Shoot us a Text.Donald Trump's return to the White House could disrupt the auto industry's EV ambitions. Plus, Elon Musk's advisory role with the new administration and his plans for autonomous tech. And, IKEA opens its first stand-alone restaurant in London.Show Notes with links:Former President Donald Trump has won the 2024 election, and his return could lead to major shifts for the auto industry, especially around electric vehicle (EV) policies, trade, and incentives. Here's what might be in limbo for automakers:EV Regulations: Trump may roll back aggressive EV mandates set under Biden, reducing pressure on automakers to hit strict electrification targets.Tax Credits: Biden-era EV tax credits could be at risk, impacting demand and profitability for manufacturers deeply invested in electric tech.California's Emission Standards: Trump might revoke California's right to set its own emissions standards, affecting states that follow its lead.Trade Policies: Trump may tighten restrictions on Chinese vehicle parts, intending to boost domestic production but likely increasing vehicle costs. The Elon factor: Here's how Musk's involvement could shape auto policies and beyond:Trump has proposed forming a government efficiency committee led by Musk, aiming to cut $2 trillion from the federal budget. Musk has already expressed his interest in reducing government spending by 30%.Musk advocates for a unified federal approval process for autonomous vehicles, reducing state-by-state regulatory inconsistencies. He commented, “If there is a department of government efficiency, I'll try to make that happen.”While Trump is generally less favorable toward EV mandates, analysts speculate that Musk's influence may push for selective pro-EV policies that align with Tesla's interests.Musk, a long-time proponent of U.S.-based manufacturing, may support Trump's trade stance on limiting Chinese parts imports, which could impact supply chains and costs for EV makers.Tesla stocks spiked 15% following the election, underscoring investor optimism over Musk's potential influence in the new administration.General Motors has claimed the number two spot in EV sales in the U.S. for Q3 2024, with 32,000 EVs sold across multiple brands. Ford, however, disputes GM's approach to these numbers.GM's EV lineup includes the Chevy Silverado, Blazer, Equinox EVs, GMC Hummer EV, and Cadillac Lyriq, all on the Ultium platform.GM has sold 370,000 EVs in North America since 2016, with 300,000 of those in the U.S. Tesla remains far ahead, with over 5 million units sold globally since 2008.Ford argues it's still the “No. 2 best-selling EV brand,” claiming GM's figures count all brands together, altering the comparison. From Reddit polls to repeat diners, IKEA's food offerings are beloved, with many customers visiting the store just for the food which is why IKEA's first stand-alone restaurant next to its Hammersmith store in London marks a fresh chapter for the brand, leveraging its famous Swedish Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email
Rising from the ashes of the defunct Hummer brand, the team at GMC gave the oversized off-roader a new lease on life as a model in its lineup. Leaning into Hummer's legacy, this GMC Hummer is appropriately large and carries a hefty price tag. Unlike its stand-alone predecessor, the reborn GMC Hummer showcased GM's massive Ultium battery-electric platform and previewed the rollout of the company's larger battery-electric offerings. Packing a 205 kWh battery pack underneath its shell. This large battery pack feeds either two or three electric motors, depending on how your rig is configured. In top trim, GMC says the Hummer EV throws 1,000 hp and over 1,200 lv-ft of torque toward the wheels. This potent power unit can shuffle this nearly five-ton pickup truck to 60 mph in an astounding 3.3 seconds. On this episode of Quick Spin, Autoweek's Mark Vaughn climbs behind the wheel of a 2024 GMC Hummer EV Pickup and puts it through its paces. Vaughn takes you on a guided tour of the GMC Hummer EV and highlights some of his favorite features and what it's like to experience in person. Later in the show, Vaughn takes you along for a live drive review. Adding to these segments, Vaughn chats with host Wesley Wren about the reborn Hummer brand, using the Hummer EV pickup as a pickup, and more. Closing the show, the pair try to wrap their heads around this massive EV.

It's a great Tuesday to get some people on the road as we talk about Ford's recent cuts to F150 Lighting prices. We also talk about GM selling all the cars they are making, as well as a new solution to solve 2 energy problems at once. The EV pricing wars are heating up as Ford Motor Co. has cut prices for its F-150 Lightning electric pickup trucks between $6,000 to $10,000, depending on the model. Marin Gjaja, the chief customer officer for Ford's EV unit, explained the price reductions are due to lower material costs and higher production capacityThe cheapest Lightning model, the commercial-focused Pro trim, will now start at $51,990, still 25% more expensive than at launch in April 2022. The highest-priced trim, the extended-range Platinum model, has been reduced by $6,079 to $93,990Ford is also adding an additional $1000 discount for customers ordering a truck before the end of JulyThe $7500 federal tax credit also applies to trucks under $80k meaning the entry level truck with all current discounts and credits costs: $43,490Ford CEO Jim Farley has previously cautioned against aggressive price cuts, arguing they can damage the resale value of vehicles and disappoint customers who purchased at higher prices.According to Rory Harvey, GM's North America president, the company has strong demand and is having some trouble delivering units to Dealers fast enough. At a Lansing, Michigan event, Harvey said, "At this particular point in time, we could just about sell every product that we can build."He partially credits the management of demand to the fact that "GM very strongly continues to have discipline in terms of incentives…”As far as challenges go, transporting vehicles from the plant to the dealerships by truck or rail is slower than they would like. When it comes to EV sales, Harvey declined to directly attribute the lower-than-expected sales of GM's newest electric vehicles, the GMC Hummer EV and Cadillac Lyriq, to issues with Ultium batteries, a potential bottleneck in production. GM sold 1,348 Lyriqs and 47 Hummers in the second quarter however Harvey predicts a significant increase in the second half of the yearOne California company in Lancaster, California, is giving new life to used EV batteries to store solar power, tackling two key issues in renewable energy: evening supply and battery disposal.B2U Storage Solutions is using retired EV batteries that still retain 60% to 70% of their original charge capacity to connect to a series of solar panels and then sells the solar power back to the grid during peak demand periods in the evening.Their site includes dozens of trailers full of the used EV batteries which can store solar power for five to six years before being recycled.Supply is the primary constraint but is obviously expected to increase as EV adoption growsThe company is currently profitable.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion
The Automotive Troublemaker w/ Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier
Happy Tuesday, troublemakers! Today we're covering Toyota's ramp-up of hydrogen fuel cells, the trouble with EV supply and demand, and the surprising rise of Threads.Toyota has been taking a measured approach to the future of automobiles, and is now investing in hydrogen fuel cell systems. Beginning in December, Toyota will start producing hydrogen fuel cell drivetrains in the US for the first time, all while developing a next-gen system. The Georgetown, KY plant will get a hydrogen dedicated line producing fuel cell modules for heavy duty trucks, with a goal of 200,000 commercial and passenger vehicles by… the year 2030.Trucking could be a breakthrough for hydrogen, as trucks run on established routes, and can guarantee business for costly hydrogen stations, creating a future network for passenger vehicles. In May, Toyota agreed with Daimler Truck Holding to merge Toyota's Hino subsidiary with Daimler's Mitsubishi Fuso truck unit.Producing 10,000 units a month is what Toyota needs to break even, according to Chief Technology Officer Hiroki Nakajima. He also said “Once we hit a tipping point, there will be explosive expansion.”In 2026, the Japanese automaker will introduce a new system that reduces the cost of the fuel stack by 50%, improves cruising range by 20% and will make the engine twice as durable as a diesel. The system will scale to fit all types of vehicles.Even though automakers have been scaling their EV output to challenge Tesla, there's one little problem: not enough buyers. According to Cox Automotive, the nationwide supply of EVs in stock has swelled nearly 350% this year, roughly 3 month's worth of supply.EV sales are expected to surpass 1 million units in 2023, about 6.5% of the auto market. Some notable brands with higher inventories:Genesis sold only 18 of its G80 sedans in June, with 210 in stock (a 350 day supply)Audi's Q4 and Q8, and the GMC Hummer EV all have inventories above 100 days and aren't eligible for federal tax credits.Imported models from Kia, Hyundai and Nissan are stacking up because they aren't eligible either. The once hot Ford Mach E has cooled to a 117 day supply. On the other end of the spectrum, hybrids have a lower inventory, with 44 days industrywide. Toyota's Prius and RAV4 are under 30 days.Instagram's new Threads app has reached 100 million users, even though it's only been out for a week.Mark Zuckerberg said the launch has been “way beyond our expectations. [It's] mostly organic demand and we haven't turned on many promotions yet.”Instagram head Adam Mosseri credited the team behind Threads. “We know this is a race to the starting line. They say ‘make it work, make it great, make it grow.' Well, we certainly did things out of order, but I promise we will make this thing great.”As of last Thursday, the platform had over 95 million posts and 190 million likes.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

A Munro Live video revealed concerns about the GMC Hummer EV battery's efficiency. The cost-intensive manufacturing process, including the battery cradle's assembly from 139 steel components and 3500 welds, could make it less competitive. A US study by Recurrent suggests that EV batteries should last as long as the vehicle itself. It also found that battery replacement under warranty could be beneficial for owners, potentially contradicting concerns about battery lifespan. France achieved its goal of 100,000 public EV charging stations, setting a new target of 400,000 by 2030. The country's push for EV infrastructure has sparked significant investment in local startups focusing on charging solutions. I get to drive a lot of vehicles, some 80 in 2022. These 11 are the ones that I think are worth looking at, the cars and trucks that are a great combination of value, features, design and capability. The ground rules- each one needs to be less than $100K or so reasonably optioned (that means no GMC Hummer EV or Porsche Taycans, which are terrific in what they do). I choose from a wide variety of categories that people actually buy, so not everything is a performance car. Check it out and see if you agree.

Walking into a much cooler Friday than last week for most of the country, we're covering a move by startup Autonomy to boost EV offerings, GM retooling and simplifying its chip infrastructure, as well as the Gen Z trend of trusting TikTok for search. EV Subscription Company, Autonomy (formerly NextCar) placed orders for 23K EV's across 17 Automakers, partnering with Auto Nation for both sales and service“The orders are for 45 different models and are valued at $1.2 billion per an Autonomy press release Will take delivery of all 23,000 vehicles within 18 months, Founder and CEO, Scott Painter told Automotive News.Until now the company only had Tesla Model 3s, and is moving to including the Model Y, several GM models including the Chevrolet Equinox, GMC Hummer EV and Cadillac Lyriq. Also about 1000 vehicles each from Volkswagen, Ford, Hyundai, Kia and Rivian and fewer than 500 each from Polestar, Volvo and CanooPainter founded TrueCar and FairTake away: We don't know if the business model will work or not, but it definitely will promote overall EV adoptionGM is retooling and significantly reducing the number of ‘chip families' it's using to clear backlogs and prevent them in the futureWere sitting on 95k assembled vehicles waiting on chips at the end o f Q2 and have cleared more than 20K of them in JulyPlan to reduce the number of chip families by 95% in future designs, to prevent future shortage CFO Paul Jacobson said the number of chip families used will drop by 95% down to 3 total. He also noted increased involvement throughout the manufacturing chainTake away: These aren't flashy announcements, but most nuts and bolts improvements aren't. That's a good thing. TikTok is becoming (or maybe IS) the preferred search engine of Gen ZWanda Pogue, Chief Strategy Officer at VaynerMedia cites a new study that shows 40% of Gen Z users prefer TikTok and Instagram over Google when it comes to search“...my Gen Z daughter had a group of friends over. I asked them about their behavior on TikTok, and they agreed: It's the platform they go to now when searching for anything, from the highest-rated beauty products and clothing trends to the best restaurants in the area or recipes to try”Gen Z prioritizes authenticity and utility which is one of the reasons why they like the visual representation with more real-world application “Social channels have become brands' digital storefronts, and the content shared on them is the cornerstone of building a modern brand. MERCEDES LAUNCHES SALES OF THE EQE WITH A SMALLER BATTERY Mercedes-Benz now offers further variants of its electric model EQE. The new price list of 5 July lists a total of six variants, including the new entry-level EQE 300 and the EQE 350, both of which are equipped with a slightly smaller 89 kWh battery. The battery in the previous EQE 350+ and above (i.e. the EQE 500 4MATIC and the two AMG models) comes with a usable energy content of 90.56 kWh. The base list price for the EQE 300 in Germany is 66,402 euros, the EQE 350 costs at least 70,210 euros. Above that, the EQE 350 4MATIC (with a system output of 215 kW like the rear-wheel drive) costs 73,363.50 euros and the EQE 500 4MATIC with 300 kW costs 87,286.50 euros. orders for the second AMG variant of the EQE were also opened a few days ago. This means that six drive variants of the EQE are currently available to order. Original Source: https://www.electrive.com/2022/07/08/mercedes-launches-sales-of-the-eqe-with-a-smaller-battery/ VOLVO QUITS EUROPE CAR LOBBY GROUP AS EV SHIFT FRACTURES INDUSTRY "Volvo Cars AB is withdrawing from Europe's car lobby, the second major automaker to do so in the past month, as the industry fractures over the transition to electric vehicles. Volvo Cars, which aims to produce only EVs by 2030, said Friday that the ACEA lobby's efforts to combat climate change aren't aggressive enough. The company said it was “better to take a different path for now.” Original Source: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-07-08/volvo-cars-quits-lobby-group-as-ev-shift-fractures-industry#xj4y7vzkg TESLA MODEL 3 RANKED GREENEST EV IN THE US, LUCID AIR COMES SECOND “The Tesla Model 3 tops this year's Bloomberg Green's Electric Car Ratings of the greenest EVs available in the United States. The Green rating for each car is a weighted score of its range divided by curb weight plus battery size, on a scale from 0 to 100 (100 being the best rating). The efficiency makes up 70% of the score, while battery size makes up 30%. Lucid took second place despite having one of the biggest battery in the ranking, with a usable capacity of 112 kWh; the Air's battery capacity is only topped by the Rivian R1S and R1T (129 kWh) and GMC Hummer EV (205 kWh). The Lucid Air does compensate with the highest EPA range of all the vehicles in the list (451 miles for the Dream Edition Performance) and the highest charging speed (20.1 miles per minute)." Original Source: https://insideevs.com/news/596828/tesla-model-3-ranked-greenest-ev-us-lucid-air-comes-second/ GERMANY TAKES BIG STEP TOWARDS INTEGRATING ELECTRIC CARS INTO GRID German parliament has empowered the federal network agency to define the framework for implementing electric vehicles (EVs) into the grid, using them as remote batteries to balance electricity demand. Using EVs as remote batteries is a long-held dream by the German electrical grid community. The technology is usually known as “vehicle-to-grid” and allows the batteries built into EVs to be drawn on in peak electricity demand. Germany's power grid is in dire need of upgrade to ensure stable supply in a country aiming to source 80% of its electricity from intermittent wind and solar by 2030. Meanwhile, the German government has begun providing additional funding for further research on the switch to EVs and their integration into the electricity grid. Original Source: https://www.euractiv.com/section/batteries/news/germany-takes-big-step-towards-integrating-electric-cars-into-grid/ THE ROAD AHEAD FOR ELECTRIC CARS RELIES ON AFFORDABILITY, NOT SCRAPPING GRANTS "Since 2011, the UK government has been providing a tax-payer funded discount on the sale of battery electric vehicles. Known as the “plug-in car grant”, it was designed to help persuade motorists make the switch from diesel or petrol and commit to electric driving. But last month the grant was scrapped with immediate effect. It wasn't exactly a surprise, given that the amount buyers were able to claim back had gradually been whittled down from £5,000 to £1,500; or that it was recently available only for new vehicles costing less than £32,000. For now, the government is essentially saying it will switch towards supporting the charging infrastructure and company car buyers. Unsurprisingly, the government's latest moves have not gone down well with a car industry struggling in a difficult economic climate. And nor should the government forget the economic challenges for drivers of soaring petrol prices and the rising cost of living. If it wants more of them to make the switch to electric vehicles, it should be much more focused on making them an affordable option for as many motorists as possible." https://theconversation.com/the-road-ahead-for-electric-cars-relies-on-affordability-not-scrapping-grants-186176 LIKE GM, FORD WILL SOON RUN OUT OF EV TAX CREDITS "General Motors reached the 200,000-vehicle cap to receive federal plug-in hybrid and electric vehicle tax credits back in early 2019, while its rivals over at Toyota also recently reached the milestone. Now Ford is also set to trigger the tax credit sunset period, with the Blue Oval reporting sales of roughly 180,000 electrified vehicles since 2009. The federal tax credit cap takes into account not only battery-electric vehicle sales, but also sales of plug-in hybrids with 4 kWh or larger. Ford had sold roughly 160,000 vehicles that meet this criteria as of the end of last year, our sister site Ford Authority reported this week. The automaker has also sold a reported 22,342 battery-electric vehicles in the first six months of 2022 between the F-150 Lightning, Mustang Mach-E and E-Transit, which would bring the total to 182,342 vehicles. This does not count sales of PHEV models like the Escape Hybrid and Explorer Hybrid, either, which would push Ford even closer to the 200,000 unit cap" Original Source: https://gmauthority.com/blog/2022/07/like-gm-ford-will-soon-run-out-of-ev-tax-credits/ ZIPCHARGE GO SEES OVER 10,000 GLOBAL PRE-ORDERS "ZipCharge, a pioneer in portable energy and electric vehicle (EV) charging, has announced that over 10,000 people have registered to pre-order a Go portable EV power bank when they go on sale in 2023. The company's engineers are currently optimising the performance of the portable EV charger's key system components - including the NMC lithium-ion battery cells and the ZipCharge-designed bi-directional AC-DC converter - in order to evaluate thermal behaviour, charging performance, safety, durability and full functionality to ensure a seamless and safe ownership experience for everyday charging." Original Source: https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/9356/zipcharge-go-10000-pre-orders/ MAZDA MX-30 SALES DECREASED IN JUNE: 23 UNITS SOLD "Mazda's only all-electric model, the Mazda MX-30, noted just 23 sales in June and 316 so far this year, which makes us wonder whether there is any sense to develop a new model? Low volume prevents offsetting development costs. The MSRP of $33,470 (+$1,175 DST), after deducting the $7,500 federal tax credit, means that the effective cost might be $27,145 - that's comparable to the new 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EV/EUV, which however has almost a two times bigger battery for more than twice as much range. Range: up to 100 miles (161 km) EPA, 35.5 kWh battery pack, 30kWh useable (prismatic cells, total nominal voltage of 355 V). DC fast charging (CCS Combo) 20-80% in about 36 minutes, 37kW peak rate." Thomas appreciates the build quality and materials of the interior, and also points out some cool interior features such as the dual 12.3-inch widescreen displays, sliding center console, electric storage compartment at the center of the dash, wooden capacitive climate controls and rearview mirror digital function. The range achieved by Thomas in good weather conditions and on fairly flat terrain is more that 450 kilometers or almost 280 miles, and that's with the standard battery." Is it a backlog due to supply chain issues or a new giant battery is in the work? A Twitter user going by OttoPilot flew over Gigafactory Nevada and spotted an impressive number of Tesla Megapacks outside the factory. We see more than 500 Megapacks in this picture, which would represent up to 1.5 GWh of energy capacity. That's more than Tesla has ever delivered in an entire quarter all sitting in one place. However, it's not clear why all those battery packs are there. Tesla produces the Megapacks at Gigafactory Nevada, along with its new Megafactory in California, but it's not clear why these many Megapacks are sitting there." The 2022 GMC Hummer EV continues the excessive ways of the H1 and H2. The difference is, this fully electric version with 329 miles of range is stuffed with technology. Four-wheel steering, Crabwalking, 60 miles-an-hour Watts to Freedom sprints in three seconds plus an air suspension that gives it 16 inches of ground clearance. Tom Voelk travels to Phoenix, AZ to try it all with an Edition 1 Hummer EV pickup. Plus the latest version of Super Cruise handsfree driving.
Every year the SAE Foundation chooses a recipient for its Leadership Award. This year it chose GM President Mark Reuss. At the awards banquet, Reuss sat down with Autoline to talk about his career, GM's transition to electric vehicles, and the challenges that lie ahead for the automotive industry.

Show #1407 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of information. It's Thursday 17th March, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. FORD F-150 LIGHTNING EPA RANGE NUMBERS EMERGE: UP TO 320 MILES - The long-awaited EPA range and efficiency numbers for the upcoming Ford F-150 Lightning all-electric pickup finally emerged, but not yet on the EPA's website, but via Monroney Stickers, shared on f150gen14.com forum. - According to four Monroney Stickers, shown for Pro (SR and ER), Lariat (ER) and Platinum (ER) versions, Ford achieved the 230-mile target for the SR and beat the ER target by 20 miles, achieving 320 miles. - Pro 18"(SR): 230 miles (370 km)(ER - fleets): 320 miles (515 km) - Lariat 20"(SR): N/A (potentially the same as Pro SR)(ER): 320 miles (515 km) - Platinum 22"(ER): 300 miles (483 km) - An interesting thing is that the ER battery versions (aside from Platinum) get 320 miles, compared to 314 miles of Rivian R1T. Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/574208/ford-f150-lightning-epa-range/ FORD CEO FARLEY SAYS AUTOMAKER SOLD OUT OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES - As soon as CEO Jim Farley said the words, they hit the Twittersphere: "We are sold out for a couple years now," he said. On stage for a CERAWeek energy conference discussion streamed live March 10 from Texas - The moderator asked: How are things going with the Mustang Mach-E? - "It's totally sold out. We're just completely overwhelmed. I mean, we have the chip supply thing, that makes it worse. But we're completely oversubscribed," he said. "Actually, in all of our electric vehicles, we are sold out for a couple years now. So we're very fortunate that we made that choice to go into those passion products." - "We were lucky. We got to watch from a distance what happened at Tesla and the first generation of leaders like BMW and GM. They went first, and Nissan, and Tesla won and the generic products didn't," Farley said. - "What we learned from that as a management team, which was actually not popular in the company, was that early adopters of zero emission wanted the good stuff," he said. "They don't want generic homogeneous small cars that are unremarkable. They want great vehicles. They want aspirational vehicles ... And so we said, 'let's electrify the icons.' " - The automaker has been so overwhelmed by orders for its award-winning Mach-E that it has had to stop taking orders for the 2022 model because many are sold out.Not all versions, but many. - When the 2023 Mach-E order bank opens, deliveries are scheduled to begin as soon as late 2022. While Ford expects 2022 Mach-Es to be delivered to customers before the new model year begins shipping, global supply chain and semiconductor chip issues could continue to disrupt the delivery schedules - In January, Ford announced it would nearly double production capacity to 150,000 Lightning pickups per year at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn to meet "soaring customer demand," - Within 24 months, Ford will have the global capacity to produce 600,000 battery electric vehicles annually with plans to move toward annual production of more than 2 million EVs by 2026." - Van Conway, president of the Young Conway Group, a turnaround consultancy for businesses based in Detroit, said executives routinely get consumers excited when products are so popular they're in limited supply."Ferrari sells out every year, too," Conway told the Free Press. "When you say you're sold out, you actually get people more interested in getting one. Maybe they're not sold out tomorrow, but they are sold out today." There's a view from every angle when the driver pulls the vehicle off the street to turn around. - All of the production panels appear to be on the body, so the covering is the only thing hiding the vehicle's design. - In front, the Spectre has split headlights that include LED strips on the upper section. Because EVs don't need the same airflow as combustion-powered vehicles, it's not clear whether the large grille is actually functional. - There are vertically oriented taillights on each corner of the rear. - A recent rumour suggests it would share components with the BMW iX M60 electric crossover. If this is accurate, then a coupe could make as much as 610 bhp - In the iX M60, this setup gets the crossover to 60 miles per hour (96 kilometres per hour) in 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph (250 kph). Its 111.5-kilowatt-hour battery pack gives the BMW a WLTP-estimated range of 352 miles (566 kilometres). Show #1403 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of information. It's Sunday 13th March, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. GMC HUMMER EV FLIPS ARE ALREADY GETTING OUT OF HAND - The GMC Hummer EV may be an all-new offering, but plenty of people are willing to part with their hard-earned cash to experience the new electric pickup before anyone else. In fact, demand has been so strong that, in December, we already reported on 60,000 preorders. - With all this crazy interest in the vehicle, it's no surprise that some early reservation holders are now looking to make a quick buck, but the scale of the markups we're seeing lately is just mindblowing. - some people are offering up the Edition 1 for as much as $325,000. Keep in mind that, although an $80,000 version is coming as a base model, the Edition 1 is not much more expensive and is supposed to sell for around $105,000. That means that these new markups are reaching as much as triple the original asking price, which is arguably worse than what some supercar dealers will do. - a quick Google search reveals that $300,000 resale prices are more common than not. Heck, The Drive cites Hummer Chat forum users selling reservation slots, which cost $100 direct from GM at release, for as much as $60,000, while the same forum has Edition 1s selling for upwards of $262k. For a truck not yet delivered. Insane seems too weak a word to describe this phenomenon. The company will deploy smaller factories producing between 3 GW and 15 GW of battery cells, which can be installed in a manner of weeks to meet demand. - According to AFB, the company's batteries will perform at least 10,000 discharge cycles with a 20-30 year lifespan. The products will be designed for storage systems on the utility- and residential-scale level, as well as military uses and certain large electric vehicles like trucks, buses and trams. SAIC aims to lift sales of new-energy vehicles to more than 2.7 million units in 2025, a 270% increase from 2021. - Q: What are the company's medium-term plans?A: Plans call for investing 300 billion yuan over the five years through 2025 in new-energy vehicles, connected cars and the smart segment. We will transform into a high-tech company oriented toward the customer.Sales of new-energy vehicles will be increased to more than 2.7 million units annually in 2025. Our company plans to raise the percentage of new-energy vehicles to overall sales to at least 32%. - We aim to become China's top company in autonomous driving tech, reaching mass production of Level 4 vehicles. My car is in my garage. I can't move it because I have no money.” - Saba, a 70-year-old retiree, used to drive to the mall. He doesn't go in any of the shops or restaurants – he just likes to sit in the comfy armchairs and chat with his friends. - But the bus takes too long, and is too expensive. So he called a friend, who picked him up. - “In the US we really saw an increase in automobile use in the post-world war two period, the baby boom generation. At that point in time, we had this new availability of relatively inexpensive mass-produced automobiles, this is the first time that people from middle income households can purchase a motor vehicle,” said Gregory Rowangould, the director of the Transportation Research Center at the University of Vermont and an associate professor in civil and environmental engineering. - The construction and planning of these new suburbs rarely included viable bus or train options. Many new neighborhoods didn't have walkable amenities either. Now, people needed cars to go shopping, or take their kids to the swimming pool, and certainly to get to work. - It's a legacy that has endured. Americans drive much, much more than other nationalities. - In 2019 American motorists drove an average of 14,263 miles a year, according to the US Department of Transportation. That puts the US at the top of the list in terms of miles driven, and it isn't even close. In the next highest country, Canada, people drove an average of 9,562 miles a year in 2018. The average car in the UK was driven for 7,134 miles in 2019. - Meanwhile some experts have suggested the spike in prices could serve as a wake-up call for the public and politicians to move away from a reliance on oil, and towards greener transport methods. - With gas prices unlikely to fall anytime soon, a shift away from America's car dependency, and serious investment in public transport would not just benefit the environment, but also the millions of Americans who are struggling financially. Original Source : https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/mar/13/us-car-vehicle-expenses-rise HOW TO MAKE DEALERSHIPS THE NO. 1 RESOURCE FOR EV BUYERS - With electric vehicles (EVs) lining up on the horizon and zooming into the nearest local showroom, auto dealers are preparing today to serve the EV customer of tomorrow by investing in training, education, infrastructure and, most importantly, positioning themselves as EV retail experts and resources for these new buyers. - The idea that dealerships don't want to sell EVs is ridiculous, said NADA Academy Director Michael Hayes. “We're selling a transportation solution that someone wants and meets their needs,” he said. “If I'm a dealer, I'm in the EV business. Every dealer, I truly believe, will sell EVs [and] wants to sell EVs, if that's what our customers want.” - So what can dealers do to make sure that customers know that? Chris Neff, EV Dealer Training Specialist with Plug In America suggested dealers attend drive events throughout the country, including National Drive Electric Week. “That's where EV folks gather and share information and they're always looking for dealers to come,” he said. - Knowing a buyer's lifestyle and motivation for buying an EV is a great opportunity for dealers to provide information that buyers will value, said Chris Potgeiter, Product Marketing Manager at automotiveMastermind. For example, if the EV buyer is a homeowner, a dealer might mention an in-home charging station. If the buyer is an apartment dweller, direct them to local charging stations near them. Maybe the buyer has expressed frustration over being a frequent visitor to the service department. A dealer can point out that an EV has fewer moving parts that could break and can offer a new level of reliability. Original Source : https://blog.nada.org/2022/03/12/how-to-make-dealerships-the-no-1-resource-for-ev-buyers/ DEALERS: GET IN LINE TO GET ELECTRIFIED, SAYS E-MOBILITY EXPERT - Dealerships that want to go all-in on electrification are in a race—a race for load capacity, according to Sean Gouda, Executive Vice President, Future Energy. - The main issue is utility upgrades are long-term capital projects that can take up to five years to complete. Distribution circuits have only so much capacity available. Utilities must install new lines, and upgrade transformers and substations. Coupled with the increase demand for electrification and the approaching fleet of EVs, dealers are facing potential electrical gridlock. - Gouda also recommended that dealers who are installing EV infrastructure, such as transformers and panels, take a long-term view when it comes to planning. “Everything you build should have a modular capability to it. You want to future-proof these components and build the foundation to expand your business in EVs. Spend the money now … to electrify your business for five or even 10 years from now.” Original Source : https://blog.nada.org/2022/03/11/dealers-get-in-line-to-get-electrified-says-e-mobility-expert/ BMW IX5 HYDROGEN - HOW DOES IT COMPARE TO A BATTERY-POWERED ELECTRIC VEHICLE? Set to go on sale with an MSRP of around $30,000, the compact Equinox SUV will be a bargain by EV standards. Despite that, big screens and fancy technology will still be present, suggesting that Chevrolet is taking its transition to electric vehicles seriously. Bidirectional charging capabilities offer a higher level of electric resiliency and less reliability on the grid, especially during peak times. - The pilot includes the use of bidirectional hardware that's paired with software-defined communications protocols that will enable power to flow from a charged EV battery into a customer's home. The software will automatically coordinate between the EV, home and PG&E's electric supply from the street. - The pilot will test bidirectional power technology with multiple GM EVs. - Last month, Ford announced a partnership with San Francisco-based Sunrun, a provider of residential solar panels and home batteries that allows Ford F-150 Lightning owners to use their truck's substantial battery reserves as a home's emergency power source. - To use Ford's Intelligent Backup Power, customers will need to install the Ford Charge Station Pro and Home Integration System, which includes a power inverter plus a dark start battery and transfer switch, enabling two-way power flow between the home and vehicle. This caused the computer to think the car still had 10% of range left when in reality the main battery was already at 0%. - When the main battery died, the 12V Li-Ion battery was also dying Original Source : https://driveteslacanada.ca/software-updates/tesla-deploys-emergency-software-update-2022-4-5-12-to-calibrate-lfp-batteries TESLA CONFIRMS DELIVERIES OF GERMAN-BUILT MODEL YS ARE STARTING ON MARCH 22 - Tesla has confirmed that deliveries of Model Y vehicles built at Gigafactory Berlin in Germany are starting on March 22. - Last week, after months of delays, Tesla finally received its official building permit following the environmental approval of its Gigafactory Berlin project. - However, the approval was conditional on about 400 different conditions that the automaker needed to confirm. Surprisingly, German officials said at the time that they expected Tesla to fulfill all those conditions within the next two weeks. - March 22 will mark an important step for Tesla by starting deliveries of European-made vehicles and putting it on a path of better logistical efficiency. This would allow the public water supply to be maintained, the Ministry of the Environment told the DPA. - On Friday evening, the Administrative Court of Frankfurt (Oder) had declared the water permit issued in 2020 “unlawful and unenforceable”. - In a first reaction, the Straußberg-Erkner Water Association (WSE) had demanded that the state tolerate the water pumping until the procedure was made up for. - However, the 1.4 million cubic metres of water actually contractually guaranteed by the WSE for Tesla would only be needed when the carmaker in Grünheide has actually reached its full capacity of 500,000 cars per year. When that will be the case is still unclear. FORD DEALERS WILL FINALLY BE FORCED TO LEARN ABOUT ELECTRIC VEHICLES - In the wake of the decision to split its EV and gasoline vehicle divisions, Ford has announced that its dealers will need to "opt-in" to selling EVs along with normal combustion cars, according to Automotive News. - While the company has no apparent plans to create new dealers or work outside its network of roughly 3,100 existing retail stores, Ford CEO Jim Farley said in an interview that dealers should "get ready to specialize." - Dealers that currently sell the Mustang Mach-E, E-Transit, and are anticipating inventory of the new F-150 Lightning can continue selling them for the next year and a half. - The new dealer agreement isn't finalized yet, but Ford executives have made clear they hope for a no-inventory, direct-order model, as well as non-negotiable pricing and smaller facilities for dealers. - Tesla, one of Ford's main EV competitors, works off of a direct sale model, which Farley estimates helps Tesla save almost $2,000 per vehicle. But he added that "not everything can be done remote" and that Ford still understands the importance of brick-and-mortar dealerships in customer satisfaction. According to Ford Authority, who site sources "familiar with the matter", the Blue Oval will not take any new orders for Premium and California Route 1 trim levels for the remained of the 2022 model year. - Mach-E buyers will only be able to get the Extended Range battery by buying the $61,995 GT. The Select trim only comes with the Standard Range pack, although you can get it in either RWD or AWD guise. - The ongoing semiconductor shortage likely played a key role in Ford's decision. The marque has already experienced production issues this year. Last month Mach-E production was temporarily halted due to supply chain issues. CAM is a key battery material consisting of components like processed nickel, lithium and other materials making up about 40% of the cost of a battery cell. - By the end of 2025, GM plans to have capacity to build 1 million electric vehicles in North America. The company targets the majority of components by value to be sustainably sourced, processed or manufactured in North America. Its abrupt price surge has analysts and investors raising hard questions about automakers' ambitious electric-vehicle programs. - When the battery cell is charged, lithium ions are driven from the cathode to the anode. As the cell is discharged, the ions move back to the cathode, releasing energy. In recent years, automakers have discovered that adding more nickel to the cathode can boost a battery's energy density, which translates into more range per pound of batteries. - Some use even more, in part to reduce or eliminate cobalt, and in part to increase density for premium applications: The cathodes in cells that Korean battery giant LG Chem supplies to Tesla are 90% nickel, for instance. - Given the relatively high cost of nickel, and the concerns about supply that were being voiced before Russia invaded Ukraine, automakers have signaled that lithium-ion batteries with high-nickel cathodes are likely to be limited to premium applications. The emissions can cause respiratory problems in humans. - Although truck manufacturers are working on battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cell powertrains, the EPA says the proposal is not a zero-emissions truck requirement. Rather, the agency says there are pollution control devices in development that can keep diesels in use and still clean the air. - Environmental groups praised the EPA's action, but many urged the administration to move quickly on the proposal and then go farther toward requiring zero-emissions trucks. - The new standards would bring widespread air quality improvements, particularly in areas already exposed to heavy truck traffic, officials say. It reduces the upfront cost of buying a two-wheeler, eliminates the range anxiety and the apprehensions about the useful life of the batteries. It certainly makes a lot of sense for the B2B customers as the swapping stations can be placed in the working zones for the riders to allow them to run their bikes without waiting for the recharging of the batteries.” Original Source : https://www.electrive.com/2022/03/07/hero-electric-sun-mobility-partner-up-for-battery-swapping-in-india/ BRAND NEW SIX-FIGURE TESLA MODEL X DELIVERED WITH MISMATCHED TIRES Original Source : https://www.motortrend.com/news/tesla-model-x-mismatched-tires-delivery/ PEUGEOT REACHES OVER 1000 E-LCV SALES ALREADY IN 2022 Original Source : https://electriccarsreport.com/2022/03/peugeot-reaches-over-1000-e-lcv-sales-already-in-2022/ ENDING THE UK'S DEPENDENCE ON RUSSIAN DIESEL Original Source : https://newautomotive.org/blog/ending-dependence-on-russian-diesel TESLA SUPERCHARGER FEE GAFFE RESULTS IN MODEL 3 OWNER TEMPORARILY GETTING $600K BILL Original Source : https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-supercharger-fee-600k-gaffe-china/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM Do you think rising fuel prices at the pumps will have a direct impact on EV sales?
