Welcome to this Mad in America podcast. My name is Robert Whitaker, and I'm happy today to have the pleasure of speaking with Joanna Moncrieff. Dr. Moncrieff is a psychiatrist who works in the National Health Service in the United Kingdom. She is a Professor of Critical and Social Psychiatry at University College, London. In 1990 she co-founded the Critical Psychiatry Network, which today has about 400 psychiatrist members, about two-thirds of whom are in the United Kingdom. From my perspective, the Critical Psychiatry Network has been at the forefront of making a broad critique of the disease model of care. Without this network, I don't think that critique would be anywhere near as prominent or as sophisticated as it is today. Dr. Moncrieff is a prolific researcher and writer. Her books include De-Medicalizing Misery, The Bitterest Pills: The Troubling Story of Antipsychotic Drugs, and The Myth of the Chemical Cure. Her latest book is titled Chemically Imbalanced: The Making and Unmaking of the Serotonin Myth. This book in many ways is a follow-up to her 2022 paper which looked at the serotonin story and concluded that there was no good evidence that a serotonergic deficiency was a primary cause of depression. It caused quite a furor within the media and in psychiatry. *** A full transcript of this interview is availabe here: https://www.madinamerica.com/2025/04/chemically-imbalanced-joanna-moncrieff-making-unmaking-serotonin-myth/ Thank you for being with us to listen to the podcast and read our articles this year. Episode Highlights: Defining and Achieving Thriving, The Impact of Relationships on Followers and Clients, Finding a Reason and Lesson in Every Situation, Exploring Anxious and Avoidant Attachment Styles Summary: Welcome to this week's edition of The HOT Seat as Kaylor takes the hot seat with team member Jena Wiebe where they dive deep into the multifaceted world of mental health, personal growth, and relationships. Kaylor shares his compelling insights on the root causes of depression, examining whether it's merely a chemical imbalance or a consequence of lifestyle choices. The conversation takes an intriguing turn as Kaylor and Jena dissect the impact of relationships on mental health. Kaylor opens up about his personal evolution from a non-committal 'fuckboy' in his twenties to embracing intentional, committed relationships in his thirties. They unpack the complexities of anxious and avoidant attachment styles, shedding light on their roots in fear of abandonment and rejection. Kaylor's belief that everything happens for a reason is woven throughout the discussion, highlighting the importance of finding meaning and lessons in every experience. Takeaways: Thriving is defined differently by each individual, but it often involves waking up with excitement and being stoked to face the day Depression may not be solely caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, but can be influenced by diet, lifestyle, and mindset The healthcare system often focuses on prescribing medication for depression without considering other factors such as diet, relationships, and lifestyle Relationships should be based on genuine connection and shared values, rather than the fear of losing followers or clients The importance to distinguish between someone who is intentionally exploring and someone who is avoiding commitment Personal growth and self-awareness can lead to a shift from being a fuckboy to being more intentional and open to a committed relationship If you enjoyed the episode, please be sure to take a screenshot and share it out on Instagram and tag @thekaylorbetts. We take a look at two trials that give insight on why complexity is likely the name of the game and how causal attribution affects patient outcomes. References: Kemp, J. J., Lickel, J. “The dangers of medicalizing the human condition are nothing short of a silent epidemic in American society. This dangerous trend pathologizes the core of human experience, categorizing everyday emotions and responses to trauma and life's challenges as disorders. It's a slippery slope into psychiatric over-diagnosis, overmedication, and a lifetime of pharmaceutical dependency.” – Dr. Roger McFillin, Psy.D., ABPPThe notion that depression is the result of a “chemical imbalance” in the brain emerged, not coincidentally, in the late '80s with the introduction of Prozac—a drug that appeared to be helpful in treating depression by increasing levels of serotonin. Pushed heavily by Big Pharma as well as organizations including the American Psychiatric Association, this storyline has become the dominant narrative up until recently, in which an umbrella review (led by Joanna Moncrieff) concluded that, “The main areas of serotonin research provide no consistent evidence of there being an association between serotonin and depression, and no support for the hypothesis that depression is caused by lowered serotonin activity or concentrations.” Join me in this episode as Dr. Roger McFillin and I discuss topics including dispelling some of the myths around depression being a chemical imbalance, the over-use of prescription medications, and some of the issues today that are threatening to take away our medical freedom.Despite being formally trained in evidence-based treatments and achieving Board Certification in Behavioral & Cognitive Psychology from the American Board of Professional Psychologists, Dr. Roger McFillin has witnessed countless individuals deteriorate under these supposedly “best available evidence” recommendations. Many who turned to drugs and medical interventions to improve their mental health worsened dramatically. In an attempt to resolve the conflict between what he was seeing in clinical practice and what he was told to be safe and effective, Dr. McFillin immersed himself in scientific literature, delved into ancient philosophy, and scrutinized historical texts. His revelations were astounding. Much of the current scientific base that informs psychiatry and the mental health field is infected with corruption and bias. Dr. McFillin now shares his experience, and addresses the pervasive issues that threaten to take away our medical freedoms in his captivating Radically Genuine Podcast.Suggested Resources:DrMcFillin.comRadically Genuine Podcast | Instagram | TwitterHow To Raise a Healthy Child In Spite of Your DoctorDr. John Ioannidis PublicationsRisk of Suicidal Behaviors and Antidepressant Exposure Among Children and Adolescents: A Meta-Analysis of Observational StudiesThe Serotonin Theory of Depression: a Systematic Umbrella Review of the EvidenceRisk of Suicidal Behaviors and Antidepressant Exposure Among Children and ATo learn more about WellnStrong: Subscribe to my newsletter! Date of Lecture: Thursday 18 May 2023 About the lecture: This lecture will describe recent research that exposed the fact that there is no convincing evidence to support the claim that depression is caused by low serotonin. It will describe the author's previous work which challenges the general idea that the drugs prescribed for mental health problems work by targeting an underlying biological abnormality. It will present an alternative explanation for the action of these drugs that highlights how they are substances that change normal brain chemistry and thereby modify normal mental activity and behaviour. Finally it will consider what this means for the use of drugs such as antidepressants, and suggest that we need to fundamentally re-evaluate the pros and cons of using them. About the speaker: Joanna Moncrieff is a Professor of Critical and Social Psychiatry at University College London.

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Tina Cole, Singer, Actress & Author, “My Three Lives: A Memoir” About Harvey's guest: Today's special guest, Tina Cole, is a singer and actress who can truly be considered a member of show business royalty, for several reasons. First of all, she's the daughter of Yvonne King of the legendary King Sisters, who were hugely popular big-band singers, and the 1st female vocal group to sing in 4 part harmony. And her father was the iconic pianist, orchestra leader and musical director Buddy Cole, who worked with some of the greatest singers of all time and recorded the soundtracks of over 1,000 movies. Secondly, she's a member of America's First Family of Song - the legendary King Family, which entertained audiences throughout the 60s and 70s with their own TV series and 17 TV specials. And thirdly, she will forever be remembered as the beautiful, sweet-natured Katie Douglas, in one of the greatest TV sitcoms of all time: “My Three Sons”. When she joined the cast of that show in its 8th season as Robbie Douglas' fiancée, and then his wife, she became an international sensation, receiving more fan mail than any other actor in any of Don Fedderson's many TV productions. And she won Photoplay Magazine's People's Choice Award for the Most Promising Actress. And get this: the episode of “My Three Sons” where Katie Douglas gave birth to triplets, was the number one show in the Nielsen Ratings for that week. Our guest has been entertaining audiences since she was a toddler. In addition to performing on TV and on tour with The King Family, and as a member of the immensely popular “Four King Cousins”, and her iconic role on “My Three Sons”, she had a recurring role on “Hawaiian Eye” opposite Robert Conrad and Troy Donohue. She guest starred in TV shows including “The Lucy Show”, “To Rome With Love”, “Adam-12” and many more. And when you thought you were listening to Raquel Welch singing on her 1970 TV Special, you were actually hearing the voice of our guest! She's appeared in a number of theatrical productions including “I Do, I Do”, “The Boyfriend”, “Trail of Dreams”, and “Chemical Imbalance”, and for 10 years she played Ethel Mertz in an “I Love Lucy” tribute show. For her stellar performance in the 2014 movie, “See Me”, she won the Vanguard Award at the Sacramento Film Festival. And in 2014, she received the Golden Halo Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Motion Picture and Television Industry. AND NOW, she's released her long-awaited autobiography entitled, “My Three Lives: A Memoir”, which takes us on an engaging, nostalgic, heartfelt – and sometimes heartbreaking – but ALWAYS uplifting and inspirational, journey through her multi-faceted career, her personal relationships, and her enormously strong bond with her beautiful family. We have been systematically misinformed about what depression and anxiety are”. This is the main idea behind Johann Hari's bestselling book lost connections. I recently finished it, and even though I didn't completely agree with his conclusion, I thoroughly enjoyed his detailed, evidence-based tear-down of the overly-simplistic idea that "chemical imbalance causes depression". What if the causes of depression are much more complicated than we thought? What if it's not a chemical imbalance, but a combination of factors, especially what's going on around us? And inside us. For some people who have a limited understanding of the causes of depression, moving away from the simple chemical imbalance theory sounds like heresy, but before recording this video I shared the script with 3 professionals I trust, a Doctor, a psychiatric nurse practitioner, and a psychiatrist, and all three of them said “Isn't this basically the Bio-Psycho-Social Model?”. The bio-psycho-social model is a well understood and commonly accepted approach to mental health that conceptualizes the causes of mental illness as being an interplay of Biology, psychology (how you think) and society (your experiences, your environment). But I'm making this video because many members of the public have never heard of it. Looking for affordable online counseling? In this episode, my guest is Nolan Williams, M.D., a triple board-certified psychiatrist, neurologist and professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford School of Medicine. He is also the Director of the Stanford Brain Stimulation Lab. We discuss clinical applications for brain stimulation, behavioral protocols and novel drug treatments to halt and reverse mental health disorders, including depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We first discuss the neural circuits for self-identity and mood and stress control. We discuss Dr. Williams' work using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to depression, trauma, PTSD, and other mood disorders. We then dive deep into the history, biology, modern use, and safety margins of the various psychedelics, including MDMA, LSD, ketamine, ibogaine, ayahuasca, and psilocybin, as well as cannabis and the use of SSRIs in both adults and children. Finally, we discuss behavioral treatments for mental health disorders, including sleep and sleep deprivation, light exposure, exercise, and training to control the brain-heart-rate pathways. Regardless of age, all those interested in mental health should benefit from the incredible breadth and depth of Dr. Williams' knowledge and the clarity with which he conveys that information. Recently a study made the rounds that sought to cast doubt on the efficacy of antidepressants. At the core of this misleading study was a real truth – that depression isn't merely a question of "not enough serotonin." But what exactly does that mean? Is this a new discovery? And why doesn't that mean that medication focused on serotonin doesn't work? Explaining this brilliantly and with singular charm is Dr. Dean Burnett!
In this episode, we welcome back Dr. Michael Cummings to discuss a new study that explores the idea that depression may not be merely a chemical imbalance. It's our 200th episode—time to reflect on where we've been and where we're headed! My first thought is how grateful I am for the opportunity to share with you and our community. Your comments, emails, and dms mean everything to me. They let me know you resonate with Love & Life's mission: “Conversations grounded in psych research to help us thrive in love and life.” On Love & Life, we're all about the research–which is why we're so dismayed by the degeneration of science we've recently witnessed. In this episode, we discuss 3 cases of faulty science which have just come to light, starting with an umbrella study by Joanna Moncrieff and colleagues which finds no connection between depression and serotonin levels. Although many psychiatrists have doubted the “chemical imbalance” explanation of depression for years, pharmaceutical companies continue to promulgate this unsubstantiated theory because it has, obviously, greatly boosted sales of antidepressants. We examine two other instances of manipulated science including a shocking revelation that the last 16 years of Alzheimer's research has been based on falsified brain images. And, the third example surrounds the bizarre and utterly unscientific response to the COVID pandemic over the last 2 ½ years. We look to science to help us explore and uncover truth. When findings are misrepresented, it shakes our confidence, but it also reminds us we need to be discerning and savvy when consuming information—even information coming from sources we once believed we could trust. What does all this mean for Love & Life? Ultimately, it reinforces our commitment to pushing back against Big Pharma and its efforts to medicalize our every emotion! I'm so grateful for your support over these last 200 episodes. According to new research, the link between depression and “chemical imbalances” in the brain could be less settled than previously thought. A leading theory as psychiatrists Mark Horowitz and Joanna Moncrieff write, “Our study shows that this view is not supported by scientific evidence.” Related studies show, for example, that when people believe their depression is the result of mere brain chemistry, their self-confidence and ability to change plummet. Ironically, they also tend to feel more stigma, not less. Christians, of course, have nothing to fear from the insights of science. Findings like these matter. It confirms what a Christian worldview confirms: People are not merely their brains, nor are they at mercy of chemical forces. Thinking that everything about us is located in the brain is the inevitable conclusion of materialism, and an idea that has real consequences. Our brains are a big part of what we are, but they aren't all of who we are. A worldview limited only to material components is too small for reality. That's a conclusion that the science is beginning to support.
