We woke up and realized that it's been quite a while since we last made a show. So, let's get right to it since I'm also terribly late getting this one posted! Kicking things off, a quick reminder is that there is a new episode of available to download. Once we get started, the title of the show pretty much describes what we were seeing at Motoringfile when we recorded. Needless to say, we are talking a lot about electric MINIs this episode. And nerd website stuff. And, Go Motoring (#IYKYK). This is to serve as your reminder that is your best source for MINI news. Gabe is the only one out there, really, that has the inside track. Trust me. Add in the MINI boobs and some chatGPT and we have ourselves a show! Finally, don't forget the OG sponsors of White Roof Radio and Motoringfile: , , and .

BMW Group South Africa (BMW SA) will launch South Africa’s fourth electric vehicle (EV) in the fourth quarter of this year, when the Mini SE will make its local debut. The Mini SE follows the new style of EVs, where a known model is turned into an electric car, and the vehicle is not manufactured on a purpose-built EV platform, such as the Nissan Leaf or BMW i3. BMW SA says the Mini SE will be the most affordable battery electric vehicle (BEV) in the local market, with pricing starting at R642000, moving up to R722000 for the top spec model. It looks like a Mini, feels like a Mini, and has retained the classic cool of the British brand, with all the features one would find in the internal combustion engine Mini. Range is 217 km, depending on driving style. Drivers can opt for a Green + mode, where range is preserved, or move up to Sports mode, where the car aims to spend its 270 Nm of torque far more eagerly. BMW SA says it will retain the BMW i3 in the local market, with this model more suited for family mobility. The Mini SE forms part of an extensive rollout of BMW electrified vehicles (EVs), which include plug-in-hybrid vehicles (PEVs), hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicles (HCEVs) and BEVs. BMW is targeting an average growth rate of 30% a year in global EV sales, which should lead to one-million EVs on the road by 2021, and 15% to 25% of total sales by 2025. The German car maker says it will have 25 EV models on the road by 2023, with more than half of these BEVs. In Europe, more than half of total sales will be EVs by 2030. BMW PHEVs and BEVs are currently on sale in 74 countries worldwide. The group says it is “on eye-level” with Volkswagen and Tesla in terms of EV sales in the European Union, at around a 10% share. Globally, the group will launch 12 BEVs and 13 PHEVs until 2023. South Africa will not receive all of these, with the most likely next BEV to make its way here the BMW iX3 sports-activity vehicle. The BMW group is already developing the fifth generation of its electric drive train for release in 2021, where the electric motor does not require any rare earths. Taking the technology currently in the BMW i3 as basis, BMW believes it will be able to double the energy density of its battery cells and, therefore, also the operating range of its BEVs. The group has also taken control of its raw material supply, signing a 540-million Euro supply contract with Ganfeng for sustainable lithium from mines in Australia, and a 100-million Euro contract with the Managem Group for cobalt from Morocco.

Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Thursday 12th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. MINI ELECTRIC LOOKS ALMOST READY Let's talk about the BMW Mini! I had a petrol one for a year in 2008, black, petrol bags of fun even not the Cooper variant. Around that time before I was interested in EVs there was the original Mini E, it was a pilot program and is now discontinued. I'd have another Mini tomorrow as they're great for British roads, small enough to park and big enough for long journeys. So fast forward 10 years and I'm excited about the Mini EV. Carscoops says: "Our sneaky shutterbugs have caught the prototype (both inside and out) undergoing testing out in the wild. The prototype was also spied plugged in to the mains in a dedicated EV charging/parking spot. And the grille is all covered up, suggesting that there’s no internal-combustion engine inside. So unlike the Countryman PHEV, this prototype clearly isn’t a hybrid." Carscoops has 14 pics of the mini in yellow swirly camoflouage and I'll put a link in the show notes so you can see, but they do have just one of the inside. The dash has black cloth covering it, another sign they're getting close. There are three extra screens of test equipment, one that looks like a computer monitor on a large box on the passenger seat with two smaller screens about the size of an iPad mini stuck to the dash. In the footwells of the passenger side are a mass of wires. And how about this, you know on a bus or coach or train, you see those metal hammers often behind glass, with a sign which says "in case of emergency, break glass and smash window to escape"? I can just see one of those taped to the drivers door next to the handle...so are the windows either locked up or are the electric windows disabled? Either way I think it's a sign they're getting closer to production. Meanwhile, India Times reports: "BMW Group and the biggest Chinese SUV brand, Great Wall Motor, announced a partnership Tuesday to produce electric MINI vehicles in China as global automakers ramp up development under pressure from Beijing." Auto brands in China are required to make electric vehicles at least 10 percent of their sales starting next year or buy credits from competitors that exceed their quotas. Later, they face pressure to raise those sales in order to satisfy fuel efficiency requirements that increase annually. The last I heard, Western markets will have the Mini EV made here in the UK in Oxford but given the disastrous process of Brexit and trying to untangle British manufacturing from a tariff free customs union, we're really worried that car markers will find it both easier and cheaper to move production to the European Union. Leaving the EU is currently looking very bad for the auto industry in particular. https://www.carscoops.com/2018/07/mini-electric-looks-almost-ready-plug-ev-market/#lg=1&slide=13 TESLA Q2 VOLUMES ALMOST EQUAL TO JAGUAR The market intelligence company AID has been tracking Tesla sales vs Jaguar: "Tesla is already snapping at the heels of Jaguar. The question now is, as AIDs segment observers have put it most topically, based on Teslas latest sales surge it is not if Tesla will outsell Jaguar on the global prestige sector sales scene, but how soon?" They say:" Figures compiled by AID every month reveal that this second quarter, thanks in large measure to the long-expected but belated sales bounce from Teslas all-new Model 3 in its domestic US backyard, worldwide sales of Tesla skyrocketed to 40,740 units, according to Tesla. In a world were almost everything is relative, that directly compares to the only slightly higher 44,124 worldwide Jaguar sales during the same second quarter." So as I saw on Kyle Field from Clean Technica say today on Twitter, lazy headline writers might have to stop using the phrase Tesla Killer, maybe they need to start calling Elon Musk #JaguarKiller The thing I would like to add is the unknown of the I-PACE sales which Q3 will include. http://www.eagleaid.com/AID-Newsletter-preorder-1813preview-d-Tesla-already-hot-on-Jaguars-heels.htm MUSK GOES TO CHINA, BUT IT IS TOO LATE FOR TESLA I know I'm a simpleton who thinks out loud on a wildly unpopular podcast, but I do get confused. Jim Collins at Forbes seems to think Tesla has missed the boat to sell cars in China. Jim says "It Is Too Late For Tesla To Ride The Chinese EV Boom". Let see what Jim says in this Forbes article: "Tesla's huge head start in the Western markets for high-end BEVs simply does not exist in China. As evidenced by the rash of senior executive departures in recent months, Elon Musk seems to like to do things on his own. But the Chinese market, which has flourished through so many East-West partnerships, is a very different animal, and Tesla simply does not have the capital to compete there." He seems to conclude that because they're dominant in the U.S. they should be dominant in China. I don't think I've ever heard Elon or Tesla say that. Just that they need to build a Gigafactory on every continent in order to make the kind of cars, at the kind of prices, which local people desire and can afford. It's weird, the headline bears little relevance to the article. Has Tesla missed the boat as they say? New Energy Vehicle sales are on target to double, it's a market in massive growth. Unlike in the U.S. where they literally had to CREATE a market for cars, there's an exploding one in China, so that head start which apparently they can't be successful without contradicts the facts that when Tesla launch there wasn't even a race. Let alone a head start. How is it "too late" for Tesla? https://www.forbes.com/sites/jimcollins/2018/07/11/mr-musk-goes-to-china-but-it-is-far-too-late-for-tesla-to-ride-the-chinese-ev-boom/#4fdbaab57a01 ELECTRIC CARS ARE THE FUTURE. HERE'S WHY YOU SHOULD BE AN EARLY ADOPTER Huffington Post say you should be an early adopter, and not just of cars. But of electric bikes too. "Another reason to get on the EV hype early? The chance to try a whole other way of transport. Step up: electric motorbikes. Richard Jordan, director of Super Soco, supplies 22 motorcycle dealers with his brand, which has been dubbed the ’Tesla of motorbikes.′ “Our bikes are legally the same as a 50cc motorbike, so they’re light, nimble and nippy through traffic – the ideal commuting machine. Cost per mile is tiny – around 1p – so commuting into London costs under 10p, compared with a travelcard cost of around £7 per day [based on a weekly card]. The battery is removable, so can be charged from the wall at work, or at home.” https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/electric-cars-are-the-future-heres-why-you-should-be-an-early-adopter_uk_5b337308e4b0cb56051dca58 TESLA HAS 100 MODEL 3 PERFORMANCE CARS FOR TEST DRIVES Elon Musk has tweeted about the Model 3s available for test drives: "Should be very soon. We’ve already made around 100 Model 3 Performance cars for test drives in stores." On last week’s edition of Ride The Lightning with Ryan McCaffrey he was speculating if they would rather you took a base model or Performance model for a test, which would be best for customers, so he tweeted Elon and that was the response. Looks like they've gone down the avenue of letting people rive the P3D and hoping, if they’d planned on a base model, to up sell them. That makes sense, basic business practice is to try and add value to a customer for a price. All that Anti-selling looks over, remember when Elon would tweet Model 3 reservation holders and say they should be buying a Model S?! By the way I've been playing too much with the configurator now it's opened up to everyone - i'm thinking white multi-coat paint with white interior is mine. TESLA REGISTERS MORE THAN 6,000 NEW MODEL 3 DUAL MOTOR AWD VINS Simon Alvarez at Teslarati, who incidentally got a retweet from Elon recently, has been tracking VIN numbers too by keeping an eye on the Twitter use @Model3VINs: "Tesla has registered a large batch of 6,032 new Model 3 VINs recently, with almost all of them corresponding to the Dual Motor AWD variant of the compact electric car. The new vehicle identification filings come at a time when Tesla is actively pushing its deliveries for the Model 3. This recent filing stands as yet another sign that Tesla is well on its way to sustaining its production rate of 5,000 Model 3 per week this third quarter" TESLA PICKUP TIMES ARE THE BOTTLENECK With so many people to get a Model 3 out to, Fred at Electrek has obtained an email to customers where Tesla are moving from making handover a one-hour hoopla, where your car is uncovered from a silk cloth draped over it, to a 5 minute quickie. The email says: "Learn about your Model 3: You’ll be driving home in as little as 5 minutes from your arrival, so please review the following resources below before your appointment until you are confident and ready to drive off: Watch Model 3 Tutorial Videos Review Model 3 Owner’s Manual Visit your local Tesla Showroom for any additional questions Sign & Drive Pickup Appointment Check In Paperwork Signing 5 minute Vehicle Handoff in which we will show you the essentials to enjoy your drive home: Charging Bundle Key Access Vehicle Start/Stop Park/Reverse/Neutral/Drive Tesla has produced 9 short videos to show different features of the Model 3 in preparation for this program." This was inevitable in some way you can't spend an hour making a song & dance over every buyers. Not when you have 5,000 cars to hand over, and 5,000 next week, and 5,000 the week after! You get my drift. I imagine the Model S and Model X buyers still get a more premium treatment. Thursday 29th March 2018. TESLA After a stock rout on Tuesday, another day today when Tesla lost over 7% of its value. Of course none of this makes any difference to the products it makes or how much people love the brand. No doubt it will bounce back, and as I’ve said before this isn’t a financial podcast, but the bigger picture is how the mainstream media will start to prophesize the end of electric cars. THE ELECTRIC MINI REVEALED A YEAR EARLY At the New York International Auto Show yesterday we saw an Electric Mini a year before we were meant to, but this was a Mini Cooper from the 1960s which has been converted to electric with a single motor. Would you like one? Yeah, me too. But you can’t buy it. It’s a one-off model. And a clever way to get us talking about electric minis without showing off the real thing yet. The 1960’s classic mini shape is known around the world and wouldn’t it be amazing if they just made a handful of them for sale. A bit like the recently Fully Charged video with Johnny Smith which featured a converted Jaguar E-Type. Back to the Mini Electric proper, that will arrive in 2019 for the 60th Anniversary of Mini. Of course for now we have to make do with the PHEV Mini Countryman, or the i3 which I’ve heard will be a donor for drivetrain bits. VW ATLAS PLUG IN CONCEPT Also at the New York International Auto Show, VW showed off a plug in version of their Atlas Cross Sport. Technically at this stage a concept BUT close to production. The ICE is coupled with motors on the front and rear axles, and a respectable 18kWh battery. That’s good for 26 miles / 42kms on pure electric. Production is slated for next year in Tennessee. EVS NOW EQUIVALENT OF 80MPG A recent analysis showed that EV drivers save 2.3 times as much as those driving ICE cars, and now engineers at the Union of Concerned Scientists has more good news. An EV now gets has the equivalent emissions of a gas car that gets 80 miles to the gallon, and if you can find one of those, then good luck. Fast Company says: “In the Pacific Northwest, where most power comes from hydro, EVs get the equivalent of 96 MPGs. In California, which has plenty of solar, the equivalent is 109 MPG.” Engineer David Reichmuth said: “It’s difficult to make burning gasoline cleaner, and electricity is trending cleaner over time as we shift away from coal and add more renewables. This means that EVs that were sold years ago can run much cleaner than when they were purchased,” NATIONAL GRID SUPPORTS 2030 ICE BAN Graeme Cooper is the UK National Grid’s electric car grand poobah, and he told the government yesterday that if we moved the 2040 ICE ban forward to 2030, the grid could cope. Yes you can still make a coffee and charge your car! He said: “A deadline of 2030 would still give us enough time to cope with any changes that need to be made. We would support a more ambitious target. It provides a clear focus and allows the networks industry to respond appropriately. Even if you left the 2040 target in place, I think the number of people still buying a conventional petrol or diesel car before that deadline will be a short list. “It’s important on a world stage that the UK matches our neighbours. Norway is the most ambitious with a target of 2025.” NISSAN LEAF WINS “2018 WORLD GREEN CAR” Another story from the Auto Show currently in NYC, and Eric at InsideEVs reports that a pure BEV has won the “World Green Car” award for the first time. He writes: “The three finalists for the award were: BMW 530e iPerformance vs Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid vs Nissan LEAF. Upon receiving the award, Nissan’s Daniele Schillaci, Executive Vice President, Global Marketing and Sales, Zero Emission Vehicle and Battery Business, said: “We’re very proud that since Nissan LEAF launched in 2010, we’ve been able to put more than 300,000 zero-emission electric vehicles on the road worldwide, helping to reduce carbon footprints around the globe. We’re honored to be recognized by this esteemed jury and proud to continue to expand the vision of Nissan Intelligent Mobility.” TWO NEW MECHANIC TRAINING SCHEMES Long time podcast listeners know I’m worried about the huge industry of mechanics, both working for large dealers and local one-man-band independents. Not only will EVs require fewer visits to the car hospital, but they need retraining urgently. Firstly today Tesla started a new training programme called ‘Tesla Start’. Graduates should get a job with Tesla within 30 days of a graduation but will have to relocate. It’s a 12-week course in North Carolina or California. And in the UK today Allianz Worldwide Partners has teamed up with the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) to create a new electric, hybrid and PHEV vehicle training programme for roadside recovery. Skill requirements include identifying AC and DC voltages, as well as high voltage symbols, cabling and components, during maintenance and repair. PORSCHE MISSION E SPIED TESTING Teslarati have a video worth checking out of the Porsche Mission E at the infamous Nurburgring circuit. They say: “Porsche recently took its Mission E prototype to the Nurburgring in Germany, where it was spotted speeding through one of the tracks’ iconic turns. As could be seen in a brief clip featuring the upcoming all-electric high-performance sedan, the Mission E was able to go through the exit of Brunnchen in classic, aggressive Porsche fashion. VW TO SELL TWO EV MODELS BY DEC 2019 California already has the e-golf on sale but, one of the conditions of the settlement has been noted by Green Car Reports, and that’s by the end of 2019 VW has to have two more pure BEVs on sale in the state. We know the VW I.D. is coming, if it looks like and Golf and quacks like a Golf, it’s probably a Golf by another name. For clarity, it’s the I.D. and not a Golf replacement. But that might not be on sale in North America in time. So you’re looking at the Audi e-tron Quattro SUV to fill one gap, and the other the Porsche Mission E. WIRELESS CHARGING HITS THE ROAD Finally we’ve had some hard news, now for the speculations. And would you look at the time, it must be time for another story about wireless charging. Because they come around like clockwork. The University Of Colorado in Boulder have made progress with charging whilst on the move. Professor Afridi explained: “On a highway, you could have one lane dedicated to charging,” adding that a vehicle could simply travel in that lane when it needed an energy boost and could carry a smaller onboard battery as a result, reducing the overall cost of the vehicle.
