Welcome to Episode 134 of the Think UDL podcast: Ask Me and Believe Me with Mickey Rowe. Mickey Rowe is an award winning best selling author and speaker. As an autistic and legally blind person, he believes that when we design for accessibility, we help others to perform at their best, and, as he says, that's not just for disabled folks. He is a Broadway actor, director, consultant and public speaker and was the first autistic actor to play Christopher Boone, the lead role in the Tony Award-winning play The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. He is a disability and accessibility advocate and his most recent speaking engagement is with TextHelp's open access conference Back to School Blockbuster: Lights, Camera, Educate! on September 18-19, from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm EST. This is a free virtual conference designed just for educators. If you are listening to this episode after the synchronous online conference, all of the content is available on demand until the end of November and you can find a link to the Back to School Blockbuster conference on the ThinkUDL.org webpage under the resources section of this episode, and in the episode description. In today's conversation with Mickey, we talk about his experiences as a disabled student at the university level and what he and his professors did to manage the barriers that persisted while he completed his undergraduate degree. Mickey gives us all, students, instructors, administrators, and everyone else, some sound advice on how to reduce the friction but not the rigor of a college education. There are some easy choices and forward thinking designs that can help all of us along the way. I was able to catch Mickey at 6:30am his time in Seattle, Washington, and by the end of our interview his young school-aged children had joined us in the recording and made a brief appearance. You'll hear them, too!

A self-described “data hippie,” Christopher Boone, vice president and global head of health economics and outcomes research at AbbVie, knows a great deal about using real-world data and generating real-world evidence in clinical trials. Boone sits with host Deborah Borfitz to talk about the disruptive presence of real-world evidence within the clinical trial enterprise and how it encourages researchers to reimagine trial design from start to finish. He says, “Much of the data we care about is captured outside the walls of the provider environment… Now, with all the digital technology, you can really understand the [patient's] environment and experience in real-time.” Boone assesses how effective the industry has been in democratizing data, how the 21st Century Cures Act was “probably the single biggest catalyst” in the expansion of real-world data, the industry's transition to patient-centered research, and the systemic and cultural barriers challenging clinical studies today. He also shares tidbits from his upcoming talk at SCOPE Summit 2023 in early February. Growing up as an autistic and legally blind person, actor Mickey Rowe was told that he couldn't be a part of the mainstream world. As Rowe navigated adulthood, he was ignored and misunderstood by classmates and colleagues, infantilized by theatre directors, and even barred from earning minimum wage, all because he is autistic. But for Rowe, the structure and repetition of theatre productions made sense — after all, he spent his entire life acting to pass as neurotypical. In 2017, Rowe became the first openly autistic actor ever to play any autistic role in a professional performance setting, taking on the lead role of Christopher Boone in the Tony Award-winning play, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Today, Rowe is a prolific performer and speaker, a husband and father, and the author of Fearlessly Different: An Autistic Actor's Journey to Broadway's Biggest Stage. Together at Town Hall with writer Laurie Frankel, Rowe discussed his new book and how the things that make us different can turn out to be our biggest strengths. This event provided CART transcription and ASL interpretation. Mickey Rowe (he/him) has had a prolific and varied career as an actor, director, consultant, and public speaker, and is highly sought-after nationally and internationally. He was the first autistic actor to play Christopher Boone, the lead role in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. This also made him the first openly autistic actor ever to play any autistic role in a professional performance setting. He has also appeared in the title role in Amadeus and more. Rowe has been featured in The New York Times, New York Times Magazine, PBS, Vogue, Playbill, NPR, CNN, The Wall Street Journal, HuffPost, and Forbes. He has keynoted at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, The Kennedy Center, Yale University, Columbia University, and others. Mickey was the founding Artistic Director of National Disability Theatre, which works in partnership with Tony Award-winning companies such as La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego and the Goodman Theatre in Chicago. Laurie Frankel is the New York Times bestselling, award-winning author of four novels, including her most recent One Two Three and This Is How It Always Is. Her writing has also appeared in The New York Times, The Guardian, Publisher's Weekly, People Magazine, Lit Hub, The Sydney Morning Herald, and other publications. She is the recipient of the Washington State Book Award and the Endeavor Award. Her novels have been translated into more than twenty-five languages and have been optioned for film and TV. A former college professor, she now writes full-time in Seattle, Washington where she lives with her family and makes good soup. Just ahead of Autism Awareness Month, Dr. Dan welcomes Mickey Rowe – actor, husband, father, author, and activist. Legally blind and autistic, Mickey Rowe is the first autistic actor to play Christopher Boone, the lead role in the Tony Award-winning play The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Mickey's mantra is powerful: our differences are our strengths. In his new memoir, FEARLESSLY DIFFERENT: An Autistic Actor's Journey to Broadway's Biggest Stage, Mickey recasts the definition of abled body and mind. As the father of an autistic child, Mickey has a deep commitment to activism and his desire to create a better world. Today's discussion about the wider disability community, ableism, and systemic oppression is essential listening for everyone who wants to make the world a more accepting place. Hailed as a trailblazer and inspiration, Mickey is the founding artistic director of the prestigious National Disability Theatre. He has been featured in the New York Times, PBS, Vogue, Playbill, NPR, CNN, Wall Street Journal, HuffPost, Forbes, and has keynoted at organizations including the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, The Kennedy Center, Yale University, Columbia University, Disability Rights Washington, The Gershwin Theatre on Broadway, the DAC of the South Korean government, and more. Mickey Rowe has made a career out of one simple motto: The world needs what makes you different. An autistic actor who started out as a street performer in Seattle but was never given speaking roles in the theater during his 20s, Rowe eventually earned the lead role in the theater adaptation of the Tony Award-winning play The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. In the process Rowe became the first autistic actor to play the demanding lead role of Christopher Boone, a teenager on the spectrum who is convinced he can solve the murder of his neighbor's dog. On this episode of Paternal, Rowe reflects on his life on the autistic spectrum and what role autism played in his drive to become an actor, as well as the complicated relationship Hollywood has with portraying characters who are disabled. He also discusses what fatherhood looks like as an autistic father of an autistic son, and how he's learned to cast aside expectations about parenthood and embrace why his experience as a father is different from so many other men. Rowe is the founding Artistic Director of National Disability Theatre and his memoir, Fearlessly Different, will be released in March.

This week we are focusing on record collecting, something all three of our hosts engage in to varying degrees. We lead with a chat about our listening outside of hip-hop and the hoopla surrounding year-end lists. Then we speak with DJ, producer, musician, and record collector DJ Day. Day gets very candid about his life, his recording career, and his position as the best DJ in his hometown of Palm Springs, In the middle segment we talk about how the pandemic has affected record stores and our own digging habits. Our second interview is with documentarians Kevin Smokler and Christopher Boone, co-directors of the new documentary Vinyl Nation. The film features interviews with friends of the program Oliver Wang and Morgan Rhodes among others, and was partly filmed at our hometown record shop Needle To The Groove Records in San Jose, California. Beats this week were provided by DJ Day, including a never-heard-before remix. DBRP is a proud part of the Stony Island Audio podcast network.

The disco funk group B.T. Express hit the ground running with their debut studio album Do It ('Til You're Satisfied), which reached the top spot in the US R&B albums chart and went gold. The title track went on to become a staple in club playlists and the band started work on their next project. Just a year later, their sophomore album Non-Stop was released and it once again reached the top of the R&B chart, but did not enjoy the same amount of commercial success. Nonetheless, the album's funky vibes and distinct sound stood out, and it's kept us grooving ever since.Oliver is flying solo with Kevin Smokler and Christopher Boone, the filmmakers behind the documentary, Vinyl Nation. Kevin Smokler and Christopher Boone have spent the week talking about the documentary that they made. But what about the documentary that they are in? VINYL NATION is an intimate look at record collecting and, since they're both fans, they can't avoid impacting the narrative. It's the anatomy of a scene that cracks the fourth wall as they prod the intention between art and its artist. For full show notes visit www.nahpods.com. This podcast is powered by Pinecast.
We all know that archetype of the elite record snob. And we could even swap out the word "record" for "comic book," "film" or pretty much any pop culture affliction. But is there actually truth to that exaggerated cliché? Filmmakers Kevin Smokler and Christopher Boone relate quite the opposite as they continue their discussion of their record fan documentary VINYL NATION. For full show notes visit www.nahpods.com. This podcast is powered by Pinecast.
With their rare releases, glorious gatefolds and sound that "just sounds better," records are a go-to metaphor for pop culture collecting. But the actual collectors are not as simple to pin down. In VINYL NATION, Christopher Boone and Kevin Smokler get people talking on their varied connections with this very medium. And, all week, they are here to discuss what inspired the documentary as well as what they found in making it. Its a three part, three way podcast spectacular (who's show notes might have benefitted from a little re-writing). For full show notes visit www.nahpods.com. This podcast is powered by Pinecast.
The resurgence of the vinyl record is undeniable, and more than a few years into a comeback vinyl and vinyl collectors seem to be everywhere. But why? What is it about this nearly one-hundred-year-old medium that has sucked everyone in and eventually lead to it outselling CDs? In this episode, we had the pleasure of digging in the crates and catching up with Kevin Smokler and Christopher Boone, director/producers of the brand new (and fantastically done) documentary VINYL NATION—where we got to talk with them about all things vinyl. The film gives you a first-hand look into the comeback of the record. A little bit of history, more than a few stories, and the search for the truths of those finding themselves immersed in a world where they have much more in common than they might have once thought. "I think that the problem that we have is we're still in a society where there's fear of the unknown and I also think that in some cases the system is set up to benefit folks from having a level of fragmentation even lack of data quality." We have had some lovely activities in this relatively short half term. There was some fantastic sporting success, including a bronze in the U10 Boys’ Football ACSIS finals, a gold in the U14 Boys’ Football and a gold in the U14 Girls’ Netball finals. Amazing results! We held our Year 3 and Year 4 swimming galas which were both hotly contested. Congratulations to Ubin for winning the Year 3 inter-house competition and to Jurong for winning the Year 4 competition. We had some lovely celebrations for Chinese New Year, including our second temple fair, arranged by the DCIS Mandarin department. It was lovely to see our children, all wearing festive clothes, enjoy the traditional activities run by our staff and parent volunteers. The campus looked beautiful, thank you DCA for decorating our school. The DCA also ran the Secondary disco, which was enjoyed by all who attended. As always, we are very grateful for the support of our parent community through the DCA. Our students in the exam years; Years 11 and 13 have successfully completed their mocks and are studying hard for their final exams later this year. A highlight of the IB journey, at least from a teacher’s perspective, is the presentation of the Extended Essays. Our Year 13 cohort shared their work with their peers, teachers and parents during a lovely CoffEE event. There was an amazing spread of topics, from The Fall of Singapore, to Exploring the Mind of Christopher Boone and Rap Music and its Evolution Through Time. The first House Day of this term was a great success. The Primary students had a fun filled day of dancing, whilst the Secondary students had a more reflective day, focusing on the theme Enquiry. We have seen numerous charity initiatives this half term, starting with the big fund raiser for those affected by the Australian bushfires and Indonesian flooding in the first week of term. This was followed by the Year 2 Charity Shops, where the children in Year 2 were selling baked goods and used toys and books to support the Red Cross’ work in Australia and Indonesia. 8MM and 11ML organised a Valentine Day’s Bake Sale, also raising money for the Red Cross and their work. I am very grateful to the Dover Court community for your generosity and willingness to help those in need. The Secondary lunchtime performances ‘On the Spot’ have been a great success this year, we have some incredibly talented students in our school. This has also been seen in the newly introduced Primary version – ‘At the Splat’, where Kai and Haley have set the bar high, with two wonderful performances. The Secondary students travelling to Tanzania to do service work, as part of the Global Campus, have been raising money for their trip through various initiatives. Inspired by the ‘On the Spot’ performances the students ran a charity vote, where teachers with the most votes were invited to participate in a karaoke style show in the Red Dot. Mr Bull, Mrs Hyland, Mr Mainstone, Mr Jury and Mr Lindsay did a much appreciated performance, singing ‘Into the Unknown’ from Frozen and the Backstreet Boys classic, ‘I Want It That Way’. Seldom have we seen such a supportive and enthusiastic audience! This past week we welcomed Abie Longstaff to the school to talk about her life as an author. Abie ran some fantastic workshops with the children in our Primary school, inspiring them all to become writers. Do listen to the interview with her in our podcast! As we had to rearrange a few things due to the current situation, I was honoured to be chosen to stand in as the Mystery Reader to read to one of our Reception classes. It was wonderful to see the excitement as the children discovered that Mr Shorts was joining them.

Simon nominates Boo Radley as the most enduring character from To Kill A Mockingbird, which inevitably leads to a discussion around Go Set A Watchman, a book neither of them has actually read. Darren's enduring characters are Death from Markus Zusak's The Book Thief and Christopher Boone from Mark Haddon's The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, which leads to a discussion of 'otherness' in characterisation and the importance of empathy. And, of course, if you're interested you can watch the two talking heads to accompany the audio, if that's your thing.
