Right next to the future site of the 2026 Winter Olympics, researchers found a field of dinosaur footprints.On parle de l'un des plus importants au monde, vieux de plus de 200 millions d'années. E poi ci sono delle scoperte: in Lombardia, sulle montagne dello Stelvio, sono state trovate migliaia di impronte di dinosauri; mentre nell'oceano Pacifico gli scienziati hanno osservato per la prima volta una curiosa collaborazione tra orche e delfini. Infine parliamo di wc e del perché in Giappone suonano sempre più spesso.

Nella mattinata di venerdì 19 dicembre, è stato ospite in Degiornalist - Gli Spaccanotizie, il paleontologo Cristiano Dal Sasso del Museo di Storia Naturale di Milano, che ci ha illustrato l'eccezionale ritrovamento di migliaia di impronte di dinosauri nel Parco dello Stelvio. Le tracce, risalenti a circa 210 milioni di anni fa, rivelano il passaggio di branchi composti da esemplari adulti e giovani lungo antichi litorali fangosi. «È importante non solo per noi lombardi, che abbiamo finalmente un giacimento di orme di dinosauri anche nella nostra regione - spiega il paleontologo ai nostri Fabiana Paolini e Claudio Chiari - ma è importante a livello globale perché del triassico superiore ci sono pochi siti con poche orme. Qui invece Elio della Ferrera, il fotografo che le ha viste per primo, ne ha trovate migliaia». Grazie all'utilizzo di tecnologie moderne come i droni, i ricercatori possono analizzare pareti verticali altrimenti inaccessibili per ricostruire i comportamenti di questi erbivori bipedi. L'esperto sottolinea come lo studio dei fossili non sia solo una ricerca accademica, ma uno strumento essenziale per comprendere l'evoluzione biologica e i rischi climatici attuali: «Penso che sia interesse di tutti sapere chi siamo e da dove veniamo prima di tutto e poi dal passato possiamo anche imparare. Noi siamo ormai la specie dominante al punto tale che abbiamo cambiato il clima, lo stiamo condizionando. Però attenzione, perché questo può portare a delle estinzioni», conclude Cristiano Dal Sasso.

Nel 1825, quando il Lombardo-Veneto faceva parte dell'Impero Asburgico, veniva inaugurata la Strada dello Stelvio, un'opera audace e armoniosa che collega l'Alta Valtellina alla Val Venosta, offrendo anche uno sbocco verso l'Engadina attraverso il Passo dell'Umbrail. Progettata dall'ingegnere Carlo Donegani, la via alpina si snoda per 46,5 chilometri tra 88 tornanti e 7 gallerie, raggiungendo i 2'758 metri del passo (è il valico più alto d'Italia). In soli cinque anni, Donegani trasformò un confine impervio in una moderna arteria alpina, integrata nel paesaggio e simbolo di equilibrio tra ingegno umano e natura.Nel 2024 nasce a Sondrio l'Associazione Istituto Ricerca e Studi Carlo Donegani, fondata da docenti e studenti del Liceo Scientifico “Donegani”. Da oltre vent'anni, la scuola valorizza l'eredità dell'ingegnere con ricerche, mostre e collaborazioni con istituti e professionisti. Le tavole originali dei progetti dello Stelvio e dello Spluga continuano a ispirare nuove generazioni. Lo Stelvio, oggi, è più di una strada: è un monumento vivente alla capacità dell'uomo di dialogare con la montagna.

Segment 3: August 3rd, 2024 With the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics happening now, it is fitting that the Carolina Outdoors covers some of the many other wonderful events that are happening in Europe. Coming onto this episode of the Show, we have Tom Blocker - adventurer extraordinaire and Storyteller's Night alum - to give insight into these colorful events and his experience with some of them! In fact, the recent Tour De France started in Florence, Italy and didn't finish in Paris for the FIRST time in its 111 years (due to the Olympic preparation that was occurring)! This event drew attention to the roadways between Bormio to Passo dello Stelvio, which contains beautiful switchback roads fantastic for all types of bicyclists and motorcyclists. Tom has spent over 40 years in the moto and auto business. and is a motorcycle enthusiast with recent time spent time in Italy. Tom speaks about this adventure in the Italian Alps! And fun fact: the Stelvio Pass is a 13.3 mile climb with an average gradient of 7.3% and a maximum gradient of 14%. It has 42 hairpin bends, a starting altitude of 3986ft., and an arrival altitude of 9049ft. The final 2.5 miles of the climb are the most difficult, with a gradient of over 8%! The road is in excellent condition and the views are stunning, but is is smart to be careful when the motorbikes are descending.
