She adopted the name Cat Power for her first band in 1992, and has since used the name as a moniker for all of her musical endeavors. Raised in the South primarily by her grandmother, Marshall showed interest in music at an early age, and was influenced by blues and rock'n'roll. In the early nineties, Marshall relocated to New York City, and became acquainted with Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth after opening at a show for Liz Phair. Shelley subsequently drummed on her first two albums, Dear Sir (1995) and Myra Lee (1996), both somber indie rock records featuring sparse instrumentation. After releasing several blues and folk rock-influenced albums throughout the late 1990s, Marshall released The Covers Record in 2000, which included a cover of "Sea of Love" that was featured prominently in the film Juno (2007). She released three more albums, You Are Free (2003), featuring collaborations with Dave Grohl and Eddie Vedder; The Greatest (2006); and Jukebox (2008). Marshall has had several endeavors in modeling, and has been cited as a muse of Marc Jacobs and Karl Lagerfeld. She made her acting debut in the film My Blueberry Nights (2007) in a minor supporting role alongside Jude Law. Her most recent record, Sun (2012) was released to critical acclaim, and entered the Billboard 200 at number 10, making it her first top-ten album in the United States. LINQUA FRANQA BIO: Linqua Franqa is a cultural worker and emcee from Athens, Georgia. Their sophomore album, Bellringer, is also their PhD dissertation in Language and Literacy Education at the University of Georgia.
Emma Tricca is a massively talented singer-songwriter, a poet, and beautiful fingerstyle guitarist. Italian by birth, Emma works between Rome, London and New York making gorgeous psychedelic folk rock records - her latest is called 'Aspirin Sun' it is out now and it's rather wonderful. You may have seen Emma on tour with such luminaries as Robyn Hitchcock, Dinosaur Jr. or Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets - that wonderful band put together to play early Pink Floyd songs. If not, then I hope this interview may serve as an introduction to some very beautiful music. What I really enjoy about Emma's work are the amazing textures she creates with her full band that also includes Dream Syndicate's Jason Victor on electric guitar as well as Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth on drums and Pete Galub on bass. That is quite a line-up...in many ways the cream of the New York art rock scene. This interview was recorded on a hot day at the beginning of summer and I had invited Emma to visit me at home to get her out into the countryside and away from the heat and grit of London. And, In a Life on the Fretboard first, I had the pleasure of making some music with a guest - in this case one of Emma's songs which I have been semi-obsessed with since I first heard it. The link to that is in the description below. I'm on Telecaster and Emma is playing my Gretsch White Falcon - I hope you enjoy it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CK71DfcHPOc You can support this podcast here: https://michaelwattsguitar.com/tip-jars/4745 Download Emma Tricca's latest record here https://emmatricca.bandcamp.com/album/aspirin-sun Thank you to my sponsors for this episode: Microtech Gefell Microphones https://www.microtechgefell.de Mirabella Guitars https://www.mirabellaguitars.com
SONIC YOUTH – EVOL with special guest Dave Hallam This interview took place before and after we listened to the vinyl album. EVOL – Sonic Youth Released in May 1986, Evol is the third full-length studio album by Sonic Youth. A raucous but beguiling mix of dissonance, attitude, weird guitar tunings, and beating rhythms (it was their first album with drummer Steve Shelley). Sonic Youth have been lauded by the likes of David Bowie who described them as the most Important group of the 1980s. Sonic Youth released two further albums in the Eighties, Sister and Daydream Nation, but in the opinion of the website Pitchfork, Evil is “the true departure point of Sonic Youth's musical evolution … where the seeds of greatness were sown”. With special guest DAVE HASLAM Dave Haslam is a DJ and writer whose 2018 memoir ‘Sonic Youth Slept on My Floor' was hailed as book of the year by Gilles Peterson – he's also the author of several other full-length and short format books. He staged two Sonic Youth shows in Manchester, in May 1986 and June 1987. He interviewed the band in Leeds for his fanzine and reviewed EVOL for ‘NME' on its release. In the interviewer's chair was RYAN WALKER. Happy Trails. This event took place on 27th July 2023 in the Pigeon Loft at The Robin Hood, Pontefract, West Yorkshire. In May of 1986 Sonic Youth released their 3rd full length studio album. It was their first on SST and the first to include new drummer, Steve Shelley. The album marks where the band introduced pop elements to their cacophonous racket. Lets talk Sonic Youth, EVOL!

Ese era el marco y los precedentes con los que Kim Gordon, Thurston Moore, Steve Shelley y Lee Ranaldo se metieron al estudio para grabar esta importante obra en su trayectoria.

This week on the show, we're joined by Chicago indie trio Horsegirl—Penelope Lowenstein, Nora Cheng and Gigi Reece. Their new album, Versions of Modern Performance, out now on Matador Records, echoes classic indie rock—think Sonic Youth (after all, Lee Ranaldo and Steve Shelley guest star on one song), Dinosaur Jr, The Clean, and The Breeders. But what really makes it such a compelling listen is the interplay between these three young people. Horsegirl does everything as a group, from answering emails to taking meetings, so naturally all three members join host Jason P. Woodbury to dig in, discussing high school, how the pandemic solidified their band, working at Electrical Audio with producer John Agnello, and trading off on a Bass VI instead of a standard four-string. We hope you enjoy this episode. If you do, please consider leaving us a rating and or review. It helps new folks find the show. Transmissions airs wherever you get podcasts each Wednesday. We had the pleasure of interviewing Duquette Johnston over Zoom video!Duquette Johnston has shared "Mystics," an ode to the enduring strength of unconditional love and the emotional toll we face when nearly losing it. Written by the Birmingham, Alabama musician for his wife and creative partner Morgan, the song centers on finding beauty in those unbreakable bonds when it feels like everything else around you is falling apart. For Duquette and Morgan, this came as they built their lives together with a focus on giving back in the aftermath of his treacherous cycle through Alabama's prison system - and once again years later as Morgan developed a life-threatening condition after becoming pregnant with their first child. A founding member of the breakout 90s indie band Verbena, Johnston got his musical start signing to Merge Records and touring alongside other ascendant acts of the era like The Strokes and Foo Fighters. In the years that followed, a non-violent drug charge found him stuck in a prison system more focused on "zero tolerance" than recovery and rehabilitation - an experience that's led Johnston to become a vocal advocate for prison reform in his home state of Alabama. With only a select few album releases since leaving prison for the last time in the mid-2000s, The Social Animals marks Duquette's first new record since 2013 and finds him reuniting with friends and collaborators from his indie rock past; including producer John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr, Hop Along, Waxahatchee, Twin Peaks, Kurt Vile) and a band anchored by longtime Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley. The results are a sonic world of spiraling guitars, cavernous beats and Johnston's deeply-learned lessons on the idea that "we can lift each other up. We can change things if we keep our hearts in the right place.”Johnston has previously shared the advance singles "Year To Run" and "To My Daughters" from the record. We want to hear from you! Duquette Johnston, a founding member of the breakout 90s indie band Verbena and now an acclaimed solo artist, joins Rhett from Birmingham, AL. to talk about his new album, Social Animals, and the road to his creative life. Duq explains the evolution of his creative process, why he's never had a Plan B, and how he eventually worked through the fear of success that was holding him back.By his own admission Duquette Johnston has lived a "wild, incredible life," but even that might be underselling the three-act 25-year journey that's led to the Alabama musician's new album The Social Animals. In bringing the new album to life, Johnston drew from his indie rock past to unite a remarkable group of collaborators. This team included producer John Agnello - known for his work with Dinosaur Jr as well as recent albums from Hop Along, Waxahatchee, Twin Peaks and Kurt Vile - and a band anchored by longtime Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley. Through their spiraling guitars and cavernous beats, Johnston shares deeply-learned messages on the common theme that "we can lift each other up. We can change things, if we keep our hearts in the right place.” Be sure to listen to Rhett's interview with David Wax, the other half of David Wax Museum. Though Sonic Youth ended a decade ago, the band's archives have continued to surprise. The latest from the SY vault is In/Out/In (Three Lobed Recordings), a collection of instrumentals recorded during the band's final era, including some with Jim O'Rourke and contributions from The Eternal bassist Mark Ibold. Ahead of the album's release, Lee Ranaldo and Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth join host Jason P. Woodbury to discuss The Simpsons, the band's Geffen years, stolen (and recovered) guitars, the science fiction of William Gibson and Philip K. Dick, and much more on this episode of Transmissions, Aquarium Drunkard's weekly podcast.
The Smile, el nuevo grupo formado por Thom Yorke y Jonny Greenwood de Radiohead y Tom Skinner de Sons Of Kemet, ha revelado su single de debut ‘You Will Never Work In Television Again'. Reptaliens estrenan "take it", nuevo adelanto pop de Multiverse, su nuevo disco. MORGAN continúan la gira presentación THE RIVER TOUR.

RockerMike and Rob with special guest Deron discuss Sonic Youth. Sonic Youth was an American rock band based in New York City, formed in 1981. Founding members Thurston Moore (guitar, vocals), Kim Gordon (bass, vocals, guitar) and Lee Ranaldo (guitar, vocals) remained together for the entire history of the band, while Steve Shelley (drums) followed a series of short-term drummers in 1985, rounding out the core line-up. Jim O'Rourke (bass, keyboards, guitar) was also a member of the band from 1999 to 2005, and Mark Ibold (guitar, bass) was a member from 2006 to 2011. Sonic Youth emerged from the experimental no wave art and music scene in New York before evolving into a more conventional rock band and becoming a prominent member of the American noise rock scene. Sonic Youth have been praised for having "redefined what rock guitar could do"[1] using a wide variety of unorthodox guitar tunings while preparing guitars with objects like drum sticks and screwdrivers to alter the instruments' timbre. The band was a pivotal influence on the alternative and indie rock movements. http://www.sonicyouth.com/ https://mobile.twitter.com/thesonicyouth?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor https://www.facebook.com/sonicyouth?__cmr=1&refsrc=deprecated&_rdr https://www.npr.org/artists/15373040/sonic-youth Please follow us on Youtube,Facebook,Instagram,Twitter,Patreon and at www.gettinglumpedup.com https://linktr.ee/RobRossi Get your T-shirt at https://www.prowrestlingtees.com/gettinglumpedup And https://www.bonfire.com/store/getting-lumped-up/ https://app.hashtag.expert/?fpr=roberto-rossi80 https://dc2bfnt-peyeewd4slt50d2x1b.hop.clickbank.net https://8bcded2xph1jdsb8mqp8th3y0n.hop.clickbank.net/?cbpage=nb Subscribe to the channel and hit the like button --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rob-rossi/support https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/getting-lumped-up-with-rob-rossi/id1448899708 https://open.spotify.com/show/00ZWLZaYqQlJji1QSoEz7a https://www.patreon.com/Gettinglumpedup #sonicyouth #sonicyouthshirt #sonicyouthtshirt #sonicyouthfans #music #musicians #musicianlife #musicproducer #musicvideo #musical --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rob-rossi/support

After the birth of Sonic Youth 40 years ago, indie rock was the never the same again.
Our guest this week practically invented kosmische guitar. As a member of Neu!, Harmonia, and an early incarnation of Kraftwerk, Michael Rother's fluid, emotive playing helped define the sound of krautrock, as the music came up out of Germany's avant-garde underground in the late '60s and headed for the cosmos in the '70s. In 2019, he released of Solo, a multi-disc boxed set that documented the first part of his solo career and on September 4th, the Forst-based guitarist and composer follows that collection up with Solo II, which includes 1983's Lust , 1985's Süssherz und Tiefenschärfe, 1987's Traumreisen, 1996's Esperanza, 2004's Remember (The Great Adventure) and a brand-new album, Dreaming, which finds him returning to the spaced out pastoral drift of his classic albums. He was kind enough to join us on Transmissions to discuss his musical youth in India, his days as a conscientious objector, his collaborations with Klaus Dinger, Roedelius, Moebius, and his experiences with younger musicians who were inspired by his sound, including the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth.

YOU DON’T KNOW MOJACK is a podcast dedicated to exploring the entire SST catalogue, in order, from start to finish. During the podcast we will discuss all the releases that are part of our core DNA, as well as many lesser-known releases that deserve a second chance, or releases that we are discovering for the very first time (we actually don’t know Mojack!). First and foremost we are fans, and acknowledge that we are not perfect and don’t know everything – sometimes the discussion is more about a time, place, feeling, personal experience or random tangents, and less about the facts (but we will try to get to the facts too). Hilary talks to Ava Mendoza about sedans, music store paranoia, and the nuances of being “you go girl”-ed. AVA'S BIO AVA MENDOZA is a Brooklyn-based guitarist, singer, songwriter and composer. Born in 1983, she started performing her own music, and as a sidewoman and collaborator in many different projects, as soon as she was legally allowed into clubs. As a guitarist, Mendoza has received acclaim for her technique and viscerality. Her most ongoing work is as leader of experimental rock band Unnatural Ways, and as a solo performer on guitar/voice. In any context she is committed to bringing expressivity, energy and a wide sonic range to the music. Mendoza has toured throughout the U.S. and Europe and recorded/performed with musicians including Carla Bozulich, Fred Frith, Adele Bertei, Malcolm Mooney, Steve Shelley, Mike Watt, Ikue Mori, Mick Barr, William Hooker, Nels Cline, John Zorn, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, William Parker, Hamid Drake, Matt Mitchell, Jon Irabagon, Matana Roberts, members of Caroliner, ROVA, Negativland, the Violent Femmes, and more. Recordings are available on labels Tzadik, Astral Spirits, Weird Forest, Clean Feed, Resipiscent, and New Atlantis. Friendly critics have quoted: “It's… Ava Mendoza's deconstructing of blues and punk into brutal shredfests that's causing a ruckus in NYC's DIY hubs” (Brad Cohan, Noisey.Vice). “A wizard on a semi-circle of effects pedals, but… equally adept with FX-less technique," (Lars Gotrich, NPR). "Mendoza plays these songs. She makes them sing. Her technique is impeccable, but her playing is astonishingly expressive. She doesn't just bend blue notes; she wads them up into a ball and throws them up against a wall... Mendoza knows what she does better than almost anyone else on the planet, which is tell stories with her guitar." (Aiding & Abetting). In just a couple of weeks, on December 6th, we will be bringing the SaaStock experience all the way to SaaStock Oceania in Sydney. On this week's episode, we bring you another great speaker we will host there - Ashik Ahmed, CEO and CTO of Deputy. Ashik will talk about the shit he wishes he knew as he was growing the company. One of the central themes in that is the learning curve in making better decisions, which is the subject of this week's podcast. Ashik and his co-founder Steve Shelley founded Deputy ten years ago after grappling with scaling issues at Steve's previous company where Ashik worked. As they fixed a lot of the problems, many people in Ashik's network would enquire how it had happened. The problem of managing work and workers was huge so they decided to fix it. Bootstrapped for 8 years they relied on whatever they were earning in MRR to grow the company, which called for a specific kind of decisions making - never too long term but always fast-paced. Two years ago, they signed a term sheet with OpenView and have been doubling in size each year since. Listen on to learn: The most impactful advice Ashik ever got about making decisions What aside from applying that framework is essential for making good decisions in a fast-growing SaaS company An example of how Ashik made the decision to go with Openview after pitching to 27 other VC companies On December 6th in Sydney, Ashik will be joined by other exciting speakers such as Alex Fala, CEO, VendHQ, Luke Anear, CEO, Safety Culture and Kirsti Grant, CEO Populate and HOP Ventures. We listen to one of the greatest records of all time and barely scratch the surface of what was happening in and around the recording of this album. It's honestly hard to do this justice of any kind except tell you about some of our interpretations of the record and personal memories to hearing it for the first time. That's what this show is all about after all. We still learn new things about some own these picks and each other. It's a very special episode if you know what I mean.
