This week, Greg and Jay dive into the legacy of Steve Albini, the legendary recording engineer (which he preferred over the title “producer”) and musician who unexpectedly left us at 61. He was the audio engineer for Pixies 1988 Surfer Rosa, which was incredibly influential on alternative rock and grunge. His refusal of the title “producer” included refusal to accept royalties on the hundreds of artists he went on to record in his lifetime. He just wanted to be hired to record the best version of a band's sound as was possible. We discuss his body of work and legacy and say goodbye, too soon. Plus, what is a song? Nick tries to lighten the mood with a recap of a legal analysis that asks that very question. Fat Chance Is Better Than No Chance With CLINTON JACOB & DANNY SEIN From MR. PHYLZZZ

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris PetersAs the name would suggest, Mr. Phlyzzz (pronounced Flyzzz) are not your average entertainment machine.More like an amalgamation of every musical genre that your Mother warned you about - and some she should have - Mr. Phylzzz is best described as a noise rock duo, but even that doesn't do their sound justice.Comprised of guitarist/vocalist Clinton Jacob and drummer Danny Sein, Mr. Phylzzz is a musical entity unto themselves, shedding every ounce of expectation and instead dousing the sonic flame with a devastating wall of noise that simply has to be heard to be understood. And heard it shall be in the form of their recently released album Fat Chance. An album the band has proclaimed is "definitely a bit different than the previous album, especially tonally" and their "most straight forward and focussed record yet", what Fat Chance is, is a breath of fresh air on a musical landscape that is becoming increasingly mundane and predictable. It is an unrelenting, dynamically charged assortment of tunes that challenges all music conventions and dares to experiment on a scale few bands these days even contemplate, let alone commit to recording. With Fat Chance landing on the HEAVY desk last week amid more than a couple of cries of WTF, when the opportunity to become better acquainted with the men behind the sonic trail of destruction came up we jumped at the chance."It's a lot heavier than what has gone in the past," Jacob offered. "It's a lot more of a straight forward record. We put that together at Electrical Audio in Chicago, Illinois, which is right down the road from our practice space. "We've been playing these songs live for a year coming off the last release Cancer Culture Club. That's enough time for me. I work really quick and Dan works really quick. We felt good about the songs - I'm not about fillers, I'm about killers - so it's a short record for a reason. I don't put fillers out. I just put what I believe in."Going back to the bands statement about being different from previous releases, we ask the boys in what way."On the last record Cancer Culture Club Clinton wrote all the tracks himself and produced them in his apartment," Sein replied. "That had a much more noisy, chaotic feel to it. He left things in, like his cat would be meowing in the room and he would leave that in the song. So it's got a different atmosphere to it. With Fat Chance it's a lot more straightforward. When you listen to it, it's kind of like how we play the songs live. Normally when we play there aren't really any chances to breathe in a sense because it's just Bam, Bam, Bam and in your face. It's short and sweet and it's got a big, huge drum sound. It's a lot more like... hi-fi. But we're using that beautiful studio space so there's fancy mikes, fancy equipment and all that."In the full interview, the boys talk more about the sound on Fat Chance, the more polished way it was recorded and what effect that had on the finished product, their creative process, the title and where it comes from, their perception of how many songs constitutes an album and how many for an LP, a history of the band, their sound and how it works, heading out on the road with The Melvins and Boris and more.

They then go into great detail about working with legendary producer Steve Albini at Electrical Audio in Chicago, Illinois. You will hear vignettes and insights into what Albini did and didn't do in the studio, and how he is an audio engineer rather than a music producer.  Also, Jarvis describes the lyrical inspiration of the song: how it connects to Phil Lynott, how it harkens back to a song Jarvis wrote about Marilyn Monroe many years ago, and how it is also an autobiographical track for him. Become a subscriber today at nightdemon.net/subscriber. My guest today is Nick Broste, an audio engineer and musician who works in a wide variety of musical situations, ranging from creative improvisation to popular, folk and new music forms. He has engineered hundreds of recordings and performed all over the world, from tiny clubs to huge festivals and live television.   Having spent much of his youth obsessed with music but in a small midwestern town, Nick moved to Chicago in 1996, where he attended music school and began performing around the city and on the road, all the while soaking up any new sounds he could find. Touring with bands led to performing in the recording studio, where he began to get interested in the capture, manipulation and reproduction of audio.  In 2005 Nick moved into the Shape Shoppe, an underground music, art and living space with a 16 track analog studio, where he was able to experiment and teach himself how to record, eventually re-designing and completely rebuilding the space in 2008. At the same time Nick began mixing bands live in venues, trying to give both the musicians and audiences the best experience possible. This spirit of removing the obstacles of artistic expression for artists is the driving force for Nick's work to this day, no matter which side of the microphone he is on. Nick can currently be found working freelance in studios such as Electrical Audio, Shirk, Palisade, Narwhal and Jamdek in Chicago, around the world and wherever interesting sounds are being made. And his clients include Wilco, TV on the Radio, Broken Social Scene, The Walkmen, Cursive, Mucca Pazza, Head of Femur, Calexico/Iron & Wine, and Afghan Whigs to name just a few. Based in Cleveland, Ohio, the band started in 2009 in Dylan Baldi’s parents’ basement as one of several “fake” MySpace bands. However, over the years, the act slowly gained a following after being invited to open for Woods and Real Estate. Not long after, the Dylan was signed to Carpark Records as a one man band. The record we look at today was their third release, but the first Cloud Nothings album to feature frontman Dylan Baldi’s live band as full time members. It was also recorded with producer/engineer Steve Albini at Electrical Audio, so that’s pretty rad. These changes resulted in a heavier and darker sounding album than the previous power pop tracks that the band was known for. The dads also get off topic and talk about Creed and the Corona Virus.

Steve Albini is regarded as one of the top recording engineers in the world, and has been creating music with his bands Big Black, Rapeman, and Shellac, since 1981. As the owner of Electrical Audio in Chicago, Albini has produced thousands of albums and has worked with numerous notable acts such as Nirvana, Bush, The Pixies, The Breeders, Chevelle, PJ Harvey, Joanna Newsom, Jawbreaker, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, and Cheap Trick.Despite having his name on some of the most memorable indie rock albums ever made, Albini chooses not to collect royalties and instead earns a flat rate for his time, leaving more cash on the table for the artists themselves. As a result, he has been relying on poker to supplement his income for several years. Albini has been competing in a regular low-stakes home game for years that includes several World Series of Poker bracelet winners, including Brandon Shack-Harris, Eric Rodawig, Jason Gola, Matt Ashton, and Matt Grapenthien. Albini has WSOP cashes dating back to 2010, and in 2018, he earned a bracelet of his own, taking down the $1,500 stud event for $105,629.Highlights from this interview include mixed games with Norman Chad, fires so big they make their own weather, The Problem With Music, Go-go with Dave Grohl, balancing time for touring, engineering, and poker, ignoring his day job for Bill Withers, Bush's surprising American success, the stacked game above a bakery, whammy cards, being ethically poorer than he should be, working differently than Phil Spector and Brian Wilson, Jeff Lisandro reads from Matt Ashton, wearing a guitar like a belt, quitting drummers and nude singers, prank calling Gene Simmons for Kurt Cobain, cured bacon, Krakow poker, being 3% gamble, the problem with circular glasses, Fun House by The Stooges, tar targets in concrete bunkers, and the Krispy Kreme donuts at Gwen Stefani's wedding.

Aseethe’s Throes is a work of corrosive beauty and colossal weight. The trio of guitarist/vocalist Brian Barr, drummer Eric Diercks, and bassist/vocalist Noah Koester craft tectonic slabs of doom through minimalist approaches to composition. Minutely selected textures built on simplistic, repetitive motifs become mountainous. With each cycle of repetition, their towering riffs, bludgeoning drums, and inhuman howls become increasingly hypnotic and reveal subtle intricacies. The recursive nature of their songs coupled with their glacial pacing make masterful use of restraint to create moments of genuine surprise. On Throes, these elements coalesce into songs as detailed as they are visceral and scathing. Where their previous album Hopes of Failure centered around hopelessness, Throes turns its focus toward wrath. Barr, who composed and arranged the bulk of the music, sees the album as a direct continuation and a response to the damage and exhaustion caused by the shifts in the political and environmental landscape. Koester penned much of the album’s biting, politically-charged lyrics, aiming vicious barks at fascists and profiteers alike. Despite being Aseethe’s newest member, Koester’s contributions came naturally, having grown up in the same Iowan DIY community the band has been integral to for over a decade. Aseethe embraces that sense of community and resistance which Koester bolsters by lyrically capturing the unease of living in “fly over” territory and its wintery desolation. Throes was recorded at Steve Albini’s Chicago studio Electrical Audio by Shane Hochstetler (Jon Mueller, Northless). Aseethe drew from their expertise in utilizing noise and drones to develop a sonic world uniquely their own, dually aesthetic and foreboding. Distant cymbal swells and feedback loops on “To Victory” mirror the endlessly open landscape of their home. The instrumental “Suffocating Burden” makes use of processed feedback and panning drones made from both heavily effected guitar and amplified gong suspended between speakers. Barr drew inspiration from his recent solo work live-scoring films, relying on instinct as a compositional tool to interplay with the rigid structures throughout. Aseethe remains one of the most distinctive and relentless forces in heavy music operating today. Through their ability to constantly evolve and incorporate new sounds and disparate influences into their music, they stand at the vanguard of forward thinking bands like labelmates The Body and SUMAC. Throes is Aseethe at their most daring and focused, building monuments of anguish while thrusting into the void.
