Volkswagen is cutting bait, and unfortunately, the Arteon is going to end up on the cutting room floor after 2024. Still, the short-lived nameplate showed that VW can churn out stylish sedans. Joining VW dealerships in 2019, the Arteon sat atop the VW hierarchy despite sedans losing ground to luxe crossovers and SUVs. However, after slowing sales, Volkswagen formally announced in 2023 that it would be exiting the portfolio. This 2023 VW Arteon packs a 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 under the hood that sends 300 hp and 295 through a seven-speed automatic transmission and into either the front wheels or the 4Motion all-wheel-drive system. On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren hops behind the wheel of the '23 VW Arteon and puts it through its paces. Wren takes you on a guided tour of the Arteon and highlights some of his favorite and least favorite features before taking you along on a live drive review. Adding to those thoughts, Wren chats with Autoweek executive editor Tom Murphy about the Arteon. The pair talk about why VW is discontinuing the Arteon, the car's sales performance, and the future of sedans in the marketplace. Closing the show, the pair breaks down what makes the Arteon special.

The Acura Integra is back and in many ways better than ever. And we test the performance-oriented A-Spec version in this episode of “America on the Road.” The Integra was a mainstay of the Acura lineup from the day the brand was introduced in 1986 until the Integra was discontinued 20 years later. Now, as Acura turns its back on its alpha naming system, the Integra has returned as a five-door hatchback with driving enjoyment as its key calling card. In A-Spec form, the 2023 Acura Integra features its first-ever turbocharged engine, 18-inch alloy wheels, and the availability of a six-speed manual transmission with rev-matching capability. Of course, there is plenty of tech as well, like the 10.2-inch digital instrumentation display and the adaptive damper suspension system. And the Integra A-Spec looks the part with stainless steel pedals, red gauge needles and contrast stitching on the steering wheel, console, shift boot plus a leather-wrapped aluminum shift knob. In the news segment, we examine the contention that electric cars will be less trouble-prone and need less service than conventional gasoline cars. Many pundits have made that claim, but a new study from Consumer Reports says quite the opposite is true. We'll have our thoughts on all that coming up. Also in the news, is there a “Silent Majority” of top car company execs that believes that pursuing electric vehicles to the exclusion of conventional vehicles is a giant mistake? One prominent global executive certainly thinks so, and in this edition, we'll tell you who that is and why he believes it. Our guest host, EV expert Matt DeLorenzo, will weigh in on that as well. DeLorenzo is the author of the new book How To Buy an Affordable Electric Car: A Tightwad's Guide to EV Ownership and a longtime industry observer. In a special segment this week, he and AOTR Host Jack Nerad will take a long look at the assertion by some climatologists that the accelerating move to electric vehicles is not the right solution to climate issues. In fact it could be a multi-trillion-dollar mistake. Nerad is the author of The Complete Idiot's Guide to Hybrid and Alternative Fuel Vehicles in addition to his latest novel, Dance in the Dark. In the road test segment, Matt DeLorenzo will detail his recent experiences in one of the biggest “sleeper values” on the sedan market today — the Volkswagen Arteon. The highly styled and well-equipped Arteon deserves more attention than it has received, and we'll tell you why.

The Genesis G80 sits in the middle of the Genesis sedan lineup: below its top-rung G90 and above the sporty G70. Even though sedans aren't as popular as the increasingly-in-demand crossover and SUV segments, Genesis gave its G80 a second generation in 2020. This second-gen G80 updates the car's styling to the current Genesis design language and streamlined the engine options. The G80, in the US, sports either a 2.5-liter turbocharged I4 or a 3.5-liter turbocharged V6. Both engines feed a standard eight-speed automatic. Volkswagen might be thinning its sedan herd, but it's not bowing out completely. Volkswagen's Arteon is the company's flagship sedan, and lives up to the task. Blending the current VW design language with a sleek sedan body, the Arteon looks like the rest of the VW lineup while still etching out its own distinct style. Powering the Arteon is exclusively a 300 hp, 2.0-liter turbocharged I4, which feeds a seven-speed automatic transmission. The Arteon might not have the same luxury cache as, say, an Audi, but the sleek Arteon is far from basic. On this bonus episode of Quick Spin, Natalie Neff talks with Wesley Wren about her time with these two stylish sedans. The two discuss the features of each car and chat about each car's space in the world. Expanding on these cars, the two dissect the shrinking sedan segment and talk about dire future for sedans.

Schnittig, kantig - eben was ganz eigenes - der Skoda ENYAQ in freier WIldbahn! / Bild-Quelle: privat PodCast abonnieren: | direkt | iTunes | Spotify | Google | amazon | PROUDLY RECORDED AND PRODUCED WITH Ultraschall5 Folge direkt herunterladen

The refreshed 2021 Volkswagen Arteon adds elements of driver assistance, connectivity, and refinement.  As a result, Arteon continues its this/closeness to luxury sibling brand Audi.  But the midsize flagship sedan does so while maintaining the Volkswagen pricing creating an attractive value proposition. ✅  The latest Arteon deals and incentives –> check inventory at Ontario Volkswagen 2021 VW Arteon Top-3: Design Interior Technology Because at under $37k starting price it's hard to beat the overall package Volkswagen Arteon offers. 268 hp & 258 lb-ft of torque 2021 Volkswagen Arteon Review Because no other European luxury brand has a non-luxury sibling VW is special.  And thanks go to Audi for sure.  But Porsche and other brands owned by Volkswagen Group too.  So, when you consider the available technology and innovation easily accessible to Volkswagen.  It's easy to understand how the carmakers packs so much into it's flagship sedan. First, it's exceptional design - inside and out.  Plus Volkswagen's reknown attention to fit and finish details.  And class leading technology.  Arteon looks great.  It's fun to drive, quick and offers superior handling.  And it includes Volkswagen's Digital cockpit which is a direct carryover from Audi. Trims And Prices For '21 Arteon is offered in three trim configurations.  Starting with the base-model SE.  Next is the SEL R-Line.  And the top trim for 2021 is the SEL Premium R-Line. 2021 Volkswagen Arteon Trims & MSRPS: Base-model SE $36,995 SEL R-Line $41,595 SEL Premium R-Line $46,995 As an reference I provide manufacturers suggested retail pricing.  But go see my friends at Ontario VW for not only your best price and selection but also your best buying experience. Engines, Transmissions, And MPG No matter which trim configuration, Arteon comes with the same engine and transmission.  But the factor you do have to weigh into the equation is front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.  And VW's AWD system is referred to as 4Motion. So the engine is an inline 2.0-liter 4-cylinder that's turbocharged.  And it puts out 268 horsepower with 258 pound-feet of torque.  That engine is paried with an 8-speed automatic transmission. EPA rated up to 32 mpg Leaving the FWD or 4Motion decision.  But, FWD is the only option on the SE trim.  The SEL R-Line offers both FWD and 4Motion.  And the SEL Premium R-Line only comes with the 4Motion. Fuel economy varies only a little.  Because AWD gives you 20 mpg in the city and 31 on the highway.  Whereas FWD will deliver 22 in the city and 32 on the highway. Finally, Arteon's curbweight also varies slightly due to FWD or AWD.  With FWD it's 3,686 and with AWD it's 3,955. What Does 2021 VW Arteon Look Like? Arteon's styling is undeniably attractive.  But it's also undeniably a Volkswagen.  And, you could say, it's undeniably the Volkswagen flagship sedan.  Because there's no bad angle when viewing the vehicle. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Škoda starts series production of all-electric Enyaq Škoda has started series production of its all-electric Enyaq iV model based on MEB. Up to 350 units of the e-SUV will eventually be produced daily at Škoda’s main plant in Mladá Boleslav on the same lines as the Octavia and Karoq model series containing combustion engines." according to electrive, writing about the potential for 120,000 of these a year from this plant: "The Enyaq iV is the first MEB-based electric car in the Volkswagen Group build outside of VW’s Zwickau plant in Germany. The ID.3 and ID.4 are currently being assembled there, with derivatives of the Audi Q4 e-tron and the Cupra el-Born to be added later. Other MEB plants in Europe are not scheduled to begin until 2022, such as Emden as the second plant for the ID.4, and the VW commercial vehicles plant in Hanover for the production version of the ID. Buzz."   In comparison at the VW plant in Germany already making the ID.3 and ID.4 they have production capacity of 750 a day, or 5,250 a week. Over a 48 week year (allowing for one week shutdown per quarter) that's 252,000 VW brand cars from just that one factory.   https://www.electrive.com/2020/11/26/skoda-starts-series-production-of-all-electric-enyaq/     VW Speeds Up Work on Small Electric Car "Volkswagen AG is accelerating development of a compact electric car that will cost less than 30,000 euros ($35,800) as tightening emissions rules and generous subsidies bolster sales of battery-powered vehicles, according to people familiar with the matter. The VW-branded car may be introduced as early as 2022" writes Bloomberg today: "To free up funds for the industry’s biggest electric-car offensive, VW will take more steps to shrink its portfolio of combustion-engine cars after already culling models including the Beetle and the Scirocco. It will discontinue the mid-sized Passat sedan in the U.S. and sell only the station-wagon version in Europe, the people said. VW may also phase out the upscale Arteon coupe, they said."   https://www.bloomberg.com/amp/news/articles/2020-11-27/vw-speeds-up-work-on-small-electric-car-culls-combustion-models   How the US plans to turn all its iconic school buses electric "The US school bus is a cultural icon. With its distinctive yellow livery, this design classic has inhabited the roads of North America in various forms since 1939, and the region is unique in having a fleet of dedicated buses for transporting school students. Most other areas use ordinary public-service buses for the school runs. On average 480,000 yellow buses carry upwards of 25 million children to school on a daily basis in the US." says Electric Hybrid Vehicle Technology website, the problem is, they're dirty diesel: "poor air quality has been proven to be responsible for high rates of asthma, cancer, and heart disease; and research by scientists at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health has shown that just a small increase in fine-particulate pollution, such as that from the diesel engines of school buses, results in a 15 percent increase in the death rate due to COVID-19. . President Elect Joe Biden’s Build Back Better plan for creating a more resilient, sustainable economy proposes making all American-made buses zero-emission by 2030, starting with the school bus fleet, which would convert within five years."   The buses are currently made in Alabama, California, Georgia, Indiana, Minnesota, New York, and both North & South Carolina.   There is an unusual bias in the U.S., so far in 2020 there were 40,714 school buses registered and 5,402 city buses.   A problem is the price, 350k compared to 100k for diesel. TCO is not as powerful because they do so few miles.   https://www.electrichybridvehicletechnology.com/opinion/how-the-us-plans-to-turn-all-its-iconic-school-buses-electric.html   VW's EV boss discusses the move to electrification "Thomas Ulbrich, Volkswagen Group's e-mobility boss, has spent two years overseeing VW's move to electrification. Ulbrich discussed the challenges of refitting eight of the automaker's global plants to build full-electric cars"   On retooling for the ID.3: "We converted the plant virtually during ongoing operations. In one half of the plant, we were still building full numbers of combustion engines when we started with the electric vehicles in the other half. But in the end, everything worked despite the enormous challenges that the coronavirus pandemic demands of all of us"   On the MEB platform: " Even at the development stage, we designed the platform in such a way that we have far-reaching synergies through identical parts for different vehicles and different models. This time, we made sure that the concept of the bodies was identical across all brands, so that we had sufficiently differentiated vehicles in terms of design, but which we could still build on one assembly line."   On expansion: "The two plants in China, Anting and Foshan, will start up this year. The same applies to Skoda's production in Mlada Boleslav in the Czech Republic. Dresden in Germany will follow at the beginning of 2021, Emden and Hanover, aso in Germany, in 2022. In the second half of 2022, Chattanooga will also start up in the U.S."   On scale: "Our goal is to build 1 million EVs for the Volkswagen brand alone in 2023 and to achieve global output of 1.5 million by 2025. The MEB-based vehicles of the other group brands will then be added."   On how important the ID.4 is: "It is particularly important at the start of our electric offensive that we serve the volume segments. That's the best way to achieve economies of scale and make full use of our plants. And the ID4 will be our volume driver, which, with 500,000 units, will account for a third of our global EV sales in 2025."   https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/vws-ev-boss-discusses-move-electrification+   China's SAIC Motor Launches New Electric-Vehicle Project "SAIC Motor Corp. has initiated a new project to produce high-end electric vehicles, the latest expansion move by Chinese car makers enticed by a rosy outlook for new-energy vehicles. SAIC, one of China's largest car makers by sales volume, said Thursday that it has teamed up with a Shanghai company and Alibaba Group Holding to run the project called Zhi Ji." according to MorningStar.com: "Zhi Ji will launch luxurious electric-vehicle models, SAIC said, without providing details on the timeline, pricing or sales target. Alibaba's role is more of a technology provider for the project, a company spokeswoman said. The high-end NEV market in China is set to get crowded next year, with both foreign and domestic makers expected to launch more premium models"   https://www.morningstar.com/news/dow-jones/202011272280/chinas-saic-motor-launches-new-electric-vehicle-project   Cornwall to rollout 150 new EV chargers with £2.9m funding "Cornwall Council has secured £2.9 million in funding from the European Regional Development Fund to continue its electric vehicle (EV) charging rollout." says Current News: "A further £725,000 has been committed by the council to cover the remaining cost of the 150 chargers, which will be installed in a range of locations including council car parks and offices as well as in communities where there is currently limited chargepoint availability."   https://www.current-news.co.uk/news/cornwall-to-rollout-150-new-ev-chargers-with-2-9m-funding   New Opel Corsa-e Rally is Ready to Go The Opel Corsa-e Rally is the first all-electric rally car from a carmaker. The Blitz-badged electric vehicles will next year take part in their own one-make series – the ADAC Opel e-Rally Cup. Two complete rounds of the German Rally Championship (DRM) were rehearsed during the three-day test programme – including special stages, road sections and servicing. The unique features of electro-mobility, such as times spent driving and charging, temperature management of the battery and fine-tuning the software, were tested for the first time in a rally environment. Electric cars are gaining currency and the question before the hosts of America on the Road is will cars like the ElectraMeccanica Solo, a single-person transportation device, change the way we commute? And will it change the way we deliver pizzas? Those questions and more are considered in host Jack Nerad's exclusive interview with ElectraMeccanica CEO M. Paul Rivera. The interview came after Nerad had the opportunity to test drive the diminutive vehicle. In the road test segment co-host Chris Teague got the plum assignment of squiring around in the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe. With a price tag of $106,000 and a zero-to-60 time of 5.2 seconds, this is not your grandma's crossover SUV. Meanwhile, Nerad reviews Volkswagen's "halo car," the Arteon sedan. The Arteon brings coupe-like styling and a distinct European sensibility to the market. Though you've probably never heard of the sports sedan, there's a lot to like about it. In the news, we have international intrigue and a bid to create a utopia on a Greek island. The latter is an effort by Volkswagen Group to establish an electric vehicle paradise on a small island in the Mediterranean Sea, aided and abetted by the Greek government. We also take a look at fugitive auto executive Carlos Ghosn's new book that explains why he broke out of jail and fled Japan to go into exile in Lebanon among other tales from his colorful past.

The routes provide high-powered chargers to all EV brands, and on average, the stations are spaced about 70 miles apart, so EV owners can travel beyond a single charge without being stranded." writes Engadget: "The first route stretches over 2,700 miles from Washington DC to Los Angeles. It follows Interstates 15 and 70 and passes through 11 states. The second route will connect Jacksonville and San Diego. Electrify America already has routes along the East and West coasts, and with these new routes it will be even easier for EV owners to travel farther."   https://www.engadget.com/electrify-america-ev-charging-cross-country-route-185900913   TESLA INCREASES MODEL S AND X SUPERCHARGING RATE TO 225 KW "Tesla has increased the top Model S and X Supercharging rate to 225 kW through a software update, but it’s not clear which vehicles are going to be able to get the update." says electrek: "When Tesla launched Supercharger V3 last year, the automaker made it clear that only Model 3 would take full advantage of the new 250 kW charge rate. For Model S and Model X, Tesla said that an upgraded charge rate would be coming soon “through a software update” without specifying anything else. Later, Tesla updated the Model S and Model X charge rate to 200 kW. At this point, only very recent Model S and Model X vehicles seem to be getting the update."   https://electrek.co/2020/06/24/tesla-model-s-x-supercharging-rate-increase-225-kw/   VW PREMIERES TWO NEW EDITION ARTEON PHEVS "VW has just presented the new edition of the Arteon and revealed a second version: the Arteon Shooting Brake. Both models are offered as plug-in hybrids for the first time." reports electrive: "In terms of drive systems, Volkswagen is merely announcing that both body versions will be offered with a plug-in hybrid for the first time. “With the long purely electric range many Arteon eHybrid and Arteon Shooting Brake eHybrid drivers will be able to cover their daily driving distances with zero emissions locally,” writes VW. This will be the 160 kW PHEV from the Passat GTE, not the PHEV versions of the Golf 8 with 150 or 180 kW presented as ‘eHybrid’."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/06/24/vw-premieres-two-new-edition-arteon-phevs/   HYUNDAI, KIA AND LG CHEM LAUNCH GLOBAL COMPETITION TO INVEST IN EV AND BATTERY START-UPS With demand for EVs growing, Hyundai Motor Company, Kia Motors Corporation, and LG Chem are jointly sponsoring the “EV & Battery Challenge” (EVBC), a global competition to identify up to 10 EV and battery start-ups for potential investment and collaboration. New Energy Nexus, the international start-up support organization, will manage and facilitate the competition. The chosen start-ups will have the opportunity to work hand-in-hand with Hyundai, Kia, and LG Chem, to develop proof-of-concept projects while leveraging the sponsors’ technical expertise, resources and laboratories. The global competition offers start-ups the opportunity to showcase their respective innovative technologies and unique business models.     WORLD’S FIRST HIGH-POWER WIRELESS CHARGING FOR TAXIS USES JAGUAR I-PACE, IN OSLO "In Oslo, Norway, Jaguar I-Pace taxis will be charged wirelessly, in small high-power increments throughout the day (and night).  The project is being taken on by automaker Jaguar Land Rover and commercial wireless charging expert Momentum Dynamics, with help from charging operator Fortum Recharge and the taxi network Cabonline (NorgesTaxi AS)." according to Green Car Reports: "A team of engineers and technicians will fit Momentum Wireless high-power charging units to 25 Jaguar I-Pace electric SUVs to be used by the cab company, which is the largest taxi network in the Nordic countries. Through multiple charging plates set into a section of roadway near Oslo’s central train station used for the taxi queue, drivers can pull up to a painted line and, with the help of a guidance system in the vehicle, align with the charging plate at the bottom of the vehicle with the one in the roadway.  Without the need to plug in, or do any kind of handshake from a phone or fob or the vehicle screen, the inductive charging system will deliver charge to the car at up to 50 kw in bursts of 6-8 minutes, which will give the driver enough time to drop off existing passengers and take on new ones."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1128628_first-high-power-wireless-charging-jaguar-i-pace-taxis-oslo   POLESTAR 2 LEASE AND FINANCING DEALS COMPARED TO TESLA MODEL 3 "For comparison, you can lease a Tesla Model 3 for an estimated $371 per month for 36 months with $4,500 down. It covers 10,000 miles per year. This is for the Model 3 Standard Range Plus, which carries a starting price of $37,990. You can find this information on Tesla's website. The Polestar 2 costs over $20,000 more ($59,990). To lease it, you'll pay an estimated $649 per month for 36 months with $4,000 down, and you'll get 10,000 miles per year." says InsideEVs: "For comparison, if you were to choose the most expensive Model 3 Performance ($54,990), the 10,000-mile lease comes in at $620 per month, with $4,500 due at signing. If you'd rather finance, Polestar, like many other automakers, is currently offering 0% for 60 months. Tesla's current rate is 2.49%."   https://insideevs.com/features/430534/polestar-lease-deal-zero-apr-compared-tesla/   ABB SCORES MAJOR ORDER FROM GAC TOYOTA VIA CHARGEDOT "ABB has received a major order for charging infrastructure worth around five million US dollars through the Chinese charging specialist Chargedot: The Chinese manufacturing joint venture GAC Toyota is ordering several thousand AC wall boxes." writes electrive: "The joint venture GAC Toyota Motor, founded in 2004 and based in Guangzhou, currently only offers combustion engines and hybrid models, but the electric version of the C-HR is to be launched on the market before the end of this year. The Chargedot wallboxes with 7 kW charging power are also intended for this purpose and will be specially tailored to the needs of GAC Toyota. ABB said in a press release that Chargedot wallboxes for home charging will be distributed to electric car buyers through GAC Toyota’s dealer network."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/06/24/abb-scores-major-order-from-gac-toyota-via-chargedot/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   How would you like to see Green Plates or Green Stickers used to incentivize EVs?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 231 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #754   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 20th April 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   T&E FINDS BEV ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINT SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER THAN ICES "In Europe, an electric car is responsible for almost three times less CO2 over its life cycle than a comparable petrol or diesel car, Transport & Environment has determined and published a corresponding calculation tool." reports electrive: "Even in the worst case scenario, an electric car in Poland with a battery made in China emits 22 per cent less CO2 than a comparable diesel car and 28 per cent less than a gasoline car, according to T&E. The best case, according to T&E, would be an electric car with a battery made in Sweden, if the electric car was also driven in Sweden (i.e. charged with the electricity mix there). In this case, 80 per cent less CO2 was emitted compared to diesel and 81 per cent less compared to petrol.  The CO2 emissions of the e-vehicles include the emissions from production. According to Transport & Environment, they used IPCC data for this purpose. Here, the emissions from the entire supply chain are to be included, right up to the operation of the mines – i.e. far beyond pure cell production."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/04/20/te-finds-bev-environmental-footprint-significantly-lower-than-ices/   TESLA MODEL S PERFORMANCE NOW HITS 60 MPH IN JUST 2.3 SECONDS "Tesla says the Model S Performance hits 60 MPH in a time of just 2.3 seconds. That's just a slight improvement over the previously listed time of 2.4 seconds, but it brings with it new bragging rights for Tesla since the official figure now puts the Model S into a league of cars that numbers just a few." says InsideEVs: "If Tesla manages to find a way to bring the 0-60 MPH time down just another tenth of a second, the Model S Performance will stand alone as the only car in the world capable of hitting 60 MPH in 2.2 seconds and to think that some believe electric cars are slow. They're not."   https://insideevs.com/news/410853/tesla-model-s-0-60-upgrade/   TESLA CYBERTRUCK WILL HAVE 500-MILE RANGE AND “FLOAT FOR A WHILE” "Elon Musk has been leaking further details on the divisive Tesla Cybertruck, a sci-fi-inspired all-electric pick-up, via Twitter this week." reports leasing.com: "Musk confirmed the vehicle will have a heat pump, like the upcoming Model Y, an all-new air suspension and also claimed it will be able to temporarily float. That’s right, when he was asked about its wading depth, he said it will even “float for a while”. Quite what that means, I'm sure we’ll find out in due course."   https://leasing.com/car-leasing-news/tesla-cybertruck/   VOLVO CARS REOPENS SWEDISH FACTORIES & OFFICES "After all of its facilities have been cleaned extensively, Volvo Cars has announced that it has reopened its manufacturing plants and company offices in Torslanda, Sweden, following a coronavirus-related shutdown over the last few weeks." writes CleanTechnica: "“the layout in all meeting rooms, office spaces and restaurants has been adjusted where necessary to allow for social distancing,” the press release from Volvo reads. “For example, by ensuring that desks are placed appropriately and limiting the number of people allowed in meeting rooms and restaurants.”"   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/04/20/volvo-cars-reopens-swedish-factories-offices/   TESLA POWERWALL UPDATE MAKES IT SMARTER DURING A POWER OUTAGE "Tesla's Powerwall backup battery system for home use just got smarter. In an update released Friday, the Powerwall can now work with Tesla charging stations at home to prioritize energy needs during a power outage." says CNET: "Before the update, in the event of a blackout, the Powerwall kicked in to supply power to the home and continue to serve juice to a Tesla charger if the car was plugged in. Now, the Powerwall will communicate with the Tesla charger and the two will work together to share energy. If the Powerwall doesn't have enough energy stored to power the home's essential needs, such as air conditioning, it will automatically stop charging the car. Even if the home begins to show an uptick in energy needs, the Powerwall will slow the amount of juice headed to a Tesla before cutting it off entirely."   13.5 kWh in a Powerwall.   https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/tesla-powerwall-update-ev-charging-power-outage/   NEW VW TIGUAN INCOMING WITH R AND PHEV VERSIONS "VW is gearing up to reveal a heavily-updated Tiguan SUV in the second half of 2020, with this first teaser image showing the refreshed design." says CAR Magazine: "VW says the Tiguan is now it's best-selling car, not just for the brand but the entire VW Group. More than 900,000 were built in 2019 alone. A new PHEV will arrive alongside the Tiguan’s facelift as part of that rollout, utilising the MQB platform’s innate ability to house an electrified variant. The Tiguan plug-in will use a 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine and a 13kWh battery pack, with VW targeting between 31 and 43 miles of zero-emission electric range. While speaking at a digital presentation over VW’s PHEV plans, Dr. Kai Philipp – the brand’s project manager for electrified powertrains – told us that that target applied to all of VW’s upcoming new PHEVs: ‘surveys with Volkswagen customers have shown that a total electric range from 50 to 70 km (31-43 miles) fits the need of our customers.’"   VW will call the Golf PHEV an eHybrid and there's an Arteon too.   https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/first-official-pictures/volkswagen/tiguan/   CAN THE MINI COOPER SE ROAD TRIP? WE DRIVE IT 1,111 MILES TO FIND OUT "Some may say that taking the 2020 MINI Cooper SE, the shortest-range BEV available in the US today, on a New Jersey to North Carolina round trip isn't really the best idea. However, we decided to do it for a couple of reasons." writes Tom Moloughney for InsideEVs: "I was pleasantly surprised at the MINI Cooper SE's driving range at highway speeds. About 50 miles in I realized that I could probably space the stops at 90 to 100 miles apart without fear of running short of range, and that's with the heat on and me driving 70 mph to 80 mph in 35 to 40-degree temperatures when I started out. The vehicle quickly rises to the 50 kW charging limit and holds the full rate until the car is 75% charged before beginning to ramp down. When the car reaches 90% state of charge, it's still accepting 18-19 kW, and that's not bad at all."   50kW charge speed though. Tom also got to see inside en Electrify America charger, see the article!   https://insideevs.com/reviews/410446/video-mini-cooper-se-1111-mile-trip/   THE WEALTHIEST PEOPLE PREFER TO BUY ELECTRIC CARS "High-income households bought three out of four newly registered electric cars in Norway last year. Those who earn the most prefer electric cars over fossil fuel cars." reports Norway Today: "The more you earn, the more likely you are to choose an electric car rather than fossil-fueled cars. Households with the highest income last year bought 37 per cent of all newly registered electric cars and 21 per cent of all newly registered fossil-fueled cars."   https://norwaytoday.info/finance/the-wealthiest-people-prefer-to-buy-electric-cars/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   Do you prefer to buy new or used EV? 2020 Volkswagen Passat Review The Volkswagen Passat is refreshed for 2020.  So, it maintains the generational status it entered back in 2012. And while that has some of the automotive journalists finding some fault with the spruced up midsize sedan... I totally disagree. Because the 2020 Passat delivers exactly what it's supposed to, and then some.  It's a stylish and super-roomy sedan at a great value. Add-in Volkswagen's precise fit and finish.  Plus its reliable sure-footed-fun-to-drive-ness (yes, I made up that phrase) and you have an extremely affordable complete package. In fact, it's one that smart shoppers will have a hard time passing up.  I recently picked one up from my friends at Ontario Volkswagen and enjoyed a day of cruising Southern California's IE. -->Continue reading or click play below to listen.

2019 Volkswagen Arteon Review The 2019 Volkswagen Arteon has landed at Southern California VW dealerships.  And the Arteon's arrival is a big deal for a few reasons. For instance, the Arteon is VW's new flagship sedan.  Additionally, as often is the case with new vehicle rollouts, the Arteon encountered delays. As a result, that heightened anticipation for its arrival.  Most importantly, the 2019 VW Arteon brings with it a very new look.  And, um, wow! "It sort of slaps your mind ahead a few years while your brain catches up to what your eyes are telling you." It's classy but bold.  And yet, it's elegant but sporty.  To be sure, it's definitely cool.  In fact, a very cool looking all-new Volkswagen that still maintains it's VW heritage. And, with all that in mind, the 2019 VW Arteon is obviously in high demand.  But, even so, my good friends at Ontario Volkswagen put me in one for a day of pure driving pleasure. Continue reading for my complete report and see for yourself what a sexy-beast VW is now offering. 2019 VW Arteon - Volkswagen Goes Luxury and Wow! There's more than a double-take involved when you first set eyes on the 2019 VW Arteon.  That's because of the futuristic styling.  In fact, it sort of slaps your mind ahead a few years while your brain catches up to what your eyes are telling you. '19 VW Arteon driver front "...the grumpiest of all arm-chair-design-quarterbacks are very hard pressed to find a bad angle on the 2019 VW Arteon." 2019 Volkswagen Arteon driver profile To clarify, there's no question that you're looking at a Volkswagen... but there's also no question that this one is new.  And with many things new usually comes some criticism but that's hard to find with Arteon. Undoubtedly in the design department.  That is because even the grumpiest of all arm-chair-design-quarterbacks are very hard-pressed to find a bad angle on the 2019 VW Arteon. Volkswagen Arteon Trims & MSRPs The Arteon's bold new design looks fantastic no matter what trim level you decide on.   And Volkswagen is offering the 2019 Arteon in 5-different primary trim levels. Below you can see starting manufacturers suggested retail pricing for each configuration. 2019 VW Arteon Trim Levels: SE $35,845 SE with 4MOTION $37,645 SEL: with 4MOTION $41,795 R-Line with 4MOTION $43,560 Premium R-Line with 4Motion $46,210 But, two reasons not to be overly concerned about MSRP.  First, you need to get your Arteon equipped to your specifications. More importantly, go see my friends at Ontario Volkswagen in Ontario, California.  Because I trust them completely, they are transparent and no pressure. Arteon R-Line badge Specifically, contact my friend Randy Halcomb.  Tell him Tom and iDriveSoCal sent you and he'll take care of you like family. Though this is often stated in the automotive business it is entirely true with my friends at Ontario VW.  Randy's cell phone is 909-772-1728.  His email is RHalcomb [at] OntarioVW [dot] com.  Or email me and I'll personally introduce you.  :0) 2019 Volkswagen Arteon Engine & Transmission Volkswagen packs all trim levels of the Arteon standard with its powerful 2.0-liter TSI turbocharged inline 4-cylinder engine.  In fact, it puts out 268-horsepower with 258 pound-feet of torque. In addition to a powerful engine across all trim levels.  Also, VW bestows all Arteon trims with its 8-speed automatic transmission.  And that transmission includes the fun to drive (semi-manual) Tiptronic shifting option and Sport mode. 4MOTION exterior badge Another great feature Volkswagen gives the Arteon, in case you missed it in the above listing, is 4MOTION across all trim levels - except the SE. Adding to the Arteon's already sure-footedness, 4MOTION is Volkswagen's branded all-wheel-drive system. VW Arteon Fuel Economy Yet, even with all that horsepower, torque, and all-wheel drive,

A really big show on the cards this week. We’re headed to China for the Beijing Motor Show. Joel Helmes was the guest of our mates at Haval and he brings news of lots of weird and wonderful cars, and he has a few surprises in store. Simon Lai has been racing around in an often overlooked sports car - the Nissan 370Z, we'll bring you all the details. We've got details on a few new Volkswagen's too, including the all-new and very svelte Arteon. The cheapest ever VW Golf GTi, the Original, and we've discovered a new bench mark in the small car class, the all-new VW Polo - even in base model form it's a cracker. Rachel Franco returns with more madness - she's keen to share stories on cars that have been given a name. For example, she had a Barina with a gender crisis called Barry. You can imagine how this will pan out! Kevin Hepworth, from Kia Australia, joins us with details on a refreshed version of Australia’s best selling people mover, the Carnival. We'll take you for a drive in the very beautiful new BMW 630GT, and have lots of laughs along the way. Join us for another week of Behind the Wheel.
