rockin blues number from Jagger and Richards, supposedly inspired by VU's Heroin. It also features Brian Jones on mellotron. The beginning of the end for Mr. Jones. Cannonball Adderley [26:39] "Spectacular" Beginnings Mercury EMS-2-404 1976 Recorded February 6, 1975, with Nat Adderley on cornet, Junior Mance on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Fine Arts Quartet [31:25] "String Quartet No. 6, I. Mesto - Più mosso, pesante - vivace/II. Mesto - Marcia" Bela Bartók Streichquartette Nr. 5 (1934) Nr. 6. (1939) Barenreiter Musicaphon BM 30 L 1803 This selection used to belong to the Djerassi Foundation in Woodside CA. I wonder which artist liberated this from their collection. Stevie Nicks [47:23] "Edge of Seventeen" Bella Donna Modern Records MR 38-139 1981 Quadruple platinum from everyone's favorite witchy woman, on the record label that Stevie co-founded with Danny Goldberg and Paul Fishkin. Jimmy Buffett [01:17] "Dallas" A1A ABC Dunhill DSD-50183 1974 Still the decent country-oriented Buffett. This one was penned by the Coral Reefer's guitarist Roger Bartlett. Made it to number 25 on the Billboard 200. Darryl Hall & John Oates [04:42] "She's Gone" Abandoned Luncheonette Atlantic Records SD 7269 1973 To be honest, I really like "Las Vegas Turnaround", the track that precedes "She's Gone" but sometimes you just have to go with the hits. It's possible that somewhere out there in listener land, there is someone who has never heard "She's Gone". Hit #33 on the charts and turned platinum 29 years after its release. ABBA [10:09] "SOS" ABBA Atlantic Records SD 18146 1975 Too many tracks to choose from! I almost went with "Hey Hey Helen" but in the I had to send for help. While the album only just dented the Billboard 200 reaching #174, as a single "SOS" made it to #15 on the Hot 100. Count Basie Orchestra [13:31] "Jumpin' at the Woodside" The ABC Collection ABC Records AC-30004 1976 A 1976 reissue of Count Basie's 1969 Dot Records release Standing Ovation, recorded at the Tropicana in Las Vegas. Chelsea Wolfe [18:49] "Crazy Love" Abyss Sargent House SH141 2015 Continuing her evolution, this is one of the more brooding tracks from this excellent Sargent House release. This was also the first Chelsea Wolfe album to chart, making it up to #130. I'll also take this opportunity to let interested parties know that if you have the opportunity to see Chelsea Wolfe live, you should do it. Kiss [22:21] "New York Groove" Ace Frehley Casablanca Records NBLP 7121 1978 Back in the New York Groove, backed by such NY session musicians as Anton Fig and Will Lee. Of course this album made it well into the Billboard 200, peaking out at 26. It was also certified platinum a month after its release. Of course this is in the pre-Soundscan days, so that just meant that 1,000,000 copies of the album were shipped out, which explains why I picked up this remaindered copy for $1. Luke Sweeney [25:29] "Sympathy for the Night" Adventure: Us Aerobic International 2014 Speaking of grooves, this track by Bay Area musican Luke Sweeney has a very solid one. Nilsson [28:30] "One" Aerial Ballet RCA Victor LSP-3956 1968 Again, so many great songs to choose from, some of which we'll hear as we progress through the season, but I decided to go with this "One" ^.^ While this track failed to chart as a single, a year later Three Dog Night would take their rendition all the way up to number 5 on the Hot 100. Havens, Richie [32:45] "To Give All Your Love Away" Alarm Clock Stormy Forest SFS 6005 1971 A vert solid jam from Ritchie Haven's most successful album, featuring Rick Derringer on electric guitar. Monty Python [35:37] "Constitutional Peasants" Album to the Soundtrack of the Trailer of the Film of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Executive Version Arista AB 4050 1975 Seems relevant. Alison Moyet [38:37] "Honey for Bees" Alf Columbia Records BFC 39956 1984 A solo outing from the vocal powerhouse half of Yaz, produced by early 80s mega producers Jolley & Swain. Patti Austin covered this song as a single a year later and took it into the top dance club singles. Moev [42:48] "Alibis" Alibis Nettwerk 12 NTWK 11 1984 I had almost forgotten about this Canadian synth pop outfit. I had their album Yeah, Whatever once upon a time as a cassette, and then this 12" single recently made it into my collection. Hakuna matata. The She’s [49:22] "Eva's Interlude/Anywhere But Here" All Female Rock and Roll Quartet Empty Cellar Records EMP 034 2017 Great band, great album, and a great interlude! The vinyl release has a fantastic bookley featuring artwork by women who inspire the band. Earth, Wind & Fire [54:24] "Magic Mind" All n’ All Columbia Records 34905 1977 Yet still even more hot stuff from Earth Wind & Fire. The gents made it all the way up to number 3 on the album charts and went on to go triple platinum. Diana Ross [58:09] "Upside Down" All the Great Hits Motown M13-960C2 1981 Defintely enjoying the handywork of Chic's Nile Rodger and Bernard Edwards on this late-disco classic. Sarah Vaughan [01:02:15] "It's Delovely" All Time Favorites Mercury Wing MGW 12123 1965 Two great classics that taste great together. I'm talking about Sarah Vaughan and Cole Porter. The Ladybug Transistor a: "Brighton Bound" b: "Cienfuegos (Cicada Sonata)" Elefant Records ER-226 (2000) For all you fellow Elephant 6 (https://youtu.be/vagJ7osygw) fans. **_ Bonny Billy/Rainywood a: "Brother Warrior" b: "Cornflower Blue" Palace Records PR27 (2002) Once upon a time I was a Palace/Will Oldham/Bonnie 'Prince' Billy completist. I was fortunate enough to pick up this single at a BPB show in Monte Rio CA, of all places, in 2002. Rainywood played that date as well. Rainywood would later become Brightblack Morning Light (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brightblack_Morning_Light). Chuck Berry & His Combo a: "Brown Eyed Handsome Man" b: "Too Much Monkey Business" Chess Records 1635 (1956) Never too much monkey business (https://youtu.be/2cFgCUIJL2g) as far as this simian is concerned. The Rolling Stones a: "Brown Sugar" b: "Bitch" Rolling Stones Records RS-19100 (1971) Here's Keef and The Rooster checking out a mix of Brown Sugar (https://youtu.be/4rlGoDD-Vt8). The Rock and Roll Dubble Bubble Trading Card Co. of Philadelphia a: "Bubble Gum Music" b: "On a Summer Night" Buddah Records BDA 78 (1968) Seems like the perfect branding fit and namedropping all the while with the likes of Boyce and Hart (https://youtu.be/mfnlBXLHd08), The Monkees (https://youtu.be/tNqUufWLfZc), and 1910 Fruitgum Company (https://youtu.be/93zZ8_KO4pA). Talking Heads a: "Burning Down the House" b: "I Get Wild/Wild Gravity" Sire Records 7-29565 (1983) Sure they got the attention of us nerds with Once in a Lifetime (https://youtu.be/I1wg1DNHbNU), but this was pretty much their breakout, reaching all the way to Number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. Madonna a: "Burning Up" b: "Physical Attraction" Sire Records 7-29609 Easily my favorite Madonna single (https://youtu.be/pufec0Hps00), no question. Mike Watt's rendition (https://youtu.be/BjpKb3rb2Qc) is pretty rad too. The B side could easily have been 3 minutes shorter. Music Behind the DJ: “Gomez” by Vic Mizzy (1964). Cover image: Selma Blair as Liz Sherman in Hellboy 2: The Golden Army (del Toro, 2008). If you are a fan of podcast applications, you can use http://vinylomatic.com/rss to subscribe.
