Episode 376: HICKIES + DRYHUMPS "The SoCal Party That Became a Filipino Movement" Feat. Esentrik This episode of Road Podcast features @JulzDelaPena and @Esentrik breaking down how real DJ careers evolve, from Julz getting into weddings and understanding presentation (02:05). The conversation touches on the reality of DJ promo culture, online bravado, and mentorship (07:03). The crew then speaks on DJ friendships, leaving retail to focus on parties, and changing economics (10:10). Julz revisits the roots of @HickiesAndDryhumps, why the party originally felt like a house party, and how moments like @MilesMedina and @JustBlaze pulling up after the Goldie Awards shaped its growth (25:07), before diving into Filipino classics and the quiet influence of Filipino DJs in nightlife (29:01). The crew then talks about San Diego's venues, DJ unity, and why the city's crowds feel more receptive and fun than Hollywood (47:59). Esentrik explains his showcase style of DJing and crowd reading (57:01). The episode closes with viral Seafood City DJ pop-ups (1:15:01), shrinking DJ rates, and promotion strategies (1:25:01). It … is happening … again! This week, Producer Mike rings in 2026 with NorCal producer DJ Shadow's 1996 masterpiece Endtroducing….., whose release was a watershed moment for the art of instrumental hip-hop. It's in the Guinness Book of World Records as the first album to be composed entirely out of sampled sounds, but focusing on the technical achievement seriously undersells the depths of Shadow's artistry. This is lively, organic music, with compositions that feel like sculptures crafted from the clay of music history, and the entire 21st-century DJing movement stands on the foundation of what Shadow accomplished here. Mike himself is a composer of sample-based music (including our awesome theme song) and a long-time admirer of Shadow's work, and he's invited Rich and returning special guest Shivam Bhatt to deconstruct an album that builds a mighty head of steam out of a grain of salt.Cohosts: Mike DeFabio, Rich Bunnell, Shivam BhattComplete show notes: https://discordpod.com/listen/170-dj-shadow-endtroducing-1996Discord & Rhyme's merch store: http://tee.pub/lic/discordpodSupport the podcast! https://www.patreon.com/discordpod

In this nuanced conversation, Jonathan Schecter speaks with Matt Xavier a DJ, therapist, and author. They explore the deep connections between rave culture, DJing, and psychedelic therapy, as well as Matt's book The Psychedelic Dj: A Practical Guide to Therapeutic Music Curation and Psilocybin-Assisted Therapy.Matt unfolds his journey — from decades as a DJ, to becoming a counselor, to writing his book on therapeutic music curation and DJing for psychedelic sessions. Together they talk about what makes DJing an art, how music informs set and setting, and why understanding sound is critical in expanded states of consciousness.Matt demystifies how he curates music for sessions, how he attunes to clients, and why lower doses and attunement often unlock deeper therapeutic insights than chasing peak experiences alone. They also talk about facilitator self‑care, ethics, and how music doesn't just fill the room — it is part of the setting. This is for meditators, facilitators, therapists, seekers, and anyone who believes music can do more than entertain.Listen to learn:• How Matt translates dancefloor instinct into session support• Why attunement matters more than playlists alone• How dosage decisions shape the potential for presence• What it takes to be a trauma‑informed facilitator• Music protocols that honor shadow, insight, and integrationFollow Matt: integrativepsychedelics.com | @MattXavierJoin Blue Magic Alchemy on Skool: https://www.skool.com/bluemagicalchemy

This week Line Noise gives you two French house legends for the price of one: Busy P and DJ Falcon. Busy P is Pedro Winter, producer, DJ, founder of Ed Banger records and - yes - once manager of Daft Punk, the lynchpin of Parisian dance. Stéphane Quême is DJ Falcon, whose very first productions became the brilliant Hello My Name Is DJ Falcon EP back in 1999; he later formed half of Together with Daft Punk's Thomas Bangalter and is currently working with Alan Braxe. Ben Cardew spoke to them at the Nitsa club in Barcelona ahead of their DJ gig about their relationship, DJing back to back, Falcon's first productions, the birth of Ed Banger and so much more, including Pedro Winter giving the full background story to that night on October 25 at the Centre Pompidou when Thomas Bangalter returned to DJing alongside Fred Again and Busy P. Line Noise comes to you with the support of Cupra. Picture by @redporteros

We are talking about DJs for your Wedding and Reception. What is the best advice for couples getting ready for their wedding and their reception? How should couples approach their conversations with the DJ? What makes good song choices or playlists? We talk about first dances, father-daughter dances, mother-son dances, anniversary dances, cutting-the-cake songs, and slow songs vs. fast songs. And what are the things that couples don't think about? My guest on today's episode is Mike Lazar, a professional DJ, MC, and music director whose journey in music began at the age of twelve, playing drums in church. From there, Mike expanded into guitar, singing, and eventually DJing, launching his own company, Lazar Productions, at just twenty years old. Over time, his work led him into the world of live performance and music production, including opportunities to collaborate with top artists and Grammy- and Emmy-award-winning producers across the country. Today, Mike serves as the Music Director at First Baptist Church of Massillon, works with Rock the House Entertainment, and continues to run his own promotion work part-time. In this conversation, we discuss creativity, calling, and stewarding talent well in both sacred and professional spaces. Whether you are a creative, a leader, or someone navigating multiple vocational lanes, Mike brings thoughtful insight and real-world experience to the table. You can find links to Mike's work and the organizations we discuss below. Journey from Montreal to various raves on the African continent with San Farafina and Hervé from Montréal's post-border interdiscipinary collective Moonshine. We explore their journey from throwing full-moon house parties in 2014 to linking up with the African diaspora around the globe, along the way building a brand, creative hub, and party institution. We hear about what's going on in Kinshasa, Abidjan, Dar es Salaam, Lisbon and beyond and learn how not even electricity cuts, high tides, police and giant insects can keep them from a party. We also discuss their relationship to Vanyfox (our guest on episode #39), the evolution of batida, the changing landscape of DJing worldwide and our run-ins with Game of Thrones characters at the rave. Hosted by Vivian Host (aka DJ Star Eyes). For more info and extras, visit Ravetothegrave.org or Instagram @ravetothe.grave.
