John Williams, London Symphony Orchstra [00:23] "The Desert and The Robot Auction" Star Wars 20th Century Records 2T-541 1977 Pretty much every aspect of this soundtrack is seared into my Gen X nerd mind. Silver Jews [03:15] "Advice to the Graduate" Starlite Walker Drag City DC55 1994 The debut outing from David Berman and friends, here including partners in crime Steve Malkmus, Bob Nastanovich, and even Steve West. There is also a lovely cover of this song by The Pastels (https://youtu.be/tQ1vuKAGmUo?si=y7G-DZUy094zyJUf) (recorded for a Peel session). Lena Lovich [06:30] "I Think We're Alone Now" Stateless Stiff Records SEEZ 7 1978 (1979 reissue) From the original UK Stiff Records release of Stateless, a very first-wave New Wave version of "I Think We're Alone Now", originally recorded by Tommy James and the Shondells. Also available in Japanese! (https://youtu.be/URPtOAs_eMc?si=zX0h-wST3jcLzadK) Lena Lovich [09:18] "Lucky Number" Stateless Stiff-Epic JE 36102 1979 The US version changes up the track order, and has a number of songs remixed by Roger Bichirian. David Bowie [13:47] "Golden Years" Station to Station RCA Victor AQL1-1327 1976 (1986 reissue) Carlos Alomar and Earl Slick laying down the funky guitars. The cover features a photograph of Bowie by Steve Shapiro from Nicholas Roeg's The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) (https://youtu.be/KarWCgIw3Wk?si=52k2oqnxkEJ2HNah). Sinéad O'Connor [17:46] "Some Day My Prince Will Come" Stay Awake (Various Interpretations of Music from Vintage Disney Films) A&M Records B0029005-01 1988 (2018 reissue) The late great Sinéad O'Connor interpreting Snow White's ballad accompanied by the late great Andy Rourke from the late great Hal Willner. Willner was one of the most imaginative music producers, responsible for so many excellent tribute albums, and one of the most innovative music shows on network television: Night Music (https://youtu.be/ChPPW6NbsFk?si=AusrNnmpxTl4mWUI). Graham Parker and the Shot [18:55] "Wake Up (Next to You)" Steady Nerves Elektra 9 60388-1 1985 Graham gets all romantic in a Motown sorta way. This single made it as high as 39 on the Hot 100. Graham Parker and the Rumour [24:00] "I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down" Stick to Me Mercury SRM-1-3706 1977 Graham and company do a fine rendition of this song that was initally a hit for Ann Peebles (https://youtu.be/cyMsvE8UcbI?si=VqkTZdDF9ubuspVT). The Rolling Stones [29:35] "Dead Flowers" Sticky Fingers Rolling Stones Records COC 59100 1972 The first album the Stones recorded after being freed from their Decca Records obligation. This copy has one of the actual working zippers, as designed by Andy Warhol. Many listeners will also be familiar with Townes van Zandt's acoustic version that appears on his live album Roadsongs, and was subsequently used in The Big Lebowski (Coen, 1998). The Aquadolls [33:40] "Tweaker Kidz" Stoked on You Burger Records BRGR390 2014 Fun track from the debut Aquadolls album. Talking Heads [36:06] "Once in a Lifetime" Stop Making Sense Sire 1-25186 1984 There was a very cute promo (https://youtu.be/R2gVgpHIDz0?si=UfreL9mJCNr_K3iC) for the A24 re-release of the film recently. Nadja [42:03] "The Stone" The Stone Is Not Hit by the Sun, Nor Carved with a Knife Gizeh Records GZH70 2016 As usual, more heavy dreamy goodness from one of my favorite duos. Kid606 [00:39] "Let It Rock" Pretty Girls Make Raves Tigerbeat6 meow132 2006 Hello Mid-Aughties Bay Area IDM. Michael Nesmith [05:32] "Some of Shelley's Blues" Pretty Much Your Standard Ranch Stash Pacific Arts/Island Records ILPS 9440 1977 One of my scores from Amsterdam. "Some of Shelley's Blues was going to be part of the Nashville session The Monkees had in 1968. Prior to this version it was also covered by Linda Ronstadt with the Stone Poney's (https://youtu.be/d9cQBGMzigU), as well as the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (https://youtu.be/BXJiqKgl7BI). Willie Nelson [08:52] "Blue Christmas" Pretty Paper Columbia JC 36189 1979 Having yourself a very Willia xmas? Getting some quality assistance from Booker T on the organ. The title track, made famous by Roy Orbison in 1963, is penned by none other than Willie. Prince [11:31] "I Wanna Be Your Lover" Prince Warner Bros. Records BSK 3366 1979 Prince's sophomore effort and what an effort it is! The album made it to number 22 on the Hot 100, and this lead off single (https://youtu.be/Rp8WL621uGM) hit number 11 on the US charts. Linda Ronstadt [18:29] "Hey Mister, That's Me Up on the Jukebox" Prisoner in Disguise Asylum Records 7E-1045 1975 Linda deftly handling this James Taylor number on this multi-platinum album. Emerson Meyers [22:40] "In Memoriam for Soprano & Tape" Provocative Electronics (Electronic Constructions on Traditional Forms) Westminster Gold WGS-8129 1970 Recorded at the Electronic Music Laboratory of the Catholic University of America, of all places, in 1970. Don't worry, I have an insider checking to see whether his laboratory still exists. The Cramps [27:35] "Goo Goo Muck" Psychedlic Jungle I.R.S. Records SP 70016 1981 How timely! The Cramps very well known version of Ronnie Cook and the Gaylads 1962 single. Record fiend friends, let me tell you that I have had a saved eBay search for that original Ronnie Cook single, and it has yet to go for less than three figures. Here's hoping I find it in a random place someday in the future. Thurston Moore [30:40] "Ono Soul" Psychic Hearts Goofin' Records Goo-010 2006 (originally released on DGC in 1995) Thurston hearts the queen of noise. This album features artwork by the excellent Rita Ackermann. Luna [35:53] "Beautiful View" Pup Tent Teenbeat TEENBEAT 232 1997 The fourth studio album from one of my favorite bands. This is one of the few that was released on vinyl at the time. Of course there's also the big beautiful box set (https://www.discogs.com/master/1027116-Luna-Long-Players-92-99). Purple Mountains [39:34] "She's Making Friends, I'm Turning Stranger" Purple Mountains Drag City DC680 2019 Ugh. Sadly, the final David Berman project. A thoroughly engaging album from start to finish.Interested and brave parties can check out this piece on David Berman's final days in the recent issue of Creem (https://www.creem.com/fresh-creem/david-berman-purple-mountains-final-days-feature). Temptations [43:42] "I Can't Get Next to You" Puzzle People Gordy S-949 1969 Such a hot opening track, this copy has been played many times. I tried to salvage it as best as possible. Number one single from a number 5 album. The Who [46:24] "Bell Boy" Quadrophenia (Music from the Soundtrack of The Who Film) Polydor 2625 037 1979 And what a film it is. Who knew that the king of the mods had a day job? Big Blood [51:21] "1000 Times" QuaranTunes Series No.027 Feeding Tube Records FTR634 2021 One of the things that got me through the stay-at-home phase of the pandemic was all of the excellent livestreams from musicians. This particular one from Portland ME's Big Blood was pretty much transcendtal for me. And this particular track featuring Quinissa on vocals scratched an audio itch that I didn't know I had. To really put it over the top for me, they followed it up with a cover of The Clean's "Anything Could Happen" (https://youtu.be/wPGIJdlOkbw?t=2272). Ultravox [55:20] "We Came to Dance" Quartet Chrysalis CDL 1394 1394 The sixth outing from Midge Ure and company. Oddly, produced by George Martin and less oddly cover design by Peter Saville. This track was the fourth and final single from Quartet. Robyn Hitchcock 'n' the Egyptians [59:34] "Madonna of the Wasps" Queen Elvis A&M Records SP 5241 1989 Another musician who had some great livestreams during stay-at-home along with his partner Emma Swift and Tubby and Ringo and Perry the Lobster. This song will forever be one of my favorites of his. Helped out by usual suspect Peter Buck on guitar here. Japan [01:02:39] "Halloween" Quiet Life Fame FA3037 1982 (originally released in 1979) Japan's third album, transitioning into synth pop territory. Music behind the DJ: "Gomez" by Vic Mizzy

Guided by Voices [00:58] "Echos Myron" Bee Thousand Scat Records SCAT 35 1994 One of the many classics from this canonical lo-fi album on beautiful translucent blue vinyl. If you're the sort that digs the 33 1/3 book series, there is an excellent one on this album. Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra [03:39] "Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op. 67: Scherzo-Allegro/Allegro; Presto" Beethoven: Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op. 67/Egmont Overture Op. 84/Coriolan Overture, Op. 62/Overture "Leonore" No. 3, Op. 7a Mercury MG 50017 1953 Well, the cover says Beethoven: Eroica Symphony No. 3 in E Flat Major, but instead, it's a completely different Beethoven piece by a different orchestra, on a different label. Ah well. Can't argue with free. Otto Klemperer conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra [12:52] "Symphony No. 8 in F Major, Op. 93: II. Allegretto Scherzando" Symphony No. 1 & No. 8 Angel Records 35657 1958 Supposedly this is a parody of a metronome. Gotta love musical jokes. And yes, Otto Klemperer is the father of beloved actor Werner Klemperer. Bob Dylan/The Band [18:38] "All Along the Watchtower" Before the Flood Asylum Records AB-201 1974 Some interesting items on this double live album. Some less interesting and chaotic things. All Along the Watchtower seems to be a solid symbiosis between Bob and the Band. The Rolling Stones [22:01] "Stray Cat Blues" Beggars Banquet London Records PS 539 A rockin blues number from Jagger and Richards, supposedly inspired by VU's Heroin. It also features Brian Jones on mellotron. The beginning of the end for Mr. Jones. Cannonball Adderley [26:39] "Spectacular" Beginnings Mercury EMS-2-404 1976 Recorded February 6, 1975, with Nat Adderley on cornet, Junior Mance on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Fine Arts Quartet [31:25] "String Quartet No. 6, I. Mesto - Più mosso, pesante - vivace/II. Mesto - Marcia" Bela Bartók Streichquartette Nr. 5 (1934) Nr. 6. (1939) Barenreiter Musicaphon BM 30 L 1803 This selection used to belong to the Djerassi Foundation in Woodside CA. I wonder which artist liberated this from their collection. Stevie Nicks [47:23] "Edge of Seventeen" Bella Donna Modern Records MR 38-139 1981 Quadruple platinum from everyone's favorite witchy woman, on the record label that Stevie co-founded with Danny Goldberg and Paul Fishkin. Nadja [52:46] "Skin Like Sand" Belles Bêtes Beta-lactam Ring Records 2009 The first of many tracks you will be hearing from the transcendent duo known as Nadja (https://nadja.bandcamp.com/music). Jimmy Buffett [01:17] "Dallas" A1A ABC Dunhill DSD-50183 1974 Still the decent country-oriented Buffett. This one was penned by the Coral Reefer's guitarist Roger Bartlett. Made it to number 25 on the Billboard 200. Darryl Hall & John Oates [04:42] "She's Gone" Abandoned Luncheonette Atlantic Records SD 7269 1973 To be honest, I really like "Las Vegas Turnaround", the track that precedes "She's Gone" but sometimes you just have to go with the hits. It's possible that somewhere out there in listener land, there is someone who has never heard "She's Gone". Hit #33 on the charts and turned platinum 29 years after its release. ABBA [10:09] "SOS" ABBA Atlantic Records SD 18146 1975 Too many tracks to choose from! I almost went with "Hey Hey Helen" but in the I had to send for help. While the album only just dented the Billboard 200 reaching #174, as a single "SOS" made it to #15 on the Hot 100. Count Basie Orchestra [13:31] "Jumpin' at the Woodside" The ABC Collection ABC Records AC-30004 1976 A 1976 reissue of Count Basie's 1969 Dot Records release Standing Ovation, recorded at the Tropicana in Las Vegas. Chelsea Wolfe [18:49] "Crazy Love" Abyss Sargent House SH141 2015 Continuing her evolution, this is one of the more brooding tracks from this excellent Sargent House release. This was also the first Chelsea Wolfe album to chart, making it up to #130. I'll also take this opportunity to let interested parties know that if you have the opportunity to see Chelsea Wolfe live, you should do it. Kiss [22:21] "New York Groove" Ace Frehley Casablanca Records NBLP 7121 1978 Back in the New York Groove, backed by such NY session musicians as Anton Fig and Will Lee. Of course this album made it well into the Billboard 200, peaking out at 26. It was also certified platinum a month after its release. Of course this is in the pre-Soundscan days, so that just meant that 1,000,000 copies of the album were shipped out, which explains why I picked up this remaindered copy for $1. Luke Sweeney [25:29] "Sympathy for the Night" Adventure: Us Aerobic International 2014 Speaking of grooves, this track by Bay Area musican Luke Sweeney has a very solid one. Nilsson [28:30] "One" Aerial Ballet RCA Victor LSP-3956 1968 Again, so many great songs to choose from, some of which we'll hear as we progress through the season, but I decided to go with this "One" ^.^ While this track failed to chart as a single, a year later Three Dog Night would take their rendition all the way up to number 5 on the Hot 100. Havens, Richie [32:45] "To Give All Your Love Away" Alarm Clock Stormy Forest SFS 6005 1971 A vert solid jam from Ritchie Haven's most successful album, featuring Rick Derringer on electric guitar. Monty Python [35:37] "Constitutional Peasants" Album to the Soundtrack of the Trailer of the Film of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Executive Version Arista AB 4050 1975 Seems relevant. Alison Moyet [38:37] "Honey for Bees" Alf Columbia Records BFC 39956 1984 A solo outing from the vocal powerhouse half of Yaz, produced by early 80s mega producers Jolley & Swain. Patti Austin covered this song as a single a year later and took it into the top dance club singles. Moev [42:48] "Alibis" Alibis Nettwerk 12 NTWK 11 1984 I had almost forgotten about this Canadian synth pop outfit. I had their album Yeah, Whatever once upon a time as a cassette, and then this 12" single recently made it into my collection. Hakuna matata. The She’s [49:22] "Eva's Interlude/Anywhere But Here" All Female Rock and Roll Quartet Empty Cellar Records EMP 034 2017 Great band, great album, and a great interlude! The vinyl release has a fantastic bookley featuring artwork by women who inspire the band. Earth, Wind & Fire [54:24] "Magic Mind" All n’ All Columbia Records 34905 1977 Yet still even more hot stuff from Earth Wind & Fire. The gents made it all the way up to number 3 on the album charts and went on to go triple platinum. Diana Ross [58:09] "Upside Down" All the Great Hits Motown M13-960C2 1981 Defintely enjoying the handywork of Chic's Nile Rodger and Bernard Edwards on this late-disco classic. Sarah Vaughan [01:02:15] "It's Delovely" All Time Favorites Mercury Wing MGW 12123 1965 Two great classics that taste great together. I'm talking about Sarah Vaughan and Cole Porter. The Archies [14:48] a side: "Who's Your Baby" b side: "Senorita Rita" Kirshner Records 63-5003 1969 Bubblegum pop with a gospel break on the a-side, and a latin themed flipside? In the immortal tradition of cave people banging on rocks and skulls and strolling troubadours of the Middle Ages, there is also the TV theme song. We take a look at the state of the theme in 1966, which featured songs with one-word lyrics ("Batman") and pop hits ("Secret Agent") as well as songs that did a lot of heavy lifting to explain the often-outlandish concept of the show ("My Mother the Car," "It's About Time"). We also feature a quick salute to one of the masters of the sitcom theme song who was well represented in 1966 -- composer Vic Mizzy.

Vinyl-O-Matic Season 4, Episode 8 45s and Other Revolutions: A-Sides beginning with B, Part 5 L.A. Witch a: "Brian" b: "Untitled" Greenway Records GWY-021 (2016) In case you didn't already know, LA Witch are pretty damned rad (https://youtu.be/7SXQ71YT3Es). The Ladybug Transistor a: "Brighton Bound" b: "Cienfuegos (Cicada Sonata)" Elefant Records ER-226 (2000) For all you fellow Elephant 6 (https://youtu.be/vagJ7osygw) fans. **_ Bonny Billy/Rainywood a: "Brother Warrior" b: "Cornflower Blue" Palace Records PR27 (2002) Once upon a time I was a Palace/Will Oldham/Bonnie 'Prince' Billy completist. I was fortunate enough to pick up this single at a BPB show in Monte Rio CA, of all places, in 2002. Rainywood played that date as well. Rainywood would later become Brightblack Morning Light (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brightblack_Morning_Light). Chuck Berry & His Combo a: "Brown Eyed Handsome Man" b: "Too Much Monkey Business" Chess Records 1635 (1956) Never too much monkey business (https://youtu.be/2cFgCUIJL2g) as far as this simian is concerned. The Rolling Stones a: "Brown Sugar" b: "Bitch" Rolling Stones Records RS-19100 (1971) Here's Keef and The Rooster checking out a mix of Brown Sugar (https://youtu.be/4rlGoDD-Vt8). The Rock and Roll Dubble Bubble Trading Card Co. of Philadelphia a: "Bubble Gum Music" b: "On a Summer Night" Buddah Records BDA 78 (1968) Seems like the perfect branding fit and namedropping all the while with the likes of Boyce and Hart (https://youtu.be/mfnlBXLHd08), The Monkees (https://youtu.be/tNqUufWLfZc), and 1910 Fruitgum Company (https://youtu.be/93zZ8_KO4pA). Talking Heads a: "Burning Down the House" b: "I Get Wild/Wild Gravity" Sire Records 7-29565 (1983) Sure they got the attention of us nerds with Once in a Lifetime (https://youtu.be/I1wg1DNHbNU), but this was pretty much their breakout, reaching all the way to Number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. Madonna a: "Burning Up" b: "Physical Attraction" Sire Records 7-29609 Easily my favorite Madonna single (https://youtu.be/pufec0Hps00), no question. Mike Watt's rendition (https://youtu.be/BjpKb3rb2Qc) is pretty rad too. The B side could easily have been 3 minutes shorter. Music Behind the DJ: “Gomez” by Vic Mizzy (1964). Cover image: Selma Blair as Liz Sherman in Hellboy 2: The Golden Army (del Toro, 2008). If you are a fan of podcast applications, you can use http://vinylomatic.com/rss to subscribe.
