Mini's latest battery-electric Cooper launched a handful of years ago as the Mini Electric. Though, you might know it better as the Mini Cooper SE if you live outside of the UK. This Mini Cooper SE takes the basic bones of the most recent Cooper Hardtop and stuffs a 32.64 kWh capacity battery under the floor and a single, 181 hp electric motor to power the front wheels. The interior, too, sticks with the broad strokes of Mini's design ethos and features a large circle in the middle of the dashboard that echoes Mini design of yesteryear but is home to a touchscreen infotainment system. On this episode of Quick Spin, Autoweek's executive editor Tom Murphy hops behind the wheel of the 2023 Mini Cooper SE and puts it through its paces. Murphy takes you on a guided tour of the Cooper SE and highlights some design elements. Later, Murphy takes you along for a live drive review. Adding to the discussion, Murphy chats with host Wesley Wren. Murphy and Wren chat about what sets this Mini's features, if it still has the Mini's spirit, and how Mini is doing against the competition. Closing the show, the pair break down what makes this Mini Cooper SE special.
On this week's Motor1.com Test Car Happy Hour, Editor-in-Chief Seyth Miersma, Managing Editor Brandon Turkus, and Senior Editors Brett Evans and Jeff Perez discuss the BMW XM, Audi RS6 Avant Performance, Mini Cooper SE, and Mercedes EQB250 SUV.
BMW SALES OF FULL BATTERY ELECTRIC CARS NEARLY TREBLE IN FIRST HALF - BMW has reported a near trebling of sales of full battery electric cars in the first half of the calendar year, and overall sales of EVs, including plug in hybrids, more than double over the same period. - BMW chairman Oliver Zipse said. “In the first half of the year our sales grew by almost 150 percent. In our domestic market of Germany, nearly one in four BMWs and around 30 percent of Mini sold already have an electric drive train.” The number of fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles BMW delivered in the first half jumped by 148.6% to 153,243 units in the first half, while deliveries of all-electric models jumped by 183.9% to 36,087 units. - “By the end of the year, we aim to have a total of one million fully-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles on the roads and, by 2025, two million pure electric vehicles,” Zipse said. “By then, we aim to deliver ten times the number of BEVs we sold in 2020.” - The all-electric BMW iX has been rolling off the production line at our plant in Dingolfing since July. This will be followed in the autumn by the all-electric BMW i4 from our main plant in Munich. This battery is lower in price than a lithium-ion battery as it uses less expensive raw materials. CATL's sodium-ion battery has an energy density of 160 Wh per kilogram and it can be charged by 80 percent in 15 minutes. - Panasonic recently announced that it would more than halve the price of its battery. “We will halve the production cost by next year and by up to 70 percent by 2025,” it said. According to industry sources, the current manufacturing cost of electric vehicle battery packs is about US$100 per Wh and Panasonic's goal is US$50 or less. - At present, South Korean electric vehicle battery manufacturers are trying to lower the prices of their products by reducing the content of cobalt in their relatively expensive high-nickel lithium-ion batteries. LG Energy Solution is planning to initiate the mass production of cobalt-reduced and aluminum-added NCMA batteries in the second half of this year. Other state or regional incentives might make the Leaf even more affordable. - he Leaf is shaping up to be the most affordable new electric vehicle in the U.S. market for the 2022 model year—undercutting the Mini Cooper SE, which had been the low-price EV leader. - The price cut is all but confirmed as a reaction to the Chevrolet Bolt EV and its $5,500 effective price cut made for 2022, which came with significant updates and a new Bolt EUV model slotting just above the standard Bolt EV in the lineup. The standard Leaf continues with a 40-kilowatt-hour battery pack and a single electric motor rated at 147 horsepower - The 2022 Nissan Leaf S may at launch offer the lowest-priced electric car lease available nationally. The money is so good that some like Meng, who graduated from Cambridge University in 2013 and worked as a regional business developer in France, were able to ditch their corporate careers. - With all the competing models, carmakers are increasingly using influencers to cut through the clutter. Their preferred messengers: media-savvy young people who use social platforms to talk about and review EVs to legions of followers that stretch into the hundreds of thousands. That makes sense because, rather than dealing solely with a dealership, many EV buyers in China browse online, interact with an influencer, or perhaps go to a high-end mall to view the finished product in a boutique-like setting—all before visiting a dealer lot or ever getting behind a wheel. - As well as being paid directly by automakers for appearances and test drives, influencers make money by charging for social media posts, with the rates they can command typically linked to the number of followers they have. One said he earned 10,000 yuan ($1,550) for posting four shots from the Shanghai auto show. NISSAN LEAF PRICE REDUCTIONS A couple of follow-ups from yesterdays podcast. We talked about the Nissan price reductions, but one listener asked how MUCH was the LEAF reduced by? So here goes with a number dump... Acenta £25,995 (£1,350) N-Connecta £27,995 (£650) LEAF 10 £28,670 (£650) Tekna £29,995 (£665) E+ N-Connecta £30,445 (Downwards arrow £5,250) E+ Tekna £32,445 (Downwards arrow £5,265) TESLA MODEL 3 SELLS WELL IN UK & GERMANY Second follow up from yesterday we talked about the UK plug-in share being 14% in March, but what about specific cars? "As usual, we have very thin up-to-date numbers from the SMMT on popular plugin models in the UK. Worth noting is that several of the top 10 best selling autos now have plugin variants (table below)." says Max Holland at CleanTechnica: "The Tesla Model 3, thanks to its usual end-of-quarter push, did get in to the top 10 overall autos in March, at #4 spot. Its total volume over the first quarter – of around 7,300 – should have put it at a respectable #11 spot on the overall best sellers list for the year so far, a good result." Remember the UK government removed the car grant on March 18th but Tesla responded by saying they would artificially rude their prices, ie keep them the same for the customer, IF you ordered by March 31st. So Tesla taking the hit might have persuaded people to bring forward purchases. Tesla's German registrations in Q1 were up 83% year-over-year. Tesla registered 6,074 vehicles in Germany. In March alone it was 3,703. In Germany most EVs were sold by VW though, with over 10,000 in Feb of the ID.3, e-UP and PHEV Golf. https://cleantechnica.com/2021/04/06/uk-hits-13-9-plugin-share-in-march-up-almost-2x-year-on-year BMW GROUP SOLD OVER 70,000 PLUG-INS IN Q1 BMW Group sales of electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles totaled 70,207 in in the first quarter of the year, an increase of 129.8% percent over the 30,692 sold in the same period a year ago. With the BMW iX3, which was just released in Europe a few weeks ago, the BMW i3 and the MINI Cooper SE, the BMW Group already offers a strong range of fully-electric vehicles that will be joined over the course of the year by two key innovation flagships: the BMW iX and the BMW i4. The BMW Group expects fully-electric vehicles to account for at least 50% of its global sales in 2030. The MINI brand is likely to reach this milestone already in 2027. MERCEDES SNAGS A EUROPEAN TRADEMARK FOR EQG "Last fall, Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius talked about the company's plans to electrify its popular G-Class SUV, and now, a European Union Intellectual Property Office filing found by members of the MBEQClub forum and reported on by The Drive Friday shows that Mercedes has trademarked the name "EQG." " says CNET: "This trademark filing very likely means that Mercedes is planning on offering a fully-battery-electric Geländewagen, rather than one that's merely been "electrified" with a hybrid system." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/mercedes-snags-a-european-trademark-for-eqg/ TESLA ROLLS OUT PREFAB SUPERCHARGER "A recent Supercharger installation in Beaver, Utah, has caught the eye of the electric vehicle community. Based on an image shared of the Supercharger site, it appears that the charging stalls have been pre-installed on a large concrete slab. Speculations initially suggested that the setup was just an updated iteration of the Megapack-powered mobile Superchargers that Tesla deploys during peak seasons, but it soon became evident that the setup in the recently-shared images was quite different. " reports Teslarati: "By setting up the Superchargers and their electronics on large concrete slabs even before they are placed in their respective locations, Tesla would be able to complete Supercharger installations much faster. It could also help the company install large numbers of Superchargers more efficiently. The pic shows a line of 4 superchargers and 2 cabinets on one flatbed truck. https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-prefab-supercharger-images/ TESLA DELAYS DELIVERIES OF NEW MODEL S AND MODEL X ELECTRIC VEHICLES "Tesla buyers who ordered the new, recently refreshed Model S and Model X models are seeing their deliveries being pushed back as the automaker is experiencing delays in bringing the vehicles to production. When Tesla unveiled the new refreshed Model S and Model X in January, CEO Elon Musk said that the first deliveries would happen within a few weeks." says electrek: " That was six weeks ago, and there has yet to be a single reported new Model S or Model X delivery. Tesla appears to have run into some issues in producing and/or getting the new Model S and Model X ready for deliveries. Now, many Tesla buyers who placed orders early after the new Model S was launched are seeing their estimated delivery dates pushed back by a few months." Elon Musk said on the earning call that he would hold an event within a couple of weeks to discuss the cars in more detail...that never happened. https://electrek.co/2021/04/07/tesla-delays-deliveries-new-model-s-x-electric-vehicles/ 2021 WORLD CAR OF THE YEAR: VW ID.4 AND HONDA E AMONG FINALISTS "The recently announced short list of finalists for The 2021 World Car of the Year (WCOTY) award include several electric cars - two in the main category. Volkswagen ID.4 and Honda e will compete for the World Car of the Year title. We can see two more all-electric models - Polestar 2 and Mazda MX-30 - considered also in specific categories" says InsideEVs: "The last time we saw an electric car on the top was the Jaguar I-PACE in 2019, and previously the Nissan LEAF in 2011." "A jury of 93 distinguished international automotive journalists selected the finalists by secret ballot based on their evaluation of each eligible vehicle as part of their professional work. KPMG tabulated the vote results." New Canoo chairman Tony Aquila broke the news last Monday during an “icy investor call,” as The Verge reports. The collapse is set against a backdrop of a strategy change at Canoo." reports electrive: "The Californian start-up seems to want to keep their skateboard platform to themselves and sell vehicles to fleet operators rather than selling the EV technology to third parties. Canoo had announced the deal with Hyundai in February 2020, and it was supposed to result in both the Hyundai and Kia brands building vehicles on Canoo’s electric vehicle platform." https://www.electrive.com/2021/04/05/hyundai-kia-wont-use-canoo-ev-platform-it-appears/ HYUNDAI UNVEILS 2021 KONA ELECTRIC PRICING FOR AUS "Hyundai has released pricing and specifications details for the 2021 Kona Electric, which gets not only a fresh new face but also an increase in range and new driver-assist and technology features. Doing away with the honeycomb-style “grille” in favour of a sleeker nose and lines, the 2021 Hyundai Kona Electric offers 484km (WLTP) driving range up from the 2019 model’s 449km, thanks in part to new low rolling resistance tyres." says thedriven.io: "It will still offer the same 150kW power output from its single-speed motor, as well as the same battery size, but pricing will increase slightly to a base price of $62,000 for the Elite model and $66,000 for the range-topping Highlander." https://thedriven.io/2021/04/07/hyundai-unveils-2021-kona-electric-pricing-with-longer-range-and-design-tweaks/ BLUE BIRD DELIVERS ELECTRIC SCHOOL BUS EQUIPPED WITH NUVVE V2G TECH "Iconic school bus manufacturer Blue Bird has delivered an electric school bus equipped with V2G (vehicle-to-grid) technology from Nuvve, one of two Blue Bird Type C electric buses delivered to two school districts in Illinois. The e-buses are powered by the Cummins PowerDrive EV system." says ChargedEVs: "Nuvve’s V2G platform allows the bus batteries to store energy, allowing fleets to sell energy to local utilities at times of peak demand. The system can also be used to supply energy to the school and to intelligently charge the buses during non-peak hours to reduce utility demand charges. Hollis Consolidated School District’s latest e-bus purchase makes the district’s fleet 100% electric. A completely white land, where about 200 words are used to describe snow by the local culture, with temperatures reaching 30 below zero and a circuit on a 6 km2 frozen lake. The CUPRA engineers have spent two years testing the car on this harsh environment, using cutting-edge technology to take the development of the CUPRA Born to the highest level. Now in the final test stage before its launch, they are pushing the brand’s first 100% electric car to its limits in the most difficult conditions." FIRST LOOK AT THE NEW MINI COOPER EV " the Mini Cooper SE is the only EV in Mini's model lineup, delivering an EPA-rated range of 110 miles courtesy of an electric motor producing 181 horsepower and 199 lb-ft of torque. When the next-generation Mini Cooper arrives, it will be offered as a fully-electric hatchback, but a combustion-powered model will be sold alongside it. For the first time, our spy photographers have caught Mini testing the next-generation Cooper EV in the snow." says CarBuzz: "Development is clearly at an early stage as the prototype is heavily camouflaged and fitted with fake headlight rings, taillights, and a Cooper S-style hood air intake. Despite Mini's efforts to mask the car's identity, the prominent "electric test vehicle" sticker is an obvious giveaway. a close-up of the driver's side window reveals the prototype is fitted with a familiar-looking curved dual-screen display. This mirrors the dashboard layout of current BMW models, which may upset some Mini fans. It will be a radical departure from the current Cooper's funky cabin that's dominated by circular elements. The next-generation Mini Cooper is expected to arrive in 2023 and will it will be joined by two electric crossovers in the same year." https://carbuzz.com/news/heres-your-first-look-at-the-new-mini-cooper-ev JEEP WRANGLER 4XE OFFICIAL EPA RANGE "The 2021 Wrangler 4xe Plug-In Hybrid Has Been Rated By The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as capable of covering 21 miles (34 km) in zero-emissions mode." according to AutoEvolution: "That doesn’t compare favorably to Jeep’s initial estimates of a fully electric range of 25 miles (40 km). Foxconn, which trades as Hon Hai Precision Industry, first revealed plans to assemble electric vehicles for automakers last October. The company has set a goal of capturing a 10% share of the global EV market between 2025 and 2027." They say: "We think that regionalized or decentralized production will be the way to go for EVs. Automobiles are very big and difficult to ship. The shipping costs are much higher than shipping a cellphone." So Byton will be first. Huawei is also in discussions with Beijing-backed BAIC Group's BluePark New Energy Technology to manufacture its EVs. The Chinese battery company Svolt Energy wants to build a gigafactory in Saarland." writes de24.news: "Not far from this actual battery production – which, according to media reports, should start as early as 2023 – assembly will then take place in Heusweiler, less than 25 kilometers away. The company announced this together with the Saarland Prime Minister Tobias Hans at a press conference. The port in Königs Wusterhausen is to handle all deliveries for Tesla from summer. To this end, the port area is to be expanded by 25,000 square meters. This is a godsend for the port and the region, because four years ago it was on the verge of collapse." says Torquenews: "The inland port has both a rail connection and a connection to the A10. This is all superior technology that successfully differentiates Porsche from the competition." " But what does that mean? Because they only race in Formula E, but are leaving this year, and any the battery part of that series is spec and supllied by athird party to every team. So they ouldn't have been talking about FE. Where ELSE are Audi racing? Are they going back to LeMans or maybe Formula 1? The Drive reached out to Porsche to ask where this left its Formula E entry, to which a spokesperson replied: "VW Group's Power Day was about innovative high-performance cell chemistry which is intended for future use in high-performance, limited-production-run cars and in customer motorsport." So Porsche want to develop high performance batteries of supercars and race cars, what what race cars? https://www.thedrive.com/accelerator/39859/porsches-future-ev-batteries-will-be-developed-on-the-race-track ANALYST PREDICTS £18K TESLA COULD BRING ABOUT EVEN CHEAPER £5K EV " As companies gain experience designing and manufacturing EVs and build them in higher volumes, analysts predict that the number of parts needed for an entire vehicle could at some point in the future drop from the 10,000 or so mark today to around 100 (or even less). But with mounting pressure by governments who now favour electric vehicles over ICE, manufacturers may not have a choice and focus more and more on EVs. In fact, the Morgan Stanley analysts say" reports Motor1: " The cheapest ‘real car’ with an electric powertrain that you can currently order in Europe is the Dacia Spring, a subcompact model that costs €16,990 (which equates to approximately £14,550) in France" https://uk.motor1.com/news/495375/25k-tesla-could-bring-5k-ev/ CLASSIC MGS GET BACK ON THE OPEN ROAD WITH ELECTRIC MAKEOVER "A swathe of companies are now ripping out classic cars’ petrol engines and replacing them with battery systems, or even building all-new replicas of historic vehicles with the latest electric powertrains. One of the newest entrants to this burgeoning market is Staffordshire-based RBW, which takes original MG designs to build entirely new cars fitted with the company's own electric drivetrain." writes Telegraph.co.uk: "RBW is now road-testing a pre-production model of its electric Roadster which is limited to an 80mph top speed, can hit 60mph in nine seconds and has a 160-mile range. However, the new Roadster is not as true to the original MGs of the 1960s promise of driving thrills on a budget - RBW's car costs approaching £100,000 " https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2021/03/20/classic-mgs-get-back-open-road-electric-makeover/ CONTACTLESS PAYMENT PREFERRED "NetX, the project behind a three-socket EV charger, has revealed the results of its charging survey. The Innovate UK-backed project asked both EV and non-EV drivers about how easy it is to charge an electric car, one of the biggest questions for prospective EV drivers according to the study." says CitiMagazine: "For payment solutions, 85% of people said they wanted to pay for public charging by contactless debit or credit card payment or automatic payment on plug in. Only 10% wanted to pay by smartphone app and less than 5% wanted to pay by RFID card or tag." https://www.cittimagazine.co.uk/news/electric-vehicles-charging/contactless-payment-preferred-by-users-of-public-ev-chargers-study-finds.html BILL GATES ON THE URGENT SHIFT TO EVS "Batteries are getting better, but it’s hard to see how they’ll ever close this gap. If we’re lucky, they may become up to three times as energy dense as they are now, in which case they would still be 12 times less energy dense than gas or jet fuel. Our best bet is to replace jet fuel with electrofuels and advanced biofuels, but there are hefty premiums that come with them. The same goes for cargo ships. The best conventional container ships can carry 200 times more cargo than either of the two electric ships now in operation, and they can run routes that are 400 times longer. Those are major advantages for ships that need to cross entire oceans. There are four ways to cut down on emissions from transportation. One is to do less of it. Another way to cut down on emissions is to use fewer carbon-intensive materials in making cars to begin with. The third way to cut down on emissions is to use fuels more efficiently. the fourth — and most effective — way we can move toward zero emissions from transportation: switching to electric vehicles and alternative fuels. We can speed up the transition by adopting policies that encourage people to buy EVs and creating a network of charging stations so they’re more practical to own. Nationwide commitments can help drive up the supply of cars and drive down their cost." SK INNOVATION LOSES CASE WITH LG CHEM, FACES BAN "The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) on Wednesday sided with South Korea's chemicals and electric vehicle (EV) battery maker LG Chem Ltd, which accused its crosstown rival SK Innovation Co Ltd of misappropriating trade secrets related to EV battery technology." says Autoblog; "The ITC said it was issuing a limited 10-year exclusion order but would permit SK to import components for domestic production of lithium ion batteries, battery cells, battery modules, and battery packs for Ford Motor Co's EV F-150 program for four years, and for Volkswagen of America's MEB electric vehicle line for the North America region for two years. The ITC said the decision would allow the automakers to transition to new suppliers for these programs. SK Innovation is building two EV battery factories in Georgia to manufacture batteries for us in Volkswagen and Ford electric vehicles. LG Chem has set up an EV battery cell venture plant with GM in Ohio." https://www.autoblog.com/2021/02/10/sk-innovations-lg-chem-trade-secrets-case/ TESLA RANGE ESTIMATES CALLED INTO QUESTION IN INDEPENDENT TESTS "Tesla range estimates are called into question in new independent tests by Edmunds showing that Tesla’s vehicles don’t hit their EPA estimates." says EV website electrek: "Edmunds tried to compare the EPA ratings of 15 electric vehicles, including five Tesla vehicles, against real-world range. Edmunds was unable to achieve the EPA range on any of the Tesla vehicles, while they beat the EPA range by some decent margins in other electric vehicles." 2020 MINI Cooper SE 110 miles 150 miles (+36.5%) 2020 Porsche Taycan 4S 203 miles 323 miles* (+59.3%) 2020 Kia Niro EV 239 miles 285 miles (+19.2%) 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E AWD Ext Range 270 miles 304 miles (+12.6%) What is the EPA methodology? Asks Edmunds: " First, the vehicle is fully charged and parked overnight. The following day, the vehicle is driven on a dynamometer — it's like a treadmill for cars — over successive simulated city and highway routes until the battery is depleted. The total distance traveled is then multiplied by a correction factor that the EPA has determined will more accurately reflect what drivers can expect to achieve in the real world. The value of this correction factor, which is always less than 1 but greater than 0, is determined by the number of drive cycles a vehicle is tested on. In short, there's certainly a method to the EPA's madness, but the process is laboratory-based, and EV owners don't drive their cars in a lab" https://electrek.co/2021/02/10/tesla-range-estimates-put-into-question-independent-tests/ https://www.edmunds.com/car-news/electric-car-range-and-consumption-epa-vs-edmunds.html VOLKSWAGEN GROUP TEAMS UP WITH MICROSOFT Volkswagen Group’s Car.Software Organisation and Microsoft will build an Automated Driving Platform for the agile development of automated driving functions With the cloud-based platform, Car.Software Organisation will simplify its development processes on Microsoft Azure to bring automated driving solutions to the Group’s cars even faster With the Volkswagen Automotive Cloud, the automated driving functions can be tested, deployed and operated https://www.volkswagenag.com/en/news/2021/02/volkswagen-group-teams-up-with-microsoft-to-accelerate-the-devel.html 2022 MERCEDES EQS SPIED WITH LESS CAMO TO REVEAL LIFTBACK LAYOUT. In January 2021, 13.7% of new automobile sales were sales of plugin vehicles, nearly 7% were due to Brits buying fully electric vehicles. The market is growing fast, and premium-class buyers will increasingly desire the new hottest tech and will demand fully electric powertrains. Detroit Diesel will manufacture electric powertrains for the upcoming Freightliner eCascadia semi truck and Freightliner eM2 medium-duty truck, according to a press release from Daimler Trucks, parent company of both Freightliner and Detroit Diesel." says Green Car Reports: "The Detroit ePowertrain will be available in a single-motor configuration with 180 horsepower and 11,500 pound-feet of torque, and a dual-motor version producing 360 hp and 23,000 lb-ft of torque. The eCascadia and eM2 will also be offered with three battery-pack sizes—210 kwh, 315 kwh, and 475 kwh—using prismatic lithium-ion battery cells. Daimler estimates a maximum range of 230 miles for the eM2 and 250 miles for the eCascadia tractor." TIME FOR EU TO SET NATIONAL TARGETS FOR EV CHARGERS We, the undersigned, call for the European Commission to urgently review the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure law and propose an ambitious regulation rather than a directive, and to set binding national targets for all vehicle segments. Changing this into a regulation would: - Help harmonize the common market for zero emission road transport across Europe, from re-charging and re-fuelling standards, to payment methods, to tariff transparency to maintenance and more; - Allow for swift implementation to align with the fast-growing ZEV market given that transposition into national law of a directive can take multiple years; - Grant the framework to cover the areas where most re-charging will happen in the immediate future (i.e. charging in public parking facilities like supermarket parking lots). https://www.transportenvironment.org/sites/te/files/publications/Joint%20letter%20T%26E%2C%20ACEA%2C%20BEUC.pdf TESLA MUST RECALL 12,300 MODEL X CARS OVER PARTS THAT COULD FALL OFF "Tesla must recall around 12,300 Model X cars worldwide over body molding problems, Germany's motor vehicle authority (KBA) said on its website. KBA said the recall affects cars built in 2015 and 2016, adding there was a risk that the molding could fall off the vehicle." reports Autoblog. And CNET says: "Back in November, the automaker said it would recall some 9,500 Model X SUVs in the US for faulty roof trim adhesive following a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation. In Western Europe, the share of electric vehicles therefore surged to 10.5 percent of overall deliveries (2019: 1.9 percent). The Volkswagen Group handed over 9,305,400 vehicles to customers worldwide in 2020, a decrease of 15.2 percent year-on-year due to Covid-19. This brought the share of BEV and hybrid vehicles in Europe up to 12.4 percent of the brand’s total deliveries – after 2.3 percent in 2019. The most popular model was the ID.3 with 56,500 units sold – even though this only came on the market in September. ID.3 was the most frequently delivered BEV in Finland, Slovenia and Norway in December. In Sweden, the ID.3 was actually the top-selling car in December 2020 in absolute numbers – regardless of the type of drive. In the Netherlands and Germany, Volkswagen Passenger Cars managed to leap to the number one spot in all-electric vehicles over the full-year 2020 – with a share of 23.8 percent in Germany in the BEV market and 23 percent in the Netherlands. Following closely on the heels of the ID.3, Volkswagen’s second all-electric model, the ID.4 is being successively launched. It is the brand’s first all-electric world car and as an SUV is also right in line with customer trends: the share of SUVs of Volkswagen’s total deliveries worldwide rose from 29.8 percent in 2019 to 34.8 percent in 2020. https://www.volkswagenag.com/en/news/2021/01/Volkswagen-brand-triples-deliveries-of-all-electric-vehicles-in-2020.html AUDI E-TRON SELLS ALMOST 50,000 IN 2020 79.5% growth in e-tron deliveries to 47,324 units last year. AUDI AG is continuing its transformation into a provider of sustainable premium mobility and is by some distance the biggest maker of electric vehicles among the three German premium brands. The successful Audi e-tron model (including the Audi e-tron Sportback) registered a significant increase in demand last year, with growth of 79.5 percent (47,324 cars) compared with the previous year. The Audi e-tron is the global top seller among electric vehicles made by German premium manufacturers. In Norway it is even the best-selling of all models. In Germany the Audi e-tron (including the Audi e-tron Sportback) was able to more than double its sales volume in the final quarter in comparison with the previous year. Although Audi Europe was down 19%, the e-tron and e-tron Sportback was up 80%. Next up the cheaper Q4 e-tron, and the Taycan rivalling e-tron GT Here's a thought. In 2020 Tesla make 55,000 of the Model S and Model X combined. TAYCAN DELIVERS 20,000 IN 2020 Taycan deliveries totaled 20,015 in 2020, despite a six-week pause in production just as the new model was ramping up, and despite many markets planning spring premieres. BMW GROUP SOLD 192,646 ELECTRIFIED VEHICLES IN 2020 The BMW Group sold a total of 192,646 electrified BMW and MINI vehicles worldwide last year – an increase of a third (+31.8%) over 2019. This means that electromobility is also a significant growth driver for the company in absolute terms. Sales of fully electric vehicles rose by 13 percent, while plug-in hybrid sales climbed by almost 40 percent. In Europe, electrified vehicles already accounted for 15 percent of total sales. The BMW Group has now increased the number of electrified vehicles (pure electric and plug-in hybrid) in its line-up to 13 models, which are available in 74 markets around the globe. By 2023, the BMW Group plans to almost double its line-up to 25 electrified vehicles, of which more than half will be fully electric. The introduction of the pure-electric MINI Cooper SE, with 17,580 vehicles sold in 2020, and BMW iX3 last year will be followed in 2021 by the start of production for the fully electric BMW iX in Dingolfing and the BMW i4 in Munich JAGUAR I-PACE SALES HIT NEW RECORD HIGH IN Q4 2020 "After several weaker quarters, Jaguar has finally announced really positive news that the Jaguar I-PACE significantly expanded in the fourth quarter of 2020 to an all-time quarterly record of 7,807 units globally." reports InsideEVs: "The year-over-year growth stands at 69%, and the I-PACE share out of the overall Jaguar volume surged to an unprecedented 27.8%! It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. WHAT EVS CAN WE EXPECT FROM STELLANTIS "By overwhelming margins, shareholders of both Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Peugeot parent Group PSA Monday morning approved a $58 billion merger creating the world's fourth-largest automaker, Stellantis." says NBC News: "Officials have suggested the merger will yield billions of dollars in annual savings while helping Stellantis accelerate development of the electric and autonomous vehicles expected to transform the auto industry over the coming decade. The new automaker will be under pressure to ramp up spending on both autonomous and electrified vehicles over the coming years. On the battery-car side, Stellantis will have to catch up with key competitors taking the lead in the race to bring electric vehicles to market." https://www.nbcnews.com/business/autos/peugeot-shareholders-vote-merge-fiat-chrysler-creating-world-s-fourth-n1252712 NISSAN TO BUILD ITS NEW EV IN JAPAN AND NOT THE UK "The Japanese paper Nikkei reported that the new Nissan Ariya will be built in Japan rather than at Nissan’s UK factory in Sunderland. According to the paper, Nissan considered Sunderland but Brexit worries led the manufacturer to decide in favour of exporting the Ariya from Japan." says Next Green Car: " The UK plant that makes the Leaf and Qashqai has, at times, built more than 500,000 units a year, though that dropped to 350,000 in 2019. About 80% of those models are exported. The Ariya is the first EV from Nissan since the Leaf debuted a decade ago. The model will be sold in phases next year in Japan, Western markets, and China. Ariyas bound for Europe and the US will be made at Nissan's assembly plant in Japan's Tochigi Prefecture, north of Tokyo. https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/9055/nissan-to-build-its-new-ev-in-japan-and-not-the-uk/ NIO TEASES ITS FLAGSHIP SEDAN "NIO announced that during its annual NIO Day event, on January 09, 2021, it will unveil an all-new flagship sedan - actually the first sedan in NIO's lineup." reports InsideEVs: "If it will be similar to the good-looking NIO ET Preview concept from 2019 and we are extremely eager to see it. The Chinese manufacturer said that the car will be equipped with the latest autonomous driving technologies and a 150 kWh battery pack! This is basically the biggest battery in a passenger car ever (assuming series production models). We guess that range should exceed 600-800 km (370-500 miles), assuming energy consumption of: respectively 250wh & 200wh / km" https://insideevs.com/news/464111/nio-teases-flagship-sedan-150-kwh-battery/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-articles FOXCONN SEALS MANUFACTURING DEAL WITH CHINESE EV STARTUP BYTON "Apple Inc. supplier Foxconn Technology Group signed a strategic cooperation deal with embattled Chinese electric-vehicle startup Byton Ltd. in a transaction that could mark a large bet by the iPhone assembler on the car-making business." reports Bloomberg: "Foxconn will supply Byton with its advanced manufacturing technology, operation management expertise and supply chain resources. . The companies aim to start mass production of the Byton M-Byte by the first quarter of 2022, according to a statement Monday. Foxconn is the single most important production partner for Apple, which is reportedly considering developing a self-driving car of its own. Foxconn is also seeking to diversify a business that depends on the U.S. smartphone giant for half its revenue." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-01-04/foxconn-in-talks-with-chinese-ev-startup-byton-for-funding WORKHORSE GOT A LARGE ELECTRIC-VEHICLE ORDER Workhorse secured an order from Pride Group Enterprises for 6,320 C-Series all-electric vans. Workhorse’s C-Series vehicles are commercial delivery vans." reports Barrons: "Pride Group appears to be a privately held logistics company operating in the U.S. and Canada, offering services such as truck rental and trucking services. The company wasn’t immediately available to comment on the size of its operations, but Pride lists 260 trucks in its logistics group. the news release says the order is “subject to various production and delivery conditions.” That could mean that delivery is predicated on Pride Group’s own demand for delivery vehicles, itself driven by demand from Pride’s customers." https://www.barrons.com/articles/workhorse-just-got-a-new-electric-vehicle-order-what-it-means-for-the-stock-51609788398 TESLA CARS TO BE APPROVED FOR SALE IN ISRAEL "Tesla cars are about to be approved for use in Israel. The Transportation Ministry is set to approve the entrance of the US electric carmaker within the next day or so, a ministry spokesman said Monday." according to The Jerusalem Post: "Tesla was originally slated to launch its commercial operations in Israel in January and was set to open a pop-up store in Tel Aviv’s Ramat Aviv Mall. However, the launch was delayed by regulatory hurdles. Details about the company’s operations in Israel will be revealed once the approval is finalized." https://www.jpost.com/israel-news/tesla-cars-to-be-approved-for-sale-in-israel-654215 FIRST LOOK AT TESLA MODEL Y’S HEPA FILTER "It appears that the Tesla Model Y’s HEPA filter is quite sizable, and it is also designed in such a way that replacing it would not be a complicated affair. This was hinted at in an image recently shared by a Tesla enthusiast from China, who was fortunate enough to take a photo of the all-electric crossover’s HEPA filter. " says Sion at Teslarati: " the Model Y’s HEPA filter is installed just behind the all-electric crossover’s frunk. This would likely make the vehicle easier to service compared to its larger sibling, the Model X, which requires some disassembly of the frunk area when its HEPA filter is replaced. Members of the Tesla community have observed that the Model Y’s HEPA filter is quite large and close to the size of the filter found in the Model X, a vehicle that is significantly larger. The size of the component itself also highlights Elon Musk’s previous statements about the Model 3 not having enough space for a hospital-grade HEPA filter such as those found in the Model S and Model X. The company hopes to change that by introducing the production version of its 2017 E-Motion concept" says Jalopnik: "MG has been working on an ambitious growth strategy recently, which aims to get the company up to a million unit sales in 2024. The new electric sports car doesn’t have a name yet, but it will be a two-door 2+2 layout sports coupe. There’s no getting around that the concept looks very Jaguar F-Type in shape, perhaps with a little bit of Aston DBS for flavor. Initial reports regarding the car seem to indicate that MG is looking to launch the sports car for an incredibly reasonable 30,000 British Pounds. At current exchange rates, that’s about $40,000." Autoblog points out the scale from MG will come from the cheap end of the market though: "Storming into the electric sports car segment might elevate MG's image, but it won't significantly increase the firm's annual sales. It's building its volume goals on an electric, city-friendly hatchback that will be positioned in the same segment as the Honda E and the Mini Cooper SE, according to a separate Autocar report. Also due out in 2021, the city car will be about as big as the 3, MG's current entry-level model, and it will be considerably cheaper than its main rivals. Value, not performance, is the born-again brand's biggest selling point in 2021" https://jalopnik.com/mg-plans-electric-sports-car-with-300-miles-of-range-fo-1845988501 https://www.autoblog.com/2021/01/04/mg-electric-sports-car-emotion/ DEALERS FACE CHOICE: INVEST FOR EVS OR GET BENCHED "The electric revolution disrupting an auto industry set in its ways for more than a century is pushing dealerships to make a choice: invest in the future or sit on the sidelines." says Detroit News: "GMC told dealers they didn't have to transition to stay open. But if they want to sell the Hummer EV coming late this year, they must agree to invest in charging stations, training and tools needed to work on and sell electric vehicles. To sell Ford Motor Co.'s Mustang Mach-E, dealers have to be EV-certified with expanded charging abilities, increased service capabilities and more personnel training. Ford has 3,000 dealers and 2,100 have signed up for the certification." https://eu.detroitnews.com/story/business/autos/2021/01/04/car-dealers-must-invest-in-selling-electric-vehicles/4025584001/ 25 CHANGES THAT TESLA MADE TO THE MODEL 3 WITH THE 2021 REFRESH @1:32 New Aero Wheels & Cover @2:50 Chrome Delete @3:15 Smaller Frunk @3:35 Hood Easier To Close @4:12 Double Pane Glass On Front Windows @5:23 New Trunk Gasket @5:53 Automatic Opening & Closing Trunk @7:27 New Headlights @8:02 Trunk Opens 3” Less Than Before @8:46 Center Console Redesign @9:13 Wireless Charging Pads @9:21 Accent Stitching On Console Trim @9:38 Armrest Tray No Longer Included @9:56 USB-C Ports Replace USB-A In Center Console @10:34 Formatted USB Drive Included & Mounted In Glove Box @11:27 USB-C Ports replace USB-A In Rear Seating area @11:35 Metal Scroll Wheel On Steering Wheel @11:59 Graphite Colored Paint Used On Power Seat Controls @12:12 Magnetic Sun Visor Clips @12:32 New Graphic On Door Release Buttons @13:12 Heated Steering Wheel @13:54 Heat Pump System @15:25 Improved Battery Cells / More Capacity @16:25 Increased Range @17:21 Improved Efficiency QUESTION OF THE WEEK EV tech is on a rip, but is the constant improvement around an EV a possible reason NOT to buy one? It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. AUDI RS E-TRON GT PROTOTYPE IMPRESSES "Audi Sport, the division responsible for the automaker’s RS-badged models, has so far not done an electric vehicle. But it is currently putting the finishing touches on its first ever, an RS version of the upcoming Audi e-tron GT electric sedan, and it’s let journalists and influencers have a go in it." says InsideEVs: "Those who have had the chance to try it out, including Carwow’s Mat Watson and Misha Charoudin, were really impressed by the performance and the looks of the vehicle. They not only got to drive the vehicle in a controlled traffic-free environment, but they were also allowed to take the prototypes out on the road. Mat measured its performance with specialist timing gear - he recorded the RS e-tron GT as being able to sprint to sixty in 2.88 seconds and it completed the quarter-mile in 10.94 seconds at almost 130 mph (210 km/h)." The excellent evo.co.uk says: "Audi’s take on the Taycan is more relaxed than its Porsche counterpart, but will still make you second-guess that RS7 order" but doesn that imply to you like this is an Audi-badged Taycan? It's definitely not. It may share the J1 Performance PLatform but it's not a rebadged Porsche, everything you see (and a lot you can't see) is all designed by the Audi engineers. So you'll see similarities but correlation does not imply causation. They write: "The RS e-tron GT sits roughly on par with the non-S Taycan Turbo in terms of output. Its front-axle motor develops 175kW (235bhp) through a single-speed gearbox, and the rear 335kW (449bhp) through a two-speed unit and locking diff, for a combined 510kW (684bhp) – 10kW (13bhp) greater than the Taycan Turbo’s peak output. Like other recent Audi Sport models, the RS e-tron GT has a suite of features to keep its mass under control, from four-wheel steering to new three-chamber adaptive air suspension, the latter dropping the car 22mm for aerodynamics at high speed, 10mm in sporty driving, or raising it 20mm at low speeds for extra clearance." CAR mag says: "Pricing is TBC, but expect a £120,000 ballpark – a circa £20k premium over the non-RS e-Tron GT. Just like the Taycan, there’s a two-speed transmission on the rear axle, and a focus on coasting rather than recuperation to extend battery range. However, the Audi apparently uses its front e-motor a little more for reasons of efficiency, but can switch so rapidly to the rear (5x faster than mechanical all-wheel drive) that the effect on dynamic driving should be minimal. Expect more than 248 miles on the WLTP cycle. Charge times will be equivalent to the Taycan, with a maximum DC charging capacity of 270kW, for a theoretical 62 miles of range in 5 minutes. One engineer said the Porsche was ‘more about every last bit of lap time’, hence Dynamic mode is softer than a Taycan’s Sport, and there’s no Sport Plus equivalent." "Battery-pack capacity is one spec that makes no match with the Taycan. While the Porsche has a 79.2-kwh Performance Battery or a 93.4-kwh Performance Battery Plus, the E-Tron GT has an 83.7-kwh (net) battery with 396 pouch cells split into 33 modules. " according to Green CAr Reports: "The GT has two coolant circuits running at different temperature levels—a cooler one for the battery pack and a warmer one for the motors and power electronics. There are also cooling and heating circuits for the interior. Between the four circuits, a series of valves allow the systems to be flexibly interconnected, to function as a heat pump for the interior. In fact, he doesn't even think the marque will reach an EV spread of 50%, at least in his lifetime, according to remarks he made during an investor call. Ferrari declined to comment further." says CNET.com: "Ferrari rolled out its first plug-in hybrid last year in the SF90 Stradale and the company thinks it will have an electric car ready after 2025. But, the it's not in a rush to go totally electric. The plug-in hybrids will eventually be dropped and the automaker will become an EV-only brand by 2030." reports CarScoops: "This is a huge change as Bentley is the “world’s largest producer of 12-cylinder petrol engines” and they’ll be completely phased out in less than a decade." https://www.carscoops.com/2020/11/bentley-to-become-an-ev-only-brand-petrol-engines-to-be-phased-out-by-2030/ UK EV SALES UP 195% battery electric and plug-in hybrid car uptake grew substantially to account for more than one in 10 registrations as new models continue to increase consumer choice. Demand for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) increased by 195.2%, while plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) were up 148.7% compared with October last year. 9,335 BEV in Oct and 76k YTD GERMANY MARKS OCTOBER SALES RECORDS FOR EVS "According to the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), exactly 23,158 electric cars were newly registered in Germany in October, marking a new record. Compared to the same month last year, this segment recorded an increase of no less than 365.1 per cent." reports electrive: "In terms of market share, all-electric passenger cars in Germany reached 8.4 per cent in October – in September the figure was 8 per cent." https://www.electrive.com/2020/11/04/germany-marks-october-sales-records-for-evs/ NORTHVOLT COMMISSIONS FIRST PUBLIC ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEM Northvolt has commissioned its first public energy storage system at an electric vehicle charging station in Västerås, Sweden. The battery system is the first that local energy provider Mälarenergi has deployed alongside EV charging infrastructure. The system serves to reduce peaks in electricity demand of the charging station by more than 80%, thereby lessening the demands of electric vehicle charging on the electricity network. Northvolt has delivered a lithium-ion battery system based around its modular battery system, Voltrack, which provides power output up to 220 kW and a usable energy capacity of 320 kWh. The battery system functions as a buffer between the electricity grid and EV charging station to enable peak shaving and load levelling. Peak shaving in this way helps utilities to meet demand without relying on peaking generators which are increasingly recognized as a costly and inefficient way to compensate for new demands of EV charging. https://northvolt.com/newsroom/Rocklunda-Nov2020 TESLA LAUNCHES NEW WINTER TYRES AND WHEELS "Tesla has launched its Model Y winter tire and wheel package just in time for the first snow and regulations in the north. In the Northeast, many jurisdictions require drivers to install winter tires on their vehicles before a certain deadline in order to improve road safety." according to electrek.co: " Now with the Model Y about to face its first winter, Tesla has released the “Model Y 19″ Gemini Wheel and Winter Tire Package. It comes with PIRELLI WINTER SOTTOZERO™ tires and costs $3,500 in the US and $4,700 in Canada; If your Model Y is sporting bigger than 19″ wheels with summer/all-season tires, we do recommend downgrading to 19″ for the winter, and that’s where Tesla’s wheel and tire package becomes a more attractive option." https://electrek.co/2020/11/04/tesla-model-y-winter-tire-wheel-package-launch/# UPDATED: BMW'S CHANGE OF EV PHILOSOPHY From Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW: " We delivered more than 116,000 electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids to customers in the first nine months – a new all-time high and a significant year-on-year increase of 20 percent. This trend became even clearer in October. The MINI Cooper SE has delighted around 13,000 customers since March – and our current order book is just as full. The BMW iX3 will be arriving in showrooms in the next few days. In 2021, the BMW i4 will come out of Plant Munich, with an electric range of up to 600 km. Followed in 2021 by the iNEXT. The Board of Management took the series version for a test drive. I’m sure this car will surprise and delight a lot of people. We expect demand for fully-electric vehicles to continue increasing significantly from 2025 on. Exactly then – just at the right time – we will launch phase III of our transformation. Our new cluster architecture is geared towards electric drive trains. This area reports directly to me. It is organisationally connected to all divisions – from markets, finance, procurement, development and production, all the way to sales and marketing. This gives us greater leverage and makes us much faster – also in our cooperation with partners. The objective is for the new architecture to create an overall optimum. Our new plant in Hungary will play a key role in this, ramping up the new BEV-centric architecture from the middle of the decade." https://www.press.bmwgroup.com/global/article/detail/T0319993EN/statement-oliver-zipse-chairman-of-the-board-of-management-of-bmw-ag-conference-call-interim-report-to-30-september-2020 You can listen to all 923 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically.
